A few weeks ago, my favorite taco truck had a couple cases of "bad salsa" days. Since then, I've been on a quest to find a new favorite. "Look no more," I thought to myself as I bit into one of Taco More's Cabeza. Their tacos were flawless. I couldn't have asked for a better place to get my taco fix at. What makes this place better you ask? 1. they accept cards, with a $5 minimum (easily done if you order at least 3 tacos) 2. BIG menu, lots of things to look at 3. self-serve salsa bar with very spicy salsa :). The best thing about this is, when I'm ordering to go, I don't have to shamefully ask for a couple more salsa cups, I can just get it myself. 4. I waited for about five minutes to get my tacos! This is amazing compared to the 20-30 minutes I'm used to waiting at my ex-favorite joint. 5. They give you the choice of corn or flour tortilla. 6. Outside and inside seating. 7. very generously filled tacos! And their meat chunks are juicier too. I ordered the Cabeza, Cabrito, and Lenguas, for a total of $6.50. I don't recommend the Cabrito as much but the other two were cooked just perfectly. All in all, I cannot wait to return! read more

I ordered the soft beef steak birria taco plate and menudo. Get home and there was only 2 of the smallest tacos with a pinch of chz and some hard dry meat. THEN...THEN I open my menudo and sitting right on top was a piece of hair!! Lost my appetite QUICK and threw it away! Never again!! I went here for an impromptu lunch at work today and it was overall very good. I decided to sit down since their were some empty tables inside and the food came out within 5 minutes or less. The detached patio had a much nicer vibe so if I were meeting friends and having drinks i would definitely want to eat out there. I might have been the only person in a pretty busy page that wasn't Mexican so I always take that as a good sign. I had a potato egg and bean breakfast taco and the tortilla was the best part for sure. Soft warm and floury. I also ordered a soup with shredded meat and chickpeas I'm a light broth. It had a much more complex and unique flavor than the taco contents. The salsa came warm and was good but not my favorite salsa ever or anything. Came out to only $6.50 which I think was a great deal. Next time I would want to try some of their different salsas and condiments from the salsa bar that felt more like it was for to go orders to me. The waitress was nice and attentive but I saw the guy next to me pay at the table but then she didn't bring me the check. I eventually got up and paid at the cashier and figured he was the exception. I was impressed with their cleanliness efforts (consistently swept floors and washed windows) and that they had a hand washing sink outside of the restrooms for staff and customers alike. One of the outposts of this local chain that boasts quite a superior selection of tacos with some unusual and excellent ones like goat, which is a beautifully toothsome and earthy meat, the soups are excellent and the seafood soup is perfect with a headily savory broth with a nice mix of seafood that is perfect with a touch of cilantro and diced onion. Another really great street taco place. Life is good here. 2 dollar tacos, extensive salsa bar and large menu. There are already tons of review on this place so I'll keep to the highlights of my order. Order: Goat-good, nothing unique indicated it was goat Cabeza-excellent! Greasy and generous Lengua-just ok, I thought it had a strange taste. I've had this at many other places and maybe the meat wasn't super fresh here? Can't say for sure. Watermelon Agua Fresca - Awesome! refreshing and perfect sweetness. For $2 a taco, on average, I thought they were larger than other places. Taco More does have a few things I haven't seen in other taco places like goat. The salsa bar was extensive. I really like the grilled jalapeño but wasn't a huge fan of any of the other salsas. 5 stars because the food and drinks were good and the prices were cheap. We stopped by here right before they closed but said it was fine to order food. I had the Posole soup and it was the best I have ever had. I have tried Posole in a lot of places and this is by far the best. It had the right amount of spice, big chunks of meat, and the perfect texture. We also had several different types of the tacos and all of them were worth getting. My favorite was the carnitas. Wow! I came here upon my fellow yelpers advice and ZOMG, it was amazing. All I had were the tacos but I was instantly brought back to Mexico. My favorites were the carnitas and the cabrito. The flavors were absolutely exquisite, with hints of fresh cilantro and onion. The salsas were also incredible. The pastor was very disappointing. I thought they were going to be from the "trompo" which they were not. The tacos de bistek were also somewhat of a let down with the fatty parts. The cute little Mexican waitress brought me out a basket of chips with salsa, the salsa was this super tasty chipotle spiced sauce with lots of onion and garlic, perfectly seasoned and just enough spice to make you sweat a little. I love salsa verde and I tried all three they had at the salsa bar. The first one was an avocado based one that needed just a tad more salt to be perfect. The next one was a tomatillo based salsa with what tasted like serranos supplying the heat (my fave) and the last one was this chunky almost chimichurri style salsa that was just ok. I came back for lunch with my family. This time I the shrimp tostada and shared a half beef steak torta. The shrimp tostada was good. I was expecting the shrimp to be grilled, but it's served cold and mixed with pico. The torta bread was nice and toasted. Crunch on every bite. The beef steak was very tasty and seasoned. Solid. I came on my way to the airport after a business trip to get a few breakfast tacos after finding on yelp. Great choice. The menu is intimidating, the building might leave a bit to be desired, but it's great food and the staff seems to care. There's a salsa/condiment bar where you help yourself and I wish I could tell you what all was on it, but I have no idea. The almost creamy green sauce was my favorite. A little heat, a little cool, a lot of yummy. The red sauce scorched my nostrils when I took a whiff so I stayed away before getting on a flight. SMART CHOICE, AMIRIGHT? I ended up with a chorizo/potato, bean/cheese, and egg/bacon soft taco, took them to the airport, and ate them outside of the security gate before going to my terminal. Fast and cheap, I have no complaints about Taco More (actually just one). I ordered 3 tacos, which were $2.50 each. The fact that these cost 50 cents more than the tacos from El Tacorrido down the street almost turned me off from the establishment. This dissatisfaction quickly dissipated, however. I was craving some ceviche and this spot nailed it! My boyfriend and I went in, not expecting much in the way of authenticity. We've grown accustomed to getting an Austin taco, the type filled with everything except the authentic Mexican ingredients and labeled as a taco. But this place, my goodness, so good! I'm not too sure what all the hype is about. I ordered a pork skin taco along with a goat and beef steak taco and I wasn't impressed with them at all. Each item was bland including the salsas that it came with. I also tried the goat soup which also lacked of flavor however it wasn't bad after I added a squeeze of lime and some green salsa. No american cheese nor lettuce on tacos (unless the traditional dish calls for it). Price is reasonable, I like the fact that any waitress can serve you. I have been going to this place since 2006. Taco More is super. It's a meaty and true Mexican place, and they misspelled "tongue" on the menu, like three times. We head up there for breakfast, immediately were sat and brought water, chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy, but not crazy hot. Salsa bar, hello! Several different kinds of salsa, veggies, roasted jalapeños, and more. All the salsas were great. I love salsa. Salsa loves me. We look over the menu, and it's not very veggie friendly, but I have a theory that if you get a creative enough, non-whiny vegan with you, you can take her anywhere. I order a potato and cactus taco. I put onions and jalapeños from the salsa bar on it, and it was a fantastic, filling, vegan taco. It was also a buck fifty. I'm a cheap date. Meat Eater eats a lot of meat usually, but he went on the low carb diet, and now ONLY eats meat. So he asks about meat plates, but they come with carby sides like rice and beans. He decides to go with a pound of goat. Yes, I ate a vegan vegetable filled taco, and he ate a pound of goat. I watched as he ate it all. It came with a dozen tortillas (no really, 12 of them), a salad, onions, cilantro. He said it was great, and ordered a pound of al pastor to go (another dozen tortillas...). He tried the al pastor and said it was delicious, too. It began to get really packed when we were leaving, so I think early is better. It was cheap (pound of meat with salad and 12 tortillas is $14.) One year ago, I fell in love during a roadtrip to Monterrey. Everyone said we were crazy to vacation in northern Mexico in the dead of winter, but my boy and I kept warm by wearing three layers of pants each, holding one another close, and scarfing countless hot, fresh, greasy tacos from curbside stands. We returned to Texas with warmth in our hearts and cholesterol in our arteries--and a newfound quest to find cheap, delicious tacos just like the ones in Monterrey. Our search ended when we found Taco More. It's always a good sign when no one on the waitstaff speaks English, and in over ten trips, I've never spotted another gringo there. Austin has lots of great hipster taco joints - Tacodeli, El Chillito - and while I appreciate those, I always leave thinking, "I could've gotten something cheaper and better at Taco More." Try the al pastor, bistek, or pollo--or why not all three? They're only $1.50 each. Y con tortillas de maiz y un Jarrito de mandarina, por favor. Swoon over the splendid salsa and condiment bar, replete with fresh limes, cucumbers, onions, cilantro and salsas in five colors. This spot is a neighborhood mecca. I like that about Taco More. Several folks were there in pajama bottoms. I think this should be a Saturday morning rule wherever you go. It gets packed on the weekends and you can tell that the regulars love being together here. The salsa bar is not as impressive, IMHO, as some suggest, but it had several items I liked, such as onions, escabeche and limes. I was disappointed in the tiny $1.75 breakfast taco I ordered of egg, beans, cheese and avocado. (Taquaria Arandinas' are much fatter at only $.99 before 11am). Thankfully, it came with two corn tortillas so I stretched the small serving into two tacos. The creamy green spicy sauce is delicious but could be spicier. After consuming my tiny taco, I developed order envy watching the guy next to us eat a giant chili relleno plate. Service is attentive and in Spanish. I like that, too. I first visited Taco More last year, stoked by positive Yelp reviews. Two stars and several paragraphs later I went on record with a dissenting opinion. A few months after that I read a glowing writeup in The Fearless Critic guide and my first reaction was to make that little masturbating toss gesture (I realize it's a creepy thing to do when you're alone in Barnes and Noble, but c'mon). Finally, this week I pick up a copy of The Austin Chronicle to find another food writer with a total boner for this place. Jesus. I did what any other self-important tool would do and went back to Taco More for lunch today. Call me Don Quixote all you want, but I'm right and they're all wrong. The place is friendly, authentic and seems to make just about everything in-house. But to take that and skip past the average food to a stellar rating is a conflation I just can't abide by. Keeping with the Freudian theme of the first paragraph, I might call it "confllatio." I'll grant my last review was a little harsh and I'm upgrading from two to three stars, but that's being more than reasonable. Here's the rundown of today's tacos: Carnitas: My favorite of today's bunch, actually pretty good for a cheap taco but nothing to write home (or a Yelp review) about. Austin Chronicle guy thinks they're some of the best in town. Try Curra's or Sazón for better specimens to start, and I'm sure you'll find no shortage of suggestions for carnitas to top those. Cabeza (AKA barbacoa): Meh... about average for a cheap barbacoa taco. I know the innuendo's probably getting old at this point but this taco could have used a fluffer: the shredded meat was packed in a particularly dense little wad. Pastor: Flavor profile was okay but very dry, and the chunks of meat ranged from BB-sized to raisin-sized. Thumbs down. Few places do a really good al pastor and this isn't one of them. Don't go looking for evidence of pineapple here, either. Cabrito: I could tell it was goat meat... wow. I kept the bottom of the taco aimed in one spot to help consolidate the grease puddle... okay, so that's not exactly a valid criticism of a cheap, authentic taco but hey, it's not a pretty picture or a glowing endorsement, either, is it? The salsa and condiment bar is expansive and intriguing, but let's not kid ourselves, it's more a feast for the eyes than the taste buds: Ooo... this one's really hot! Ooo... this one's really hot in a different way that ceases to matter once you've started sweating after the second drop or actually put it on a taco. Ooo... this one looks pretty but doesn't taste like much. You can come away thinking Goldilocks had it easy finding the right bowl of porridge. Alright, maybe I'm getting carried away again... let me reel it back in... There really is nothing wrong with this place except for the inordinate gringo love heaped on it. That's not Taco More's fault, after all. I admit I want to go back to try a campechana or some of the other extensive offerings that go far beyond tacos. I don't see a five-star update in the future, but, now, that would be a silly reason to write off a perfectly decent, cheap and authentic Mexican food joint, wouldn't it? read more

Love this place. I'm a California native and I grew up eating a lot of Mexican food. This place is very authentic and it reminds me of the Mexican food from my childhood. This place is so authentic I get stares from other guests wondering if I'm lost. I even had one guy say with broken English that he doesn't see many of my kind here (I'm pretty sure he thought I was Chinese). He didn't mean any harm and looked genuinely surprised to see a chino in the restaurant. No senor, I'm not lost, I'm just here for the tacos eh. Do yourself a favor and bring someone that speaks Spanish with you. Otherwise, you may end up with a "pig face" taco like I did. I ordered a steak Torta as a backup, and that was quite good.
