I'm Thai and grew up eating very spicy food, including authentic som tam from Thai restaurants, so I'm very familiar with how Thai spice levels normally feel. This is actually the first time I've had such a strong physical reaction. Most traditional Thai restaurants use fresh Thai chilies when making papaya salad, not large amounts of ground chili powder, because chili powder creates a much harsher, burning heat on the stomach rather than the normal fresh chili heat. I ordered spice level 4 expecting something moderate, but it felt closer to what would be level 9-10 at many Thai restaurants. There was no warning that the spice level was based on chili powder rather than fresh chilies. After eating, I experienced severe stomach burning, dizziness, and almost fainted, which has never happened to me from Thai food before. Information for the chef (from someone Thai, hoping this helps): Fresh chilies and chili powder create different types of heat. Chili powder is made from dried chilies, which concentrates capsaicin (the compound that causes burning). It also often contains more crushed seeds and inner membranes, which hold the highest capsaicin levels. Because it is finely ground, it spreads more evenly and can coat the mouth and stomach, causing a deeper and harsher burning sensation compared to the sharper but cleaner heat from fresh chilies typically used in traditional som tam. I would strongly recommend that the restaurant clarify how their spice levels work and what type of chili they use so customers can make informed choices. Thai food can be spicy, but it shouldn't come as a surprise in a way that causes physical distress. As someone from Thailand, this was not the typical type of spice we associate with authentic som tam. My mom also own Papaya Salad restaurant in Thailand. I know how to make my own dish. Do not sleep on this place! We visited here when attending an event at WVU Creative Arts Center (4 min drive). This place gives dive vibes from the outside. But inside it's welcoming, quaint, and inviting. The decor is adorable and the music was relaxing. The service here was excellent. They were very busy when we visited at dinner time, and the wait staff was super busy, but hustled and were pleasant all night long. The food is delicious, particularly the curry! Almond chicken curry was perfect. The portions are huge - we definitely could have shared. My 16 year old said "that's the best meal I've had in a long time!" This place is a hidden gem in a college town. We were supposed to go visit a spa/hot spring but a plan to take a deviation to visit a temple in Pittsburgh and car trouble changed our plans. This restaurant doesn't have the modern ambience but it does make you feel like you would be in a local restaurant with some south east Asian vibe. Everything we tried on the menu was tasty, flavorful and presented well. The spices were just about right!! The portions are comparatively larger compared to other Thai restaurants so order accordingly. I would definitely recommend this place. When I dropped in on a holiday eve, they seemed to be awkwardly undergoing a transition from being takeout-only to doing in-person dining. They had a lot of stuff stacked up in the back of the store and service was pretty slow as they were doing quite good takeout business. But I was happy I found them. With a vegetarian menu (not as easy to find with Thai food as one might hope given all the seafood ingredients it usually has), they offered plenty of variety for me, including some tempeh, which is a Indonesian fermented soy product that isn't that common. The garden rolls I added were as fresh-tasting as I could have hoped, with the mint leaves zinging and the peanut sauce (with what looked like fermented whole peanuts) offering contrast. My curry with tempeh had a nice variety of vegetables (though I could have done without the broccoli) and a warm flavor perfect for a cold night. The portion was large (though the noodle dishes other ordered looked really big). I found the freshness and flavor better than the other Thai restaurant I tried in this town, and maybe I'll find a way back. read more

The food is actually really good. But it is now TWICE when I had take out that I had a foreign, tough object in my food that I chewed on!! The first time was metallic 1inch long wire like part of a paper clip the second time was a small piece of porcelain. Stopped by West Virginia for a lunch break in the road trip. This little cafe is located close by West Virginia Tech. As we drove around the area, things are locate on the hill. This little café is full with Thai décor and space is not as spacious. Their menu have a wide range of selection. One thing that I like is the chicken satay. The chicken is very juicy, and along with the pickled cucumber sauce, yum yum yum. As we eating, we saw there are quite a few people come in and order take out.
