Just last week we decided to go to Sylvias on Eldridge; craving the fajitas and fish tacos. It was a Tuesday night. We were seated right away, only 2 other tables were occupied. Few in the bar. Slow night indeed. We ordered. It took 35 minutes to get our food! Simple fish tacos and fajitas. Furthermore, I had to send the tacos back because the tortillas were ice cold! Our waiter was very nice and apologetic. No one should have to wait that long for simple food- and the restaurant is almost EMPTY! The meat was not the same quality as in the past, like the original Sylvias. Poor kitchen management. Bring back the old taste of the original. We all miss it. And to the chef/kitchen- stop playing around and start being efficient. read more

Me and a small group of friends came to Sylvia's, the new location on Eldridge parkway. Upon arriving I requested to be seated near the bar area. The host excused himself to go confirm with the manager if that would be alright. I was told rudely by the manager, that wouldn't be possible because the section was closed, however I noticed that a couple who came in directly behind us were seated on the other side. Looking past that, we were told happy hour had ended at 7:00 pm and that drinks are full price. We proceeded to order our drinks and an appetizer to start with. The waiter pointed out that the owner Sylvia was there tonight after I asked how long this particular location had been open. We each ordered our entrees and the service was a bit slow for being a week night. As I was finishing up my meal I felt uneasy because the manager, who had introduced himself earlier as Mario kept looking in our direction, with a strange stare. I understand that the kitchen closes early during the week, but in this particular case it was a quarter past nine and we had just gotten our food. He ushered our waiter over and made a quick comment to him. I then asked our waiter when he came to check on our table what time the restaurant closed. We as a group felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome and ended up asking for to go boxes and for the bill. It seemed as though everyone was in a rush to leave and close up, while they still had customers dining, including the owner herself. Altogether I was so displeased with the service that I received that night. From the beginning when I was spoken to rude by the manager who dismissed my request to sit in bar area and then making our dining experience extremely uncomfortable forcing us to box up our food before we were finished eating and leaving. I most definitely won't be returning to Sylvia's and wouldn't recommend this place to any friends or family. I believe that the management and staff aren't at all hospitable and it was definitely not worth the amount I paid for my meal. read more

Disappointed, I've been a regular at Silvia's for years and thought I would give her new location a try... to my surprise the new spot is not a kid friendly establishment. Host staff not able to handle more than one table at the host stand at a time. Service was slow food prep time was even slower. Margarita glasses shrunk prices stayed the same. Floor Manager avoids customer interaction. Don't waste your time here. There are so many other spots on the west side of Houston to eat Mexican food. read more

I think Sylvia ought to just close this location before it will ruin her reputation any further. The quality & taste of the food serves at this location is NOWHERE NEAR what I had experience at the Westheimer location. I may be able to get tastier food from the frozen dinner isle at HEB than from ordering this place. We waited 30 minutes for our food on a Friday afternoon at 1:30 pm way after the lunch rush. I ordered the Mission entree. My plate was extremely hot but my cheese enchilada was cold inside. The cheese inside was hard as a rock. Obviously it had been microwaved!! The beef in my crispy taco was so greasy there was a pool of grease on my plate. Waiters really tried hard. The service was good we never ran out of drinks or chips. I know they tried hard to make up for the kitchen. We were starving otherwise we would have sent it back. Wish we had!! Not at all exciting. Guacomole which is usually included on platters was not. Refried beans are old hat and should be replaced by charro beans or something like that. Was part of a party of six, and no matter what they ordered, all the plates looked the same. Does not compare to Gringo's or Lopez'. read more

I eat at Sylvias on Woodway A LOT, at least once a week. Recently, the Woodway location suffered a fire. So, I decided to give this location a shot. We went on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered a "La Perfecta" margarita like I always do. I asked for the Gran Marnier that normally is mixed in the drink to be served in a shot glass as I always do at Woodway. And we ordered Beef fajitas for two. When the bill arrived, I was charged separately for the Gran Marnier ($7.00). I objected and made my case that the Gran Marnier was part of the La Perfecta. The staff did remove the charge but it was sneaky in my opinion to add that to my bill. Still, I let it go. On the table was a promotion offering "Half price fajitas on Wednesday". As chance would have it, the following Wednesday it worked out to go get the half price fajitas. So to Sylvia's I went. The portion was an insult. The special should read "HALF SIZED Fajitas". The portion was about half the size of our Sunday portion. I am a fitness athlete and I weigh the portions of all my home cooked meals so I have a good eye for meat volume. I guarantee that the portion was about 3oz. I asked for clarification on the order inquiring as to whether the staff thought we ordered fajitas for one. The manager came out. We asked for clarification. He left. Came back and said the portion was correct. I didn't argue. I know it was nowhere near the normal portion. First time at this location but have eaten at other Sylvia's around town. As usual, Svlvia's never lets me down. I grow up in the Valley and her TexMex is more of S.Tex style than Houston TexMex, hence may not be to everyone's liking. I remember in Jr. High and HS, Wednesday was enchilada day and the cafeteria was crowded and the food (they used to actually cook in schools back then) was outstanding. Syvlia's beef enchilada brings back the flavors and the memories of those times! I enjoy seeing her menu, with all of my S. Texas haunts as names of her dishes. I had the cheese tostada, beef enchilada and cripsy taco for lunch. The flavor of the meat was uniquely S.Texas and the quantity of food was perfect for lunch. My dining partner had the Crystal City - 2 spinach enchiladas and he enjoyed them as well. The chips are fresh and the red sauce is served warm. The red sauce is on the thin side and tomato'y, but tasty. Good meal and look forward to retuning.... read more

I was planning my mothers funeral and needed a place to have a reception afterwards. I called Sylvia's because it's close to the funeral home. They were very helpful with deciding the menu and were able to accommodate a rather large crowd. When we arrived, everything was set up and ready to go. They immediately started taking drink orders and passed out chips and salsa. We hade a buffet of beef and chicken fajitas with all the fixings including queso. Well the reason the bar is empty at 5:30 is because no happy hour!! Only reduced price house margarita. No food on happy hour. Disappointed. That is why we go to City Center because lots of happy hour menus. read more

Absolutely delicious! Great chips and salsa, too. A lot of Tex Mex restaurants in Texas seem to have pico de gallo or hot-but-not tasty salsa. Sylvia's has salsa that actually tastes good and has a little spice. read more

Food was above average but not amazing. Same for the service. The queso was very bland, should have opted for the flameado instead, I'm sure it would have been more flavorful. Crab enchiladas get +1 on creativity but lose a little in their execution. Turned out very ordinary. I was happy to see St Arnold Santos on the menu but very bummed when they said they no longer carry it. No other craft beer listed so I opted for Heineken (Boooo). Tres leches and sopapillas were pretty good. My favorite part of the meal. Probably won't go back due to so many other equal or better choices around town. read more

Wow, yelpers....I am kind of surprised to hear of such negative experiences. I have been to Sylvia's on Eldridge for lunch and for dinner on a couple of occasions. I LOVE the salsa....it is a lovely ranchero sauce to dip your chips in! I thought it was a lovely surprise, and a moment of nostalgia for a south Texas girl who grew up in a town where 50% of the population is Mexican. I used to order ranchero sauce with EVERYTHING back home, but I digress. The San Antonio is hands down my favorite dish/plate/enchilada to order, at all Sylvia's locations. This particular location is a hybrid of her enchilada kitchen in Westchase and her wood grill off Woodway. My husband and friends all enjoyed wood grilled options. The michelada is just as good as the ones I have had at La Mexica in Montrose, which is a TALL order. The house margaritas leave a bit to be desired...I recommend you step up your order to top shelf. My service has always been what I wanted it to be....scant when I was in deep conversation with a good friend during lunch, quick when out with friends who brought their 9 month old with them, just right when it was two couples out for the evening. I think if you are out with a group of adults and need quick service, you should probably say so. Always a Sylvia fan!!! read more

Sylvia's remains our favorite place to come. Their waiters and managers quickly become friends, and their food always reaches a higher pinnacle of quality. Their waiters always have an eye for what you need without hovering. We cannot recommend this lovely restaurant highly enough. read more

We have been coming to Sylvia's for almost 10 years. First at the Westheimer location, and now at the Eldridge. What we noticed is the drastic contrast in quality when Sylvia is on premise vs when she is not. I mentioned it would be worth calling ahead to see if she was there to insure a top quality Mexican food expirence. Anyways we were there the Saturday Jan 16th. The food was yuck yuck. We had the fajitas mixed beef and chicken. The chicken tasted as though is was precooked and frozen - very rubbery and not that hot. The cast iron skillet was not even hot. After our meal we even filled out a response card with our email etc etc just to inform Sylvia. I guess it was tossed since we did not even get a response. This was our 3rd Strike in a row for Sylvia's Enchilada. read more

I'm not one to ever write bad reviews; but this experience was just very unpleasant & disrespectful. They decided to charge my family "extra" for tortillas which when I brought it to the "managers" attention or whatever you'd like to call him because he did not possess any managerial skills or even know what he was talking about. He said (1Lb) of fajitas comes with (2) tortillas and we charge extra for extra tortillas. Well if you indeed do charge extra for tortillas it should be listed in your menu that tortillas are extra and it is not listed there he decided to dock one of the three charges off which he should have docked all three when it's not appropriate to charge for an addition of something that's not even listed on the menu just to get extra money from people's pockets. The owner of this restaurant should really rethink when picking his staff next time. Do NOT ever go to this horrible location, the manager was very rude and unprofessional. read more

Came out for a meal with a friend. Ordered the basic Queso dip and it was tasty but nothing extraordinary. Chips were thick and not warm. We both ordered the enchiladas San Marco, chicken enchildas with a vinegary golden sauce spiced with some red pepper. Presented nicely with iceberg lettuce, red onions and a bit of radish, mexican white cheese chunks covering it all. A large side of boring Mexican rice and the best cup of black beans I have had in a while. We finished off with flan, it was great. The house red sauce is very different, tasted and looked like Campbells Tomatoe Soup thinned with some rotel vegies and again more red pepper for spice. Not a bad meal, but definately pricey. The manager came over and I told him my concerns. The ambiance is lovely, great music that was set quiet enough to have a quiet conversation. Stopped by this establishment for lunch with my wife during a weekday. The restaurant itself is fairly attractive and appears clean. In my opinion the menu needs more "combination-type" plates that one normally would see at most mexican restaurant establishments. Our particular waiter seemed to be clueless regarding the menu (lack of knowledge). Since none of the combination plates had exactly what I wanted (I've have never understood why most places don't have a combo plate where you can pick 3-4 items that you want?) I went with one of the enchilada plates. I then requested the price of a side item of a crispy beef taco (price was not on menu). and the waiter comes back and tells me it is $5.99 (for just a simple crispy beef taco?) My whole enchilada plate was only about $10.00. Food was luke-warm, good-but nothing spectacular, and the enchilada is what they are supposed to be known for. They have a large very nice bar area with an extensive and what I think is a creative list of Margaritas, We ordered one, and I would have to say that it was expertly mixed and poured, very tastey - but at $11-12.00 each we were looking at spending at least $ 26-28.00 after tax and alcoholic beverage tax and tip. Most mexican restaurants in town would charge about $7.00-9.00 for a comparable drink. Just seems to me too much money to spend for an average tasting lunch. They badly need daily and lunch-time food and drink specials. read more
