Looking on Yelp for some tacos I decided on Tacos El Rey. Great reviews and close to where I was. Gentlemen in the truck welcomed me and was very friendly. I ordered two carne asada tacos. As all the other reviewers said, they were delicious. I believe they use a chuck roast instead of a steak cut. Identical to a truck I have visited for 20 years in Guerneville. I've eaten here once, but my cousin swears by this truck. The chicken super burrito was real good and at $10, not a bank buster. For lack of a better way to describe it, I'll go with it tasted super fresh. From the tortilla to the beans and rice, I was impressed, and it's been a hot minute since a burrito impressed. Ordered the Super burrito with chicken, and it was delicious. I could taste the everything that was in it. The cilantro and salsa were a nice add. Initially, I asked for no beans when they said that all they had was refried beans, but I changed my mind when they said that it was made with canola oil and not lard. Guy behind me in line: "3 fish tacos please" Girl behind him: "2 fish tacos please" The next lady: "2 fish tacos please" So today time I came prepared: "I'd like the fish tacos please!" They were delicious. $4 each, featuring super fresh flaky fish, two nice soft corn tortillas, and served with rice, tomato, cilantro, onion, salsa, sour cream, lettuce, guacamole, and cheese. You'll find Tacos El Rey parked almost every day next to Ironworks gym near the bottom of Ashby ave. They also park briefly at 8th and Parker from 10:00am to 11:30am on Wednesdays to serve the folks that work at Bayer Berkeley and the surrounding neighborhood. Fair warning: if there's no crowd, they might up and leave before 11:30. I've more than once shown up at 11:20 to find there's no tacos for me. Oh, that carne asada burrito? It took me two attempts to finally locate this place. The first time I drove in circles around Potter street, up 7th, all the way to the Bayer campus. I kept telling my friends in the car, "I read about this great taco truck on yelp. It exists, I swear!" The second time, I drove down Ashby so far I knew I would have to get on the freeway and finally spotted it on the right, next to the car dealership. I parked next to the truck, ordered my food and bam! fifteen long minutes later, my food was ready. I then had to drive onto 80 and exit University before I could loop around and go home. A total forty minute adventure including driving and wait time. The third time I went, I parked in the parking lot before the truck which is connected to Ironworks. I sneaked through the parking lot back onto Potter street to go home without having to get on the freeway. Nice. There is always a wait, but I have to say, for 1.25 tacos, it is well worth it. How is the food you say? What does it matter when the tacos are 1.25? Okay well, the carne asada and the tacos al pastor are delicious. The tacos de lengua and carnitas are not flavored as well as I had hoped. I have yet to try the fish tacos or the burritos. Next time. At these prices, I have no choice but to keep coming back. My and my buddy have been looking for a good burrito joint around the eville area for the past week. We tried Juan's place and los canteros taqueria. Both didn't satisfy our desires for a dirty flavorful burrito. I mean dirty in the most endearing way possible. Coming to save us was the shiny silver Tacos El Rey Taco Truck. I've tried both the carne asada and al pastor super burrito. Hands down the al pastor burrito was superior. The meat is flavored well and it has that tiny kick to it that gives it those extra points. Best of all it was only $5.50. I probably would get extra salsa on the side for 50 cents next time. The truck isn't that easy to find. It's right by the bmw dealership. Funny thing was the dudes working at the dealership would drive the couple hundred feet they would need to in their golf carts to grab some food from the truck instead of walking. It's greasy so watch out for grease drippings trickling down your fingers. Jalapeño, lime, radishes and a few tortilla chips on the side. Taco: $1.50 Carne Asada. Regular taco. Small portion. I've found my all-time favorite bean and cheese burrito in foil place, and this is it. The tortilla is grilled, the beans are fresh and firm, and the cheese is not stringy and greasy. It is marvelous. They do a lot of business, but the man who usually takes orders is always friendly (for a while he had a Salvador Dali mustache). You can get a little bag full of radishes and jalapenos or a little bag of carrots for free. read more

Happened to be driving by and decided to try them out without looking them up at all. Ordered the super burrito with carnitas and overall it was very lack luster. It's a big burrito forsure but I felt half it was was rice, not to mention I didn't see any guacamole or sour cream making me think I just got a regular burrito for a super burrito price. Towards the end, the burrito was so soggy it literally turned into soup. Also asked for hot sauce and limes on the side and got a tiny 1oz hotsauce and a mixed bag of veggies on the side. I live in Berkeley and was so excited when a taco truck popped up here. Gone are the days when I had to travel to East Oakland to hit up a taco truck! I am a fan of taco truck eats, and I only order one thing...TACOS. I order chicken or carne asada (depending on my mood) with everything on it. These are "street style" tacos with the tortillas, meat of choice, cilantro, onion, and salsa....YUM! The hours for the truck on this site say 11-5, but I want to stress that there have been times where I have gone down there at 4 and the truck was not there! I highly suggest keeping the phone number handy and calling before hand if you plan on going towards closing time. ENJOY! read more

WOW! that's all I can say. My wife and I were craving Tacos al Pastor today and decided to take a drive to this taco truck. It was actually located near the corner of 7th and Ashby- On the Ashby side right before the BMW car dealership. Unfortunately, they had run out of al Pastor so we went with the asada and tongue tacos. Let me tell ya'- they were some damn good tacos. Everyone has different expectations, but for this Mexican man who has eaten tacos on all corners of the world- they definitely met my expectations! The asada meat was a bit greasy but that's what makes them authentic in my book. I can't tell if the tongue was boiled or fried but it was better than most other places who boil their tongue and top it off with a bland salsa. Cannot wait to go back again! read more

Favoriteeeeeee....! Best taco truck I know of. I've asked them and they said they are there Mon-Thurs nights, not exactly sure what times. I come to this climbing gym in Berkeley on the weekdays even though it's not the closest one to me, JUST so that I can get a few of these tacos. Usually 1 or 2 before climbing, and 1 or 2 afterward... and $5 will get you 4 tacos! I get the carne asada (beef) and tripa (tripe). A bit too scared to try the cabeza (head) and lengua (tongue), but I hear those are delicious too... And the jalopenos they provide with the tacos are delicious! My stomach can't handle the spiciness too well, but I'll always eat them with the tacos anyway and suffer the consequences later because they are just THAT worth the extra flavor. What can you say about a food truck? I've never gotten food poisoning here? On the real though, Tacos El Rey is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. FOOD -- Legit taco truck. None of that healthy burrito stuff from Berkeley Bowl! My sample lunch in order of heaviness: 4 tacos (carne, al pastor, lengua, carnitas), quesadilla, torta, super burrito, or steak dinner plate. All those choices are very good and filling. Side effects include food induced coma (FIC), lethargy, and spontaneous Spanish mode alla Toy Story 3. PRICE -- Prices are very standard for taco trucks. The best bang-for-the-buck would be the super burrito IMO. TIP -- Call in your orders when you get familiar with the menu. Lines may get long during the lunch hour. CONCLUSION -- Whether you're on your lunch break or breaking from climbing, Tacos El Rey is a great choice. read more

First review on Yelp. Went here with my boyfriend for lunch because of the Yelp reviews. Felt compelled to post because Yelp usually hasn't steered me wrong and this time it did. So... I really can't recommend this place as a GREAT taco truck. I suppose it's okay, but I've definitely had better. As a _major_ fan of Mexican food, I've eaten a LOT of it. I've been down to Mexico several times, lived in Stockton and Livermore, so I like to think I've sampled all kinds of Mexican food. Having said that.. I'm not comparing this food to "authentic" Mexican, because really, it's all in people's preferences. What I am rating it on are some basics that I think make for a good meal. Essentially, they skimp on the meat and it's not good quality. They slice it super thin, almost like deli meat, so you get none of the richness or juiciness of chunks of meat. Also, given that they double the corn tortillas (which, interestingly, they rarely do in Mexico) you barely taste the meat because it is too thin. Instead, I tasted the corn tortilla and my mouth was left with a lot of air in it. I know.. sounds strange.. but if I'm trying to get a basic, simple, satisfying meal and I eat three tacos and I'm left hungry, we have a problem. Not what I'm looking for in a taco. I want a balance of the two. Finally, the standard hot sauce they put on it was way too mild. One of the highlights of taco truck/taqueria tacos is the extra ummph provided by the salsa. Not too hot (unless you like it that way), but just enough to give you a flavor sensation. On the plus side, they have Mexican bottled coke, made sure to include the lime, and I agree that the jalapeno was yummy!
