I was right next door at the video golfing store and when it ended I had a hankering for some Chinese food so in I went, but I was not happy with the attitude I received when I went in here. Although the dining area was closed for Covid I intended to order take-out plus, it was made obvious by the table and plastic panels blocking the dining room. Anyway, pretty much every Chinese restaurant has Szechwan broccoli but not here. Without looking the menu I ordered Szechwan Broccoli spicy. I was told that I needed to look at the menu bc they don't offer that here. What? A Chinese restaurant with Szechwan in their name does not have Szechwan broccoli in their menu? Don't you offer a beef and broccoli entree or a chicken and broccoli or a mixed vegetable that has broccoli in it. Plus, any Chinese restaurant will make pretty much whatever you desire. So what they do have is Chinese broccoli, which doesn't have the florets just the stalks and leafy greens. Okay...but why the attitude? So the Chinese broccoli was pretty good, and they gave me the hot pepper sauce to mix in with it. I'm guessing so you could control your own spice level. The egg rolls were below average and the pot stickers were very good. I don't like the really doughy pot stickers. These were slim and trim. A lot of Chinese restaurants are closed on Mondays but not this one. I don't get it. Other reviews for this place are either extremely good or extremely bad. The reality is in between. The dining room is a bit too open, impersonal and getting worn. The food is mediocre and Americanized despite the Szechuan theme. And the prices are way too high. We come here only when we are desperate because there are no other good choices in the suburbs for decent Chinese food. On our last visit we ordered several Szechuan dishes, including chicken and string beans, and they were generally unbalanced (spicy but not that flavorful). Orange chicken was too sweet, chewy, and thick with breading. We also had the corn egg drop soup and wonton soup both of which tasted like they were made by McDonalds. They need to wake up and get their best chef from Chinatown out here to whip this place back into shape. I was a little worried about reading some of these reviews because there were quite a few people who hated this place. I'm not sure what they had, but my meal was fantastic! First, I think this is the sister restaurant to a "chain" found in Skokie and Chinatown. Their food was very similar and the menu was set up nearly the same. That's ok since l LOVE them all! We stated with chicken egg rolls, hot and sour soup, and potstickers. The soup was great, but the big winner was the egg rolls. The potstickers were ok. They were good, but a bit skinny. I'm more of a fluffy potsticker guy. Oh well, I've had worse. I went with the Mongolian Beef which was surprisingly good! They also didn't hold back on the meat as some places do. This place has some good Szechwan food. A delicate amount of Szechwan pepper tantalizing not overwhelming. So everyone can enjoy the flavors. They give a complimentary sugar-coated fried chips before your meal. Kind of like a crispy sugar coated donut. A simply sweet treat for coming here. The soup was plentiful. Got a lot more soup than I thought. I would say it serves 5 if not 6 people. The lamb skewers with cumin strongly taste of cumin. Something you should get only if you really enjoy pure cumin flavor. Other than that it was tender and not dry out. Seafood Spicy Pot was the main entree we tried. The waitress wasn't sure it if it would satisfy two people. I can say for certain it did. it has a good variety of seafood and veggie. Coconut Red Bean Smoothie was tasty. A strong sweet coconut milk flavor. One of the waitresses had trouble speaking English so ordering was slightly more complicated than it should be. Otherwise no real problem with the place. They offer a weekday buffet, steep, $10.35 with tax. Walking in I was trying to prepare myself for the MSG stomach ache I usually get after fast food Chinese buffet food. I was surprised with the taste and feel of the entrees and rice options. No ill MSG feelings, the food was light, not too flavorful but just right. P.S they have General Tso's Chicken aka Governor's chicken. Also, their sweet and sour sauce for the egg rolls differ from the sauce offered for the sweet and sour chicken. Both are a light peachy tone. Egg roll option were spring rolls, meatless and plain. Everything was just alright. Buffet is not worth $11 dollars plus. Stick with the menu and order a standard dish, do this and your experience will be better. I want to say the food was low fat and low sodium, which is why it sat well in my tummy. On my most recent lunch visit, the restaurant was practically empty. Only the five booths along the wall and two tables were occupied. Fried rice was missing something...flavor. First of all, I have to bring this out that I have NEVER been here before. I was visiting my parents at the retirement community and they strongly recommended me to check this place out. I was shocked by the fact that this restaurant has been opening for over 26 years. it's not a easy job to keep a business running for such long periods of time. my first impression after entering the door was the beautiful, detail-rich Chinese art. I think it's a dragon-boat made out of Jade which has been here since this place opened. being a vegetarian, the menu actually was pretty much my things. since it was my first time here, I asked for a recommendation and here is it-------String Bean In Szechuan Style. I swear to god this dish was what I had been dreaming for all my life. the flavor and cook were incredible perfect. I would definitely come back for this dish again!!! Very disappointed in Szechwan North. I placed a carryout order on December 26th, and understandably, the restaurant was very busy. However, they told me the wait for my order would only be 35 minutes. When I arrived at the restaurant, there were 10 other people waiting on orders, many who had ordered before me and were also promised a 35 minute wait time. After waiting for over an hour, they told me that it would only be 10 more minutes. However, I ended up waiting well over 1.5 hours for my food. As stated above, I understand that they were busy, but they weren't being honest with their wait times in order to secure more orders. To make matters worse, the food was cold and quite awful. I complained about both matters to the manager and was simply offered a 15% discount on a future order. Party of 3 went there on an early Saturday evening (5:30 pm) and restaurant had 5 tables filled. We ordered three eggrolls and was told we can't order only three we had to order four because they came in and an order of two per order - I've never had a restaurant refuse to serve three eggrolls. We order two entrées - Mongolian beef, and Szechuan chicken and pork fried rice - all were very flavorful. Also ordered a French fried shrimp appetizer just as an entrée and it look like it was from a fast food restaurant and came out about seven minutes after the rest of our food. Server never came back to see how the food tasted or if we needed anything else - a couple sat down next to us and they were waiting to be serviced and after 10 minutes without any recognition, they got up and walked out. Party is 4 Potstickers, very good Eggs rolls, good Mongolian beef, very good Honey chicken, very good Chicken pan fried noodle, good Something else I can't remember, good Soup Dumpling, not good, came after meal was over, explanation was that they come frozen and new cook messed it up. My sister and her boyfriend raved about this place to me a couple months ago but I hadn't had an opportunity to check it out until my cousin came from out of the town. We were trying to decide where to feast on this particular Christmas evening and suddenly I remembered Szechwan North. The lady on the phone was so kind and sweet, she told me that reservation is need for Christmas- it turned out they are the only restaurant in the area that opens on Christmas day! My cousin without too much protestation on his part we tacked our sails and headed for But once we saw the full parking lot we knew this was indeed the place. We parked carried with it all the mouth watering indications of what was in store for us. When we walked in, restaurant was completely packed! The front was full of people who did not make reservation ahead of time. Darn, I am so glad I called earlier!! While waiting to be seated, I feel bad for the guy who was answering the phone NON stop, actually the phone was ringing the entire time. The inside of the restaurant is not unlike Buca di Beppo with a series of separate dining areas creating intimate conversation spaces throughout. The traditional Chinese decor and soft light were warm and inviting. We were seated in the back round table by the kitchen, the aromas of the kitchen and introduced itself to my sense of smell made my eyes close. What was this intoxicating blend of aromatic spices and grilled meats and oh, I just couldn't help myself! I smiled and just like that, the infidelity began. After hearing some recommendations from our friendly waitress, we decided on appetizer (pot stickers, egg roll), a chicken dish (orange chicken), a beef dish (Mongolian beef) and dry chili string bean. The pot stickers were the first to arrive, golden brown and a pan-fried crispy on one side. The first bite made my tastebuds do an acrobatic happy dance. The flavors were PERFECT. The only thing that kept them from being a five-star rendition was the fact that they were very crisp, some of them a little too crisp, on one side, while al dente and on the other side. There was a definite texture imbalance. Soon after, we received our entrees. As a gesture of goodwill, I grabbed the Mongolian beef, VERY flavorful and beef is tender, my favorite dish! Next is the orange chicken, the orange zest was the first thing to knock my socks off--vibrant, fresh, clean, truly delicious. My one critical note for the chicken was that the cook was a bit chunky. Maybe a little smaller size would've provided the needed balance, so we won't fight for them. The string bean was it was mild and not overly salty, not very soft and still a bit crisp!!! LOVE it!! Water service- Good. Seeing the servers busy running around the restaurant, but I wish they would filled up our water more often. We were happy with our entrees and felt satisfied with our overall decision! We took home no leftovers, but I do think my enjoyment of the orange chicken lasted just slightly longer than the Mongolian beef. We were too full for dessert but when the waitress recited to us what the options were I felt the need to flagellate myself for the grievous sin of not saving room. Sometimes you have to open yourself up to new possibilities and I'm glad I did because the need for a good string bean dish or an excellent orange chicken can strike you at any time, anywhere. DON'T TRUST THE MAN ANSWERING THE PHONE WITH FOOD ALLERGY QUESTIONS WHEN ORDERING TAKEOUT. We ordered takeout last weekend and asked whether a particular dish contained a food we're allergic to. He said no. When we went in to pickup our food, we asked a waitress to kindly ask the chef the same thing. The man we spoke to over the phone overheard us doing this, and he came over and said, "You don't trust me? I told you it doesn't!" Turns out, the chef said it does contain the ingredient we're allergic to! The man answering the phone could've cost us a life!!! He needs to be less arrogant and mindful of what food allergies can do to people. All restaurant staff taking orders should know the ingredients in the food! FYI - most Chinese restaurants use EGG WHITES to marinate most proteins - beef, chicken, pork, fish, and shrimp. Best way to avoid egg in Chinese restaurants is to order steamed fish (there's no coating), roasted chicken, stir fry veggies, rice noodles (not egg noodles), and steamed rice (not fried rice). Be skeptical of dumplings or eggrolls because there could be egg in the wrapper or when sealing the dumpling/eggroll. read more

Have you even gone out for Chinese and you just can't stop eating? As close friends of mine know, that is a regular occurrence in my family (since we only go for good Chinese food :) As I mentioned in my previous post on Szechwan North, it is our family favorite suburban Chinese restaurant. I was back last weekend for a casual dinner with Dan and Erica, and it was one of our best meals there ever. It appeared that they modernized their menu look and even had new plates. We've always liked the food there, but this meal was great. We ordered pot stickers to start, followed by kung bao beef, cashew chicken (a dish we normally don't get) and string beans. It is correct to assume that we ordered a lot of food (another family tradition at Chinese restaurants), but since it was so good we were looking forward to leftovers. The only problem with that logic is that you have to actually stop eating in the restaurant to have leftovers. Luckily we did stop eventually, just with much fuller bellies than anticipated. There are few meals I enjoy more than great Chinese food, and this was one of the better ones. I'm thrilled with any subtle changes they've made. Unfortunately, there's hardly any competition for authentic Chinese food within 15 miles of here. They service is great and the overall quality of food is just as good. They have a large selection of authentic Chinese food and an even more authentic atmosphere. Be CAREFUL if you have a gluten sensitivity or allergy. With the closing of Golden Chef, options are limited for gluten-free Chinese food in the area. I was excited when I saw that Szechwan North had gluten free options. I ordered three gluten free entrees for carry out. When I picked up the order and brought it home, it was clear that the noodles were not gluten-free, so I called and they agreed with the mistake and credited back that item to my credit card. The sesame chicken looked suspect to me, so I asked about it, and they were insistent that it was made with all gluten-free ingredients. Therefore, I ate it along with white rice, and it was a big mistake. I have a gluten allergy, and got sick as a result of the meal. I went back the next day to speak with the manager and chef, who were insistent that my entree was made with 100% gluten-free ingredients, but I don't trust that was the case. Therefore, my recommendation is to simply avoid this place if you have a gluten sensitivity or allergy. If you don't have that allergy, the food is fine. read more

Wonton soup was watery and three small, obviously frozen wontons. There were enough chives. Last time I had shrimp in lobster sauce. Again not impressive.
