Since we had heavy meals for a few days, we were looking for something on the lighter side and street tacos seemed to fit the bill as did this place. Hubs and I both got the three taco platter with a chorizo taco, an Al pastor taco, and a ground beef one. We got all of them with onions and cilantro with some lime and corn tortillas. The platters came with rice and beans and they give you a basket of chips and salsa. All three tacos were excellent! They were flavorful, meaty, and NOT greasy. They have a variety of salsas and they were all tasty. The rice was tender with a wonderful consistency however it was a bit bland as were the refried beans. They both needed a bit more salt or cumin. I cook my "Mexican" rice with chicken broth and add a little bit of salsa to my beans. I added some of their salsa to both and it livened it up. This is my girlfriend's favorite restaurant, and I now see why. The food is great, so last weekend we were in the city for a wedding and got a late night snack two days in a row. The second night, we ran into the owner, Nick, with Jonathan aka "Food God." As we waited for our food, Nick invited us over to exchange hellos with their table. This was an overall pleasant experience in the River North area of Chicago. My friend and I were in town for a library conference, and we wanted some Mexican food in a sit-downy restaurant that also wouldn't break the bank. After scrolling through a few places on Yelp, we ended up settling on Taco Maya, which was only about a 5 minute walk from our hotel. The interior of the restaurant feels like a Chipotle décor-wise--it was white, sleek, and had a semi-industrial feel to it, with gleaming metal appliances visible. Unlike Chipotle, you don't watch them make your food as you order, and you instead order at the counter and then sit down to wait while they make the food behind the counterspace in a little kitchen. It's still visible inside the restaurant, but it's more tucked away, and a busser brings it out to you when it's ready. I ended up getting a few different tacos (ground beef 'Mexican style' with grilled onions, cilantro, and lime; a Yucatan taco, which included shrimp, house seasoning, chorizo, melted cheese, and cilantro), a side of rice, and an empanada (chicken tinga-style). The tacos and the rice were delicious--both the ground beef and Yucatan tacos were the perfect size, about your normal 'street taco' size, and they were full of flavor. While the ground beef taco might sound boring, it was seasoned perfectly, and it also had the perfect amount of food inside it, with nothing slipping out the end when I ate it due to overstuffing. And, the chorizo mixing with the shrimp in the Yucatan taco was a kind of flavor I had never experienced before, but they mixed perfectly, and the cilantro created a nice, bright flavor as well. The rice wasn't what I would call traditional Mexican rice, but it was still extremely tasty--it was orange and full-bodied, and it contained peas, carrot chunks, and corn. It seemed almost more like seasoned and dyed white rice, but it was still excellent nonetheless. The empanada was a different story, but that might be my fault. The chicken and seasoning tasted great, but there wasn't a ton of it. Instead, melted cheese made up a lot of the interior of the empanada, and the shell itself was a little thick. But, if you like tons of cheese in your food, as I oftentimes do not (I know, I'm from Wisconsin and I'm not a huge cheese fan, it's blasphemy), I think you would love it. While the meat was a little light, the flavors overall meshed very well. If you're looking for 'authentic' Mexican food, I would go elsewhere. However, if you're looking for Mexican food that includes fusions from other culinary styles, especially that in the Indian category (they had several curry-based tacos and fajitas), this is the place to go. This is part of a chain from what I've read, and it's definitely a great one if they all serve food this tasty! read more

I went to Taco Maya yesterday and had an extremely disappointing experience. The taco corn tortillas I ordered were covered in mold, rendering them inedible. I ate one taco which looked fine but then when I took a closer look at my other taco it clearly had mold. The staff showed indifference when I called they just gave us a refund when I brought this to their attention. I would not recommend this restaurant due to the unsatisfactory food quality. These folks could run a master class on customer service. Every time I come in, they're sure to greet me, make sure I have a menu, and are helpful to answer any question I may have. They're quick to prepare and deliver my order, and are keen to mention that I take advantage of their free salsa bar. They even do the little things right, like how the bags they use for their takeout are super high quality. Oh by the way, the food is delicious. There are so many options and I love that their tacos can be prepared "Mexican" or "American" style to one's liking. They have some outside the box tacos that are also very much worth trying.
