Great food by one of Texas's foremost Tex-Mex chefs! Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen offers cooking classes that include hands-on learning, a margarita, and a full dinner (with a sopapillla for dessert). They also offer cooking classes. I spent this rainy Saturday learning to make tamales in the 3-hour class, ate a great meal (included in the price of the class), and got to bring half a dozen pork and chicken ones home. Sylvia, the "Enchilada Queen", hopes to debut her chili gravy, green enchilada sauce, and salsa at Texas grocery stores in the coming year, and I can't wait! All I have to say is that my wife and I moved from CA to Houston, TX and in my roundabout way of exploring my new surroundings, I stumbled upon Sylvias. It seem interesting at a glance from outside, but I was completely impressed with everything. First we were provided two lovely servings of hot (warm) salsa and chips. Let me say this... you can tell a lot about Mexican food based just off the salsa and chips--well this was the first key sign that the food was going to be good. Oh my God, I loved the he salsa and chips... I want to bottle that up and take it to go. It's that good. Plus when we were out of salsa, one of our servers came with a metal carafe looking container with fresh hot salsa. Impressed!!! Then for my meal: I ordered the South Enchiladas Tour and loved every bite. I was telling my wife that I had a special moment because the enchiladas reminded me of my grandmother's enchiladas. I certainly had a moment that embarrassed me with my grandmother's love. Thank you Sylvia for allowing me to enjoy and rekindle great memories. I just tried Sylvia's on Thursday and I'm so glad that I did. I normally don't eat salsa because I'm not a big fan of tomatoes. I really enjoyed the salsa here maybe because it didn't have huge chunks of tomatoes. Yes, it was thin in consistency and it didn't have alot of heat but I guess that's why I liked it so much. I'm a huge wimp with spicy food. I ordered the Enchiladas Suiza which were delicious! The chicken was white meat and not at all fatty. The cream sauce was divine and the lettuce on top made it very light and refreshing! I will definitely be back when I'm in this part of town. The cooking classes sound like so much fun! read more

We've only been twice and both times the food was delicious. I had the mole enchiladas, which, Angelo, our server, lit up when I ordered it saying that's the gold when it comes to mole. He was absolutely correct. It is really appreciated when Sylvia stopped by to welcome us and tell us they were holding a tamales making class. I ordered 2 dozen to go. Ceviche, crab tamales, chix tacos, queso flameado with chorizo were some of the highlights. Everyone came to sing happy birthday to one of the guests. A very nice Mexican restaurant that caters to families more than partiers (Yeah!). As you might guess, the main menu focus is on enchiladas, and they have plenty to choose from. The dishes we tried featured well-seasoned ground beef (Donna) and chicken (San Miguel) with just enough rice and beans to make a satisfying lunch. We weren't sure which of the two servers that came by our tables was really ours at first, but that was solved quickly. Given the taste and the turnaround time, we will be back! read more

This is a cute restaurant but let's be honest it was the food that bought me here, or I should say all the comments about the food. As people say that this is the place for the BEST enchiladas. Do, I ordered the "Alamo " plate which is 2 cheese enchiladas, 1 beef crispy corn taco with Mexican rice and I got black beans. So the black beans were a "No" to my taste as they tasted as they were not cooked all the way. The Mexican rice was oh, so tasty as it was full of delicious flavor. The crispy beef corn taco lacked In beef meat and flavor and I found the cheese enchiladas to be generic, as I did NOT taste anything special as they were filled nicely with cheese BUT, the sauce was so overwhelming that it left me scraping the sauce off so that I could taste the cheese. I have driven past this place for years and kept saying I need to go in. Recently I said that to a friend and we went in. Wow the food was excellent. I have been twice now and had two different dishes and both were excellent. Both visits were during the covid period and they were doing a great job with social distancing, etc. We ordered off the lunch menu, I will say bring a magnifying glass so you can see the print! First time I had the quesadilla and the second time I had the burrito. Excellent. The service was also excellent, we sat in the bar area both times. I know times have been difficult for the industry so I have been leaving 60-70% of the bill for a tip. However, it was deserved in this case. Yes I recommend and yes I will go again. read more

We had our neighbor's 40th birthday at Sylvia's. It's was a small gathering and an attempt to have her family have dinner together. We have reserved a room for the party and they were very accommodating. We asked to rearrange the tables since we didn't find them conducive, separating the families into smaller groups. When we arrived, the servers were attentive and asked what we wanted to drink. I ordered their Margaritas with don julio tequila, I must say it was pretty tasteful. I can't judge the food since it was a buffet of enchiladas -chicken with chile verse and beef with traditional sauce, and Chicken and beef fajitas. The chicken was a little dry. Of course, with Spanish rice, frijoles, and charro beans as side dishes. I give the service a 5 and the food a 3 since none of the dishes was exceptional. What is worth mentioning is that the margaritas and the habanero salsa we had with the chips were amazing. read more

I was visiting Houston and had been to Sylvia's in the past so I decided to get delivery to my hotel. BAD DECISION. Food came a mess. No salsa for the chips. The steak for the fajita was raw, the soup container was 80 percent empty. I called the restaurant at 620pm ...no answer the rest of the night. I called ChowNow who the restaurant website directed me to book through. No help. They said sorry, tried to call the restaurant and of course no one answers. My advice to business travelers do not get take out here. Go some where where the restaurant cares about its diners. read more

Last night, I just got checked into the hotel at 9 PM and knowing I am in a restaurant desert I knew they closed at 9:30 so I threw my bags in the room and rushed over at 9:05 only to find they decided to close early. Three hotels in walking distance that refer their guest to Sylvia's, if they change their hours, it is important they let the three hotels know. Came here for lunch with co workers. We all enjoyed our food! I got San Guisado (beef stew) lunch special and it was delicious. Tortilla almost had the texture of Indian naan bread which I LOVED! We had a private event for a milestone birthday and felt extremely disappointed with the service we received. Specifically, the speed at which food was being brought out was extremely slow - to the point that a majority of our guests didn't eat dinner and just skipped to desert. When I brought this situation to the managers attention he behaved as if this is normal and expected. Once the event was done he didn't even bother to apologize or acknowledge the problem. Other notable issues were poor table service (I had to ask the staff to clear appetizer plates so that guests had room to eat their dinner) and billing mistakes. Sylvia's need to understand that when people agree to cater/host an event with them it is based on trust that they will deliver. In our case we felt cheated. The money spent on the event may not matter.. but the poor memories due to their poor service do. read more

We were staying at a hotel near by and chose a different restaurant. The hotel van driver did not recommend our original choice but encouraged us to come to this place. It was worth it. I have never seen so many options for enchiladas in my entire life . My coworker had never had queso before! The van driver said they do a decent job with this dish so we got it. It was not the best I have ever had in Texas but it was delicious (and my friend was hooked). Back to the enchiladas - they had two columns, North and South. Sylvias has the best fajitas I've EVER had. My boyfriend loved the enchiladas with goat cheese. Great spot! We tend to spend a lot of money enjoying margaritas but you get what you pay for. I only wish they offered a beef fajita option without the tortillas, rice, beans,et since we are on keto and have our low carb tortillas etc. so we pay for stuff we toss out. I can honestly say that taste is not a real issue with the food itself...but the chips seemed stale and the salsa was kind of bland. Complimentary or not, no beuno folks! We came during the last hour of the business night, so the place was about 40% occupied. Seating was quick, and our orders were taken rather quickly as well. The "Donna" was ordered - ground beef enchiladas, a traditional Northern Mexico recipe, topped with their famous signature chili gravy. I ordered the "Guadalajara" - Chicken enchiladas, Southern Mexico recipe, topped with tomato based salsa casera, made and garnished with lettuce, tomato and queso fresco. Both sounded interesting and charro beans were added to both orders. The charro beans didn't have any particular taste that wowed me. You have to really bring the flavor if I am eating your beans because I have eaten so many growing up to whereas beans just doesn't do anything for me anymore. These beans tasted as though they were seasoned with despair. I looked at my entree and my frugal meter instantly disapproved of my food! The price to portion size is all out of whack! How dare they charge so much for such little food. I told the table that we were going to Taco Bell afterwards to make sure we were full for the night! All in all, my entrée did not lack taste, and the ingredients were fresh. I will give them that...but it was not nearly enough for the pricing. Just two, quite small enchiladas with some sprinkling of toppings were given. Bruh! All in all, the place has nice scenery and the wait staff is sort of decent. I had to ask for a refill on my drink, which I hate to do, but that's okay. They are worth trying once. I tried to call ahead and reserve a table for 8 but for some reason, they don't accept reservations. C'mon now, are you kidding me! it's 2014! Anyway we get there and we wait for an eternity and then we wait another lifetime because they wrote down the number in our party as 3 instead of 8! C'mon son... We finally get a table and are served cold chips with hot salsa..I'm disappointed in the chips, they shouldn't be cold at lunch time with this type of wait. We order drinks and I ordered the mexico city.....basically chicken enchiladas in a green sauce with a side of beans and rice. I was expecting taste bud explosions and ish from some place with enchilada in the name but they were just OK! Others ordered the fish tacos which apparently weren't that good. The table winner was the beef fajitas. You'd think they were marinated in Jesus' juice based on how 2 of my coworkers were acting about them. I forgot what my dish was called but I got carnitas enchiladas that came with a side of rice and beans. I wanted something spicy and the waiter explained that this was one of the two options that they had "spicy" since enchiladas aren't typically made that way. let me tell you- I drank my cup of water so fast it was that spicy but I loved it!! my kind of spice. everything was well balanced and the presentation was very nice. my family got entrees ranging from quesadillas for the kids, beef fajitas, and carne guidada. everyone very much liked their food and there was plenty of leftovers to take home. the waiters that helped our table were very accommadating and were very fast to meet everyone's needs. we also brought a cake and they stored it in the fridge until we were ready to do cake. when we were ready, they supplied us with the plates, forks, etc and I really appreciated it. I took my friend for his birthday today. First we were served cold thick unflavored tortilla chips with a watered down tomato sauce.. no flavor! The chips tasted like the worst from a store!! Then we paid almost $5 bucks for a mini scoop of non seasoned guacamole, I had to finish making it at table, thank goodness they had salt and pepper!!! The serving plates appear to be what the army eats on, WTH! Serve on regular round plates. For the area this place is located in, Energy corridor, it is the most unseasoned, bland, cold food, lack of authenticity enchilada restaurant I've been to in Houston!!! I would have driven to a Nifas or even Pappasitos would be better then this place. The prices of plates are around $15-$25. They should be asking $5-$8 dollars. My friend said I picked the worst enchilada restaurant in Houston. He's right, I did. People are paying for the ambiance and the location but the food is worthless, Sylvia should remember her roots and go authentic not Tex Mex! I had chicken enchiladas and my friend had chicken burrito. We both had chicken BONES in our meals. I was very upset. Had a piece of bone about 1 inch long that could have killed me if I had swallowed it. When I showed this to who I guess was a manager, he said it happens and there is a warning on the menu. I have never heard of a warning of chicken bones. I have been a customer of Sylvia's for years but can never go back now. I would not feel safe to eat there ever again. Especially after seeing other reviews on here of the same issue in the past months. I sure hope they can correct this issue before someone gets hurt. read more
