The owner was as rude as rude can be! He seated us on the patio which had no outdoor heaters or any kind of barriers to help break the wind so the menus on the table blew away. He just walk away. The outdoor patio is totally ghetto. There was a gaping hole in the deck where they had a cinder block covering it over, which is a hazard in itself. Let me tell you, they are pretty proud of their cinder blocks. They are placed all around the front entrance holding boards as a sort of barricade? Ok, on to the menu.... My steak, which I ordered medium, arrived at our table rare and cold. I asked the waitress if she could please ask the cook to make it "medium"? It returned well done. Our coffee was strong, tasted old and burned and there was a long brown hair wound around the top of the mustard bottle that my father in law opened for his burger. Honest review. All of the food was bland. We paid 18 dollars for two crab cakes and a side of chowder. The crab cakes were tasted by 3 adults and we all agreed they didn't taste like or even smell like crab. The fish was so bland it was like they took the taste out of the fish somehow and fried it. The chowder wasn't too bad. 3 out of 5 stars once you add salt and pepper. Actual small chunks of clam. Flavor alright. The club sandwich, sirloin and steak fries were a solid 4 out of 5. I would give this place 0 stars if possible. While dining with a friend this evening we experienced a clear violation of my friend's ADA rights to have a service animal in the bar. Originally we left her service animal in the car, but as we ordered a dessert that might have posed an allergic reaction in my friend she asked our server if she could bring in her service dog. After getting the ok her well trained and very well behaved dog came and sat next to her. After giving her dog a small treat, our server immediately asked her to remove her dog from the premises. She stated she was not allowed to feed her dog. This is a very serious violation of her ADA rights. I work for a health care organization that deals with certifying service animals. This server should be retrained on the laws concerning service animals. I do not know her name but she was working Saturday, January 20th during the dinner hour. Young, dark haired, heavy set woman. My friend and I will be consulting with a lawyer to determine actions to ensure this doesn't happen again. read more

My best friend and I stopped here for our birthday dinner, during our annual birthday getaway to the coast. The service was super friendly coming in, we ordered drinks and an appetizer of "Cajun Barbecue Prawns" which were 12.95... no biggie, aside from the fact that there were 5 prawns, 3/5 I would consider relatively large enough to be called "tiger prawns"(obviously frozen), swimming in what can only be described as a thick barbecue sauce with chunks of peppers and onions. So we paid $13 for essentially 4 semi large shrimp. Sweet. I asked the waitress if there were only supposed to be 5, and she said "yup!" The bestie got sautéed mushrooms... large portion, really flavorful, if you love mushrooms and can handle a lot of flavor these were really good! She also got the steamed clam appetizer and really enjoyed those! I got the mushroom Swiss burger, that I almost missed on the menu because there was no "burger" section. It's at the bottom of the menu in the "hot sandwiches" section (which kinda makes sense?) I found it weird for a "steak and seafood house"... places like these usually have lots of burgers! It was okay, just a burger. Frozen but, whatever. Bottom line: A little overpriced for what it is, it's a divey bar looking place, which can be charming, but they go way over divey bar prices and their food doesn't live up to that... service was great, friendly and efficient, and the cheesecake for desert was great! All in all I was confused by my expectations should be. I ordered a New York steak with a salad, baked potato, and veggies as takeout. When I got the food, the steak looked like some pre-cooked steak that was baked, not cooked in a pan. When I ate it, it was incredibly dry and had no flavor. Also, the veggies and baked potato came smothered in cheese, which I'm allergic to. The online menu did not say that any of the items that came with the steak, would have cheese over them. First place I have seen that doesn't inform the customer that item(s) have cheese on them. So if you can't have cheese, make sure to say that immediately otherwise you'll find yourself having to call back and drive all the way back if you called an order in. My fiancé and I were supposed to get married today but had to cancel due to COVID. Since we had the day off anyways we came over to the coast from Eugene and have been staying outside of Florence. We stopped at one place in Yachats and it just didn't feel right so we continued on to Newport and found this spot! We started with calamari, it was fantastic, the garlic aioli was amazing too. I had the seafood fettuccini and there was so many pieces of crab, salmon and halibut. Perfectly seasoned, very creamy YUM! My fiancé had a 14oz ribeye with soup or salad and a rice pilaf for $12.99 (a Tuesday deal). It was cooked perfectly and had a nice char seasoning! Service was great, the host was super nice! The food came fast.. I just can't say enough about how good this place was. Honestly we are both so happy we wound up here, it was perfect! Pro tip: make a reservation. Great food, friendly service, fair prices. As a sports bar, the good: they air every NFL game on Sundays. The bad: the football games are all muted and they play a soft pop radio station as background noise, which pretty well negates the excitement of game day. Watching my game while Wham and Cher tunes played in the background wasn't nearly as fun as it would have been with some game sound. I'm so glad we ignored any negative reviews and chose Szabo's for our last dinner of our vacation. The oysters were insanely fresh. The clams were perfectly seasoned. The king crab was to die for. The hotel we're staying at recommended this place after I asked for a good place to get a good steak or prime rib. It was dirty, dusty, and sticky. While the service was great and our food came out quickly the steak was over cooked I ordered a med rare ribeye and got a well done thin piece of steak. We also ordered the Italian sausage pasta and the sausages are a weird gray color and the noodles mushy. The best thing we had was the appetizer which were oysters on the half shell (the only dish that didn't require cooking) Not related to service but overall morale, I was made to feel quite uncomfortable that they sat a couple directly next to us (table of 5 with 3 kids) and the couple was giving us very unpleasant looks any time our kids whined, fussed, or spoke loudly. Just plain bad food.. My wife and I came here for our anniversary. I had king crab and my wife had halibut. Chowder was very thick and mostly tastless. Halibut was coated with some bad tasting lemon breading and covered in a bad cream sauce. Veggies we're mostly celery!!! Twice baked potato was bland and undercooked. Crab legs are tough to screw up, but nothing to write home about. Those who say this is good either are affiliated with the restaurant, or have never had good seafood.. I consider myself a connoisseur of steaks that are great without pretense. I have had one or two steaks that I have considered amazing, and the one I had here tonight was almost unbelievable. It was juicy and immediately flavorful, cooked to perfection as ordered, and the char lines from the char-broiler gave an incredible addition to texture and flavor. Just the steak without the char lines would have been outstanding, but the char put the steak on it's own pedestal of perfection. If you like steak without fanciness, eat here. This used to be our favorite place to go. For 15 years we have been coming here and wanted to show our support during this difficult time. Yet, we understand that paper plates, but our salads were served in cut up "to go " containers . Other restaurants we have eaten at are still using real plates and sanitizing them, this just seems they have fallen so low. Drywall literally the only thing keeping people from being 3 foot from the next person and the food is what was the most effected. Not one of steaks were cooked right. Then when we tried to check out, the waitress put our ticket on another table so it t took over an hour just to check out. Our server apologized for the delay in getting our order due to a large group and that was not an issue. We have been visiting this place for the past 3 years while on vacation. We usually go for the Tuesday Steak special which is very good. The portions are different now due to the cost of things so we only got 1 side and the clam chowder bowl is smaller, but we come for the steak anyway and it has never failed to be anything but delicious. Was not impressed though with the fish and chips special, very small pieces of fish. The mud pie desert they have is awesome. We are in town for the week and after eating seafood everyday, I asked the hotel staff at the Whaler and Trip advisor for a good steak place. This was recommended. Knowing everything is a little upside down due to COVID my expectations were just good food. We ordered the prime rib dinners. I had to ask the waitress if it was steak or prime rib. I've never had prime rib served that looked like a steak that was grilled. It was horrible. Then the check came and it said Rib Eye not PR. I questioned she went back to the kitchen came out with a credit of $6 which was still more than we should have paid per the menu. At that point we just wanted to leave. When you walk in the door you are a little surprised because it is really like the local sports bar and have menu's like the long Red Robin menus. Decor is tacky lounge and sports BS all over. Once seated our waitress who actually looked like she hadn't seen a wink of sleep the night before was polite gave us the giant menus asked if we wanted something to drink, not let me get you water and I will be right back. We requested water and then water was on the table lickety split and she actually thought we knew what we wanted n 2.2 seconds. We ordered the Tuesday special, 16 ounce rib-eye steak, halibut salad and my daughter had calamari.
