My FIL wanted Chinese food, so we decided to give this place another go. We went on Saturday, around 7pm, and the restaurant was almost full. Our server was a younger man, who was very attentive and friendly. We ended up ordering the garlic eggplant (my favorite), fried tofu, and a chicken dish that came with bell peppers. The fried tofu was delicious (marinated tofu on a bed of steamed veggies)! -Don't imagine battered and deep fried (see photo). The chicken dish wasn't sweet (yay!) and had the perfect amount of pepper kick. My experience was WAY more positive then my last visit and the dishes our server recommended were delicious! This was my go-to restaurant when I was living in Renton as the food was good, prices were fair, and the location was more convenient than the bigger mall next door. Fast forward to 2023, 4-5 years later, I decided to order something for old times sake. I ordered the hot & sour soup, house special chow mein, and dan-dan noodles. The food hasn't changed much, still decent, still spicy, but I feel like something was missing... Definitely a hidden gem with a generous portion of each dish, I order the pork bung, the honey walnut shrimp, garlic fried beans, and garlic eggplant. It's got some nice tangy spice like you would get in a Szechuan dish. I sometimes go there when I don't have time to cook and it's pretty cheap for a group of 4 to have a family style dinner. You must order the sliced chicken with garlic sauce it might be the best Chinese dish I've ever had and believe me at 77 years I've eaten more Chinese than most people. I'm really disappointed, I tried to order a few hours ago for delivery. Everything says they're open rn but my order was set to be delivered at 1 am... tried calling and no answers. Well, I chose to go to this restaurant after I grew tired of Vietnamese food. The waitress (I didn't ask for her name) basically couldn't speak English very much, but the man (who looked like he was the owner or the manager of the place) could speak for her well enough for me to understand regarding my questions on the food items. I would recommend everything I got besides the honey walnut prawn. The honey walnut prawn was definitely a no bueno dish for us. First off, it was double or triple breaded, not dusted with cornstarch and egg whites traditionally.. there was skimpy dressing, and some of the shrimps were bad (mushy) inside. The walnuts also had an off putting smell.. which is sooooo disappointing since I've been on a hunt for a good honey walnut prawn south of Seattle for awhile now. The hot and sour soup is super nostalgic. It was a great price and tastes exactly how a typical hot and sour soup is. Nothing fancy. Just an awesome run of the mill hot and sour soup for a great deal. The cold szechuan noods were more peanut buttery than other places so if you're not into that, skip this. But I love pb! This was also a good deal for 5-6 dollars -- cold yummy super saucy noodles and the noodles were al dente so they held themselves together very well. General tsao's chicken was also very run of the mill -- but delicious. It wasn't overly greasy, nothing was overly greasy here! Cumin lamb was dry stir fried, not sitting in a pool of oil. We were all surprised but it seriously packed a lot of flavor! I used to feel sick eating szechuan out, and I thought it was just part of the game but this place is sooooo clean and fresh (besides the prawns), that we were all happy after this meal. Despite my reservations about this restaurant, my office staff used to get lunch here once to twice a month just to add variety to the company lunches. They told me today that prices have gone up by 20% since about a month ago, which wipes out any potential value to found. The food was already just acceptable for Chinese cuisine and often inconsistent. For example, ordering the same dish on a separate day may yield a completely different flavor. I'm actually relieved to see their prices go up by a lot. My staff are finally able to let go of ordering food from Szechuan First. I'm sorry but I have really enjoyed the flavors of this restaurant until I found a cockroach today in my ginger sauce. I've ordered on Uber eats the past three times and we enjoyed each meal. Sadly, after reading reviews and seeing cockroaches 3 years ago, I realize this pest issue is still here. I also saw a picture of their food card score which is "Okay". To have cockroaches in the food, there is an overload infestation of cockroaches everywhere. To not have this issue fixed will unfortunately cost their business. My family has been to this place for many years now for Szechuan food and the quality has been consistently good. It's like going to your favorite aunt's knowing that she'll always make that dish you like. Some of the staples that we always get here are: Dan Dan noodles, twice cooked pork, garlic pea vines, hot and sour potatoes, chilli crab, and any kind of fish dishes. You can ask for them to adjust the spiciness. If you don't just assume that the dish is going to be spicy. Service was very decent as it's a family run establishment. It was frustrating in the beginning because when I pointed out several dishes that I seen in the yelp reviews to the waitress she kept saying it was a different restaurant and instead recommended "similar dishes" LOL , but luckily another waiter helped us out. I was also annoyed that another table ordered before us when we arrived much earlier than them & I had my order ready. They also need to work on refilling our waters. I was chugging tea because our waters only got refilled one time, which was after we were done and ready to pack up our food. 5 stars for the food!! I had eaten lunch here a few years ago so when my husband suggested getting take out we ordered from here. We had Mongolian Beef, Cashew Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Pork Chow Mein and Pork Fried Rice. Three adults had large meals at least twice before we ate it all. The Mongolian Beef was given 5 stars by our son. My husband rated the Cashew Chicken as 4 star and I gave the Sesame Chicken 31/2 to 4 stars. The Fried rice and Chow Mein was liked by all but we prefer Chow Mein to have some vegetables and chicken stock base. The restaurant appeared to be clean and had a health rating of "Good". Beats going to the International District & dealing with crappy parking sometimes. The Szechuan wonton (dry style) lacks a bit of flavor to it but it serves as a good appetizer. Customer service here is usually a hit or miss sometimes. Like I said, I've been here for many years and have experienced lack of service when they're extremely busy so it does get frustrating sometimes to have flag down a waiter who is catering mostly to the bigger party. Not sure if they switched owners recently because it seems to be new staffing. Anyway, food here has always been decent. The chong qin chicken has a numbing spice with a hint of something sweet, like citrus. The crispy and spicy fish says it all by it's name. I've come here a few times and have been pleasantly surprised by the service. Don't get me wrong, it's a Chinese restaurant, so don't let your expectations run wild. I've been craving spicy food all week, and this restaurant really hit the spot for me. I'm so glad I was able to find an authentic Szechuan restaurant like this one. When we went in, we could only order to go, but the cashier was really nice and patient since we didn't call in for our order. The Chong qin chicken was a bit salty for me, but my husband thought it was fine. We liked that it was crunchy and they added the string beans in. The ma po tofu and Szechuan beef were both super yummy, and they weren't too spicy. My favorite would be the Szechuan beef because the beef was soft and tender. I'm not a big fan of hot and sour soup, but for those who are, I think they would enjoy the one offered here. We ordered the lunch specials for the ma po tofu and Szechuan beef, and the Chong qin chicken from the regular menu. I think next time, we will just order from the regular menu because the portions are even bigger, not that the lunch specials' portion weren't generous. LOVE SOME SZECHUAN! For those of you who've read my other reviews, you'll know my wife and I dig on Szechuan food based on our recent trip to China. The problem is most cuisine around here is Cantonese style, rather than Szechuan. I can't say if Szechuan First does good Cantonese style food, but I can say with certainty that their Szhechuan style food stacks up nicely for those of us south of Seatac! My wife and I had the bamboo shoots (freaking amazing), DanDan Noodles (better the next day when not up against such flavorful dishes), fish hot pot (omg so good, but could use more sichuan peppers), chong ding chicken (among the best I've had) and cumin short ribs (holy pigskin batman!).... as you can tell, we loved them all! They are definitely some of the more familiar szechuan style dishes and they are a great value! Not sure why this place gets two $$ signs when it's really generous portions guaranteed to feed and fill more than one person per entree... Anyhow, if you get the chance to check this place out, strongly recommend these dishes. Especially the cumin ribs... even though cumin smells a bit like body odor, the way they fry these ribs is better than any rib I've ever had in a chinese food place... so def give it a shot! read more
