I went here with my wife a few weeks ago. Ordered the haleem. The haleem was lukewarm. I went up to the counter and told the guy who appeared to be the owner that my haleem was lukewarm. He doesn't say a word just takes it from me without any sort of apology pops it in the microwave and gives it back. I really don't like the system they have at this place. Coming from northern Virginia where there are some of the best Pakistani restaurants such as Kabob Palace and Ravi Kabob, this place is a big downgrade. Not sure how it has four stars. You can't order a la carte and are relegated to ordering whatever they have sitting out. I have noticed that whatever is out there appears to have been left sitting for a long time. If you're going to do it cafeteria style at least make sure the dishes are refreshed consistently and are hot and fresh. They will simply plop it in the microwave and hand it to you. I don't know about you but that isn't remotely appealing. Go someplace where they make it to order. Lastly when I went up to pay I was left standing for at least a good five minutes and noticed other customers waiting just as helpless. Poor service, stale food, and a terrible set up all combine for a very, very disappointing experience. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place like I will going forward. read more

Worst food we had ever at any Pakistani place. The naans were too crispy and cold. Both the mutton and chicken curries were much worse than what we usually cook at home! I picked the place only because it's quite close to Downtown Hyatt Regency, and had great reviews. I wonder if the regular diners here had good quality Pakistani food ever elsewhere! read more

We found this place on Google map which has a lot of excellent reviews. We drove by and it's much more crowded than other restaurants near by. Walked in without knowing much about Pakistani food and we were the only non middle eastern group in the restaurant. But the staffs were so friendly. They explained all the dishes in details so we could make our choices in a breeze. They even made a special chicken dish for my 7 yr old who doesn't like spicy food. That chicken dish (see photo) was outstanding. We also ordered the tilapia and a chicken rice dish that they're both very good. We'll be back! Just wish their restroom is a bit cleaner. read more

Used to love this place and my husband was obsessed with the food and spices. We've been there once and we started getting delivery when they started delivering through grub-hub. Dinner tonight was very disappointing. No spices no salt and all 3 dishes ( chicken curry, chicken frontier and korma) tasted the same. This place is a hidden gem. I eat here at least once a week and it's always consistently excellent. Saturday evenings have the best selection- biryani is always fresh and delicious and I crave the garlicky lentils (although some nights it is a little oily). Meats are stewed to perfection. Naan is baked fresh and served hot. The guys behind the counter are always helpful and friendly. This place is definitely no frills but if you can overlook it, you are in for a treat! read more

I am surprised by the bad reviews here. I have eaten here twice and my husband has eaten here once. The service isn't the greatest. They don't always move particularly fast, but we have enjoyed the food. Both times I ordered one of the daily specials. The daily specials are prepared in advance and sitting in warmers. They served it up and threw it in the microwave to heat it up more prior to giving it to me. Maybe that was in response to people saying the food was cold? The nan that came with it was yummy and seemed fresh. I thought it was good food with large servings for a reasonable price. I live in the area and will go back. And, if there is a prayer room in the basement, who cares? 1/8/09- Have continued to eat there (I think we are up to 5 times now). We still really like it. The service is slow, but we just think of it as quirky. It is worth it for the food. It took us a bit to understand that they have the five daily specials in warmers at the counter but they don't show up on the menu board. The menu board items are all cooked in the back and it seems they are made to order. We generally get two specials, one with rice and one with nan. It is enough food for dinner and a lunch or two if you like leftovers. read more

Small place, but lovely food! The chicken biryani was so tasty & quantity sufficient for two. The samosas were bland but the rotis were pretty large and awesome. the only problem being, the takeaway costed $4 more than dine-in!!! This place is great. Sizeable portions of food with HUGE pieces of fresh naan(I'm pretty sure you can float on them for safety in the ocean). The goat curry was very nicely spiced and had a great kick to it, and the frontier chicken was also tender and equally flavorful and spicy. Chicken Biryani was stacked; watching them from the other side of the counter we just wondered when they would stop piling up the plate. Food is fast, cheap, and sizeable. Also they're open basically all the time. It's probably for the best that this place isn't super close to an L stop otherwise I'm pretty sure I'd be a lot fatter. read more

I've been by Tabaq on several occasions and each time I have loved it. Coming in; you approach a steam table full of the different offerings of the day. They'll explain if you aren't familiar with Pakistani or Indian cuisine. On one visit they had Kashmiri Pulau which is an amazing rice dish flavored with saffron, raisins, and almonds. Seriously good. The menu is always changing and I've never had the same thing twice. Quite a few vegetarian options as well as a couple items containing lamb or chicken. But don't be afraid of anything. Everything is flavorful! The Naan is always crispy yet soft on the inside. One piece of naan is good as they are about the same size as a small skateboard. After talking with some of the fellows that work there; they are quite friendly. Always willing to talk and tell you what you're eating and if you show interest or appreciation in their food; they'll hook it up and let you try a few other things. On one particularly hot afternoon, we were given gulaab; which is more or less a fried ball of dough soaked in a sweet syrup of cardamom and rosewater. When served cold, its quite refreshing. We were very appreciative and grateful for this gift. Thank you, again! Tabaq is a total cab stand establishment. Its open 24 hours and always has cabs parked up and down the block. In the basement is a prayer room and always has patrons coming and going. Service is quick, the food is delicious and the employees are friendly. A winning combination if you ask me. Also, its open 24 hours so if you get a 3 am craving for Biriyani and a cup of housemade Chai; this is your spot. read more

Visited for the first time. It is near my work place and walked in for lunch. Food was hot and less options make it easy to choose. Knowing about all North Indian food and cuisine [Pakistan was once North India so it is almost same] it was easy to figure out what I wanted. Was looking for a small portion and spotted Chicken Biriyani. Bought it and it was fresh and hot. No frill biriyani I would say when compared to the more spicy and heavy South Indian version. Liked it as it was moderate spicy, small pieces of dum chicken and tomato, tamarind based gravy added a nice flavour to the well cooked rice. Overall it is a normal quiet joint and after I read these reviews understand that it's open 24x7 and popular with City based residents and cabbies. Man behind the counter was polite and helpful. He offered me to visit on Thursday for their popular mutton pulav. May be I will give a try! read more

ok I can't write essay's like other user have. But this is place is good. I was told to try their Charga, which I have to agree was really delicious. My 2 yr old is a picky eater, but he loved the chicken to. I tried other stuff, like Murgh Cholay, daal, while I liked the daal, hubby like Murgh Cholay, and kids loved the Charga, everyone was happy. Naan were decent size, and tasted good. They would have been better eaten fresh, but we did a take out, so they got soft. Our First night in chicago, and they made it feel like home. I am told this is a taxi driver type place, you never see women, and i'll have to agree I waited out side of the restaurant while hubby went and got the stuff, and didn't see one female pass by. Just excellent. I went here with a buddy late one night and we both got a spicy lamb dish for around $12 after tax. The food was delicious! Also, the serving size was so large that I got three small meals out of it, and I eat quite a bit. This place is awesome. read more

Delicious! I didn't even realize I was a fan of this type of food until I ate here. I got the chicken biryani and beef curry. Both were delicious. Very good sized portions but the one downfall is the chicken had bones in it and if you get it take out then it cost $3 more dollars. Dropped by this restaurant when I was in Chicago for one night for some good old Pakistani food. We ordered the mutton biryani and the goat curry with chapatis. The food was very good and especially the chapatis were very soft (and quite large in size). The only downside was that I originally wanted the beef nihari which was not available. Having tried out a number of the fine establishments on Devon Ave., there were a bunch of recognizable items though one of my favs, Haleem, wasn't on there today. The only item I tried was the mutton curry. I was hoping for more mutton, but the flavor made up for it - not too spicy and not too watery. Not sure why my order came out to $13.05 for just mutton curry, naan, and a side of white rice, but Jawad was nice enough to let me try some Halwa. Maybe that's why it became $13.05? I was full for the whole night though, so it certainly did the trick. Worth a try if you can handle flavorful, slightly spicy Pakistani food. Will certainly be back! read more

This is a great Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant near the down town! Most of the foods are awesome, specially mutton biriyani, chicken biriyani, paratha, grilled chicken, lentil, mutton curry, etc. The price is quite reasonable as well. I love Tabaq! Really good Middle Eastern/Pakistani/Indian food. Very spicy, very tasty. The predominantly Middle Eastern clientele demonstrates the food's authenticity in my view, and everyone is welcome. The owner is really cool. The restaurant is not exactly fancy, but it is very reasonably priced, and you get a lot from what you pay for (you can get a full meal with two entrées, a salad and a giant naan for only $8).They are open 24/7, which is great for late night snacks.
