I was on a road trip to chico with some relatives and we stopped in here for the evening. Very family friendly place. There's food to feed the screaming little ones and decent drinks for the older set. There's good music and lots of games to play. I recommend getting aforementioned youngins into shuffleboard fast or they'll come begging you for quarters for the pinball machines. Anyway, if you want to just hang out rather than do some serious drinking this is a great place. read more

I love the Tacklebox! They have the best grilled cheese ever!!! I love their karaoke nights too! They need to offer something on thurs like they do tues to drawing more people! The improvements to the place are still underway and are looking great. They do need a better smoking area though so everyone doesn't have to enter and leave through smokers smoke. I hate the smell. I think the Tackle Box is below average. I think there food is to greasy but I like that they have peanuts. I also don't like that there are kids serving your food like do you think they washed there hands after they went to the bathroom probably not, but I do like their pizza and I think it's cool that they have a dance floor and a jukebox and you can't forget they also sometimes have live music. All and all, I think the tackle box sucks. read more

Wow reading the reviews on this bar are hilarious! My favorite thing I read so far was they must give a special discount if you have a mullet or something. I will definitely agree with that. This is by far the WORST bar I have ever been to. The group of people that go there all at once range from tweakers, coyboys who are the rudest coyboys I've ever met, girls dressed up like they are from dancing with the stars and hicks. Rude bartenders, rude people, weird setup.I will never come back, EVER. I wish they had an option of no stars or negative stars. This place was a complete joke. You don't get more Chico Home town than the T-Box, the best Road House bar and food experience. Low key, blue collar, but the food is the best! I had some Mac n Cheese that was to die for! Don't order a double burger, you will never finish it! But the flavor and portions are amazing. The Bands that play there are great, they even kareoki one night a week, and always free peanuts, ya get to throw your shells on the floor. Not fancy, just fun. And the bartenders are the best! They also dance on the bar occasionally! So watch your beer! Had to move mine twice. The wait for the food was a little long, but I found it worth the wait. Tacklebox.. not a bad place, but the bouncer Todd is not a bouncer, he wants to throw the first punch, he does not know how to calm a situation. I have personally watched him punch a guy that was being held by two men already. He escalates a situation to the point he starts a fight instead of calming it. This review is of the bar and it is both a 5 and a 1 star review at the same time. I am a longtime customer who is fed up with the place continually making unforced errors. The place's strengths are a number of their regular employees who will get to know you and treat you well. They also have had some horrendous servers who fortunately have come and gone. AFAIK it is the most fun bar in Chico if you want live music, dancing and for being social. Having said that, the crowd appears to be in decline- but it varies radically depending on when you are there and who the band is. Unfortunately, whoever is booking the bands no longer can cut the mustard. On average in the past couple of years good bands are becoming rare and the number of stinky ones has multiplied. Then to compound that error they often times book more than one a night. Then there is the issue of the severely messed up website. The bands are hard to find and the entire site is almost a textbook example of bad design. They need to stop screwing around and hire a real professional to build them a new one. Among the outstanding issues are cleanliness. Nobody can be bothered to clean the piss off of the floor- so you better plan on standing a long ways back. Being a former server I know the business. If they are so screwed up in the head regarding issues like that... Then there is the issue of the layout. Not long ago they started a renovation that on one hand is a massive improvement that increased the usable space. On the other hand they never finished and they waste tons of precious space on things like video games and pool tables that hardly anybody ever uses. That is costing them tons of money as those spaces should be filled with even more tables. Every table at a well run place can be worth $$$$. The bottom line is there are many things to like- and a number of needless mistakes that they keep making. If they pulled it together this place could be a full 5 stars. read more

Called ahead of time because I realized I needed a specific fishing hook at 1130pm night before I was heading out to fish in the morning with my buddy. Went on their website they say to just ask a staff member and they'll sell you "limited selection of fishing gear". Gentleman I call on the phone is very nice and assured me they'll be able to help even though it's late. I pull up, lady at the bar tells me to go around to the kitchen. I go to the kitchen and ask the lady there about the hook. She tells me she's busy with orders and can't help me because she "can't go in the back right now". Okay? So I told her guy on the phone said they'd be able to help me, she gives me an attitude and tells me "Well I told you I'm busy, so you're going to have to wait". Tell her that's totally fine, I don't expect someone to drop everything to help me immediately. She goes back to the kitchen and I hear her bitching about me. Finally she comes out asks someone else and they say to just tell me it's closed which she does. Seems like a poorly run situation as some people tell you one thing and then others do something else. Lady in the kitchen obviously just hates her job and should probably find something else to do. Also they don't ID at the door so if you got a fake or are underage could be a solid spot to drink at. Real shame because guy on the phone was super nice and lady at bar seemed kind as well. Takes one bad apple to ruin the barrel however and I also didn't get the hook I needed. So change your name to Country Bar instead of tackle box cause y'all don't give a damn about fishing apparently. read more

I was super unimpressed with one of the bar tenders. . I felt she did not care and did not give the attention to the paying customer. To be honest, it actually just pissed me off. In addition, I felt that everyone that had connections to the bar was behind the counter, not doing anything productive while customers were waiting. The gentlemen (it looked like they could be the owners) were standing there in a group just staring which looked a tad creepy. It seems like they have a lack of business sense in the bar scene. Ya know, some places are just worth going to for the experience. We love the tackle box. There are all kinds there from redneck bikers to professional folk. One of us is a Ph.D. and the other a retired professional, and we are just fine with the crowd. The food is good, the music is good, and the house dawg often greets you at the door. Very few customers but the wait was well over 30 minutes for lunch at 2pm. The cook seemed like he'd had a rough night; no apron, sweating heavily, wiping his bare hands on his greasy shirt before going back to assembling a pizza. Alligator (deep fried) was alright, though rather small portions. Burger was greasy but decent sized. Fish tacos were good. Pizza was inedible! The dough was so salty that there was simply no way to eat more than one bite. Sent it back. We were told there was no salad, yet the burger had lettuce and tomato and onion, and the 'gator came on a bed of shredded cabbage...? Might go back for a shot of whiskey and some ammo, or even a firearm. But skip the food. read more

This place is a filthy dive. Before I walked in the front doors I was blasted in the face with the smell of old cigarette smoke, ashes and trash from the two trash cans outside front door. Went inside to sit at a table. Sat there 10 min. Only one bartender and two patrons in the bar area. No service and no acknowledgement that we were there. Walked over to kitchen area to order. Guy just ignored us for a few minutes while chopping tomatoes. Then walked off. We decided to go somewhere else. This is not my first time here. Had similar experience on a prior occasion. Never ate here, and never would, this review is for the store. Back in the day when they opened I tried to support the place and bought over-priced stuff from them. I believe it was opened by a couple long-time chico ex-frat dudes, at least they always talked about 'keggers at the river'..and these guys were like in the 50's and 60s'! As time went on, they stated acting like they couldn't care less if I bought anything from them, I used to have to go find one to ring me up as they would be outside smoking and shooting the sh*t and got snotty when u asked if they wanted to sell something. ... Ok so I have heard great things about this place so we decided to try it . So the food is good if you can get past basics cleaning does not exist there , it's filthy !!!!! We decided to give this place a try on a lunch break, and wished we hadn't. The service was nonexistent, for both food and drinks. It took forever to get someone to take our order, and the bartender never once offered us a drink. This is even more remarkable given we were waiting 40 minutes for our sandwiches. The food was substandard at best. Mine had bacon in it (which should be the best part of any sandwich) but sadly it was undercooked and inedible. I wouldn't go back if you paid me to and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either. read more

Be prepared for bartenders with attitudes who will charge you more for drinks if they don't like you. I've been here a few times and they were all great, Friendly and prompt staff, Good Food, Good selection of beer and alcohol, Good entertainment, One time I was at the bar having a beer and the owner came out with some fresh battered and deep fried Cat Fish and invited me and others at the bar to join him and some friends the fish was great, I've also been there twice when shots were offered to all, on the house. Free peanuts are always a plus while having beer. The bathroom is always clean. And there are plenty of TVs with a variety of sports events on. All the times I've been here every one of the bars patriots made me fill welcome and are willing to invite me into a conversation and share stories. As to the sporting goods store all the staff I've dealt with are knowledgeable in their fields and are happy to shear secrets and skills in hunting and fishing. I usually do not make comments about places I eat but after my trip to the tackle box on Feb 21,2015 I felt I needed to post a review. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE. First when we walked in we had no ideal how to go about ordering food so we just sat down thinking some one would come up and offer to help. No one did. We finally got up and asked. Once we placed our order it took forever to get it. They said they ran out of beer batter for the fish? When our plates came I had to ask for silverware only to be told that it was over there to which the woman pointed over by the door and we could go get it ourselves . What kind of place would give you a meal with nothing to eat it with. We never did find any silverware so we just ate with our fingers. The food was bad the fish was undercooked and cold in places ,seemed very greasy and then the little round things what ever they may be, cold as ice in the center. It not like they were busy only about 10 people in the whole place. The only good thing about this place was the free peanuts. I have had some bad meals in my days but this place was the worst by far and the service rates way way down. I would give this place a BIG ZERO if I could read more

The staff at the gun counter are very un-experienced with current CA gun laws. Although talking to them you would think they wrote the laws. Prices on ammo and firearms are way to high as well. You can buy the same stuff online and have it shipped for a fraction the price. Or go to walmart for ammo etc. read more
