While sitting in the bar area, my date and ordered food and beverages. The food was good but the server was trying extra hard to be funny that he was actually coming across as arrogant and rude. Secondly, another server spilled ranch on the floor and it got all over me and my date. I'm talking ranch on pants, shirt, my hair, his face, etc. everywhere! They just handed us napkins. They didn't attempt to clean the floor around our table, didn't offer a free drink, nothing. It was quite the mess and then the arrogant server comes back and makes snarky unnecessary comments. T.J. Stone's restaurant and bar is ok. The food menu has a variety of chicken, fish and very limited beef, along with a bbq selection. I had the bbq combo of three pork ribs, pulled pork and brisket, which all were good, but didn't rate great. The ribs were small and tough on the outside and very tender on the inside. The pulled pork was well seasoned but a bit boring. The brisket was good but in the dry side versus moist and came out cool. I had the Old Dominion Double D IPA (9 ABV) for $7.00. I also had a glass of Merlot which was very good for a little over $11.00. My wife had the mini burgers and the fried chicken on a stick, both of which were very good. My son had the chicken fingers and fries which were good. The chicken fingers resembled the fried chicken on the stick, both were good. I recommend TJ Stone's but know it has a limited food menu. Great spot for a burger and a beer. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the food is great. Good sized dining area, but the bar area is also large for more casual eating. I have eaten here individually, had take-out, and been here as part of a group in the private room; all good experiences. I came into this hoping it'd be just shy of to a restaurant religious experience because it's 2 blocks from where I live but here's the skinny: ATMOSPHERE Came in for an NFL Sunday. Good atmosphere, a little crowded but I prefer that type of scene for football games. A big issue for me though is they don't play audio for the hometown Redskins game. FOOD I had the regular beef burger which was Ok, nothing spectacular but the Smoked Gouda Tater Tots we're F'n incredible. BEER Diverse tap selection, huge can/bottle selection *PROs* Great location for Old Town Northerners Probably the largest beer selection (can/bottle) in all of Old Town Staff, bartenders/servers are amazing, something you don't find much of these days Neighborly vibe/crowd, kind of like the show Cheers -CONs- Expensive, you can find better food for the price elsewhere (like Northside 10). T.J. Stones is one of those neighborhood pubs I like to visit when I'm not up for dealing with the crowds of Old Town or I'm just looking for a change. I am usually meeting a friend, and my friend is usually happy with their beer selection (they have a ton here). For the most part, their selection is excellent, but I have noticed that it is heavy on the Stout and IPA side; I'm a Pilsner kind of guy, so its a little less impressive for me. I have had several great lunches and happy hours here, but the most notable was a while back with my friend Lee, for we ordered a selection of T.J. Stones' appetizers and it was awesome. Yes, our own little smorgasbord of some of T.J. Stones' best munchies. We order their Mini-Mac Sliders, Chili Nachos, and Truffle Chips & Dip. It was all deliciously fantastic and we found ourselves embracing our inner glutton, but I must confess that I was a little disappointed in the truffle chips. I can't put a finger on it, only to say that the word truffle always seems to up my expectation meter to a level that says: "Oh, yes, little appetizer, you had best brought your 'A' game because there's no crying in my truffle delight." Still, this is a minor issue, and I would rate T.J. Stones at 4-4.5 stars all week long. Also, you have a bank within walking distance and a nice hair salon (Lori Younger) next door upstairs, making this a great neighborhood location. read more

T.J. Stone's is a good place for a drink and snack if you're staying at one of the hotels in the neighborhood. I'd actually give the beer list 5 stars - everything from cheap PBR draft to $25 Belgians. T.J.s also has a few sidewalk tables and several big screen TVs tuned to sports. If you are there to eat dinner, you might find the loud rock music a bit much. The dinner items looked a bit pricey. We stuck to the appetizers and salad menu, which looked like a better value. House salad is a good portion and comes with homemade dressing. I got the house special tater tots with melted smoked gouda cheese in the middle - these were crispy, indulgent and complemented nicely with horseradish ranch dipping sauce. Thumbs up! Servers were a bit sparse, but our server was very good and efficient. There is a side dining room which might be a bit quieter, but it wasn't open at the late hour we stopped by. From what I could see, I'd probably not go to T.J.'s for dinner but I would defintiely recommend it for drinks, sports and appetizers. read more

HORRIBLE experience! My family and I felt discriminated! Hostess seated the four of us (my wife and two daughters) without menus as they were short of menus at the moment. After sitting for nearly 10 minutes two white gentlemen were seated right beside us and provided with menus as soon as they sat down. I came with my friends for dinner weekday. When I entered the restaurant, I could tell this place is new. It is nice decor. This place has the similar concept with Columbia House. Once you entered it, there is a sport bar. There are so many TV on the wall and bar. If you go to the left side, there is a restaurant. The waiter was very nice guy and friendly. We had Buttermilk Fried Chicken Skewers and Loaded House Salad. Buttermilk fried chicken was good. It was not so greasy even though it was fried food. It had nice seasoning as well. We had shrimp and crab pasta as today's special and BBQ Combo. I was not so crazy about BBQ combo. Especially I didn't like Beef Brisket. It had red color meet although it was cook. TJ Stone's in Old Town North has a sports bar (Tap Room) on one side and a dining room (Grill Room) on the other. I like what they're going for in the setup but there is a wall, but no door, separating the two rooms--it would probably help the atmosphere to create more of a division and not make the Grill Room guests feel like an extension of the loud bar area. TJ Stone's does two things very well: chicken and beer--one of the most delicious combinations in the world. I order my wings naked so the skin stays crispy and the meat is juicy. The wings are a good size and there are plenty of sauces to choose from and ask to have em tossed if that's how you like it. Thursday is their wing night! So another new restaurant has opened in Old Town, which alone isn't news-worthy; the name and a quick glance from the street might make you think burgers and fries, and while I like where your head is at, that misses the mark. TJ Stones is a restaurant with a bar, not the other way around. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the food they serve is unexpectedly diverse, unique and delicious. I had the burger today, to try the predictable stock in trade, but had a salad as an appetizer and was surprised to find how good it was. And their appetizers - deviled egg with crab meat - wow! Gouda Tater Tots - unreal... They do parfaits and a brunch menu on the weekends that rival Royal Cafe, and their desserts... The blackberry cobbler was unreal. Service has been exceptional on every visit, and the bar - while packed on predictable nights - is easy to get to and easy enough to have a conversation. No yelling at each other like at Union St Pub. They may not have the exclusive address of King St next to the water, but they're every bit as good or better than those other restaurants. Im happy they're only a block away from me. And the prices... Everything else notwithstanding, you'll go back because all if this is also affordable. This is one of my new favorite places to go when there is a game on, or most recently, to watch the election results. There are plenty of tvs surrounding the bar area and it makes it easy to watch multiple games at once. It can get packed, so sometimes it's a challenge finding a seat or table. All of the food that I have tried here is delicious. They have these fried mac n cheese Gouda balls that are awesome. Most recently I was there on a taco night and the tacos I had were spot on. I'm literally getting hungry just thinking about them. My favorites were the avocado tacos and the brisket tacos. You can get 3 for $15 and they are a decent size. They also have a huge selection of beers and I always have a challenge deciding on which ones to try. The reason I gave this place 4 stars is because the service can be slow. Last time when we ordered 2 bottles of beer, it took somewhere between 7-10 minutes to get them. When our sever delivered the beers, she had a couple of other tables drinks as well, so we had to wait for her to come back and take our food order. That was another 10 minutes. T.J. Stone's is quickly becoming my go-to sports bar in Alexandria. Suffice to say, I've only experienced the tap room. It's a great place to catch the game on the weekend, as it's never too crowded, there are plenty of TVs, they offer high-top tables, and the service is solid. I'm happy with the beer selection here - they offer a good selection of craft beers including my favorite, Bell's Two Hearted. I would not refer to myself as a barbecue fan but, damn, the brisket sandwich here was splendid. So good so that it's become difficult to resist taking another sampling off the barbecue menu on my return visits. Nevertheless, I branched out and tried the salmon, which did not disappoint. As you can see from my review, I am a fan of T.J. Stone's. If there's a game on I want to see in a lively crowd (go Eagles!), I can't think of a better option in the area (save for Southside 815, which is usually too crowded). I for one am looking forward to becoming one of the "regulars" at this local sports bar. read more

If I could rate a zero, I would. They were terrible. My wife's retirement get together was planned by a third party and I was throughly disappointed. Poor ventilation in the room. We had only one waitress to serve 30 people. You had to beg for small plates to eat the wings on. The manager was not sympathetic as he blamed everything from the pandemic to staff shortages. Pretty outstanding establishment with great outdoor seating. Beautiful dining room & bar area. Apparently they have a happy hour at the bar, which I want to check out next time. Server was friendly enough even though my friend & I were catching up every time he came back to ask us what we wanted to eat. We shared the guda cheese tater tots, which were huge, 3-4 bites big. We didn't see any potatoes inside but it was full of cheese, yum! I definitely recommend. I had the tavern summer salad with strawberries on it. The champagne vinaigrette was really good. The lettuce was OK but had some dead ones which I had to pick through. So unfortunately the salad was not fresh. There's a lot more to try here, I'd give it another chance. The place has a nice bar side and what looked to be a more quaint restaurant side. We kept it simple and sat at the bar and ordered burgers and beers. Stopped by here for a business lunch, and was presently surprised! The service was top notch, and every recommendation by our server was a hit. We tried the smoked gouda tater tots (be warned, once you pop, you can't stop!), spinach artichoke dip (surprisingly not too heavy, and came with addictive truffle chips), the ribs (finger licking good), and I personally got the tuna steak which was a size-able portion, and in line with expectations of a tuna steak. Our glasses were always filled, and generally our experience was such a pleasant one, that I'd be back next time I'm in the area, even if I'm not craving something from TJ's particularly. This was the best example of overpriced food for underwhelming results I've experienced in the NCR. It's especially irkesome when restaurants add on charges to healthy side dishes regardless if the meal includes two sides, just not vegetables. Hello up-charge! The beef brisket I ordered was modestly consumable, however by no means was I enticed to finish it. One of sides I chose was asparagus and for $4 I was served 6, grilled, non-seasoned, let alone properly prepared, strangely green stalks. The charge for the asparagus was comped, which was appreciated, especially after the server was informed that the previous side dish was incorrect and not what I ordered. Overall let's just say, TJ Stones left a bad taste in my mouth and I do not plan to return. read more
