Food: Good, but not great. Being from Southern California I have high expectations for Mexican food. This place had so much hype for over two years and the food was mediocre. The flavor was lacking, even with the roja salsa I was not excited about it. We got the asada fries, the fries seemed like they were frozen and fried there. The guacamole was piped on and not a pile so I was a little taken aback and they did not strain the beans before throwing them on the fries so they were so soggy. The queso was no where to be found and the asada had no flavor at all. Tacos: we got three of the speciality chicken tacos. All mid. I don't even know how to explain them, no flavor. Got two with corn tortillas and one with flour that was supposed to be the best. The standard burrito was small and no standout flavor. Seeing the stack of flour tortillas in a bag was a turnoff and they were out of churros. Service: The front of house were really nice. We were there around 6:15 on a Friday night and they were slammed. You could tell they are still working out kinks. The guy next to me had a missing part of his drink, they left hot food sitting out on the pass for longer than I would have liked, and prioritized the newer food over the ones that had been sitting there. It seemed they were busy making drinks over running food. The back of house was absolutely crushing it. I do think they actually had to the servers to hurry up a bit. It's cute, but pretty small. We had to sit at the bar and they had multiple tables waiting in the doorway because there were not enough tables. I do think it is solidly busy and some of the hype will die down once people have been here. I want this place to succeed and wish it all of the best. We want to support vegan places and Mexican food. However, with all of the lead up I was disappointed with the lack of flavor in all of the dishes we tried. We went to Church Hill and got a first taste of the brand new Taco Vegana! The space is colorful with a beautiful mural. Nice full bar area as well. And get this, y'all: this is Richmond's FIRST 100% vegan Mexican cantina! The owners are cool people and Milton is really passionate about creating authentic Mexican cuisine that is true to his heritage. We had al pastor, veggie, and el güero tacos, saucy enchiladas, and the soyrizo and asada fries. The flavor was on point. They have an amazing selection of creative cocktails and refreshing mocktails, so there is definitely something for everyone. But the two things that absolutely STOLE THE SHOW were this vegana horchata cocktail and the tres leches. I'm not kidding, it was perfection. This place is a vibe. Great layout, lots of window view, comfortable bar seating, fun decor, hip staff, FANTASTIC menu of ALL VEGAN street tacos, Mexican fare, drinks and desserts. The space isn't enormous but the windows & high ceilings help it feel more so. We loved our server and the other staff who checked in with us throughout our date. It was exciting to be in an all vegan restaurant where everything on the menu is safe for compassionate people to order. We started with loaded nachos. My husband and I both got the "taco plate" entree which is a combination of any three tacos you want, plus refried beans and rice. We are so excited to welcome another 100% vegan restaurant to the Richmond/Churchill area! This bar/taqueria is very busy and for good reason - the decorations were so well done, there are 3 TVs by the bar to watch the games, and there's something magically charming about the open kitchen where you can see the chefs working behind the scenes. Once seated, we ordered the burrito bowl and not-a-Cali burrito - talk about flavor, this meal was on point! Portion sizes are also healthy, so you won't need to roll out the restaurant afterward. I want to start off by pointing out that we went in their second week of operations. The place is a little tight but we were still able to get a table for dinner. Now with that being said, we were not feeling it. Our server was nice but knew nothing about the menu. We ordered the guac to start and that was good because there were no onions you had to crunch down on and it was seasoned/flavored appropriately to our liking. I ordered the burrito and my partner ordered the "chicken" tacos. When her plate came, she noticed that her rice was not on the plate but mashed potatoes were there instead. When we finally were able to flag the server down, she said that they ran out of rice and had to make more so she took her plate to the back to fix it. We were thinking that if you ran out, why didn't you come back to the table to ask what other options would she like or simply just wait on the rice to be done and update us on what was going on? She eventually came back with her plate but no rice was there yet again. She said they were still waiting to make some. Now we're thinking, how could rice be the issue here? At a Mexican joint at that. Now, I will say that my burrito was great yet a bit small in my opinion for the price. My partner and I didn't enjoy the beans. It lacked flavor and tasted like it came straight from the can. Also, the "chicken" lacked flavor as well. I'm talking about seasoning and not that fact that it was vegan. At the end, the manager came over out of no where and apologized for the rice debacle which was pleasant. She took a percentage off of our food which we appreciated since we didn't even ask for that. As I stated at the beginning, this was their second week. Maybe those issues have been worked out. As far as the food goes, I think some things were good and some lacked flavor including the salsa which I felt needed some salt to wake it up. read more

We stopped in during opening week and were very impressed with the atmosphere, food, and service. Everything was so tasty and flavorful. We ordered the Tex mex queso (which was delicious), house margs, and taco plates. We're looking forward to returning and trying other items off the menu; I was surprised how expansive the menu is, and am excited to try the burritos and enchiladas. This is a cute spot in Churchill. I love the mural and the music. Josh made this an excellent experience! His food recommendations were spot on and the service was awesome! The space is absolutely beautiful! I could sit at the bar for days just staring at the gorgeous tile with some of their delicious margaritas. The soyrizo taco was so good, full of flavor and texture. Unfortunately, the rest of the food felt really under-seasoned and forgettable, which was a bit of a letdown given how promising the concept is. I'm really hoping they find their rhythm and amp up the flavor because I'm overjoyed to finally have a vegan cantina in Richmond! read more

Have been fortunate to have now had several meals at this impressive new Richmond restaurant. I am not vegan/vegetarian but eat vegan food frequently with my daughter, who is vegan. It is hands down the best vegan restaurant in Richmond, and you don't have to be vegan to love it. Taco Vegana is nuevo Mexican, not old, and the design and decor of the space along with the hip, enthusiastic, attentive staff create the vibe. Absolutely love the food, which is fresh and richly flavored, but without the greasy aftertaste of typical Mexican food (this is coming from a non-vegan). Everything on the menu has been fantastic but you should never leave without the tres leches cake - a personal favorite of mine but Taco Vegana's version is just flat out extraordinary.
