I love that there are more taco trucks where I live. This place was parked in Yen's Auto, which is located across the street from the Dollar Tree. I ordered an asada burrito and two tacos (pollo and lengua). The lengua taco was probably my favorite of the three. Excellent tacos! I already had lunch waiting for me at home but I have passed by this food truck many many times and decided now was the opportune time to try one. I pulled into the open space near the truck and checked out what they had to offer. It all looked great but would it taste great? FOOD: The short answer is yes! Because I had lunch available, I only got the one taco. But the tortillas were nice and soft and full of flavor, and the meat is tender and also packed with umami. They had a couple of things on the menu I'd never heard of but want to try and many different combos of meat and dishes. Quesabirria, sopes, tortas, etc. interestingly, they do not have any combo plates or side dishes so if you were looking for beans and rice, they don't have it here. If they do, it wasn't on their menu at all. For that reason, I gave them one last star because the food was really tasty. SERVICE: Quick and friendly. Definitely worthwhile. Located in the parking lot of two separate businesses, an auto shop and smog shop on the corner of Gilman Street and San Pablo Avenue near the border of Albany and Berkeley, California, Tacos El Rulas is a Mexican food truck from father and daughter duo of Angeles and Raul Rodriguez that specializes in traditional Mexican takeout dishes sold at affordable price points along with some modern takes on a number of dishes from Birria tacos to Hawaiian-style Mexican sandwiches. After starting over four years ago parking at locations in Richmond, Tacos El Rulas really hit its stride when they moved to their current location in late 2020 across the street from Tokyo Fish Market and a Dollar Tree. It is here that Tacos El Rulas received additional buzz thanks to an article praising the Rodriguez's bringing authentic cuisine to this neighborhood in Northwest Berkeley. This is why I have wanted to come here for quite some time as the article had me intrigued and their location was so easily accessible from a quick drive from the Gilman Street exit off of Interstate 80 on the weekday afternoon that I decided to get lunch for myself and others back home. Thankfully there was a metered parking space in front of their truck that I managed to snag so I quickly perused their menu and ordered as by the time I arrived no customers were present but by the time I left there were plenty of customers waiting for their orders. The menu at Tacos El Rulas is broken up into categories including their Soft Tacos with various options for fillings, Classics, Sandwiches, Handmade Fare and Beverages & Snacks. The first menu item I decided to order was their Burrito from the Classics section of their menu, with my choice of a Carne Asada filling, rice, beans, onion, cilantro, hot sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla. I also decided to order a La Torta from their Sandwiches section of their menu, with my choice of Carnitas, which is slow cooked pork, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, melted cheese, queso fresco, mayonnaise, and pickled jalapenos served on a toasted white bun. And since I was here and decided to make my journey here well worth my time with multiple meals, I decided to order a Mulita from their Handmade Fare section of their menu, which was a taco sandwich with two handmade corn masa tortillas with cheese and my choice of Pastor pork filling, which is spit-roasted adobo pork and pineapple. I really wanted to order a Horchata drink from their Beverage menu but owner Raul who took my order let me know that they were out of that drink and none of their bottled and canned drinks that were on ice in front of their truck didn't intrigue me. All told my meal cost 26 dollars before tip, which wasn't too bad of a price point considering how much food I received this afternoon. It took about ten minutes for my food to be freshly prepared from both of the Rodriguez's, and I was certainly surprised how large my burrito and sandwich were in size. When I got home with my meal, I decided to feast on my Mulita first and it was a tasty if somewhat unremarkable treat, but it was also filling lunchtime meal. I decided to save my burrito and sandwich for lunch on successive future days and was not disappointed as they were both easily sharable and filled with plenty of savory ingredients that makes me love freshly prepared Mexican cuisine. Perhaps the real surprise was my La Torta as I wasn't expecting anything quite that large and for the cost of 11 dollars is a real steal. With the times we are living in, prices have gone up one dollar for a number of dishes at Tacos El Rulas, including my burrito and sandwich. But now I can't wait to come back and try their signature tacos, especially their Birria Taco, their Cubano Sandwich which adds ham, chorizo and Milanese breaded steak to their signature Torta, and their Huaraches which is an oval handmade grilled corn masa base topped with a filling of my choice and all of their fresh fixings including a cactus salad. Talk about authentic! And at Tacos El Rulas you're getting all of that plus so much more. Here's to hoping their reign on this nondescript corner of Berkeley is a long and fruitful one for Tacos El Rulas, with the quality and quantity of their dishes, they have met the hype and then some in my humble opinion! read more

The Mulita ($5) with Pastor filling was amazing. The looks are deceiving. When it came out, I was disappointed because it seemed like just a sad, flat, circular tortilla, but the taste was delicious and the Pastor was very tender. The Cubano Sandwich ($13) is filled heavily with meat so it definitely merits its price. The Quesabirria comes with Consome (beef broth), but they only give you one per order so do separate orders if you want multiple cups. They had some of the best Consome I've tried, but I felt the Quesabirria was a bit doughy and got cold quickly. Got the chicken burrito and carnitas quesadilla (there was a crunch in the carnitas). We got there on around 1:45pm on Saturday (no line). This may be our goto burrito place (we used to go to the ones on Solano Avenue). Today I wanted to experience the taco truck "Taco's el Rulas" new location a couple blocks from my house. Three people and a big truck. Located on the corner of San Pablo and Gilman in Berkeley almost Albany. I walked up and no one was there. Yay!!! It looked clean and had a "Passed" sticker in the window from the health dept. I ordered one carnitas street taco ($2.50). Easy-peasy right? NO ! First I gave him a $20. He asked if I had a smaller bill. I didn't. He had to make change out of the tip jar. This is a business. Noon is the lunch hour. Please, in future, come prepared with a proper bank to help your customers. Sadly for the next customer he also had a $20. I waited and waited and waited. Over 10 minutes for one taco. In the meantime, the 6 customers that arrived after me, all had their food and left. I was still wondering where my taco was. In the meantime I asked him if he had any jalapenos in escabeche (pickled jalapenos). He didn't know what I was talking about. I finally got my little order and went home to eat it. When I opened it. It was a nice looking taco. Definitely worth the price. It had a slice of lime and guess what else? Escabeche. That was the stuff, he didn't know what it was, but served it to me. If there will be a delay for any order, rule number one, tell the customer when they order it will be a few minutes on that item. Then they can ask for something fast and easy. Since it's prepaid, we couldn't cancel the order. They had the money. My wife was almost late for work. Had we known, she could have called in to let her coworkers know she was delayed. Final thought. Good food. But I will ask if it's fast next time. Maybe I just ordered the wrong item for easy prep. I have had this spot bookmarked since it came to my attention, either via Yelp or Berkeleyside Nosh. It's been several weeks and I no longer remember. Today I came here while Alan was having lunch w/ a friend. I arrived around noon and saw a small crowd waiting. I drove into the lot and found a parking space close to the truck. I went over to the crowd, asked if people were waiting to order or for their food and most were waiting for their food. There was one man in front of me who was ordering. When it was my turn I asked for two lengua tacos and was dismayed to learn they were out of lengua, which the woman at the window assured me was temporary. I decided to order two quesatacos w/ carnitas as the meat, everything on them. I didn't know what "everything" meant, but was game. Then I waited. The friendly crowd skewed male (one other woman arrived after me) and Hispanic. Everyone was masked, aside from a latecomer on a motorcycle who wasn't, although he wore his helmet when he ordered, which served as a mask. What struck me was how considerate everyone was not to be cutting in front of anyone. The man right after me was concerned after ordering that he had inadvertently cut in front of the two men who had arrived after him. I told him that they had arrived after he was at the window and that he was fine. It was sunny but windy and I went to my car to fetch my hat. When the man in front of me received his food he told me I would be next and when I did receive it and was walking to my car, the man after me told me, "Enjoy the food, mama.". In all it was a lovely experience. When I got home the food was still hot. Served in a compostable paper tray, as opposed to the paper plates you usually get from taco trucks, in addition to the quesatacos there was a long, slender, roasted pepper, a small roasted skin-on white onion, and small containers of salsa, red and green. I didn't eat the pepper, but the onion was delicious. The tacos were very tasty and I would have them again. My disappointment at the lack of lengua was completely assuaged. I didn't taste the salsas because the tacos were so good they didn't need additional flavor, but the salsas smelled good. They also make sopes and huaraches, both of which I like. Today they have fish tacos and grilled shrimp is on the menu, both of which Alan would like. They take credit cards as well as cash. Discovered this spot courtesy of sf.eater.com's "15 New Restaurants to Try in the East Bay", published March 1st, 2021. First impression I received was upon placing the order. The young woman taking thee orders seemed like she really didn't want to be there, and that any questions about the menu were a nuisance to her. I ordered a Hurache, and found it suspicious when upon asking how long my order would take, she said "About 7mins". 7mins later, I picked up my food, and the young lady kindly obliged my request for a squirt of hand sanitizer. I went to eat my food, and noticed there were napkins, but no fork. So I returned for a fork, and was anticipating finally digging into my meal. To my deep disappointment, my food was cold. The base of the Huarache tasted partially cooked, as if one was supposed to take it home and finish cooking it themselves. The meat was precooked, and it seemed as if no real effort was made to reheat it at all. I hesitated writing this review, as this is a small business, and business is challenging in the time of Covid.
