I came here when visiting from out of town and was so surprised to find such an authentic restaurant in Johnson City. The food was incredibly fresh, and the portions were perfect. The service was amazing too; the owner / manager took the time to walk us through the menu and checked on us several times. Just stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! Taco Chulo is a newer spot with a clean, modern aesthetic and a casual, welcoming atmosphere. You order at the counter and seat yourself, which makes it perfect for a quick lunch or laid-back meal. The owner/manager was incredibly friendly and took the time to explain the menu and the concept behind the restaurant, which was a really nice touch. The food speaks for itself--authentic Mexican cuisine that is fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Hands down some of the best authentic tacos I've had in the area. The sauces were also excellent, each with its own distinct flavor and the perfect complement to the food. Somebody send the Michelin team and give this place a Bib Gourmand. This taqueria is an experience! Being from Texas and growing up on the Mexican border, I must admit I did not have high hopes for Mexican food in Tennessee. However, this place did not disappoint! From the moment I walked in you could smell the wonderful aroma of each dish. The service was incredible and they even provided some samples since it was our first time here. They truly wanted to make sure we loved what we ordered. Every single dish had a layer of flavors and was truly a journey of the tastebuds. The portions were large enough to share but I'm not sure you will want to since every bite tasted like a warm hug. Easily makes the top Mexican food restaurants list I've ever had. Believe the negative reviews here and on other sites. First time here and it is WAY overpriced. We got 1 burrito, 2 shrimps tacos, 2 bean meals and 2 cokes and it was $96. I'm not kidding. The food was not good. The meat we had "cheek" was so fatty and slimy. The bean dish was ok but $21 for literally some beans with a sprinkle of meat. Out of 8 of us, no one liked anything. The restaurant is newly open. It's very easy to find with a large lighted sign out front. There is plenty of angled parking across a traffic lane along both sides of the building. The handicapped spaces are Handicapped spaces are first (next to the road) in the rows on either side of the building. They are not the closest spaces to the entrance so be aware if you have mobility issues. Walking in, we were greeted by several staff members from behind the counter. They quickly explained the location of the menu (readily visible behind the counter) and then place your order at the counter. Ordering initially gave a fast food vibe but this was dispelled once the food arrived. The menu is diverse but simple and provides a lot of options. Once we placed our order we found a seat. Seating is a mix of tables and booths. There is also a nice patio as well. There were no chips and salsa, although they can be ordered. They did bring a tray of four sauces while we were waiting. The mayo-type sauce is deceptively hot. The heat is quick and intense but does not last long. The green sauce is maybe the best I have ever had with massive flavor and some heat. The light red sauce is pretty hot and has nice flavor. The darker red is a chipotle with some heat and good flavor. Our food was brought to our table in about 10 minutes. The quesabirria tacos and carne asada bowl with water to drink came to $35. The tacos were stuffed with birria and topped with onions and cilantro. There was a crust of cheese on the outside of the freshly made corn tortillas that provided a nice crunch. The consomme has lots of flavor and pieces of birria, onions, and cilantro. There was a thick layer of light oil on top as well. Although the consomme had excellent flavor I liked the green sauce on the tacos over the consomme to minimize the oil intake. The carne asada bowl was very flavorful. The cactus leaves were a unique addition that added a new dimension to the flavor. There was enough meat to get some in nearly every bite. All ingredients were fresh and flavorful. Taco Chulo is a great addition to the growing Hispanic food options in the area. The food is exceptional and the staff is knowledgeable and attentive. I saw this place on Tiktok from Chaparra and Jose's pages. Here in East TN I had yet to find ANY good "Mexican" food because I come from Cali so I know real Mexican Food. I figured hey let's give it a try and I'm so glad I did. I got the chicken tinga bowl and it was soooo good! Great flavor all around. They no longer have tamales. Service & Food are top notch! Very authentic Jalisco style Mexican food. The dishes are very unique to Jalisco and absolutely the freshest you'll have anywhere near Johnson city. If you want some real authentic Mexican food in the Tri Cities this is the place to go. We got the Carne en su Jego, the Costillas en salsa, and some tacos. All of the food was delicious and came out hot. The horchata was delicious as well. The service was also top notch. The employees were quick to explain how to order and helped us with any questions we had about the menu. We got our food quick and they did a great job checking in on us consistently. We hadn't been in since they opened and decided to stop in for lunch. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! The owner recognized us and came over to speak and give us a rundown of the menu, and before you know it, he had come back with a small sample of each of the meats for both my husband and I to try. There wasn't one that was not to like, each were different and full of so much flavor. He gave us some time and we went to the front to place our order and that's when we got to sample each of the homemade juices they serve. Again, all were just as good as the next and made it hard to choose. I went with the horchata while my husband went with the cucumber lime. When we ordered he got the Chicken Tinga Burrito Bowl and I got the Quesobirria Tacos. These were not small portions either friends. Delicious food and fantastic customer service!! I'm gluten free and typically avoid going out to eat because it can be risky and I know it's annoying for the hostess/server answering a million questions about what's safe for me to eat. When we called to place an order here, we mentioned gluten free and the hostess answering the phone was incredibly helpful and overall just so friendly about everything. He explained which items on the menu would be safe for me and went out of his way to check on a few other items so I had more options. I truly appreciated the customer service here and the food was wonderful!! Portion sizes were perfect, everything tasted great, and they included several salsas for us with our chips.
