While it's not fancy, it's good! The drinks are nice and strong, and the service is great. And the food is delicious!!!! This was our first time to Newport, and this was the first restaurant that we went to, and there was no disappointment. We were served drinks quickly, which was great, as this place was busy. I started with clam chowder, and I ordered the crab Alfredo, and my husband ordered the seafood pasta fettuccine. The clam chowder was great. Good amount of clams, and the broth was tasty. Both pastas had the same sauce, just different seafood, and it is scrumptious! The sauce is creamy with mushrooms and green onions. The portions are huge!!! The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the seafood was plentiful. The crab was juicy and sweet, and I still regret not taking the leftovers with us - that would have been a delicious late night meal. There are specials every night of the week, and the prices are decent even without the specials. There are TVs that are viewable from any seat for game watching. A few years ago I would have given a 4 star. (Didn't rate them then). Today, 3 stars. The sautéed halibut "pieces" was "fishy" and the salad consisted of slightly brown iceberg lettuce and little more. Now, every place can an off day but what made me go with the lower rating was the bathroom. Webs and spiders everywhere. Now , I don't mind bugs but this was pretty bad and makes me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. Enough said. But I definitely left disappointed from the last time I was here. Stopped in for chowder! No disappointment! We called to take out and asked how crowded they were. It was slow so we ate in. Due to vivid we have to be careful and she gave us a table in a private room! Had a beer and house wine both delicious. Shared a dinner fish and chips and chowder. Had dinner and breakfast here. It's off the tourist track, a place where locals eat and drink. Had a flatiron steak, chowder, and baked potato for dinner. This was hands down the best steak I've had at a restaurant. My dad is a butcher, and I know my steak. Done perfectly, potato was excellent and the service was also very good. My only down side was the other patrons. Smoking right outside the door, horrible language and inappropriate music playing loudly. We love their steak night (TUESDAY) particularly but pretty much everything is good from the fried shrimp to chicken wings and clam chowder.

Possibly the worst restaurant I've ever eaten at. I should have been concerned when our server brought our drinks and then examined them at the table. "Our pipes for beer don't get cleaned enough, and we often find bugs. I have to check" they warned us. Not kidding. But we were tired and stayed with our bug-free drinks. We ordered a steak, and prime rib. "I don't eat the prime rib here", our server told us. "Or the oysters". Twice warned, but what could go wrong with these simple cuts of meat? A lot, apparently. The prime rib was clearly a cheap cut of meat, wildly over-seasoned, and full of fat. Gross. It was certainly not Prime, Choice, or Select. But "Standard" would be my best guess. It was terible. We passed on the "home-made" desserts. With the exception of the mud pie, we found all of these desserts later in the local Safeway store, just down the street. Homemade? Not. Pieces of plain white paper are taped to the walls with hand written notes identifying the TV station feed (Cable, Satellite, etc), and added to the bad frat house feeling. No, we didn't ask to speak to the owner. We weren't looking for a free meal, or to confront anyone. The staff was well aware of the sanitary and food quality issues, so I'm sure the owner knows. They just choose to ignore them. How the health department hasn't shut this place down is a miracle. I foresee a suspicious fire for insurance purposes in their future. Nothing less will save this place. Avoid it like you would any place that made you as sick as we were afterwards. It's an absolute nightmare. read more

Don't let the outside scare you off. This is the diamond in the ruff. I had the rib eye steak. It was very good. Seasoned steak fries better than red Robin. Sunday special was 1lb shrimp plate. This was very good as well fried or scampi style. Chicken fried steak was mentioned to be the best ever had. Both burgers got two thumps up from kids. The servers were friendly and good service. They had plenty of TVs. Yes, kids menu and welcome. The best but no least was the huge mud pie. It was great. The prices for a group of 5 was very reasonable compared to other places in Newport. Me and the missus decided to give this place a try as we'd driven by it many times during trips to Newport and the reviews looked pretty good. Big mistake. We'd gotten the impression that it was like a local steakhouse but the interior was more road house but we thought, that's okay, we go to a lot of these little places and the food is good. When I ordered a beer and it came warm and flat, we should have run for the hills then. I ordered a chicken-fried steak, wife ordered the halibut. Steak was perfectly fine, wife's halibut was dry as a bone (and we can literally see the ocean, if you can't do seafood right, don't serve seafood, but that might definitely explain why a "steak and seafood" restaurant didn't have a single surf & turf item on the menu), and the "sauce", using that word loosely ... what is that? Sour cream? Cottage cheese? Not sure but it was off-putting. The longer we stayed, the more we noticed how quiet our fellow diners were, what there were of them, how the same four beer posters were on every wall, and how the place in general was just falling apart. That, and the fact we were in a sweltering back room got us out of there ASAP. We even got overcharged for dinner but did not care we wanted to get out of there. To be honest, this would have been a three-star review until my wife came back from the bathroom and reported "there was pee on the toilet and the sink is literally falling away from the wall and moldy." Mold anywhere in a restaurant earns a failing grade in my book. Earlier in the day we spent $50 up at Tidal Raves in Depoe Bay and had one of the best meals I can remember in recent memory. At Szabo's we spent the same $50 and had one of the worst. There are so many other good restaurants in and around Newport, do not waste your money at Szabo's. read more

This place was fine! My friend got the steak, I got the ribs and twice baked potato. The food was good. The ribs fell off the bone and the baked potato was good! I also got the cheddar bacon potato jalapeño soup and mozzarella sticks. Those weren't very good. Since it was our first time in Newport, we really wanted the visit to be special. We had some amazing meals, but this was our last before we headed home after an extended weekend stay. Unfortunately, it was mediocre at best. Our visit was Nov. 14th, but so many things about the night just kept eating at me, so I needed to leave my review. Yes...I'm well aware that things have changed a lot due to the pandemic. But after more than six months and another shut down just around the corner, I think is plenty of time to make changes that need to be made in any business to succeed. I'm not going to go with a dramatic retelling of how things were, I'm just going to point out three things...the food, the service and the lack of attention to health and safety. There were four of us and we asked to start off with Calamari, but we got our salads right away and had to remind the server of the appetizer. It was 'okay' bordering on flavorless. When the entrees finally arrived, the main courses were all good, but the baked potatoes were horribly under-baked and the vegetables were a pile of mush. The server was more concerned about her manicure and talking with the other staff members at the bar to see if we needed anything. And the bartender wore her mask like a chin diaper the entire time we were there....never once pulling it up over her nose and mouth. That leads into the safety aspect. We are in the middle of a pandemic and Oregon has a mask mandate. I heard a lot of complaining from people in town during the visit about how Governor Brown doesn't know what she's doing and she should mind her own business, but wear your freaking mask so the rest of us don't get sick and if you would do your part and wear your mask to help stop the spread...maybe we wouldn't be in a mandated situation. So.....in comes a family....no masks and standing RIGHT NEXT to our table and the server seats them at a table near us. What the heck happened to "No Shirts, No Shoes, No Masks, No Service". In short...bad service....just 'okay' food....no concern for public health and safety make me want to give it a negative star review. read more

I love this restaurant! I have here several times before and make it a point to stop here when I'm in Oregon. I drove by last night and knew I wouldn't get a table, so I'm here for breakfast. The pancakes are light and fluffy and the bacon is thick. Very good bacon. The restaurant itself is rustic with a large menu. They also have nightly specials. Mark, our server is fun and attentive. The service was the only good thing about this place. If I could give a lower score I would. We ordered The Captians platter. You got Maybe three fried clams 2 - 1 inch by 3 inch pieces of Halibut fried, 1 - 1 inch by 3 inch piece of salmon. 1 2.5 inch in diameter and barely a half an inch thick crab cake. In fact the whole plate smelled like it too. The second meal was chicken fried steak. With sausage gravy. No salad that was extra. There were 3 options for sides fries ,baked potato, ,and a twice baked potato. All of which were at an extra cost. We ordered the twice baked potato.It was a small russet potato .appx 3 inches long and was a half potato. The stuffing of the twice baked potato consisted of potato mashed up,a little sour cream and a light sprinkling of Colby jack cheese. No green onions no bacon bits just and crappy excuse of a potato.. The chicken fried steak tasted like the meat was rotten. It was about4 inches by 5 inches, and tasted fishy too. We decided to order some bread pudding to take back to the condo. The wait staff said to let her know about 15 minutes before were ready to go. So she could get our dessert ready for take out. She brought the check,and the to go dessert. She informed us there was the bread pudding a container with raisins and another container of whipped topping. The bill for this disgusting meal was $60.00 including the tip. The bread pudding consisted of larger chunks of bread in and eggy cream sauce. Not baked with the raisins it was runny and there was not simple frosting. It was disgusting and it was 8 bucks. Needless to say we took the leftover food back to the condo. That food was thrown straight away in the dumpster of the condos. To say we were displeased is an understatement. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY EATING AT THIS PLACE.. For many years I have been going to Szabos on Tuesdays for Rib-Eye. Of all the times, I have never been let down, and I go pretty often. Mark, the aging tattooed gen-X manager in shorts, has had to reduce the rib-eye size from 18 to 14oz, and a few months ago, he had to eliminate the soup/salad option, but he has managed to keep the price the same! $13 Rib Eye only every Tuesday. Reservations strongly suggested as Szabos packs out on Tuesdays. We always top off the Rib Eye with the $8 Mile High Mud Pie..enough for 3 or 4 humans. PS If you are offended by dinner plates that are purchased from Dollar Tree, you may wish to choose another place. I thought it was pretty funny. But I sure like the food and the wait staff is great! read more

Interesting sports and western themed steakhouse. Hard to beat the $15 Tuesday prime rib dinner, but on this outing one of our diners thought her steak was not up to par. Service was good, though we had to remind our server about a missing drink, but she was very attentive. The menu is steak, seafood, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, salad and desserts. My Philly cheesesteak was well seasoned and flavorful. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone so maybe not optimal BBQ, but the sauce was good. Chicken fried steak was very good particularly the gravy. The key lime pie was good and seeing the mile high mud pie go by our table was a sight to behold! The tables are a little cramped, but it does tend to get busy so try to make reservations. We have to go to Szabo's whenever we are in town. It's not Michael Jordan's and that's why we like it. The steak is always cooked spot on, if you like it rare you can get it actually rare. The fact there were multiple tables open but we were sat next to the bathroom with the scent of urinal cakes overpowering the food in front of us?? Was it the paper plates and plastic cutlery for a overcooked "medium-rare" Rib Eye Steak?? Maybe it was the bagged salad dumped into the tiny paper bowl masquerading as a "side salad"?? Perhaps I was bitter the paper plate had more flavor than the steak, baked potato and mixed veggies that I was charged for?? Was it the fact that the woman helping us had her mask hanging off her face? Actually all of these reasons are behind the 1 star and the worst meal I've ever had. Don't waste your money here. Oh Man, big mistake. The place looks okay from the outside, kind of rustic. Inside its a hole in the wall bar. I had prime rib and my wife had nut crusted halibut. First off, I have never been in a restaurant that served food on paper plates with plastic cutlery. Paper bowl for the salad and paper cup for my wife's water. Her halibut was hidden under a thick layer of undercooked breading. My prime rib was a little tough and marginally seasoned. Medium rare done right! Had a delicious rib-eye and rice pilaf, with salad and superb blue cheese dressing. Ordered for take out and ate in my RV as a treat, since a good steak is not a regular item for me these days. Could have had a sit-down inside, and a full bar is an extra hit. These folks are staying safe with Covid-19 precautions - everybody wearing a mask and distancing. That was a very tasty steak, and not disappointed since the medium-rare was perfect to my liking.
