This place absolutely lives up to the hype, and it's a great choice if you're looking to support a small family business and get some fresh and yummy fish tacos. The fish and shrimp tacos are the kind you think about after you've left Ensenada. They're always perfectly battered, crispy without being too greasy, and piled into warm corn tortillas that hold everything together. I highly recommend the traditional fish tacos, which are made with a delicate whitefish that the region is known for. The seafood tastes fresh, the toppings are simple and traditional (with pico de gallo and shredded cabbage), and once you hit it with their creamy green and spicy salsas and a generous squeeze of lime, it's the perfect taste of coastal Mexico. And don't forget to add that cold bottle of Mexican Coke (there's nothing as refreshing on a hot Ensenada afternoon). This is a little taco truck / stand, so be prepared to get in a long line with local workers. There's a very small picnic table for eating, but most folks grab and go. The hygeine practices seem adequate by Mexican standards, but you may want to bring your own hand sanitizer to tidy up before eating. They fry up your seafood to order, and it's so fun to watch! Since this is a very local spot that caters to folks who live and work in town, this isn't located in the main tourist drag. Be prepared to walk to get there but it's worth every step. No frills, no overthinking it, just really good tacos done right. This is the kind of spot where you eat standing up, immediately want another round, and start wondering how soon you can come back. We got 2 shrimp tacos and 6 fish tacos, plus 4 cokes for 20 bucks. This is a taco stand so be aware there is nothing but a bench to eat your tacos. I remember one place I came to last year that I was dying to eat at again, but I'm always open to recommendations. The other place was described as "Good," but Castillo was described as "Perfect." Honestly, even if it's recency bias, Castillo was WAAAYYYY better than the other place. The fish and shrimp were fried and battered to perfection, and it was light and airy. The workers were incredibly helpful and polite and nice. The menu mentioned "Tacos de pescado/camarón" and "Orden de pescado/camarón." I asked what the difference was since both had different price points, and they said that was "orden" was for to-go. I loved this place so much. I wish I could've had more. Also, the workers were so helpful, because some of the people in our group wanted birria, but we were told that birria in Mexico is considered a breakfast and lunch item, and not dinner. I asked for some recommendations, and they gave me some great recommendations for places and even for ceviche since they don't do ceviche. This was the 3rd stop on our taco tour in Ensenada. Very similar to the other 2 spots we went to. These tacos I believe were $1.75 a taco (35 pesos). Once again, great tacos. Perfectly fried fish, cabbage, pico, and I added lime and hot sauce. They packed this fish taco...it was thinner pieces of fish than the other spots, but they hooked it up with multiple pieces of fish in the taco. In Ensenada for the day and had to get a fish taco. I had tacos fenix in my cross hairs but since tacos Castillo was closer to the cruise ship I arrived on I decided to give this a try. Coming from LA I know my way around a good fish taco but these are over the top. Lightly battered, extremely fresh fish, and simple toppings are what make this taco so delicious. When you come to Ensenada this is the fish taco you expect to get. The shrimp taco is no slouch either. And at a buck for a taco you can't lose. Highly recommend coming here. I have eaten my fair share of tacos but this place takes the cake! This place is family owned and has been in the same location for years so we were told it was the best in town. First off the people are so welcoming. It was my first time in Ensenada and they were really friendly and thanking the locals for bringing us to their taco stand. I decided to try the fish tacos since that was what we went for! OMG the tacos are amazing. What I loved is that the fish tacos weren't "overly" fishy. I love fish but sometimes fish tacos can be a little much. These were perfect! Just the right amount of flavors and the salsa's to choose from were awesome! My favorite was the Habanero one that had somewhat of a citrus tang to it! I had two of those and a coke in the bottle! After eating these tacos I couldn't leave back to the US without stopping again. On our way back home we came and ate again! This time I decided to try the shrimp tacos, they too were excellent. However, the fish tacos were out of this world and I favored those more. The experience was great! The food was amazingly delicious and I can't wait to go back just for the tacos! Three ladies working the hot oil, didn't bat an eyelash when we walked up and asked for 12 tacos. The fish and shrimp don't have time to get old here, there is constant turnover.
