IKEA bottles for shoyu don't allow adequate flow of shoyu
    Deb K.

We used to come here all the time and truly loved it but we hadn't been there in over a year and something really changed. First off, sitting on ikea folding chairs was a terrible change. So uncomfortable. Second, ikea bottles for shoyu just doesn't work. Now on to the food. My husband had the Banya bento - it used to be his favorite but this time the miso soup was watered down and the teriyaki chicken tasted like someone spilled the black pepper in it - way too much! I had the Japanese chirashi, the scallop tasted like it sat in water way too long - had no taste left. Lastly, the service was really substandard as we ordered hot tea and never got it! Overall, very disappointing for us. They need to change back to their prior standards!

Best neighborhood sushi. Very friendly service, fresh and tasty. Clean traditional Japanese setting. I will be back. Sake was also good

Neat little Japanese restaurant-slash-izakaya, tucked into a strip mall. Homey vibe, feels very family style, with regular western tables on one side and tatami-style booths on the other. I've heard it called a hole in the wall but the Banya bento box I ordered for dinner was legit -- for one, it was giant-size, and a lotta different items for the money. From what I hear it's pretty authentic too, coming with a small salad (iceberg) and miso soup which was very nice indeed, and not a salt bomb like most are. The sushi also was fresh, the tuna rolls tight and the chicken teriyaki tender; just excellent. The Tempura was average, but all in all it's a damn good value at a reasonable price. Our server was friendly and efficient, and all smiles too. Nothing fancy here, just a simple unpretentious little spot that's just lovely all around. Great food too.

Banya was on my "to try" list and was more or less in the area since I was in western Portland metro area. Sushi sounded good so I headed on over. The menu for different sushi rolls is fairly large so it took me a little bit of time to figure out what I wanted. I got ones that were favorites as it turned out and I was not disappointed at all. I got an Avocado Roll, a Spicy Tuna Roll and the California Crunch Roll. The sushi was fresh and memorable! I will definitely keep this place in mind for future reference. Prices are fairly reasonable also.

Finally, an authentic Bento Box! Don't let this little hole in the wall, restaurant fool you... It's actually really good! I've been living in Portland for 3 1/2 years now and had yet to find a true, authentic Bento box, other than what Portland calls their version of a Bento Box: steak or chicken on a bed of rice with teriyaki sauce. This one is the real deal. (See for yourself) Place is small, but tasty. Despite what I've heard about service being slow, the staff was very friendly and attentive. We started our meal with a refreshing glass of lychee sake, and a glass of pineapple sake. Both were served cold and refreshing. Great start My friend ordered the Dagon roll, and the Crunch Spicy Tuna roll, which both were excellent. Since my youth, I have loved Bento boxes . And since moving here, the traditional style has been really challenging to find, but this place fits the bill. The tempura was seasoned nicely and served hot, the chicken teriyaki was great, and as you can see, it began with a starter salad with miso dressing and a delicious miso soup, more than enough to eat. Reasonably priced, and even more so for lunch specials. You can't go wrong in this tiny little place with a big heart and big menu.

I often do take-out from Banya, the sushi is always fresh and their special rolls are also very delicious. We either order for two or for a family of 5 so we tend to over order. We typically do a sushi and sashimi combo + a smattering of other rolls. And I love not having to drive out too far from home (restaurant is right off of Hall Blvd).

Cozy little spot off the highway by 99 Ranch. The interior was very adorable with booth seatings. Service was also friendly, tea and water were regularly filled. Our food was made super fresh and high quality ingredients were used. Thoroughly enjoyed everything that we ordered. Definitely not the most "authentic" Japanese food but certainly hit that comfort zone. The Veggie Tempura was covered in more of a panko batter rather than tempura batter but it came out hot and crispy so who can complain. Tasty miso soup, rice, and salad as sides. They've got a few fun maki rolls on the menu as well. We tried the White Tiger roll with spicy tuna, eel, and white tuna and the Awesome Scallop roll. Both were delicious and fresh. Glad to finally make it to this place.

Recently enjoyed a celebration dinner at Banya. While I would have asked to sit in the unique booths we opted for a table to accommodate an older relative. Our meal was delicious from the shrimp and veggie tempura and gyoza appetizers to the 4 different rolls we tried. My favorite was the Spicy Angel roll (though not very spicy at all). The Lion King wasn't like other restaurants but still very tasty and a good choice. We also ordered the Fire Alarm roll and a simple sweet potato roll. My only negative comment is there was too much rice and a tiny piece of sweet potato. I would prefer more sweet potato and very little rice. Last thing I tried was the chilled pineapple Saki. Highly recommend. It was refreshing and tasty.

I think there's no more than 10 seats but if the weather's nice they have some outdoor seating, too. The wall had fun drawings and artwork on it which was fun to look at while waiting for the food. Staff: got our orders. Food: I got their Tori Paitan with char siu for $14. The price was reasonable with the portion they give. The char siu was fatty and the egg was runny. It was piping hot and the soup base was not bad. I didn't feel thirsty afterwards. The noodles were cooked nicely. It is a little further away for me just to eat ramen and nothing was outstanding to me. In fact, I felt a little rushed and couldn't catch up with my friends because of the way the store was set up and few spots. We didn't want to keep chatting because that means other customers would have to wait. So, if you want to quickly eat some ramen, come here.

They do have a large menu besides sushi so I've been branching out into their other items. This time I tried the miso ramen, and the broth was flavorful, not too salty, and it felt complete without needing to order extra add-ins. Better than some dedicated ramen shops I've been to. They might still get busy on weekends, but we went on a weeknight, it was pretty quiet and the food came out quickly.

Their menu is pretty large, with so many options to choose from if you're not really wanting sushi or just wanting to change it up a bit. We were sat down pretty promptly for a walk in at 6 pm! The space was nice to sit down with friends and loved ones for a bite to eat. We came starved, so we practically ordered the whole menu hahah. Nigiri: the salmon was superb. Very sweet, melt in your mouth, perfect mouthfeel! That was our first bite of the day and it really set the tone for the rest of what we ordered. We then had the kanpachi, madai, escolar, and ikura. I really enjoyed the madai and the escolar. Those were both buttery but had a great texture/chew. The kanpachi was fine, I wasn't expecting it to be slightly charred, but that's a personal preference! Next was the ika and the Hokkaido scallop. The Ika was delicious! Everywhere I go I always order the ika, and the Ika here was just as tasty and chewy. They added a shiso leaf with it, giving it more of a different flavor profile, slightly spiced/bitter. But I quite enjoyed that. The Hokkaido scallop was soo incredibly tasty. It was soft, bouncy, and sweet! No fishiness that can sometimes be found with scallops imo. Lastly for nigiri we got the spot shrimp. I thought this was just okay, similar to how I felt about the ikura. Not bad but there were better hits with the nigiri we ordered. Rolls: hamachico was my favorite roll we got out of the two. The yellowtail was so light tasting it almost felt like a palate cleanser with all the food we ordered, it was really good I'd order this again! The lobster roll was okay, I think the chunks of fried lobster on it was great, the base was like a slightly more elevated California roll as my partner described it. It was overall good. Negimaki: this was so so juicy with each bite and full of flavor! Would definitely order this one again. Lobster karaage: the breading to lobster was spot on. These were large fluffy chunks of lobster with just the perfect amount of crunchy breading. Paired with the spicy mayo and the tartar sauce- so delish! Miso soup: it was packed with clams, enoki mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, scallops, tofu, etc. the pot was PACKED. I didn't even get a photo, but I absolutely loved this. I'm not really a miso soup girl, but seeing how much others raved about it, we had to order it and I'm so glad we did. Best miso soup I've ever had! The star of the dinner was their ankimo, hands down. I've tried so many others, but this was so soft, creamy, perfect umami. I would've ordered seconds if we didn't have so much other food already. Overall dinner was delicious, and I definitely have my eye on so many other menu items to try next time!

A Memorable 21st Anniversary Celebration!…read more My husband and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary with our children at the Beaverton Benihana, and we had such an amazing experience! Victor "Big Dawg" was our chef, and he truly made our night! We found out Victor is from Monterey Park, California, just like us, which made the experience even more special. It honestly felt like we were back home in California. We were especially impressed with Victor because he is such a young man, yet carried himself with so much confidence and professionalism. His performance was entertaining, engaging, and so much fun for our entire family. He kept our children laughing while giving us a great show and preparing a delicious meal. We were genuinely impressed by his talent, personality, and professionalism! Kiana was our server, and she was absolutely wonderful. She was kind, incredibly helpful, and brought such a warm sense of family to our table. She made us feel comfortable and welcomed from the moment we sat down, and that personal touch made our anniversary celebration even more meaningful. It felt like we were being taken care of by family rather than simply being served at a restaurant. We also want to recognize the female manager who was on duty. She was incredibly welcoming and attentive and made sure our family had a wonderful experience. We wish we had gotten her name because she deserves recognition as well! If you visit the Beaverton Benihana, definitely ask for Victor "Big Dawg" as your chef and Kiana as your server! They are an amazing team and truly know how to make their guests feel special. Thank you for helping us celebrate 21 years of marriage with our children and giving our family such a memorable evening. Victor, you gave us a little piece of California here in Oregon, and Kiana, thank you for making us feel like family. The Killians! Five stars all around--we will definitely be back!

Unfortunately, this visit fell far short of those expectations. Our chef, Andy, was the highlight of the evening. He was energetic, personable, entertaining, and genuinely made the cooking experience enjoyable. He deserves recognition for the outstanding job he did. Unfortunately, our waitress, Arlyss, left us disappointed. After we declined the optional add-ons and upgrades, her demeanor noticeably changed, and we felt much less attended to for the remainder of the meal. At one point, she pushed my son's chair in while he was still sitting in it, which felt unnecessary and made us uncomfortable. The biggest disappointment was my son's birthday celebration. We requested his birthday ice cream, but after waiting more than 20 minutes, it never arrived. No birthday photo was offered, and there was no birthday song or acknowledgment. We also noticed another birthday guest seated next to us who wasn't celebrated either. It was disappointing to see what has always been one of Benihana's signature traditions seemingly overlooked for multiple families. We chose Benihana because birthdays have always felt special there, and that's the experience we were hoping to share with our son. Sadly, this visit didn't reflect the level of hospitality we've come to expect. Thank you again to Andy for making the meal itself memorable. His outstanding service, positive attitude, and engaging personality were the bright spot of our evening and the reason this experience wasn't a complete disappointment.
