Stopped in to order a quick lunch bite to go after reading a review in a local paper. Since I rarely believe anything I read in these local rags that are trying to land future ad placements by never saying anything negative about ANY place they review I was prepared for mediocre food a drab decor. Instead what I found was a pleasantly bright and lively, albeit tiny, seating area and a very legible menu hand written on a blackboard. The decor is colorful without being offensive and I look forward to squeezing in here for a quick dinner in the future. Compared to the other new Mexican place nearby in Glenview (El Mexican - see my review) this place is comfortable, inviting and homey. It has a way WORSE location than El Mexican as it is tucked into a small strip of retail stores one block south of Willow Road just east of Happ with no real "drive-by" traffic. Even with that they were quite busy at lunch time. We ordered a Pork Al Pastor and a Adobo Skirt Steak. Both were fantastic. The pork was tender with a good hit of chile de arbol in the marinade and a very noticeable pineapple taste as it should have. Some folks might find it too sweet - we thought it was perfectly seasoned - no salt needed. The fried fresh jalapenos added a nice flavor without being too hot. The skirt steak had great flavor with a red adobo marinade - maybe chili de arbol again but it tasted very different from the pastor. It had a nice addition of a slice of avocado. Both tacos were seasoned with cilantro and onions and were served on tender and flavorful corn tortillas. We look forward to returning to try the guacamole, duck mole, vegetarian and sea of Cortz tacos. My bet is that this place will survive via word of mouth and their very good branding. read more

RIP OFF!! How can you charge $4.25 for one steak taco? Meat was chewy and low quality. Guacamole was very bland. I spent $40 on 6 tacos and an order of Guacamole. NEVER AGAIN. Walked in tonight for the first time hoping this would be our go-to Mexican joint. We ordered 8 different tacos. I kid you not, 45 minutes later I urged my husband to go ask about us because every single person who ordered behind us had eaten and left already. He brought up our number, they shouted it back, and 5 minutes later we had our food. We didn't receive any apology or acknowledgement that they clearly had missed our order (#37 in case anyone from the restaurant wants to apologize to a patron). I literally ended up tossing the ticket back up on the counter as we left, and me in tears. This was the worst $30 spent after an already horrible experience (and personal week). We didn't like ANY of our tacos. The shells completely fell apart and every meat was missing actual flavor. I don't even think they put salt and pepper on the steak. After tonight I am truly disappointed in this business from not only a customer service standpoint but as well as quality of food. This was plain gross and I can't wrap my head around how they are so crazy busy and have 4 stars. This is a great place for really delicious gourmet tacos. If you haven't been here before and are in the area you should really check it out! I tried three of their tacos, the carne asada, the blackened fish, and the barbacoa, all of which were delicious! You know this is a great place to eat when people from Winnetka travel ALL THE WAY to Northfield. But seriously this place is awesome. The tacos are $3-$4/each and most adults probably need 3 to feel full. The best tacos are the Blackened Sea of Cortez fish tacos. Seriously some of the best fish tacos around. The horchata isn't the best I've had. It needs more cinnamon or something. In the summertime there is outdoor seating but in the winter it can get a bit crowded because it's so popular. read more

Food: good Service: counter style (good, limited interaction) This is a very small spot, limited seating, but good to meet a friend or have a low-key dinner out. I also saw several people get carry out. I found the tacos to be a little expensive for the area, but they were good and fairly big in size! We got one of almost all on the menu and enjoyed them all. My husband and I took the day off on my birthday to ride the North Branch bike trail and as I was looking for places to stop and eat close to the trail, I saw this place and we decided to give it a go. I am SO glad we did! I got an amazing meal, margaritas and cake! We live on the North side of Chicago and will drive here now sometimes when we get a craving. It's THAT good. Everything tastes so fresh and of such good quality. This is not a place with 50 things on the menu. Their menu is small allowing them to focus on the quality of the food and what they do, they do it outstandingly. They have about 6 or 7 tacos and they will do a special of the week taco for a new flavor. I typically go for the Sea of Cortez. You can get that beer-battered(my fav) or blackened. Whatever sauce they put on that is amazing. I also will either get the special or the adobo skirt steak taco and my husband and I will share sides of the rice and beans. 2 tacos each and 2 sides usually fills us up. You can get margaritas here and they also have a few varieties of beer, but I'm a horchata kind of girl so I usually get that. At the end of our meal, I have an inner-war with myself about ordering a piece of tres leches to go and the side with the devil usually wins out because it's too good to pass up! The inside is really small so it's typical to have to wait for a seat and it's not unusual for someone's butt to be in your meal as they try and squeeze in or out of the table next to you but now that the weather is warmer, they have some outside seating which is nice. I definitely recommend this place and especially if you are riding the North Branch and need to fuel-up. read more

The place is kind of small, but when you walk in, it is decorated in a neon pink and it's super eye-catching. The menu is relatively small and although we haven't tried everything there yet, they definitely follow the "quality over quantity" rule. We have enjoyed Taco Nano for years - especially their Sea of Cortez and guacamole. We have found, however, that they are not good at checking their carryout orders and when they make a mistake (and you have to go back to get the item that is missed) they do not do anything to compensate you and are not really apologetic. We have also found that their guacamole is quite inconsistent in how it is made. I am hoping that they will work on their attention to detail. read more

I went here slightly cynical, as I always do, to restaurants to which I received recommendations from my friends. I was very pleasantly surprised. I ordered, essentially, a sampler, trying the Old El Paso taco, the Al Pastor, the Skirt Steak Adobo, and the Sea of Cortez tacos, as well as the guacamole. The guacamole was excellent, extremely fresh, and came with more than enough tortilla chips. I do think that the price point was a little bit high, but that's a minor nitpick. For the tacos, my favorite by far was the Al Pastor - you get a lot of meat, and it's crispy and delicious. There were a few oddities, though. The menu said that it came with pineapple and jalapenos - there were no jalapenos on my taco, and I found the pineapple to be an unwelcome addition. That is a matter of taste, though. I experienced the Adobo taco to be a little dry, and kind of bland - in my opinion, the weakest of the bunch. The runner up was the fish taco. I had mine battered, and I just remember all the flavors and textures blending together wonderfully. It would be my top choice, were it not for my personal affection for Al Pastor. As for the Old El Paso taco, it was very much a southwest sort of deal with ground beef and shredded cheese, etc - your average Tex-Mex sort of taco. I found it to be very average. Overall, Taco Nano is well-priced, the quality is good, and several items I tried really shined. If I'm in the area, I will certainly go again. read more

Service was quick. Got our food in less than 10 minutes, but we also ordered a margarita and that didn't come until we reminded them that we ordered one. The chicken, birria, and steak taco were flavorful. But the barbacoa and carnitas had too many toppings that didn't taste well together. The tortilla fell apart after 2 bites because they only serve it with one vs two like other taco places. But overall, pretty good. Would go again to try their burritos and desserts. read more

I hate to write this, but my daughter and I were so disappointed. We went to share a burrito (9$--no meat), and what came out was a tiny, dry small tortilla with rice and some dry beans +lettuce and sour cream. It was actually tough to get down! We were on a bike ride and starving, so we ate it anyway. The cashier was downright rude and wouldn't even look us in the eye. My husband met us as we were finishing and he wanted to order--told him it was not good and not worth the money, so we went elsewhere. I have been eating their tacos al pastor in particular for several years. When they started they were fabulous! I am Mexican and know my "al pastor". Today was my first time back in since Covid. The tacos were awful, very little meat, it was almost a vegetarian taco with too large a slice of pineapple and a fried serrano, and three scant pieces of meat. The service was dreadful, they got the bill wrong twice. We were eating outside at a table that was 5 feet from shade and they wouldn't move the table into the shade, we were the only diners outside. For superior tacos al pastor its worth driving to Taco Vida on Lake Cook Road, I believe he is the chef who started Nano. Anyway he has the flavor right and the service is first class, for the moment he is pickup only but its worth it. read more

Supremely superior taqueria. With the same chef as the adjacent Happ Inn, I knew I was probably going to love it even before I stepped in. It's a small place, with just a few small tables and a long communal one, so it's more suited for carry-out. Tacos are made to order, using fresh, organic ingredients. There's quite an array of tasty options from which to choose: duck, beer-battered or blackened tilapia, crispy shrimp, skirt steak, al pastor, chicken--there's even a ground turkey version. Vegetarians aren't forgotten about either; there's a taco with crispy potatoes, poblano rajas, and portabella mushroom. We tried four different ones and they were all fantastic. The al pastor had big chunks of charred, juicy pineapple that I could smell even before unwrapping it. The skirt steak had an added bonus of sliced creamy avocado. So, so good. I also got an order of guacamole, which was available in three levels of heat (genius idea). The medium level of spice was perfect. The texture was sublime; no pureed baby food here. Large chunks of avocado, with just enough tomato, onion, jalapeno and cilantro for balance. The accompanying chips were salted just enough and appropriately sturdy to hold up to the guac. Good selection of sides and desserts (fried plantains, rice and beans, tres leches cake, and flan), and there's even margaritas! Another detail of note: all the tacos are labeled, so there's no pesky unwrapping of everything trying to figure out what's what. That alone makes me a fan. Good job, Taco Nano! read more

My second time to Taco Nano was great! The first time I had their food, I had takeout and by the time I got it home, it was cold, so I had to microwave everything. Trendy taco joint with good food, all served in disposable paper boats. The Guac hits the spot. I specified medium heat for the ready to order guacamole. You can also have it made mild or spicy. Friendly service. The cashier suggested I get the Crispy Camarones (Shrimp) Taco. I also ordered the Pork Al Pastor Taco. I also tried a bite of my girlfriend's Adobo Skirt Steak Taco and I happened to like the Steak the best! I didn't love the taste of their chips and their tortillas. The ingredients on the tacos and the guac were superb, but I happen to prefer different chips and tortillas. I've even had better store bought tortilla chips. I also had their margarita, a necessity for Mexican food! It was good, but I have definitely had better. The restaurant is quite small with limited seating, but normal for a taco joint. So many good Taco places in the north shore, its becoming difficult to rank my top picks. The physical location is on the smaller side, but the interior is nicely decorated, vibrant, and clean. I enjoyed simplified menu and freshly made tacos. Tacos are between 3-6 dollars and sides are all individually priced. Making this a taco haven otherwise don't bother here if your craving some other traditional Mexican dishes. Steak and Chicken tacos tasted authethically made, seasoned well, and were served fresh and hot. The rice was on the disappointing side, a bit dry and not seasoned as much. Their horchata was pre-made and lacked cinnamon flavoring. Overall, impressed with the location, fast service, and appetizing tacos. Wouldn't mind stopping by if i was in the area again. read more
