I'd been hearing so many people talk about Tacos 1986 that when I happened to walk by one by the pier, I walked in without hesitation. I was here on a Sunday in the late afternoon. There were only a few other customers there aside from me. I ordered a combination of two tacos with rice and beans and asked the really friendly cashier which his favorites were and he said he liked carnitas and beef so I chose those. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side with seating is either at a counter or long communal table. There's a salsa bar with limes, salsa, etc. Both of my tacos were excellent but in my opinion the beef was better than the pork taco. The rice and beans were good, too. This a great spot for a quick bite when you're out and about. It's also close to the Santa Monica pier and very affordable parking garages. read more

The one thing that keeps this from being a full 5 stars is presentation and cleanliness, especially with the sauces. This little taco spot is located right by the beach on Colorado Ave, and is really convenient after spending the day in Santa Monica or watching the sunset. The staff was helpful, and I ordered a mulita with Al Pastor and a Carne Asada Taco. Prices were great, and it was just enough to fill me up. Both were delicious, especially the Pastor meat. Tragic experience here. Does not compare to the Westwood location at all. The staff was friendly but the food could not have been worse. The curbside pickup offered in toast is not actually an option which led to some scrambling to try to get our order. The toast app also offers weird choices for toppings on your tacos making the "default" option actually an entirely plain, naked taco. Our food was cold and devastating. Wandered in at 1pm and noticed the Breakfast Menu said 'until 12 (after we ordered I saw people getting item from that menu, so maybe they do have eggs after 12, I'll have to go back and see). So my BF and I shared a huge Chicken Burrito. Super juicy, it was running down our arms, not a ton of chicken in the burrito, what was there had very mild spice with a lot of flavor, lots of white beans for protein, excellent sauce. However this place, I eat every single thing. Love their salsa selections. Service is fast here and you aren't waiting too long for food. Only con would be that there isn't any seats. Came to this place during my vacation in Santa Monica and wanted this place to be good so bad as I was so excited to get some Mexican food but unfortunately it was such a terrible experience with service and food. The cashier was just extremely weird. She was helping someone when I showed up to pick up my order. She asked me what could she help me with while still attending the other customer, I responded in English "I'm here to pick up a order, and followed to speak in Spanish and said "It says it's ready in the app" and she looked away and didn't say anything to me & continued helping the person. She clearly spoke Spanish since she had a very strong accent & also was speaking to the cooks in Spanish, that whole interaction was so unnecessary and uncomfortable, she finished with the customer & followed to do other things while I was just standing there waiting to get her attention and receive my order. I waited but then, I just asked her about my order and she followed to give it to me, I didn't appreciate getting ignored just because she felt like it.. Now: Food was soooo bad. We ordered Steak Vampiros and it tasted as if they were 2 days old, the salsa and just everything tasted so nasty. We were staying at a hotel near the pier in Santa Monica and ate there for dinner our first night, we went back the second night and when we walked in my daughter ran to the bathroom as I was trying to order and the cashier lady got super hostile with me and told me I had to purchase something to use the bathroom and I told her I was trying to! I was looking at the menu! Then her and some other guy working there gave me a bunch of attitude and told me that the bathrooms were for customers only and I kept saying yes I am trying to be a customer and order something but they kept going on and on about the bathrooms so then I got fed up and said never mind I didn't want to give them my business so they barricaded my 13 year old daughter in the bathroom with a garbage can and she couldn't get out!!!! These people are absolutely insane! I cannot believe this actually happened I do not recommend this place at all. The food is as average at best and the only reason we went back there the second night and attempted to eat there again is because it was fairly inexpensive and close to our hotel, but the fact they tried holding my daughter hostage in the bathroom!!!!! Ahh,Tacos 1986. What can I say? They sure have interesting food. But what I really like is that you can find a special surprise, in the form of glass, in your burrito. It's really something when you take a bite out of your meal and have it cut your mouth and throat on the way down. But really, really, what I love even more about this place is that when you let the staff know that you found this special surprise in your food, they respond nonchalantly with the following " Oh yea, some glass broke over the counter. I guess it fell into the meat." And don't make any intent to get rid of possibly contaminated meat. Oh, top notch service for sure.
