I don't usually post reviews but I just couldn't resist with this place. I got a very warm welcome from the host the second I walked in which made me feel special. The food is really out of this world! The traditional Mole enchiladas (The Puebla) are my favorite. Their fajitas are very tender and they use a mesquite grill which gives then a really great taste. I love Sylvia's kitchen, and the waitstaff is very accommodating. The food is still delicious and I like the atmosphere. My only complaint would be that the servings per cost at this location are a bit off. Sylvia's kitchen on Westheimer gave bigger portions, so the price felt reasonable. I would usually go there to get soup when I'm sick and get the bigger bowl for $10.70-something. This location gives you a much smaller portion and for the same cost. We're regulars here due to its quality and proximity to our house. The food is consistently good, but is most definitely priced upscale relative to most Tex-Mex restaurants. Food: Sylvia is famous for her enchiladas but the rest of the menu is well-presented. I remember being honestly shocked at how good the beef fajitas were - nearly on a par with El Tiempo's for quality, if not for presentation. Queso is homemade (the texture of which some might find off-putting) and very nice. Secret menu item: Request the habanero salsa, and mix into your regular (very mild) red salsa and/or queso to taste; it makes all the difference. Drinks: Some of the best house margaritas in town. Not too sweet, no floaters required to get a good flavor and a good kick. Service: They do seem to have high turnover of waitstaff, but we've never had bad service. They have always been very accommodating, and the GM makes a point to greet us on every visit. Prices: Not El Tiempo-steep, but steep nonetheless. Typical entree (with sides) is $13 and up; fajitas are $40 a pound and worth it (but just barely). Appetizer and bar prices are fair for the quality. Summary: This ain't Los Tios, and it's not a neighborhood joint. You'll get very good food and attentive service, and you'll pay for it. Oh how the mighty have fallen!! We ordered the beef cheese and chicken enchilada plate. Queso was thick and clumpy - out of a can. Ceviche had no flavor - we sent it back and ordered shrimp cocktail. I just came back from Sylvia's with that to go order of chicken and tomatoes with Moley sauce.I specifically asked the bartender if it came with three enchiladas. He said three. Understand this, it's pouring down rain tonight so I don't want to go back and criticize someone after I specifically asked him, but when you do ask for something like that and you don't get it, you feel cheated. I love this place! Have been here for dinner with work colleagues. Today I went with my family for lunch. It was fabulous! We had the queso flameado with chorizo. I've also had it with shrimp. Stopped here for lunch on our way west, had no idea what to expect. The restaurant was clean and nicely, though not lavishly, decorated - wood tables and seats, a minimum of colorful art (not a criticism!) - quite pleasing. Our server, whose name I admit I have forgotten (or maybe she didn't give it?), could not have been nicer or more attentive. My husband had the San Miguel combo (enchiladas suizas), which he liked because the sauce wasn't too vinegary as so many are. I had the Refugio combo (two 2-cheese enchiladas with chili gravy) and loved it. It was flavorful without being overpoweringly "Tex-Mex." Yes, I wouldn't have minded if it came with a small helping of salad, but that isn't uncommon with Mexican food lunch combos, in my experience. All in all, a good luncheon experience. Came here to grab a Togo order of tortilla soup for myself and enchiladas for a friend of mine .. The bartender seemed quite hurried considering there's only 3 people including myself at the bar. Didn't even finish getting my complete order before he rushed to the computer to tally it in. I watch all of my receipts .. He gave me the largest orders for both when if he would have actually listened he would have known I wanted small portions for both. He had an attitude when I asked him to change it, not that I care .. But his attitude was so severe I chose to write this review before I even received my food. Hence the 3 stars .. Sylvia's has come to our neighborhood. There are other options in the area, but we wanted to give them a try. I like the décor and layout of the restaurant. Staff was friendly, chips and dip were always refilled. The food did take a little longer. I got enchiladas and I thought they were great. My boyfriend agreed that the food was good, but the price was a little high for what we were getting. There's a more local spot on the street that we prefer. read more

Ok, so I was a bit hesitant to try this place out based on some of the reviews, but I'm glad I gave them a try. From the outside you can't really tell what is in store. Great authentic and colorful decor and light spanish music creates a nice dinning atmosphere. I was greeted quickly and sat immediately- I chose to eat in the bar area. The servers quickly acknowledge me and took my drink order and offer chips and salsa. Extensive selection of beers and authentic Mexican cocktails. For dinner I went w/ Cabrito Tacos (goat) , these were served w aside of charro beans. I was pleasantly surprised by homemade corn tortillas and pretty decent tasting tacos. Served w/ pico de jalapeño peppers/onions and cilantro. Overall a great experience. Oh almost forgot, I ordered a "Chelada", beer, lime juice and salt rim!!! I'll definitely be back.... read more

I just paid over 15 dollars for a few frozen shrimp. All the sauces come straight from a jar, and not even the good jar salsa. No spice, everything tastes like tomato. I was here for lunch with colleagues. The only thing I remember from the food is GREASE! We tried enchiladas (beef, chicken, spinach) and beef fajita. All of them were so greasy (aside from being piled up with cheese) that I couldn't really feel the taste of anything. The chicken was not bad, but spinach (which is always my favorite) was very bad. The fajita was cooked ok, but no special spice or good marination. Overall, I won't go back and would NOT recommend this place to anyone. read more

This past Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with old friends since I was visiting Houston. When we first arrived, we got a chance to meet Sylvia and felt very welcomed. I think my friend saw her on a television show and wanted to let her know. Anyway, we order a couple of Mango Margarita's and a bloody Mary. We order appetizers too. We've been going to Sylvia's for more than a decade. The food is as fantastic now as it was in the beginning. If you like cheese enchiladas, their Refugio is a step above. The Mexico City is their green chicken enchiladas, which is my favorite. They have an option to put ground beef in their Chili Relleno, which makes for a delicious meal. Oh well. This review is strictly related to their food but not their customer service and the look of the restaurant. Just went in on Memorial Day and ordered 3 items: 1. San Miguel, Fish Tacos and Flan. San Miguel was pretty tasty but there's nothing special with the entree as the sides were just rice and beans ... no lettuce/cheese/tomatos and pico di gallo like other Mexican places have to offer. For the Fish Tacos, heh ... I wish I didn't order it at all. Super fishy and bland. I truly thought it would taste sort of like the ones I got from Gringos!!!!! The flan was alright but for $5.50 for a small slice ... that's kind of pricey. $30 for everything was too overpriced. Talking about lunch not dinner here. I think it would make it right to get my money back for the Fish Tacos entree. Don't think I will return anymore unless the pricing and the quality of the food are evening out. Smh. read more

My girlfriend and I visited the restaurant for dinner. She ordered the tacos, I ordered the Donna enchiladas. My girlfriends tacos were good. The enchiladas were horrible!!! . THE WORST I HAVE EVER BEEN SERVED. They were very skimpy on the beef and too heavy on the sauce. They are way over priced. I was a regular customer until yesterday. My elderly mother wanted to take us out for lunch as a Christmas gift. She ordered the Rockport shrimp meal to go. The total bill was over $124.00. The waiter didn't fill our drinks when asked. However the food wasn't bad until the take out order arrived. The waiter brought it to us tightly wrapped and tied in a knot. We left the restaurant the car ride home was awful. The smell of was putruid trash and rotted fish smell. We arrived to my mother's apt and the smell engulfed the apt. I opened the bag with scissors and tasted one shrimp. It was AWFUL! It was rotten. The food smelled heavy of trash, foul ammonia smell. My mother call the manager on duty and was told to bring it back with the receipt and would refund the charge. My mother asked if the credit card was needed and the manager said no. I drove back and requested the refund but was denied! I was told to bring the card and I would get a refund. I disputed this nicely 3x and informed the manager on duty that we were informed to bring it in. I asked him to simply refund the charge and tax. He said I can only get a gift card to the restaurant for that amount and I informed him that I will not be coming back. 10 minutes past, then the manager appears and said " I'm sorry that you feel your order wasn't to your liking" and he gave me the cash for the $23.98. They served rotted food! I have a headache and was nauseated from 11pm on!. I will be filing a health report and with the media. I demand that my mother's bill be totally refunded!
