I've come here more than enough times with my coworkers for lunch. They've always been able to accommodate small to bigger crowds like we've had at up to 12 people without much of a hassle. Just be sure to call them up to reserve tables for you and your party well in advance because they do get busy. I've had the tacos, fajitas, and of course the enchiladas. Always good, so why 4 stars instead of 5? I didn't rate Lupe Tortilla that high either but I felt the good was a bit better there. The service wins here though. I was totally disgusted with the "El Special Quail, SHRIMP and fajitas combo" tonight. The platter arrived and the first thing I did was.... grab a huge shrimp and started chewing, then spit. The ammonia smell and fumes were so bad I couldn't even breathe. I told the waiter and they made another platter without a discount....instead offered a free dessert? My teen and I came here tonight as a mom/son "date night". Wherever we go, he gets strawberry lemonade that is made by the bar. I don't mind paying extra for it as he has autism and is very particular about his drinks. Server just spouted off that they only have plain lemonade. The Chile Con Queso was decent, but lukewarm. We both agreed that the chips were so thick and hard to chew, that it ruined the app. Maybe just a personal preference for us, but we like light, airy, freshly fried chips. We both try enchiladas at numerous Mexican restaurants all over the city. I have no idea how these are reportedly supposed to be award-winning. Now, my son and I love cheese, but the first thing we said was "Wow, they're just smothered in so much CHEESE!!" I couldn't even finish mine. The refried beans were the only highlight, flavorful with the right level of a pinch of spiciness. The rice was meh and dry. I ordered a VANILLA tres leches to go. I was surprised to see it when I got home to be smothered in a whip cream with a lot of chocolate in it. The cake itself had the right consistency of milk, but something was just off about it in regards to taste. I was really hoping this place would work out for a recurrent Friday night dinner spot, but sadly, we won't be coming back. Oh, and they brought me the wrong meal and the server blamed it on the kitchen. I know that trick. I was a server for 5 years. I can't stand when a server doesn't write my order down and then forgets to put my order in correctly in the POS. Don't blame the kitchen. I met a friend for lunch and he suggested that we go here.It was both of our first time here and believe it or not I never had an enchilada! There menu is pretty large and also has a lunch menu. We both ordered the beef enchiladas with beans and rice and chili gravy and they did not disappoint! Our service was on point and she kept our water and ice tea glasses full. The enchiladas are pretty good here. They were out of the crab so I had 2 pork enchiladas, one with green sauce and one with the red "spicy" sauce, which I didn't find that spicy. Came with rice and beans. Only come here for enchiladas. Had a margarita, but it seemed puny for the price compared to other restaurants. Service is excellent. Very traditional style food. Nothing bad about the place, just nothing stood out. The salsa comes warm, which is something I have only seen in Houston. I'm not sure if it's the fault of the restaurant or the general area but the ENTIRE are gets filled with such a disgusting smell that people in the nearby apartments have to avoid going outside. Really not sure why this rating isn't higher. I found Sylvia's off a Houston's top 100 restaurant list. They weren't wrong. The enchiladas here are fantastic. The red sauce is perfection. There are such a wide variety of enchiladas as well. The queso and sides were great as well. Presentation was top notch too. Great ambiance for date night. Margs are a HEAVY pour. I was interested by their restaurant view. But once we order our food it went downhill. We asked some queso and chips and the queso was melted plastic rather then food. Once we got our food the steak was not cooked the way we requested and the guacamole did not have any seasoning or salt it was plain avocados. The steak was not seasoned well. Omg... almost $15 for some nasty enchiladas! You can get better for $10 at other restaurants. What the heck is this place thinking? I don't understand the appeal of thiis mini-chain of restaurants. Perhaps at one time they were the only game in town and they developed some loyalty. This is the newest restaurant in the family, simply "Sylvias" ... they still focus on enchiladas (their claim to fame) with an interesting take on Northern and Southern regional recipes. You say potato, I say potahto. I thought the service on a relatively busy night was very good. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the entire staff. Even waiters & busboys not responsible for our table were responsive if we needed something. There was none of the frustrating "let me find your server" nonsense when all you want is a glass of water. Food? I ordered a Laredo ... and frankly, it wasn't what I expected. This item called for meat or chicken filled tortillas with lettuce, tomato & cheese. For the price, I thought it would be fajita meat or chicken. At $12.50, I could have gotten 5 tacos of similar quality at Taco Bell. Of course, they wouldn't be served with rice & charro beans. Then again, my order came with refried beans and I had to remind the server I had ordered the charro beans. The error was quickly resolved. My fellow diner ordered cheese enchiladas ... but didn't even take a bite. Not because anything was wrong with them - but because he filled up on chips, salsa and queso. Speaking of which ... the queso is standard, the salsa, served warm, was very good. Bottom line? Sylvia, in my opinion, continues to produce a typical tex-mex product. So, really wasn't all that into it. Friends we're talking about this restaurant like it was the next best thing. My partner and I went to have lunch this afternoon he got the Mexico City and I got the Pubela. The sauce for both were okay, but the dry chicken inside was gross. It tasted like boiled chicken wrapped in a dry corn tortilla and sauce was thrown on. One other thing that wasn't appealing to me was our rude/ waitress. Lord, I love the Rojas picante however, the citrus astringency of a well composed green sauce is something spectacular. Kudos for the bento-esque presentation. Picture perfect. Sylvia delivers. Each component speaks individually but, joins in harmony. Parts = the whole. In the film, Amadeus, Antonio Salieri describes the integrated nature of a Mozart composition. I ordered the ceviche.. which i like but i prefer ceviche to be more juicy, ours was a bit dry (see pictures), i ended up squeezing about 6 lime wedges on it. We also got the coctel de camaron, which is basically just shrimp cocktail. this dish was delicious. I thought my heart was gonna clogged up. It's a layer of beans, meat, & glob of cheese on each individual chip. It was really heavy for an appetizer. As for entree I didn't order any of the speciality dishes. Wasn't quite hungry. I order the fidello soup. The large did not look like a large... Broth was ok but filled with vermicelli in my bowl.
