Kind of a love/hate relationship with this place. This is my bf's go-to burrito place, but it's really inconsistent on their quality. When they're on point with your order it's a really tasty burrito. I think it was a winner when I got the salsa throughout the burrito and not just on one side. Also no bones is definitely and always appreciated. When it's not their best day there will be a tiny bone in your burrito. I told the bf this and he was like at least you know it's fresh cut meat (wft?!). I'm cool with no bones. I do find their burritos on the salty side, which I guess for some that means flavor. I sometimes enjoy their meats but I've had a lot of better places. I tried their passion fruit aqua fresca the first time I went there and it was really good. But every other time it's been bad. I think and hope they mashed up the seeds from the passion fruit into the drink. Also I think they supplement the drink with pineapple juice. I'm cool with Kerns, but don't call it passion fruit when it's mainly pineapple. Located by the railroad tracks on Hesperian. They have their own parking lot. They have a lot of bad drivers as customers so please be cautious and these people think they can back up park too. Not sure on the pricing since this is the bf's fave spot so he treats. It's been a while since I've been here. Had the regular asada burrito, no rice and It was pretty still pretty heavy! It was so good and I'm stuffed! Tried to eat the whole thing but couldn't. Fabulous tacos. However the burritos are dry. The customer service at this location is dry too. It feels un welcoming and the staff is not interactive with customers who don't speak Spanish. DoorDash review: we were craving Mexican and decided to try a taqueria we've seen online for years now (and no, it's not related to the famous El Gordo locations). The burritos are long and skinny with great tortillas but a strange taste. The pastor is so heavily marinated and tossed with peppers that it tasted less like a burrito and more like an ethnic wrap. "Guess the Prices!" This is a small establishment with a small parking lot off a busy street. There is a nice covered patio with picnic tables. However when it comes to the menu, the customers are kept guessing. The prices have all been taped over. Maybe at one time the prices were listed, but I sure don't see it now. There is also a chalkboard, which is half legible. Nevertheless, I assumed the prices would be reasonable and they were. I paid about $8 for two steak tacos. They were surprisingly tasty, and came with sauce, limes, and vegetables on the side. My order was delivered quickly to me. So overall a mixed visit. I really give it a 3.5 rating. The food was pretty decent overall and I liked the outdoor seating. I got a spread of tacos to try a variety of their meats. The tripas is a must get if you are into them. They are the perfect mix of crispy and chewy pieces. However, the fish taco was a bit disappointing. Too much tortilla for the amount of fish. Times changed. If you had asked me to review this place a couple years ago I'd give it a 4-5 star review. However this place has gone down in terms of quality. For starters the rice in the burritos is undercooked. This happened during the last two occasions I've been here. Literally feels like I'm chewing seeds. And secondly, what has happened to the Carne Asada? There's pieces of cartilage and mysterious chunks that are tough and cannot be chewed. I dare not say but it's hard to imagine it's beef. Not the first time I've been and ordered these tacos but today...today was a little different and finally deserved a review. This review is for the tacos only. There was no line and we got our food pretty quick. Today these tacos hit the spot so much that right after we came home from eating, I knocked out from what was probably one of the best food coma ever. If you're basic as hell and always only order carne asada or al pastor, I highly recommend you try their specialty meats. We had cabeza and suadera which on their menu translates into something like beef cheek/head and beef navel, respectively. (Just try it, don't think about it)! Super flavorful, fatty, melt in your mouth cabeza tacos glistening with just the perfect amount of grease to gently coat the soft but durable tortilla is seriously the combo you need in a street taco. They were so good and I really appreciated that even though the prices aren't listed on their menu, the price I paid was well worth it. The Al Pastor is the real winner. They are delicious flavor and always made perfect. The only reason that it's not a perfect score is because the carnitas. They used to make the carnitas so good and crispy. This time, it was ok but there was a lot of fat in the tacos. I know that sometimes it's unavoidable but when you have to pick through the meat, it's kind of a bummer when it's a $3.00 taco. If we'd not have ordered that - it would have been amazing. Was in the mood for tacos and decided to stop at tacos El Gordo for some Al Pastor tacos. At first glance the menu is very dated and does not have the pricing on it which was not very convenient. The seating was good with large tables for families, and it was very clean. The service was good and promptly took my order and proceeded to wait with my extra large horchata. The food came out quickly and was hot. The plate looked good it had a radish, onion, pineapple and a jalapeno that was very delicious. These were the best Al Pastor tacos I've had in a long time. The price was a little high at $3.85 per taco. Burritos and tortas were at $13. Not sure if this is the new market rate, but the quality of the tacos I felt was worth it. Gave this place an honest try on multiple occasions. Ordered burritos a couple times from here. The flavor was good but the ratio of rice in the burrito is always insane. yummmm!!!! My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in the Bay Area if you are anywhere near San Leandro you have got to stop by. The flavor and quality of the food is always consistent and high grade. The chicken and the steak are my go to protein choices but sometimes I switch it up everything on the menu is pure fire just sooo delicious. No indoor seating but they have a nice outside patio area or when it's cold out I usually just eat inside of my car. Anytime I go I've only waited from 5-7 minutes for my order even on a busy day they work so quickly here and all the workers are always in a great mood. We loved Tacos El Gordo in San Diego and was expecting this to be the same. The tacos are good, but not as good as the ones in San Diego. Still some of the best tacos you can grab in the Bay Area, but if you're ever down south, don't pass up trying it down there. Today I got 2 lengua, al pastor, and cabeza tacos. Yum! The roasted red salsa was delish as well. Usually I prefer salsa verde, with the exception of today. Also got a super shrimp burrito for later, but haven't eaten it yet. Tacos El Gordo is my go to spot whenever I'm craving for tacos. I love how they have a variety of meats and speciality innards if you are adventurous. My picks are carne asada, tripas , and cabasa (cheek meat). The grilled onion and jalapeño they give you on the side is on point. You can't go wrong with any tacos from here. They are crispy, flavorful and the hot salsas are chef kiss. You will not be disappointed. Don't forget to wash down your tacos with a large Jamaica too! Asada Tacos: 4.5/5 The meat is super soft and juicy. The best thing is the chile and onion on the side. Al Pastor Tacos: 2/5 The meat is not consistent. The last time I tried these the meat looked and tasted undercooked. Gordita: 3/5 It was super crunchy and was filled with lots of chicharrón. Unfortunately, for me it was too dry. Strawberry Horchata: 2/5 Way too sweet. Just order regular Horchata because you can't taste the strawberry flavor. For starters the flavor wasn't bad that came to a hault when I bit into something hard I figured maybe it was an over cooked piece of meat. Same happened with my husband and his burrito. Took another bite again another hard piece and after looking at the chunks it seems like maybe their asada is a bunch of random meats mixed together.
