Wanted to give this place a chance since its reviews are polarizing. Here is my take: Service: excellent, fast, friendly, and welcoming. Dining area: kept clean but old and worn out. Fans kept dining area comfortable and no smells of the restrooms (that is a biggie for me). Chips and salsas: chips were fresh but you can taste the old frying oil used to fry the chips. The red and green salsas are good! Tasty and well-balanced in seasoning. Main dish I ordered was the Enchiladas al Carbon with beef fajita. This dish explains why the reviews are polarizing. The fajita was seasoned and marinated to perfection! Not dry or bland. I really enjoyed the beef fajita! The rice and beans however...wow. I felt like I ate pure salt. The texture of the rice was cooked perfectly-not soggy or dried out but the saltiness was too much!! The beans were your average refried beans but were also too salty! It seems like they read reviews and over-seasoned to be on the safe side. Customers can always add salt, but when the overall profile of the dish is just salty, there's not much that can remedy that. The enchiladas were okay. I wasn't a fan of the sauce- it was too sour, and I wasn't expecting that. I will mention the portion size was great! To wrap this review up--I did mention the salt problem to our server and she charged my dish as an a-la-carte item. She was a sweetheart! I want this place to succeed and gain more customers. They also don't have an option to order chips and salsa - you have to buy chips separately and salsa separately. Umm...what? When ordering, I ordered chips and salsa, but the not-so-pleasant manager claims you have to specify and buy both items separately (mentioned this at pickup). I went into "Taco De Oro" after years of ordering and picking up and visited them to dine in a few times. We went In to support the neighborhood restaurant & On this visit I was so disappointed and let down after we returned a full plate that a guest could not eat and chocked up twice for too much spices in her beef enchiladas and could not eat but the 2 bites she tried to eat her plate. We returned them , but we were charged for the uneaten plate. I complained, if they knew they would charge us, I could have taken $10.00 meal and served to my dogs, but that option was not an option since they threw it away. I told them I considered it wrong that they could not guarantee we would be "satisfied customers" & it caused them a long time customer. P.S. Margaritas are sugared up with little alcohol if any. First, I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed this place before. I've been here several times and it's delicious. I guess I thought I had already done a review. I am lucky enough to be here in time for their lunch specials. Plenty of choices, all under $10. I got the number 2. A cheese enchilada, a taco, a tostada, cheese puff, guac, rice & beans. $9bucks, and it's pretty dang good. I can't tell you what was my favorite, because I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Well, to be honest, I didn't waste any room on the cheese puff, so I guess that doesn't count. If I did choose a favorite, it would be the taco. . the meat is very good seasoned ground beef, I loved it. I am not sure the taco shell is made in house, but it wasn't stale, so I was fine with it. I really liked the red enchilada sauce that was liberally poured on my cheese enchilada. There was no skimping on lunch portions either. I had to stop myself from eating everything, but I wanted to. Definitely make sure you have the green salsa. Both red and green are served with chips, and I like both, but love the green. The green sauce is served cold but it's a little on the spicy side. The red sauce is served hot, and I like that because it doesn't bring the temperature of the food down. I would suggest giving this little location a shot, they've been here for as long as I've lived in the area, but it needs some local love. It's small and has a nice atmosphere and the staff is great. I'm pretty sure I would give it five stars if I hadn't got uncomfortably warm while I was eating. The AC finally came on and helped, but the heat did irritate me in the beginning. Love this small, hidden Mexican restaurant. We've been going for many years since moving in the area. The people here are VERY nice and attentive. The prices are affordable and it's the perfect place for a quick bite to eat for lunch. We had a $6.99 jumbo margarita the last time we were there and it was soooo yummy. We also like ordering the combo plates. Everything is good here. However, it your typical Mexican restaurant. I would consider it more Tex Mex? Taco de Oro had all the indicators of a quality Tex-Mex hole-in-wall, but it alas, it fell short. Stale thick tortilla chips accompanied by a remarkably fresh, bright salsa with a mild kick. At least the chips and salsa kept coming, because the kitchen moves at a glacially slow place. It'd be one thing if meant the quality and presentation increased as a result, but it was ultimately disappointing. There was no evidence of slow-cooking on the barbacoa - fatty, chewy, poorly seasoned, and strongly gamey. The rice was a conundrum, both greasy and dried out with no noticeable flavor but the oil. The only star of the meal was the lamb soup, which had all the essence of lamb, but without the greasy chunks the barbacoa suffered from. A consommé-style with a bit of rice and chickpeas succeeded as an appetizer. However, a bit of lamb soup wouldn't draw me back in, even if I was in the area. read more

PLEASE READ THIS! THEY SERVE OLD FOOD AND HAVE BAD SERVICE! My grandparents and I got there right when they opened, so we were the only guests there. I have never been to a Mexican restaurant with service this bad. We ordered one consomé and two orders of barbacoa, and once our food came is when things started to get worse. The waitress brought two small consomés and then brought the big one we ordered. We nicely let her know that we didn't get the other two small consomés she brought over, she then explained that each order of barbacoa comes with consomé included. How do you forget to mention that? Specially when we asked her several times if she was sure that they didn't sell a smaller consomé. We asked her to please just take off the big consomé we had previously preferred. When she brought the barbacoa it looked good, but it didn't have any flavor and it tasted as if they had made it the day before. The handmade tortillas they served us also tasted kind of old, for something that was supposedly made when we ordered it. NOPE. We asked the waitress if they had made these from the day before and the young lady said "Oh yeah, we cook barbacoa and the tortillas every three days, because we don't want to waste food so we just heat it up and serve it." I am never coming back here and I will never recommend to anyone I know. I was VERY disappointed at how much this establishment left to be desired. There are some very good things here. Their fajita beef is delicious, chips are served warm and fresh with excellent salsa house-made green and red salsas, and the service is very friendly. The decor inside looks like a Mexican hole-in-the-wall - which for me is NOT a negative. They're usually some of the best places. But there were a few things we didn't like. First, the rice and beans that came with my wife's enchiladas were too salty. The restaurant apologized and charged the enchiladas a la carte so we weren't charged for the rice and beans, which was a great way to handle it. Also, my sopes - which were tasty and piled high with quality, fresh toppings - didn't have the right texture. The shells were more like flatbread, whereas a typical sope should have a crispy masa shell. Again, they tasted great and I enjoyed them...but they were more like a Taco Bell Gordita shell topped with delicious Mexican food. I wanted to like this place more, especially because of the friendliness of the staff. I'll probably give it another shot, but won't be ordering sopes. We'll see if the rice and beans are a bit less salty next time. read more

I haven't had anything I did not like, the Birria quesadillas were great, make sure you get the spicy salsa that goes with them, which is different than their regular salsas. I liked the red salsa lots more but voth green and read are tasty. My husband had corn tortillas and they too are handmade a real shocker for ur. Only reason for the deducted star is their sweet tea was horrible as in I took two tiny sips. Taste like extreme tap water with honey. Not pleasing at all. I was so hoping this could be our go-to Mexican food place. But I was really disappointed, so I'm still on the hunt. I must start off by saying that the service was awesome, those witnesses really know how to give great customer service. WARNING - food was Pappasitos priced, but not even close to Pappasitos good - I know this is a little hole in the wall, so I didn't really expect it to be chain-like, but we spent $60 for three people and that was without alchol, appetizers, or dessert. Not at all impressed by the food. In fact, everything just tasted slightly off. At first I thought it was just mine, but I tasted the two meals my family was eating because we all got different things, and theirs were off too. And I can't put my finger on what it was, but I barely got half way through my meal. Because of that, as I was waiting for the rest of my family to finish what they could, I naturally started looking around. Upon further investigation, this place is filthy and junky - way past "local dive". Almost all the booth seats were torn. The plastic decorations hanging from the ceiling, closest to the ceiling fans were covered in black dust and gunk, not to mention the ugliest chairs that weren't even close to matching the rest of the attempted fiesta-like interior They look like the were purchased at a banquet hall, going out business sale. Needless to say, if it looked this gross in the public dining room I can't even fathom what the kitchen could have been like. Yuck!! I really don't mean to be quite so brutal, but if I have to pay $60 for a party of 3 to eat, then I need to get my money's worth.
