Until you have eaten the bread at Tabor Bread, you have not had real bread! This is not your fluffy-processed-white bread. Loaves are made with various grains and the textures and flavors are nothing less than exquisite. Crunchy crust, chewy inside, dense - amazing. Forget that old saying that man (or woman) can't live on bread alone. I think I can live on Tabor Bread! If I had to pick a favorite bread, it would be the fig walnut swirl. It's more like a desert than a bread! To be clear, it is not super sweet. It's dense with a crisp crust and swirls of figs, cinnamons and walnut. Perfect balance. I first tried it at the Hollywood Farmers Market and have been hooked on Tabor Bread ever since. They also make a dense bread with coffee that has chocolate chips. Another winner! When I buy a loaf of either, I cut it in thirds and freeze so I can have some on a whim. In addition to bread, they make scones, muffins, quiche and cookies. The buckwheat chocolate chip cookies with sea salt are divine. It was my go to at the Farmers Market until one day they were sold out and I had to settle - or so I thought - for a Crunchy Chocolate Rye Cookie. OMG! Whoever thought of putting rye and Millet seeds in and on a chocolate chocolate chip cookie is genius! These cookies are decadent. The perfect balance of chocolate and crunch, flavor and texture. They are definitely on my "last meal" list. I can no longer wait for Saturdays to visit their booth at the Hollywood Farmers market and make the trip out to their shop/cafe. I often buy a half dozen of the Chocolate Rye cookies for dinner parties. I heat them up in the microwave before serving. They have turned every chocolate chip lover into a Cruncy Chocolate Rye Cookie fanatic! In addition to buying bread and pastries, there is a cafe where you can have sandwiches, quiche and other bakery items. I haven't stayed for a meal but it's always full of people. I really don't get it. Bought a loaf and some rolls for a thanksgiving dinner. The loaf was ok but nothing I'd write home about, and the rolls got passed over for regular bagged ones from the grocery store. They were very dense and chewy and difficult to eat. For the price you pay and the hype I really expected it to be better. I think getting bread from here is more of a status symbol move than anything else. read more

The bread is good and it uses natural yeast and local ingredients. That's about where my positive feedback ends (no small praise tho for those good things though, BTW) after about 3 months of getting bread from them. The service is lackluster, many items are grossly expensive and the hours, inventory and website are all lacking. Basically if you want a loaf, prepare to go early because they sell out quick, have to wait in a long line and then sit and wait even longer which makes no sense, aren't the loafs just on a shelf to grab down? Then once you get said bread you have no idea what's in it because there's no information anywhere on their website or in store even though they could literally write it by hand and tape it to the wall (@Tabor bread: that's right, a few of us actually care what we put in our bodies, especially when it costs 5-6 x other similar foods). All while likely watching at least one staff person seemingly standing near the register not doing anything. !! read more

This is a review of Tabor's bread. I got the $8 olive rosemary bread. Not so much rosemary in a sourdough loaf. It doesn't have the steam crust of Pearl or even N. Seasons. The location is cute and the staff was solid. Bread is disappointing. read more

We stopped by during a road trip through Portland. The building was being remodeled and they had set up a canopy with coffee and pastries. The almond croissant was amazing. The sour dough base and their overload of almonds made the croissant creamy and nutty. We will for sure be coming back, hopefully when they are back in their building. I've been there four times. Service still hasn't improved. I love bread. I really do. From a bread connoisseur's perspective, the bread is decent and good quality. However, the restaurant experience part of Tabor Bread is not worth the visit. Service is slow. I heard, "I'm sorry for taking so long" at least five times I was there. That's not what you want to be hearing when you're waiting for food. Most items are pricey for what you're getting. When I saw the portion size, I was like, "Really? For real?" If you've got some time to kill and like bread, then check it out. However, if you've got a life or have things to do, this might not be the place for you to get some bread. Just go to Pearl Bakery or a supermarket that carries a wide variety from local bakeries. Look at Jim S's review. Couldn't agree more. A great bakery serving the locals in the area. We stop here whenever we are in town. The have a wonderful old hearth for a brick oven(12+ feet wide) and it sets the mood for enjoying baked goods and a good cup of coffee if you choose to hang out. I walked away this morning with a butternut breakfast cookie that was absolutely awesome - savory, mildly sweet, covered with fresh sesame seeds, and a pull/break apart dough layered with butternut flavor. The sourdough white bread loaf was crusty and chewy on the inside. They even grind their own flour - come early - first come first serve for the selection that dwindles during the day. read more

Not impressed at all. The bread itself is OK, not as good as some other bakeries in town. It costs double or triple what those bakeries charge. If you want a sandwich or pastry, it's going to have some weird ingredient on it that'll ruin the taste, just for the sake of being weird, I guess. Again, those things are also wildly overpriced. I was really hoping to love this place, and the location is perfect, but it was pretty underwhelming. Our family tried various items and the bagels were definitely the best of what we had. The olive rosemary loaf was fine, but the brine overpowered everything else. The seasonal focaccia was so extremely salty that I think someone messed up the recipe. Everyone in my family tends to like salt and none of us could eat it. We threw away almost the entire thing. I was hoping the doughnut would be amazing (especially given the price), and it was pretty average. Definitely not worth the price. Overall, Portland (and most cities) just have significantly better options available (often for a lower price), so I doubt we'd return. read more

Tabor Bread is located near the very quiet end of Hawthorne Blvd. I wouldn't have looked for it if it wasn't for Yelp. The building itself is adorable on the outside. The atmosphere is comfortable and laid back. The staff are friendly and the food is simple yet delicious. The star here is of course, the bread. I had the white wheat batard and it was perfect. Chewy and slightly crispy crust with soft middle. If you want to try their sandwiches, get the tomato-onion jam, with goat's milk feta cheese and sprouts. Yum! read more

PIZZA NIGHT (Sunday) Clusterf*#~! If you're gonna have such a night then be prepared. Nice counter guy was overwhelmed. I'm experienced enough as a diner to recognize disorganization and it was evident tonight. They forgot our entree salad. We were attracted to the nice little sign offering $3.75 slices, but then we're told no slices were available except for the basic Margharita. Then the wait was expected to be 20-25 minutes. In the end Pizza was average, nothing memorable. However, the Carot Salad was excellent! Staff was nice. For the premium prices I expected so much more. BREAKFAST Super cool space with a great balance of drinks, baked snacks, and hearty items. The quality is a cut above most other-like places, but you pay the price. I'm a magnet for breakfast sandwiches, so it's not an overstatement they their small biscuit concoctions are great. Unfortunately, they're quite small and priced at $7.50 minimum. Friendly staff, fairly good parking, understated. A winner. ...and they're one of the few vendors at the Hollywood Farmer's Market that frequently doesn't give samples. The folks at Tabor Bread put real craftsmanship into their baking. Their attention to detail really pays off. In addition to the obvious quality of the baked goods, I'd like to point out what they did before even opening the doors. The building had been there for quite a long time, and they did a renovation that included removal of the old flat roof, and the installation of a beautiful pitched timber frame roof. You can enjoy both the view of the beams and the flavor of their food. This is a terrific addition to the neighborhood. I am visiting Portland on vacation and discovered this bakery tucked into a neighborhood near our Airbnb and ended up coming back just about every day for a week. We tried their coffee (vanilla oat lattes are amazing), avocado toast, bagels and cream cheese, oat cookies and croissants. Lots of good options if you are looking for whole grain. Everything we tried was great- really high quality, and you can just taste the difference of food that is homemade and freshly baked each day. The service was friendly and the ambience is great- kind of cozy inside with high wooden beams/ceilings and stools near a big window and outside some tables on the street are perfect to read at or people watch. Highly recommend, we will definitely be back the next time we visit. read more

Tabor Bread has become one of my favorite places in Portland! The products are amazing, but I don't buy much bread there. I do buy my organic locally produced and milled flours there for baking at home, and have breakfast of lunch there frequently. The pastries and treats are fabulously delicious, and made with whole grain flours and sourdough so they are good for us, too. It seems miraculous. The staff are the best, dealing patiently with grumpy and uncooperative clients (see negative reviews), and being so kind and generous to all. The new site is great but still being developed. It will be splendid soon. The baklava chocolate croissant is so far the best pastry I have ever eaten, anywhere in the world, and that includes Vienna and Budapest. read more

I just took the sourdough 101 bread making class and it was incredible. The instructor was phenomenal and I learned so much about the bread making process, folding, shaping and scoring bread. The passion and love Tabor Bread has for making bread comes through with this class. I have a deeper appreciation for this art and can't wait to practice making bread on my own. read more

The biscuit sandwich knocked my socks off and I was glad I had visited just for that. I also tried the buckwheat chocolate chip cookie and rye chai cookie. They were unique and tasty but not something I would want all the time. Tabor Bread, I love your bread. I love your salad with bread. I love the way the honey and butter you serve compliments your bread like I'm doing right now. I love your creativeness and the fact that you grind your own flour. I love how you put bread out with a tin to collect money in exchange for your delicious wares, and trust neighbors to be fair. What I don't love? The lines. The lack of space to sit down. The service that is sometimes friendly, sometimes indifferent. That said, baking your own bread is a novelty, an act almost of rebellion in a high-gluten-free climate. It's also an act of service for people, like me, who love bread. Its bread itself is a feast, enough justification to give this place a 5 star and I haven't mentioned how good the mom's chicken sandwich is! I have always loved the bread and treats at Tabor Bread. I went in to the new space on Belmont for the first time and was so excited for my order. I think I waited around 40 minutes for a bagel and cream cheese and coffee. I could have gotten over this part but the actual service from the person at the register and a few others I spoke with about the whereabouts of my order was really bad; bad meaning minimizing, condescending like they really could care less about my concerns. Maybe they were having a crappy day but I would hope they would remember that there are many wonderful bakeries in Portland and a customer who felt dismissed there would happily go elsewhere. read more

This neighborhood bakery is wonderful... Fresh, amazing bread and pastries. Their recipes are unique, the red wheat and anadama breads are unlike anything I have ever eaten. I recommend buying a couple loaves and freezing some wrapped up tight. Toast never tasted so good. Their pastries are the definition of loving and eating well.
