BUT in this case the formerly great state has the best Mexican food in the US. Especially living in San Diego and frequently traveling to Mexico for weekend trips and Cabo for our honeymoon. We know Mexican food. This location is on the corner of SR 16 and the 1. You park on the back side of the restaurant. Luis is the owner. Only reason for lost star was items were not in our Togo order. Food was extremely tasteful! We ordered a California burrito and it was very large and the kiddo was very happy with it. Small issue was she had to go through the failed burrito filling style (sour cream river followed by chicken, and then the other stuff) but we corrected it and all was well. I ordered the chorizo chicken and it was very good. The chorizo laid nicely on the chicken and contributed to the good flavor of the beaten flat chicken. The beans and rice were very well seasoned and prepared. Everything combined was perfect and smartly done. Things forgotten with meal were the tortillas and avocado (Paid for the avocado not the tortilla). Wasn't worth driving 20 minutes back there to get it (this is more of a heads up if management is reading these reviews). Staff was very friendly when we checked in to get our meal. Online ordering system was pretty good, just make sure you are ordering from the right one. I found the restaurant from Yelp and used the website link to order. Would eat here again if I'm in town. This is the best Mexican food I've had since moving to Florida three years ago. Salsa and Queso were both good. I had the Americano taco which was also good. My house margarita was really good. Some places they are sour and this one was not. The staff was also very nice and food came out quickly. This will be my go to place when I want Mexican from now on. read more

First time here. We did takeout. The service was good. I had the Enchilada Suizas. I consider this dish, with beans and rice, as a bellwether. I'm sad to say that the chicken was dry and chewy at times. The tomatillo sauce was light. The rice was bland, the beans were decent. This didn't make me want to come back. The wife had the burrito supreme. She said it was pretty average. The red sauce was bland. Her assessment of the rice and beans was the same as mine. The salsa was very good. I met with friends for Cinco de Mayo, I wasn't that hungry, I just wanted a good chilli rellanoes, they did not have an appetizer of that, but the waitress, who was very good, did say I could just get the chili rellanoes, without rice and beans, I asked her again and she said that would be fine they could do that. The price as a dinner was 17.95, which is quite pricey for rice and beans with one chili. So when it was presented, in a sauce with one chili I was pleased although it wasn't the typical chili rellanoes I was used to. Only one chili? Then the bill came, I was charged 17.95. I asked the waitress to take it off and she had to check with the manager, the manager came over and refused to alter the bill he was quite rude, and arrogant I only had 1 chili rellanoes for 17.95? He refused to alter the bill. No apology, nothing. Just rude one chili, a little cheese, a little sauce, 17.95? They will never get my business again, and I will tell my friends. Great Mexican food. Their drinks were quite tasty. You may miss this place as it's on the south end of at Augustine beach. There was a previous Mexican restaurants at this location but this one is quite different and good. You can order as little or as much as you desire to eat. A nice place for lunch while visiting friends in the St. Augustine area. Friendly staff, large menu, and a fun environment. I ordered two tacos, Sriracha Shrimp, which were deep fried southern jumbo shrimp, tossed in our sriracha buffalo sauce, and topped with cabbage. They were both very good. D had the enchiladas and he said they were great. The restaurant decor was very cool to look at with all the different paintings of the Lucha Libre wrestlers. They even have actual masks on display behind the bar, which I noticed someone was trying on. Taco Libre is part of a strip mall with a huge Publix grocery story. Parking was easy but it was busy, and you had to watch out for all the cars coming in all directions. I'm glad we stopped on our way to downtown St. Augustine. read more

If you want tacos, there a much better options in St Augustine. The tacos were just kind of OK. My wife ordered the new Gabernador taco. This taco came with shrimp, cheese, onions and bell peppers. The shrimp, if that is what you can call them, were tiny little pieces of something that were over cooked and crunchy. The shrimp on is taco looked so artificial and tasted awful (nothing like the shrimp in my tacos). Way too much cheese. I had the sriracha buffalo chicken and surf & turf tacos. There was so much creme sauce on the tacos you could not taste anything else, including the the spice from the sriracha. read more

As far as a sit down Mexican restaurant goes, this one is pretty good. By far the best thing about this place is the staff as they are always super friendly. The food isn't bad, but it's not as good as the Casa Maria that was in this spot, even though we noticed that some of the same people work here. My husband had a pork burrito and I had the garlic shrimp and fish. While my shrimp and fish were good, it didn't taste like there was any garlic in the dish, rather that the fish and shrimp were just grilled. Overall this isn't a bad spot just not my favorite anymore. Would we visit again? Sure. The service is definitely what kept us going back. That and it's a rare Mexican restaurant where I can find Jamaica (hibiscus flower water) on the menu. read more

My husband and I found Taco Libre on Yelp and were so excited to give it a try. The menu is extensive, with so many options that sound flavorful and original! We spent probably twenty minutes trying to decide what to get and landed on the Fajita Burrito and Pastor Burrito. We opted to order online and pick up our order. The online ordering process was simple and intuitive. I was happy to see the easy customization options for each item. You can select how much of each ingredient you'd like (light, extra, or on the side), and an area for special instructions. I selected "on the side" for the sour cream in the Fajita Burrito and note "extra spicy, please!" for both. We received a confirmation of our order and were told to pick up in 30-40 minutes. At pickup, my husband was very impressed with the interior of the restaurant. Great vibe, clean, and had a great bar scene. The staff at the door was very friendly and had our order ready to go! When we got back to our hotel, we couldn't wait to dig in! The food was served in two styrofoam containers that were wrapped in Saran Wrap. It also came with a bag of chips and a side of salsa (which was not mentioned on the menu, but a pleasant surprise!). Up until this point, we were really happy with our experience... but then it went bad. When we opened the Pastor Burrito, it was so poorly wrapped that both ends were open. The Fajita Burrito was a little better, but not by much. I noticed there was no side of sour cream, though it was noted on the receipt attached to the bag. I ***hate*** sour cream, so I wasn't disappointed to not have it... I was worried that it meant it was inside my burrito... and I was right. I cut open the Fajita Burrito and was immediately taken aback by the very strong "fishy" smell. There is shrimp in the burrito, but shrimp shouldn't smell like this smelt. It was overpowering. I also immediately noticed the globs of sour cream running through the center of the burrito as well. Great. Both burritos were mainly filled with rice and hardly any other ingredients. So. Much. Rice. The rice was over cooked and had no flavor. We actually felt that neither burrito had flavor at all. No cilantro, no lime, no heat, no salt, no spices... there was just nothing going on. Not in the rice, not in the protein, or the sauces. It was awful. The meats in the burritos were sparse, very tiny, not of good quality (grizzly steak), and not seasoned at all. The sauce on both burritos had no flavor, either, even with salt and pepper added. Both of our burritos were of very poor quality, were improperly prepared, had no flavor at all, and had sorely disproportionate fillings (I guess because rice is cheap!). It was such a huge disappointment. Especially for a meal that cost us $30... for two burritos. If we had eaten in the restaurant, we would have requested a refund and walked out. They get one star because of the service and the salsa was edible. That's about it. If you want great Mexican, go to Burrito Works Taco Shop on A1A. They're doing it right, cutting NO corners, preparing every meal with so much care, and their customer service is off the charts. If you want to drink and not care what you're eating, then Taco Libre is probably fine for you. read more

Excellent food, it's very delicious. It's hard this days to find authentic Mexican dishes. We ordered the Corn street, it was very flavorful and with the right ingredients. The chimichanga that My hubby ordered was really good, but he didn't noticed that it came with ref sauce. Besides that he said it was really good. I ordered the pork bowl and let me tell you, I loved it! They also have a drink called Saint Augustine blue, my goodness it was so nice and well prepared. Visited this place a little over two months ago. Now, me personally, I'm not big on Mexican food except tacos. But this place has changed my mind. I got the Pastor Burrito and it was absolutely delicious. The portions on the burritos are huge! And of course, you get the chips and salsa. My mother in law suggested this place since they had been there on a previous trip multiple times. They did not disappoint! Kind of weird location at the end of the strip mall, but I kept an open mind. When I walked inside it was a very bright, hip atmosphere going along with a luchador motif. They stated us with warm chips and salsa, as most Mexican restaurants do. The chips were the perfect weight and saltiness. Great salsa, not too mild not too spicy. I am in Florida on the beach, so I'm looking to eat the freshest seafood I can. My mother in law doesn't eat anything that swims and the rest of my family can take or leave seafood. Ihad the ceviche taco, pescado taco, and camaron taco. All were amazing and so fresh! They coleslaw and sauces they use add so much to accentuate the natural flavors of the shrimp and fish. My husband ordered his usual carne asada taco plate. He loved it. We were also dining with our children. Our 7 year old is in chicken tender and cheeseburger phase. He ordered the chicken tenders and fries. We were shocked at the generous portion and also the quality of the food. We didn't expect such an A+ kids menu item, but here we are! It had a faint smell of food cooking in the background that was overpowered by a floor that was cleaned with a sour mop. We have loved everything we have tried, the several times we have been here. Our friends brought the Taco Libre Dip and Chips as an appetizer to a party and we've also had the Fajita Taco Salad delivered to our home by Grub Hub. It is a good sized serving of marinated grilled chicken with bell peppers and onions, with lettuce, refried beans, toped with shredded cheese. It arrived warm and fresh and not the least bit soggy. I recommend the chimichanga plate which is served with a side of rice and retried beans. Or, if you prefer a smaller portion, order a tostada or shredded chicken taco.
