This spot was overall a solid 3.5 stars. I'm rounding up for a few reasons that I will help to illuminate. Disclaimer, I eat a lot of sushi. The one thing I didn't like about my last visit, a little bit of micromanagement coming out of the kitchen. In all fairness, a business owner should be critical of what's being plated and served. It's a reflection of the restaurant and the way they approach food. I do not want my food to be micromanaged, I want it to be finessed. This place is clean and traditional, but the bar is also set a little low on that traditional type of experience. This place is a comfortable eatery and not much more. The cultural takeaway is washed over by Ikea lables left on soy sauce bottles, a lack of attention to detail that easily transfers from the table settings to the delivery of food. It's a local spot but not a great date night spot. I was slightly disappointed with the overall presentation and quality. For instance, what a large plate of sashimi or nigiri is brought to the table, there is no explanation and the patron is left to wonder what some pieces might be. I've always nice when the server points out my favorite pieces and maybe something I didn't know about on my plate. The pieces of fish on the nigiri were massive. Let's remember that quantity over quality is not typically what you're looking for in a dining experience. read more

We ordered a bunch of items to share - agedashi tofu, seaweed salad, tempura appetizer, sushi combo, and some a la carte nigiri. We used to come here all the time and truly loved it but we hadn't been there in over a year and something really changed. First off, sitting on ikea folding chairs was a terrible change. So uncomfortable. Second, ikea bottles for shoyu just doesn't work. Now on to the food. My husband had the Banya bento - it used to be his favorite but this time the miso soup was watered down and the teriyaki chicken tasted like someone spilled the black pepper in it - way too much! I had the Japanese chirashi, the scallop tasted like it sat in water way too long - had no taste left. Lastly, the service was really substandard as we ordered hot tea and never got it! Neat little Japanese restaurant-slash-izakaya, tucked into a strip mall. Homey vibe, feels very family style, with regular western tables on one side and tatami-style booths on the other. I've heard it called a hole in the wall but the Banya bento box I ordered for dinner was legit -- for one, it was giant-size, and a lotta different items for the money. From what I hear it's pretty authentic too, coming with a small salad (iceberg) and miso soup which was very nice indeed, and not a salt bomb like most are. The sushi also was fresh, the tuna rolls tight and the chicken teriyaki tender; just excellent. The Tempura was average, but all in all it's a damn good value at a reasonable price. Our server was friendly and efficient, and all smiles too. Nothing fancy here, just a simple unpretentious little spot that's just lovely all around. Great food too. read more

Banya was on my "to try" list and was more or less in the area since I was in western Portland metro area. Sushi sounded good so I headed on over. The menu for different sushi rolls is fairly large so it took me a little bit of time to figure out what I wanted. I got ones that were favorites as it turned out and I was not disappointed at all. I got an Avocado Roll, a Spicy Tuna Roll and the California Crunch Roll. The sushi was fresh and memorable! I will definitely keep this place in mind for future reference. my family has eaten at sushi restaurants all around the Beaverton area, but we hadn't yet eaten at Banya, so we decided to give it a try! Banya is nestled in a quiet little strip mall, in between other popular spots such as Fireside and Sí Senior. upon entering, i noticed how bright and inviting the space felt. the waitress ushered us to a table, but left us before providing any explanation of the proper etiquette for the traditional Japanese table she placed us at. i knew enough to know we were supposed to remove our shoes, but i was unsure if there was any specific ritual around how to remove them, and i wasn't sure where to place them once removed. i gave it my best guess and figured she'd correct us if we did anything wrong. as for food, we all enjoyed the gyozas to start. the gyozas had a really nice fried texture, like a light, perfect crunch. i ordered the Banya bento box, my son ordered the Geisha bento box, and my partner ordered a plate of sashimi & nigiri. i would say my experience peaked with the gyozas. i found the food in my bento to be rather plain tasting. the teriyaki chicken seemed bland and a little chewy. my salmon and tuna nigiri pieces were good quality, but very plain. i'm okay with quality fish speaking mostly for itself, but they didn't liven it up with any other natural flavors (e.g. thin-sliced fresh citrus, some house-made wasabi, etc). the yellowtail nigiri had a chewy mouthfeel i did not enjoy at all... a departure from the soft, buttery mouthfeel of the salmon and tuna. i didn't care much for the spicy tuna roll because it had an odd aftertaste. the salad that came with the bento box was tasty. i was a fan of the housemade dressing. my partner also expressed that he didn't enjoy the spicy tuna roll that came with his meal. he thought it had an off-putting aftertaste. also similar to my experience, he enjoyed some of his sashimi and nigiri pieces, while finding others to be chewy and difficult to eat. unlike me, he is able to power through his plate, even if he isn't enthusiastic about the food. the waitress didn't check on us other than to bring our drinks & food, and it took awhile after we were finished eating for her to bring the check. we were eager to leave since the kids who were supposed to be seated with their parents at the table behind ours were being loud and running amuck beyond a reasonable amount. they were carrying on as if they were in a McDonald's play zone. overall, i would say the meal was so-so. we paid over $100 for a meal we weren't in love with, so we probably won't return. it wasn't comparable to some of the other great options in Beaverton, even though it costs as much or more than our favorites. read more

Finally, an authentic Bento Box! Don't let this little hole in the wall, restaurant fool you... It's actually really good! I've been living in Portland for 3 1/2 years now and had yet to find a true, authentic Bento box, other than what Portland calls their version of a Bento Box: steak or chicken on a bed of rice with teriyaki sauce. This one is the real deal. (See for yourself) Place is small, but tasty. Despite what I've heard about service being slow, the staff was very friendly and attentive. We started our meal with a refreshing glass of lychee sake, and a glass of pineapple sake. Both were served cold and refreshing. Great start My friend ordered the Dagon roll, and the Crunch Spicy Tuna roll, which both were excellent. Since my youth, I have loved Bento boxes . And since moving here, the traditional style has been really challenging to find, but this place fits the bill. The tempura was seasoned nicely and served hot, the chicken teriyaki was great, and as you can see, it began with a starter salad with miso dressing and a delicious miso soup, more than enough to eat. Reasonably priced, and even more so for lunch specials. You can't go wrong in this tiny little place with a big heart and big menu. read more

Banya is one of our favorite places! Yes, it's in a strip mall, but once inside, you wouldn't know it. The service is great, the fish is fresh, and the sake selection is impressive for such a small place. Both western and Japanese style seating is available. It's not the fanciest place in town, but it's homey and comfortable. We are gluten sensitive, so haven't had any of the tempura or rolls with tempura, but mostly stick to sushi, sashimi and rolls without tempura. Staff is flexible and accommodating to make substitutions and adjustments when possible. read more

Ordered on Doordash, not very good. Not sure what the fish in the bottom left is but I'm pretty sure sushi isn't supposed to be yellow. This tasted like I would get food poisoning from it (hopefully not). The fish was slimy, had a weird chew, and funky aftertaste. I took about one bite of each piece drenched in soy sauce and could not finish the rest. Spicy tuna roll is bright red and tasted artificial. Upsetting to have to leave a bad review but maybe this restaurant should not serve nigiri if it's going to be like this. At a price point of $25 for nine pieces of nigiri and a cut roll maybe that's my bad for thinking it would be palatable. I bet this place does good teriyaki and things like gyoza and tempura but these nigiris were extremely disappointing. read more

I often do take-out from Banya, the sushi is always fresh and their special rolls are also very delicious. We either order for two or for a family of 5 so we tend to over order. We typically do a sushi and sashimi combo + a smattering of other rolls. And I love not having to drive out too far from home (restaurant is right off of Hall Blvd). read more

Recently enjoyed a celebration dinner at Banya. While I would have asked to sit in the unique booths we opted for a table to accommodate an older relative. Our meal was delicious from the shrimp and veggie tempura and gyoza appetizers to the 4 different rolls we tried. My favorite was the Spicy Angel roll (though not very spicy at all). The Lion King wasn't like other restaurants but still very tasty and a good choice. We also ordered the Fire Alarm roll and a simple sweet potato roll. My only negative comment is there was too much rice and a tiny piece of sweet potato. I would prefer more sweet potato and very little rice. Last thing I tried was the chilled pineapple Saki. Cozy little spot off the highway by 99 Ranch. The interior was very adorable with booth seatings. Service was also friendly, tea and water were regularly filled. Our food was made super fresh and high quality ingredients were used. Thoroughly enjoyed everything that we ordered. Definitely not the most "authentic" Japanese food but certainly hit that comfort zone. The Veggie Tempura was covered in more of a panko batter rather than tempura batter but it came out hot and crispy so who can complain. Tasty miso soup, rice, and salad as sides. They've got a few fun maki rolls on the menu as well. We tried the White Tiger roll with spicy tuna, eel, and white tuna and the Awesome Scallop roll. Both were delicious and fresh. I really enjoy this place. I find the quality stellar..especially compared to cost. Which is moderate. I have been to higher end places that aren't as good and if you're looking for the best quality to dollar.. I think this is the place. The ambiance is very low key. The service is excellent. We had a range of sushi rolls and bento. Their gyoza was truly tasty and I really enjoyed their Geisha Bento. My husband and daughter got 3 of the spicy rolls and everyone left full and happy. My only negative is that they have barely functioning air conditioning. On a hot day, it just made it stifling. That being said, overall.. After having the food delivered several times over the past years, I took my daughter and partner to try it in person. The owners welcomed us and knew my favorite order as being the Naruto roll. The place is really hidden, but the food is very fresh and so good! We ordered several items, and they were all amazing! Banya is definitely the place to go for sushi and a nice welcoming atmosphere. The food is good it's one of the few places I have found in Oregon that does a Philly roll with salmon, not the gross smoked salmon other places do. Their prices are good. I am glad I found this place. The service takes a while, but overall it's a great place! I love the feel of the restaurant you don't feel like you are in Beaverton, Oregon. This place was our go to sushi place during Covid. Their sushi was very tasty and it was one of my favorite places in Beaverton. Since the opening of their restaurants, we've tried the sit-in option and both times they were disappointing. The food still was decent, however the wait time for the food was terrible. It takes forever for our food to come and both times they brought us the wrong item. The wait staff were very nice and apologized for the slow service. Just don't come here expecting your food right away or all of your food to be correct. We were a party of four, which isn't too large in my opinion. The ambiance was ok, we got to sit in one of those platforms, which created a different experience for us. read more

I have been coming to this location since before Banya was here. Since it's only about 2 or 3 blocks from where I live I walked there this particular night. I always look at the menu and normally order sashimi. This particular night I asked the sushi chef what he recommended. Hamachi (yellow tail tuna), saki (salmon) and red snapper was the response. He remembers me by sight even though it might be months between visits. Knowing that I like sashimi, he recommended a dish from the menu with the suggested selection and then we fine tuned it with the number of pieces of fish. As always, the fish was fresh, tasty and presented beautifully. I took these photos at the very last minute before I left. It was just an impulse. Since I didn't have one of the food itself, I found one from a previous visit. Like most sushi bars they have some cooked items on the menu. If you have never had sushi I highly recommend trying some. It's delicious. And this hidden jewel in Beaverton may only be slightly surpassed by one place in Portland, 2 or 3 I visited while living in Manhattan and one on Maui. You can not go wrong at Banya! read more

High quality sushi in a small, tucked-away shop. Beautiful and comfortable interior design, very clean and tended. Fine service, pleasant staff.... checks all the boxes for me! Absolutely great! Old school izakaya charm with Western style seating or tatami style floor seating. We stumbled onto the place at 430 pm and they were just getting started, I think. Hostess and sushi chef were friendly and seated us quickly. I glanced into the sashimi glass case and saw beautiful looking grades of hamachi, maguro and sake. We ordered three entrees: tekka don (maguro on rice), a bento with sushi, teriyaki chicken and tempura, and soft shell crab and vegetable tempura. We also ordered rolls of futomaki to be shared. Too, too many positives to list and the negatives were too insignificant to mention. Fantastic sashimi, crispy, light tempura, and fabulous futomaki. Long story short: Visit this place. I have been here several times and I feel like the quality has gone down a bit recently. I asked if they could make rolls with brown rice, the answer was no. Most places do this now, so that's not wonderful but okay. I ordered a spicy yellowtail roll and Portland roll, and asked for no sauce on the Portland Roll and a side of lemon slices. I get home and the spicy yellowtail roll is not like the description (or how they have prepared it in the past). It was just yellowtail which clearly had not been put in anything to make it spicy, just plain, with the sauce I asked NOT to be on my other roll poured across the top. It's not even in the description!!! I can't eat Mayo and this was gross. No lemon slices were provided as requested. The other roll was fine, not great. I may be finding a new go to place for sushi. read more

But I found parking lots behind restaurant area. I came around 7pm and most of tables were full. I ordered Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe to take to go~ Come with Miso soup. Atmosphere: small but it was welcoming. There were a couple of tatami and the rest were normal tables/chairs. Staff: only one server. She was still nice and friendly even though it was a busy lunch time! Food: I ordered the tonkatsu lunch box. The edamame was good. There was a slice of fruit (watermelon--kind of tasted a hint of onion for some reason...), Nicely fried tonkatsu, a hearty amount of salad (amazing dressing), miso soup (that's not overly salty, like other Japanese restaurants in the area!), Scoop of rice, one gyoza, and eight pieces of California roll. Did I finish it all? Nope! The portion was huge and the price was reasonable! Guess I'll finish the rest for dinner tonight! They did a great job and everything was fresh. I ate with my mom. Same thing except she got salmon. She got a nicely cooked, thick piece of salmon, unlike other Japanese restaurants. I didn't try their sashimi as I avoid it during the hot days but I'll be back soon to try it and other dishes as well! I'm glad I re-found this place again. We searched for a good sushi place in all of Salem but had already tried several establishments that served mediocre to gas station type sushi so decided to make the short drive to Tigard to try something new and hopefully, some much better sushi, for my first-born daughter's birthday dinner. Banya is located in a mini mall of other restaurants and has easy parking so we were off to a good start! We tried a wide variety of menu items and each one of them were delicious! The chicken katsu was crispy and perfectly prepared with tangy katsu sauce served with a side of white rice, miso soup and salad. It is the best chicken katsu we've had since moving to Oregon! All of the sushi we ordered was fantastic and beautifully presented; the Red Dragon maki sushi and Hawaiian roll were amazing! But the (ahi) Tuna with wasabi sauce - citrusy-wasabi whipped up with red and green tobiko was out of this world! When visiting Banya, you absolutely must try this dish! The wasabi is whipped with some kind of citrus and we couldn't stop eating it! I wish I had this wasabi sauce to dip all my food in. The Tempura Udon was perfectly and deliciously hot with slices of shiitake mushroom, kombu, kamaboko and served with a side of shrimp and broccoli tempura. Soooo good!! We were even impressed with their mochi ice cream. I was expecting packaged mochi ice cream but this tasted fresh and the green tea flavor was excellent, sweet and herbal, served with whipped cream. This is a small, yet very clean dining place that has both tatami rooms and regular tables. I'm on a special diet that requires little oils and minimal carbohydrates so rice was out and any sushi rolls as this place is known for their extensive selection. I asked if they could make sautéed vegetables and a salmon teriyaki with very little sauce. They accommodated me and put the sauce on the side--perfect! My husband ordered the gyoza, TNT roll and hot sake--he loved all of it! All in all, a good place to eat fresh food at a fair price. read more

Banya has been our go-to Sushi spot since we moved into the neighborhood about 4 years ago. We haven't had a single bad experience. Everyone there is super friendly, and the waitstaff are just the right amount of attentive. We absolutely loved eating at the booths before the pandemic, and look forward to going back to indoor dining after their renovations. They've offered takeout throughout the pandemic, and that's been amazing too. 99 Ranch is right across the street, which makes getting a bottle of quality Sake to bring home super easy. read more

Banya Sushi is our go to when we order out for sushi. There is a restaurant within walking distance to us but we would rather order from Banya as we haven't ever had a bad experience there and they are consistent with their service and quality. As a vegan, sushi is usually fairly limited, but that's okay by me. Edamame and Seaweed Salad are tops in my book ALL the time and I've now tried ALL the rolls except for the Umekappa as it just doesn't appeal to me. For the vegan rolls I feel like what you get for the price is a DEAL. The rolls are tightly rolled, which I am picky about because who wants their sushi roll falling apart before you can eat it? NOT me! I'm particularly fond of the Shitake Mushroom roll as it is very flavorful. I highly recommend Banya to anyone looking for good quality sushi for great prices. I can also say that we do have a family member who lives with us at least 6-9 months out of the year who is NOT vegan and has had many of the fish rolls and sashimi and always says it is great quality sushi. So vegan/vegetarian/omnivore alike can enjoy and find something good at Banya! read more
