Came here pretty late for dinner and got the combo meat platter with kurobuta pork and beef belly. Kurobuta Pork 3/5 - It was a little more chewier than I had liked and it was pretty average. Nothing wrong with it when dipped in the sauces which were really good Beef Belly 4/5 - It was also a little chewy but not as much as the pork. I liked the marbling on it though. Overall, I'm not sure if I would come back here again but I really do like the presentation of everything. The let you customize the given ponzu and sesame sauce with green onion, radish, and garlic which I really liked. Service was also very attentive and I enjoyed my time here. read more

Tried out this place the other day and it was delicious!. The place itself is pretty cool with really dope art work and the place is clean and feels very welcoming. But the place is kinda small so coming here with a big group isn't ideal but then again I think they have outdoor seating . The service was really cool, they weren't busy when we went so the service was quick and simple, which made the experience worth wanting to come back. The food was really good and very fulfilling. Tasty meat, attentive service, and quick turnaround. This restaurant location is in a plaza so there's plenty of parking, you can put yourself on a waitlist in advance. We were seated pretty quickly for a group of 4 on a weekend lunch, but if you find yourself waiting.. there's coffee shops and donut shops nearby. The seating structure is like a circle so you're not really facing your friends, it's a typical shabu place where you sit next to each other. Tbh, probably not great for larger groups. You can choose your meat type & size, broth, and sides. I went with the leanest meat and asked for a large because I was trying to hit a protein goal. The meat quality was really good, tasty and tender. I got the classic broth cause I get more excited about the sauces. (You can curate your own sauces by adding sesame, garlic, spice, etc which I really like. ) Overall, really good meat and the rice was good -- the only thing I wished was if there was a larger meat option. I was surprised the large was around 6oz and I was still pretty hungry in the end. read more

First experience at Tabu Shabu for date night and WOW it was fantastic!!! This was my first time having a dinner experience like this and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The waiter ran through the entire menu with us top to bottom, making recommendations along the way. I had the miso base and angus wagyu as my meat--extremely delicious! Tabu Shabu in Costa Mesa is the same company as the Tabu Shabu in Bressi Ranch (Carlsbad area) but the service and food were better at the other location in Carlsbad vs here in Costa Mesa. The Service was nice and friendly but not very attentive nor detail oriented. They forgot my drink, didn't bring enough chopsticks and we had to ask twice to get these items - not just one extra ask but two more times after we initially asked. The parking lot is under construction but there's still places. When you arrive you can check in on the Yelp app. Be prepared for a long wait during busy times! Why I also prefer the Bressi Ranch location is because they don't nickel and dime you there the way they do at this location. Here in Costa Mesa pretty much every menu item has an up charge. The noodles have an up charge, the broth has an up charge. Overall, all of the prices are higher here than at the Bressi Ranch location. Our favorite broths are Tonkotsu and Sukiyaki and we've learned after a few times here that the Reserve angus is just as good as the premium meat for less money. Pretty much all the noodles have an up charge (more nickel and diming) but if you don't want udon (free) their Shirataki noodles are also free and very tasty (similar to glass noodles) Overall we love the Bressi Ranch location but since we live in Orange County we come here because it is tasty - we are just prepared for an expensive meal with just ok service. read more

First time Shabu Shabu... now I'm ruined for regular meals. Came into Tabu Shabu as a total Shabu Shabu rookie and left wondering why no one introduced me to this sooner. This place is dangerous--in the best way. From the moment we sat down, Mustafa, Wells, and Michelle made sure we didn't look like confused cavemen staring at boiling broth. They were patient, fun, and genuinely excited to walk us through the experience. No food shame. No judgment. Just vibes and guidance. The food was insanely fresh, the broth was comforting on a spiritual level, and cooking your own meal somehow makes it taste 37% better. Science probably backs that up. Shoutout again to the staff--Mustafa with the calm confidence, Wells keeping things smooth, and Michelle making sure everything was on point. You can tell they actually care, and that makes the whole experience next-level. If you've never tried Shabu Shabu, start here. If you're a fan of Shabu or just curious to try the best, Tabu Shabu is the place to go! After sampling several spots, I can confidently say this is the ultimate Shabu experience. The food portions are spot on--filling but not overwhelming--and everything is incredibly fresh. The staff is beyond accommodating, always happy to bring extra sauce, utensils, or anything else you need. What really sets Tabu Shabu apart is the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Solid shabu spot -- the meats were high quality and like that they offer a grass-fed beef option! I went with the large size which is ~5.5 oz, and it was a good amount of food though I think I'd opt for double protein if I were to go when very hungry. The only thing that left me wanting were the sauces -- the goma and ponzu were both just okay so that was a bit of a bummer since the sauces are so key, but everything else was great. The wooden plates/bowls they use are also so cute and the servers were so friendly and sweet. They don't take reservations and there was a small wait but they were turning seats quite quickly and efficiently. read more

first timer here! Have to say, this was probably one of the best introductions to hot pot possible. Overly happy this wasn't all you can eat as I fear I would have been overwhelmed, a straight forward menu like theirs made it great & straight forward! The server also helped so much in explaining how everything worked/tasted and what was most popular. This place is awesome. The staff is friendly, and they clearly like each other. They create a fun atmosphere which is necessary for this type of experience. The food is bomb. In fact, be careful if this is your first tabu shabu experience you won't want to try other spots cuz you'll just be let down. Doesn't really matter if you're pescatarian or love red meat they have good food no matter your preferences. I love Tabu Shabu - Huntington Beach location so I assumed this would be the same thing. Unfortunately, it is not consistent and was disappointed. I ordered the Tonkatsu which is what I order at the other location and it does not taste the same. The broth tasted like it was watered down and it did not have any flavor. I had to add soy sauce to see if it could help out a bit. The meat and veggies were good though, that is why they are getting two stars. It was also clean. Customer service could be better. There is plenty of parking and it is open later than the other locations. Other locations close at 8 p.m. and this one closes at 11 p.m. read more

My favorite Shabu spot EVER. I've been to so many shabu spots in Orange County (and beyond) but Tabu Shabu has to be my favorite spot. Been coming here for over 5 years now and will keep on coming! What I love: The food is amazing. I love that their Sukiyaki broth is more concentrated than some other shabu spots so it flavors the meat well. You have to get the egg on the side to dip your meat in. I always get their Zabuton Wagyu short rib. It's so bomb! Their crunchy chilli garlic edamame is also very very good! The servers are great! They usually remember us which is nice. One of the OG girls there always remember us and even suggested this onion & Serrano pepper off the menu dish and made our experience even better. The downside of this place: The only downside is that 1 out of 4 times the Zabuton Wagyu Short Rib meat is inconsistent. Sometimes it's more rough/tough which I hate. The seating and how the pots are spaced is too close. Sometimes you get a decent spot where it's not too close but some spots are way too close. Both me and my friend kept bumping the customer next to us (and vice versa) and you can tell that the customer next to us was uncomfortable as well and that there wasn't enough space to put all of her meats and plates. I would suggest that servers skip a seating spot for some of the areas that are too tight. read more

Yes! So many GF options. I'm allergic to gluten and go here pretty much monthly (sometimes weekly or more 🤷🏻‍♀️). Everything GF is noted on the menu. Pretty much avoid certain broths and noodles and you're good!

I don't believe Tabu Shabu offers reservations. They do, however, have a waitlist that can be joined via Yelp. I highly recommend joining the Yelp waitlist and getting there early.

The beef belly is delicious and a little cheaper, but the ribeye will melt in your mouth! It was my sister's birthday and they gave her an ice cream as a dessert. When we went, we spent about $40 a person, but I think that this is definitely on the higher side. We all left completely stuffed and with another entire meal for the next day. We averaged 11.5 oz of meat per person. To give you an idea A proper serving size would probably be around 8 ounces of meat (or less) and the veggie plate with broth.

However, what I was recently served at Kaizen Shabu last week was, to my mind, an egregious example of a restaurant offering well below the bare minimum of what should be expected for the prices listed (and my photos will show this, I believe). At the outset, I want to say I have no grievances with the servers. Our server was kind, attentive, and was elegantly multitasking. Bravo. Now, the food: we ordered the salmon "sashimi" plate, and what we were handed was a platter of the thinnest, grainiest, obviously-thawed and poorly sliced salmon I've ever eaten in my life. I was a bit shocked. At Cal Shabu Shabu (and other shabu places I tend to frequent more often), sashimi is... sashimi. It *looks* like sashimi because it IS sashimi: a piece of salmon purchased by the restaurant and knife-cut into appropriate portions depending on what portion size the customer has ordered. It is sashimi that gleans in the light, where the striations of fat and tissue are visible to the naked eye on the fish itself. As you can see from my photos, we were served paper-thin salmon that I could barely peel off of the plate with my chopsticks without ripping the fish into smaller, grainier pieces. It was all but inedible, in my opinion. This is not sashimi, and to serve such a thing for the price listed is beyond atrocious: it is an outright deception. Now, onto the side of veggies and noodles that come with every order of meat or fish. Perhaps the cooks could not be bothered, but what I received was broken tendrils of 2-inch udon haphazardly thrown into a bowl. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the chefs, with a dwindling supply of food nearer the end of the night, or if this restaurant truly does not care about the quality of what they are serving customers. Again, I think my pictures speak for themselves. I used to love coming here as the atmosphere was chic, and the servers are so kind. After my last dining experience, however, I cannot justify the price of my bill in the face of the quality of the food I am being served. I won't be returning, sadly. I hope the manager has an opportunity to look at these photos and perhaps reassess what can be done to improve what they are serving their customers.

I really adore Shabu Shabu! Who doesn't like cooking there own broth in a cool bar along the beach? Definitely worth a visit. We arrived here in Costa Mesa, was greeted promptly and sat down on the only 3 low bar seats in the entire restaurant (best seats in the house) All the staff were super friendly, very polite and quick. I only got one of their names; Jose was on point walking us through the menu and it turns out we can customize the veggie plate and the Mega Man portion of meat- I ended up getting half Certified Angus Beef Ribeye and Prime ribeye. The meat was amazingly sliced and consistent with the size and marbling. They even gave an extra few ounces I noticed (whoever was the meat cutter, you did a fantastic job) and the veggie plates were beautiful and fresh although that is standard in Shabu. The broth at the end was epic, I finished all of the food in front of me. I could tell that the people who worked here had a passion for serving great food and connection. When we arrived there was a wait, but the staff was very friendly and offered us drinks. After a few hits of sake and beer, we were seated in no time. With choices like shabu, sukiyaki, and barbeque, I was a bit torn on what to try. Our waiter recommended we try a half and half of shabu and sukiyaki. "Sounds like a plan," I said as I opted for the beef combo. The quality of the meat is awesome. Not some crappy protein that turns shit brown and tough; no, this place is legit. Awesome!! This was my first experience with shabu and I am hooked! It was sooo good - fresh and delicious. We stopped in for lunch and had such a great experience I can't wait to go back. We had the rib eye and the salmon, with the spicy miso base. The vegetables were fresh and displayed appetizingly. We couldn't wait to get started "playing with our food". Favorite spot for Shabu! This place packs up quick, so go early! On Tuesdays they have two for one on drinks - so rad. Get the sukiyaki broth + rib eye and you won't be disappointed. Any meat they have is good bye the rib eye is my favorite. Also ask for the raw pasteurized egg to dip the meat in. I was nervous about it at first but it's really, really good on he beef. 5 stars forever!!!! read more

I came here last Sunday with my girlfriend and had an amazing experience. The food was delicious and you can tell it was the best quality meats. The service was great and very attentive! We love this place and come often. I made a mistake and made my broth with too much of a white pepper flavor... Jose literally came up with a crazy combination to add to my broth to make it better: he then created that broth for me to take home with my leftovers. This place is so yummy. The whole experience is really fun. The servers were nice, my water was always filled, and i got a free saki shot!!! I made a rice porridge after i cooked everything and that was delicious. I wish i wasn't so full because that was almost better than cooking everything my self!! I was honestly surprised by how affordable the menu was. At first, I was a little skeptical about the quality because of the prices, but the food definitely did not disappoint. We ordered a variety of hand rolls and cut rolls, and everything tasted fresh and delicious. The portions were just right--not oversized, but definitely not too small either. I also enjoyed a cold Kirin beer with the meal. The service was good, the staff was friendly, and the sushi chefs looked very focused and serious about their craft. You could tell they took pride in what they were preparing. Our total bill was only about $98 for a family of five, which is an excellent deal for fresh sushi in Orange County. We will definitely be back to try more items from the menu. Affordable, fresh, friendly, and satisfying. Sushi District was a pleasant surprise!

The curry was more of a broth that had the perfect amount of curry flavor. Not too spicy and the soft white big potato halves made the dish feel like a warm, hearty bowl of comfort food. The rice was some of the tastiest I've ever had. Not sure what it's seasoned with but it's yellow and stick and delicious and balanced the curry broth perfectly. I ordered the marinated chicken with rice. It's served with a wonderful fish light fish sauce that you often get with vermicelli dishes at Vietnamese restaurants. The chicken was a thigh meat that was tender and flavorful. The rest rice was the perfect accompaniment that filled me up in a good way. Highly recommend both dishes. They use no seed oils, everything is fresh, made to order and be patient as the food doesn't come out right away. Good, healthy, fresh food takes time and worth the wait. They have a bunch of boba and coffee drink options that many around us had ordered and seem to really be enjoying. This place will go on our list of must return and perfect for those summer evening date night spots in one of the best beach cities in all of California.
