The food was decent the first time I ate here, so I decided to bring my friends this morning who were visiting from out of town. As soon as our drinks were delivered, I spotted a large cockroach crawling on the wall beside the booth very close to my friends arm. We decided to leave without disrupting the restaurant. Came here for the birria solely but noticed happy hour was closing in the next 10 minutes to me and my bf showing up. sat down and asked about the happy hour and the server didn't even try to mention it because of the close time between it ending, and i said well it's not 7 yet so i would like to know the happy hour. that was my first red flag , then ordered a chimichanga an birria and my first bite of the birria there was a major lack of flavor, the tortillas were chewy, and the meat was very dry and bland. The chimichanga was comparable to frozen cheap prepackaged food also. chicken had no flavor, beans and rice were reheated and not fresh. last thjng to add was i got a margarita, it was the right amount of tequila for my preference but extremely watered down and not enjoyable to drink. no flavor once again. Everyone here is super down to Earth. The food is amazing! I have been going here for a good few years and the wait time is always super moderate and the pricing is good. The food always comes out hot and it is very colorful inside. A very family oriented place with hospitable staff. I recommend this to anyone who wants an affordable, delicious meal. read more

I wish I could have liked this place since it's locally owned and so close to the house. I'm normally pretty easy to please however, I just couldn't find any light in this restaurant. My chicken in my carbon was dry and oh so crispy. My enchilada tasted and smelled like feet. My fiancé thought I was being dramatic at first but she got one wiff and felt sorry for me. The rice and beans were bland. The queso was lackluster and had no flavor. The carnitas were also underperforming. The only decent thing was the coke and the horchata. Have a seat in one of the brown plastic chairs and get ready for a _meal_. The food is simple and well prepared. The prices are inexpensive without being suspiciously cheap (ie: You can be certain it's beef you're eating). The staff is super friendly and the service is good. If I have one reservation - last time I ordered a Taco al Pastor that was extremely greasy. I'm guessing it was just from the bottom of the pan. Came across TDO while looking for a neighborhood TexMex place to get a quick snack. Won't be back. Service on a Friday night was slow, despite a small crowd. Chips were pretty good -- crispy, and with enough structure to hold the needed salsa load. Unfortunately, said salsa was not up to the task -- a little sweet, and not nearly enough chunkage. Nachos and queso were less than pedestrian, despite prices higher than your typical neighborhood joint. Folks were nice, but the value just isn't there -- find another spot. read more

Taco De Oro is around the corner from my house so I go there often. I usually going during lunch because of my work schedule. They have a $7.99 lunch special. This restaurant is family owned and operated which I really like. The waitress always remembers I like onions on top of my enchilada's. I hope others try this little gem. read more

My husband brought food for the family home today from Taco De Oro. All looked really good when he put it out on the table. I liked the salsa as it is the kind I like which I think is cooked. If you like fresh stuff, you won't. I took a bite of a tamale. It tasted a little weird. I tasted another one and ended up spitting it out. We had beef enchiladas and tacos. Not very impressed. Queso just taste like melted cheese. Everything was missing flavor and quality is just so-so. My little one got a children's meal of chicken strips and fries. He said the fries tasted like Jack in the Box (that's a good things) but when he asked me to cut his chicken I couldn't cut it with a knife. It was tough and stringy. Too many decent Tex Mex places in the area to have this again. read more

If you have never tried Taco De Oro for breakfast, you are missing out! I had the steak fahita and eggs along with homemade tortillas, rice and beans along with the green and red salsa. If you like great authentic mexican food don't eat here. We were the only ones in the restaurant, yet it took 25 minutes to get our meal. Food was sub standard at best. Refried beans and rice were plain with no seasoning, had to salt for taste. Enchiladas were disgusting, tasting like they could have come from a can. The cheese puff was bad as well, I could tell the cheese came from a can. We felt ill after eating there. We used a coupon from the Entertainment Book. You get what you don't pay for! With a thousand mexican restaurants to choose from in Houston, this is one that you would come to for quick lunch or dinner or if you have a specific dish that you really like. The service is always pleasant but the prices are just a tad high than you would expect for a place with such little ambiance. Having said thatt, its one of those places you cheer to " make it". After running kids around all day and early evening, I just wanted a place to come where it was fairly quiet and I could have a few beers and read my new Rolling Stone. I would give the meal a solid 3 stars and wouldnt hesitate to come back. We weren't impressed with this place the chicken tenders for the kids were stale. The tacos I ordered didn't taste right and meat apparently was old and probably sat out before it was served to us.
