I was very surprised at sad the Mexican food was here. I remember the food when the location was on Westhimer Rd. was so much better than this location. The portion size has dropped from 3 down to 2 enchiladas. The price had gone up also for smaller portions. Someone needs to rethink the quality of the food when serving for an inflated price. I'm surprised at the bad reviews, came here for my first time and I'm impressed. The food was fresh and hot, had the carne asada and tamiquena, both perfectly cooked and the mesquite flavor was spot on. I don't normally like enchiladas, but the cheese enchilada was great thanks to the tortilla. The starter warm chips and salsa were flavorful, and I loved the refill process. Service was impeccable, and the manager was on his game. Best was the margarita, loved tasting the tequila, and not too sweet. I am not a fan of texmex, I prefer flavorful grilled true Mexican food with excellent service, and Sylvia's hit it dead on. I've searched to find good Mexican food in Houston, and finally found a good place. We will be back. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston! I always choose to go here on my birthday -- I love it that much. My family and I have been going for the last 15 years or so and it never disappoints. The margaritas are great and the food is delicious. I love this place! The food is terrific. I have worked my way around the menu. You can't go wrong with the Mexican stew, Rockport grilled shrimp or the amazing George West which is a moist grilled chicken breast. The enchiladas are pretty amazing as well. Saturday 02/04/17. Shopping day with my Lady, she mentioned a article she read about Sylvia s Restaurant on Eldredge. Article stated great food, fabulous atmosphere etc, I don't know who the writer was though they must have been high on meth. Compared to other restaurants and we dine out 70% of the time the food was at best minimal. Beef Quesidillas, cut up in pieces to resemble the size of your pinky finger with onelittle piece of meat on a flour tortilla sandwiched in between. My wife had the cheese enchilada plate, which she informed me was tasteless and bland. She commented that Taco Bell was superior to what she was served. The only positive that I can pull out of this dining fiasco, was the Queso. But at $5.50 for a small cup , which if I served my cat this size he would promptly let me know he was being short changed. Must be the real estate area for the prices, and quality of food. This is a restaurant city and there is to much competition to waste my time dining here. read more

My main problem was the food. Honestly everything we ordered was bland. That's very surprising coming from a mexican restaurant! Did not expect that. I ordered the beef tacos al carbon, no flavor. The general essence of salt was missing. Queso was bland, my husbands fajitas was bland. With a party of 5, we paid almost $90. Way too expensive, so it's not really worth it. My wife and I ate here for the first time just recently. The beef and chicken enchiladas were fantastic. But perhaps the best part of our dinner was the service. My only complaint would be that it was a little pricey considering the enchilada plates only come with two enchiladas. read more

Food is amazing but the service can be lacking. Dined in on a Wednesday evening and no one was at the front to seat anybody. We wondered in and seated ourselves. However, the waitress for my table was excellent (Thank you Andrea G. for your welcoming smile and taking care of us!). I always eat beef fajitas here because they are oh so delicious. Wanted to try something new with chicken so Andrea recommended the Mexico City enchiladas. Received the food. Took a bite. Closed my eyes. Mmmmmmm... Andrea comes back, "Is it amazing?" We have supported this business for many, many years and there often get my order wrong and I don't make a big deal of it. Today it happened again and upon calling them to say they got it wrong, I was shocked when Montey the hostess insisted it was not possible! I then spoke to manager Jimie, Himey? who said it could not have been their mistake. I was mocked as a liar on the phone so I drove 20 minutes back to actually show them my plate! They had to admit their mistake but there is complete lack of common courtesy in this place. Sylivia's does not care about their customer. The location on Eldridge Parkway is the best one I think. For some reason their meat tastes better. Least favorite is the one on Westheimer. Maybe because it's not as cozy. I like the Woodway location too. I go to the one on Woodway because it's the closest one to where I live. Always great service and always great food. Never had a bad experience. And I've gotten to go orders and I've always been very pleased with the amount of good and the way everything was packaged with care. I wish they had the hot butter to go along with my entree though, like Pappasitos does and El Tempo. That's the only improvement for me personally. And if it was that big of a deal I would go to the other two places more often but I don't. But I can wish for the butter! lol read more

Sylvia's was the closest Mexican spot for our hungry stomachs, which did the job filling us up, but left our palates a little disappointed. Starting off with their complimentary chips and salsa, I thought the thin, warm, salsa needed a little kick and some substance to it. We split the chicken chalupas, which was basically a pile of dry chicken and shredded iceberg lettuce. The beef fajita quesadillas weren't bad, but the guacamole had an off taste to it. Always go by the yelp ratings. I thought people underestimated this place since their enchiladas are supposedly the best in Houston. The food was bland. They charge $24 for a large margarita (the normal 20oz spooner glass) which is absurd as it is. High class, 5 star restaurants downtown dont even charge that much.. The other Sylvia's 5 min down the road charges $14 for the same one, & the service is exceptionally better at the other location. If you want to go to Sylvia's, go to the other one on Westheimer. Its literally 1.5 mile away. The service was terrible here anyway. read more

I have enjoyed Sylvia's sine she was in a tiny space off Westheimer west of Eldridge. WOW! What happened? Not nearly as good as it used to be. The Westheimer location used to at the top of my list. I need to go back there and give them one more chance. It's amazing that in a couple years, the quality has gone from top notch to barely average. Let me start off by saying that Sylvia's Enchiladas are freaking delicious. . We always get the Mexico City. They come with shredded Cheese and a tomato green sauce, Topped with sour cream. Simply delicious. Our second choice enchiladas are called McAllen and let me tell you.. those are amazing too. Those also come with shredded chicken and are topped off with a red gravy sauce and cheese. The Lemonade here is home made and so refreshing. Overall I am giving Sylvia's a 5/5!! read more

Went there on Saturday at 11:20 for lunch and were denied entry because their opening time is 11:30. With a pregnant wife and a toddler, we weren't even offered a seat until the kitchen opens and were told we had to wait outside under the sun. We found the staff attitude unacceptable. If they don't need our business we will gladly give it elsewhere. Not surprised all reviews for this place are mediocre. read more

Terrible brunch service!!!! I can't tell you how service is during the week but their Sunday brunch buffet service is totally inefficient. The food was not bad but your typical Mexican food. The advertised special said huevos rancheros (which there were none) and breakfast tacos (which there were none). There is one line for the whole buffet. If anyone in front of you wants an omlet made to order the whole line stops to wait. It took our party an average of 30 minutes to get through the line once. Our server was also the bartender so it took us 30 minutes just to pay our tab. I DO NOT recommend this place at all. We definitely will not return. read more

Had the Corpus Christi combo. Very disappointed. Guacamole was that shiny slick looking stuff that comes out of a bucket from one of the food suppliers, not fresh in house made. Tostada was good, very crisp. But Queso was more like out of a cheese-whiz jar and only covered about 2/3s of the Tostada. Enchilada was plain and barely warm. Just lack luster ground meat, no cheese, no onion and no green pepper. Just a rolled up tortilla with some ground meat inside. Mexican rice was fine. This is one of my favorite TexMex eats. Great enchiladas verde. I also go for the large grilled fish tacos. Not the best fish tacos I have ever had (not a specialty), but flavorful with the added sauce. Charro bean soup is also flavorful. Look forward to trying other items on the menu. read more

Sylvia's was a great little hole in the wall place 15 years ago. Really good food and good service. Not any longer! There are at least 4 Sylvias now, maybe more, and I am so sorry I decided to try the Eldridge location. I should have known...I went to the Westheimer store several years ago and hated it! I went BACK Friday and had Mexico City Enchiladas and goat cheese for the first time and it was AMAZING! I sat at the bar and the bartender is the reason I tried goat cheese. He was nice and attentive and 3 of the employees said bye to me when I left. No complaints. Great top shelf Margarita too! read more

Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen is a place where one can expect a great atmosphere with good customer service. The food was quick and hot. The menu is inspired by the Rio Grande Valley and sprinkled with some Mexico. However, the enchiladas felt uninspired and just merely "good" or "passable." Perhaps more spice to their food would complete the RGV meets Mexico meets Houston trifecta. All in all, the experience was great and it was quite a good decent eat. 3.6/5 read more

We had a terrible experience there with the manager. We had a party of 20 and wanted to sit on the patio since it was a nice day. The manager did not want to seat us because he said we were going to "kill his patio." That was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard. He even went so far to tell us to go somewhere else. Had we not all been there already we would have gladly left. We literally had to argue with him to seat us. We will never go back. Horrible management. read more

"20's something" manager made all kinds of false promises to compensate for the horrible services and WAIT that we had to endure. It takes 15 minutes to get drinks, AND you have to constantly remind the waiter because they can't pay attention! Cold food loaded with butter after we asked them for FRESH food with no butter. LOTS of attention deficit disorder going on here. No segregation from the annoying kids running around, good luck if you value romance these days. We love Sylvia's on Westheimer and was excited the new one is located closer to home. We went on a Saturday night, close to 6:30, and it was packed. The wait time given was 25 minutes, took really 15. The cup of soup was half the size from the other location with same price and it was not nearly as good. The beef fajita tasted like it was just microwaved and thrown on the sizzling platter because it had the smell and taste of just thawed meat plus that watery defrosted juice around it. The very soggy over-cooked green pepper tasted like it had been sitting on the pan all afternoon. Even the salsa wasn't warm. We'd rather drive further and eat at the other location.
