Hands down, Szechwan North is a must-visit for anyone craving real-deal Sichuan cuisine! The flavors are so authentic and spot-on--perfect level of mala, fresh ingredients, and generous portions. The place itself has a beautiful, clean, and inviting environment that makes dining here a pleasure. On top of that, the service was outstanding--warm, efficient, and genuinely caring. If you're in the Glenview/Mount Prospect area and want legit Chuan cai, this is the place. 10/10, can't wait to go back!"

It's been so many years since I've checked this place out again, but wow, I am much more pleased and impressed at the improvement. The prices are still high, but I think the quantity of food that they give you is a lot more reasonable. The taste profile is still very light, but if you order the vegetable or seafood type, then it is preferable that the flavor profile is lighter. The ingredients were fresh and not overcooked. If you prefer a stronger taste, you could add more salt or sauces at home yourself. Overall, I think they offer a decent Chinese food option around the area! The staff also speak Chinese so you know it's pretty authentic.

I have never given 1 star to a restaurant until today. My parents and I came here tonight to celebrate my dad's 86th birthday. We have been here many times, and even though the service is never the best, tonight our experience was awful. First, upon entering, I immediately noticed the fully decorated Christmas tree. Although it was pretty, I do not think Christmas decorations should already be on display on November 3rd (but maybe I am in the minority). This, however, is not what was so upsetting. We arrived at 5 pm and there were only 2 other tables of people. It took a while for the server to ask for our drink order, so we decided to order everything at the same time. The first entree (my dad's) came out from the kitchen in a decent amount of time. Mine came out next about 5 minutes later. Then we sat there waiting for my mom's dish. Since it was taking a long time, she told us to go ahead and eat. Guess what? My mom's dish did not come to the table until my dad I were both finished eating! This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! Did we let the server know that we were still waiting for the meal? Yes. Did we see other tables of people who had ordered after us get their meals before my mom? Yes. No apology was offered, nor was the price of the meal taken off the bill. To top off this experience, I showed the server an app for teachers on my phone that lists this restaurant as having a 10% off coupon. The server said she had to ask her manager and then returned to tell us they don't accept the coupon. I asked to speak to the manager. I showed her the app and the coupon and she said it wasn't theirs. In fact, it IS their coupon and I have used it multiple times before today. Needless to say, we will NEVER return to this restaurant. Also, I see that I had previously posted a review for this restaurant many years ago and should have known better.

It has been a long time since I was here! I was totally surprised by the quality and quantity of the entrees! We ordered: #213 Honey Garlic Pepper Beef Tenderloin #304 Pork in Garlic Sauce #506 Salt & Pepper Tofu #603 String Bean #743 Stir-Fried Squid I would not get the Tofu and the Squid again! All the others had great flavors and sauces! My favorite was the Pork in Garlic sauce! We were there on a Friday night and there were only about 3 other tables that had customers there! The wait staff were friendly and the bonus was when you check in on Yelp you get a coupon for 25% off your order!

Checked out another good Chinese place in Glenview. It didn't look like it would be much, another Chinese restaurant in a strip mall but it was better than the usual to be honest. Szechwan North has a menu of classics and is suitable for many tastes. Get it mild or hot or however one likes it. There's plenty if healthier options and the prices aren't bad for the big portions. A place looking like this from the outside may cause one to be skeptical, but it's what's on the inside that counts. In all honesty the inside isn't that impressive either. The impressive things include the food though. Big menu. There's a fairly okay amount of options for vegetarians. It's about $13 for an entree. Kind of high but these are big portions. Got us some of the tofu entrees. I got the Salt And Pepper Tofu. Certainly tasted like it had these seasonings in it. The tofu was very crispy, having a tater tots kind of texture. Got to say it's one of the better options around here for Chinese. It's open daily which is pretty rare for Chinese restaurants. The menu is full of spicy and even flaming hot options for both meat eaters and vegetarians.

    Lovely place setting.

Once again, Szechwan North didn't disappoint. We had a wonderful dinner with excellent service. We even had some entertainment- they must have hired someone new to deliver food to the tables. He kept trying to give the food the folks in the booth next to us ordered. We all had a good sense of humor about it, and ended up meeting some new people. It was a lot of fun.

My new favorite Chinese restaurant. Although, full transparency, I can't tolerate the Szechwan spice but they make some really nice dishes. I like the chow mein with pork, bok Choy with garlic and the kung pao chicken (I can tolerate the spicy here). The Szechwan chicken, Szechwan soup, and chicken fried rice was a favorite for others. The egg drop soup and the beef noodle soup was just ok for me. I like the Lao sze chuan's beef noodle soup better but it wasn't bad. I like tue other dishes better here. Overall, I really like the food here and the lady (speaks mandarin from Shanghai) is really nice! Love her.

Ordering was a breeze and the guys were always open to a conversation or giving suggestions. The restaurant was clean and the meal was always tasty. Just a note but the further away you move from any major city the fewer and harder it is to find great Asian food. The suburb is lucky to have them. The pandemic brought new staffing. Some were pleasant with customers though one lady, a supervisor had the wrong ideas of what customer service and proper etiquette is. Just the basics of my final visit. I took my family for lunch. We ordered lunch specials and a couple extra must-try plates. Two specials hit the table and the third was left waiting for her meal. Unbeknownst to us in the moment, her food was handed to a single patron there for his lunch. The place was filling up with a lunch rush but not so many that had complicated orders. Many were ordering similar lunch specials. Kung pao lunch special was popular. When her order finally arrived the supervisor realized she had given the wrong plate to the customer sitting some tables behind us. Mind you ten minutes had already passed. She quickly went over to him and asked what he had ordered. She then took the plate he was eating from and handed him the fresh plate. He was still holding a half eaten egg roll in his hand. Then she brought the quarter eaten plate and placed it in front of my mother. Before she could leave I stopped her and asked her what she was doing. She simply stated that was her lunch order. I told her she handed my mother someone else's food that they were eating and I watched the whole thing. Why didn't you take that to the back and make a completely new plate of food?! I paid the bill and got the F**k out. That's gross. Also, you gave the other patron new food but cannot do the same for our table?? This place is dead to me. If she could do that, it beckons the question of what else is happening behind the scenes.

To clear things up about their dining area, they have 2 small tables outside and 1 small and 2 big tables inside. Small tables - 2 chairs. Big tables - 4 chairs. On weekdays, you don't need to make a reservation. On the weekends due to their limited dine in area, I would recommend a reservation to be safe. You can make a reservation through Google/Yelp or phone call. Parking is easy since it's in a strip mall. There is also a 3% charge if you use plastic. Just a note, I tried looking at their food pictures on their website, but it kind of runs slow. Sometimes it would freeze. I think they need to fix it. I would return here to try other items. I would highly recommend ordering off their Malaysian menu instead of the miscellaneous. Don't order orange chicken or General Tao's chicken. Very cringe because you can get that literally anywhere. Get the Malaysian food because it's hard to find in Illinois. The owner is very sweet and the service is attentive. We ordered lor bak, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, hokkien mee, and kuih talam. Just a FYI, the portions are very generous. For 2 people, I would recommend ordering 2 dishes. Prices are reasonable for what you get. A pot of tea is $6. -lor bak 5 - I highly recommend this appetizer. It has crispy pork sausage with shrimp fritters, beancurd, and cucumber. It comes with two sauces. Everything was delicious. -nasi lemak 5 - I love the chicken rendang. The meat is very tender and it has a deep flavor. You can taste the spices that went into it. -Hainanese chicken rice 3.5 - I gave Penang Malaysian Cuisine a 4 because the rice was delicious. HD's version, the rice was not as moist and flavorful. The chicken was not bad, it's about the same as Penang's. It could be a bit more succulent without the sauces. -hokkien mee 4 - this won't be as tasty as in Malaysia. I liked the big pieces of shrimp, an adequate amount of sliced pork and hard boiled egg. The broth is still very good. If it's your first time having this, I still recommend it. -kuih talam 5 - I would suggest this if you like pandan. It's not sweet. It has a soft and bouncy texture.

What really impressed me was they had a specific section of the menu which was titled "Salt and Pepper". Of course I was super excited to try the salt and pepper tofu so here's what we got: - we got the salt and pepper tofu - we got the American garlic broccoli - got the mala lamb. - Got a pair of complimentary vegetarian spring rolls. When I went to pick up the take-out order, I was shocked at how heavy it was. This was clearly a lot of food. I'll start with the lamb. Very well thought out packaging, to be straight. Because the lamb had a lot of oil and liquid in it, they put it in a plastic container, which they knew is going to leak. They put that entire container in a separate tiny plastic bag and wrapped it so that the juices from that would not come all over in the main bag. Really appreciate that. Now the lamb, while cooked okay, the flavor was just, you know, it did not do it for me. Add to that they really kept the lamb as relatively big pieces. They were thinly sliced but they were just large pieces. They could have been smaller for it to be easier to eat. Flavor-wise there was just too much black pepper, which is what I was expecting, but to match that there was no flavor as such. The salt and pepper tofu was a disaster. I got it from other places. The flavor just was not doing it. It was not crispy at all. Yes I have them take out salt and pepper tofu from many other places. It does leave its crunchiness to some extent. This one had zero crunch. In fact it was weird. Every piece that was stuck to the next one had something gooey on it. Just overall the flavor was very underwhelming. The American garlic broccoli was overcooked to the extent it did not have the firmness one would expect and was overcooked to the extent where some of the smaller pieces just disintegrated. The spring roll is wild. The casing was phenomenal. It was perfect for a spring roll even after opening it after one hour. Really appreciate that. The filling, however, there really weren't many vegetables in it at all. That was very disappointing. Overall I don't think I am going to grab food from here again. The reason they get the 3.5 stars, though, is they did a phenomenal job on the packaging of all the food. The quantity was well beyond what I expected. The food, however, I have to say, was a disaster. And maybe this is my taste. It may be it's a bit too Americanized and I have not been used to eating very Americanized Chinese food for the last many years. That might be the problem.
