We come here twice a week for my family and spend about 40 bucks each time. It's always been fine. I've tried Tacos Gavilan twice now, and it's the same result. It's just... barely average. It's not bad, and it's certainly not overly good. With all the phenomenal mom & pop Mexican restaurants, this is place simply does not "rate". For chain restaurants, I'd put it somewhere closer to Del Taco on the low end, versus Chipotle on the high end. I've had the pollo and the asada super burritos. Both were just "okay"... at best! I stopped by El Gavilan in Norwalk after visiting family and picked up three beef tongue (lengua) tacos to eat on my drive home. After finishing the first taco, I noticed the flavor was off. When I started the second one, I removed some of the meat and smelled it. It had an unusual odor that did not resemble what lengua typically smells or tastes like. Despite being very hungry, I took a bite of the second taco, but the taste was significantly worse than the first. I did not eat the third taco. A few hours later, once I arrived home, I became violently ill and spent the next 48 hours dealing with severe food poisoning symptoms, needing to use the restroom every 30 minutes. This was not a mild stomach issue. It was intense and prolonged. Based on my experience, the meat may not have been fresh or may have been reheated improperly. Whatever the cause, the result was serious and concerning. Food safety should never be a question, especially with meat products. I cannot recommend this place and strongly advise others to be cautious. No meal is worth risking your health. read more

I have been to several locations. This one is very clean and spacious. I ordered the asada super mulita. Had a good amount of asada, cheesy and a lot of sour cream. There was a little bit of guacamole. However it was delicious and made to order. I ordered the pastor tacos. The pastor had a good flavor. New favorite taco spot! I've had tacos all over Southern California and even throughout Mexico, and this place comes very close to the real deal. The meat is packed with flavor, the yellow corn tortillas are fresh and warm, and the condiments--salsa, onions, beans, grilled onions--are all on point. The place is also spotless, which says a lot. Honestly, it blows King Taco out of the water (I've never understood the hype--King Taco quality just isn't there). I am SO annoyed with myself for not snatching photos today at my first visit to Gavilan. I will 100% be back so stay tuned for the updated review I used to see this big billboard on the freeway with a chicken and the gavilan name, was always curious but never really hungry enough to steer off my route to check it out. Then one day my SIL brought over this bean and cheese burrito of my dreams and I swore I'd go back. Months (a year?) later and I still never checked it out. Then last night my SIL brought me CHAMPURRADO from Gavilan (which she calls divine) so I took it as a sign to make the trip today. The location is across the street from Candlelight Bakery and is actually quite large. My SIL told us going inside to eat is way better than going thru drive-thru despite the convenience because of their "open bar" where you can get little containers of beans and carrots/jalapenos. I was surprised at how large the establishment is and the way everything is set up...it feels nice and open even if there are a lot of patrons inside (which there were). The menu is straight forward with multiple meat options (quesadillas, mulitas, tortas, tacos, platos, sopes, nachos, burritos). They have several self-service fountain drink options as well as Jamaica and horchata without extra charge which is great! I think the horchata is actually made out of rice instead of milk. I ordered an al pastor mulita, chicken taco, and carne asada sope. My favorite was the sope; most places have a really dense sope but Gavilan managed to make it crispy on the outside and appropriately chewy on the inside. It also tasted a little seasoned which was super yum. It might be a good idea to ask for light crema since they were really generous with it. The rice was okay, the guacamole was mid-ish. The condiment bar was great, plenty of packets of hot sauce, packets of carrots and jalapeños, fresh diced onions and cilantro, and grilled onions and jalapeños. COMPLIMENTARY! What sold me was how clean their store was along with individually packaged sides (lemon, chopped cilantro/onions, pickled jalapeno/carrots, hot sauce packets) for sanitary purposes. It's been a while since I found a new favorite taco spot and this is definitely it. Their Carne Asada tacos and chicken tacos are so bomb. The meat is seasoned really well and the tortilla is really nice and soft. The chicken sopes are incredible. They have this amazing crema and cheese sprinkled on top, it gives such a nice finishing touch to the entire meal. the corn masa is thick and chewy. They have an unlimited salsa bar, which actually has beans! (i've never seen that before but it's actually very generous of them and delicious!) and their drink selection is unlimited as well where they have sodas AND agua frescas! The Rosecrans location for Tacos Gavilan messed up my order which I picked delivery service for. I picked the super mulitas with the sour cream and avocados added, but they gave me the cheaper regular ones. I called twice since they hung up on me the first time, and they admitted they messed up the order but disagreed to even a partial refund! We live in Carson but every time we visit our family in Norwalk, we have to pass by Tacos Gavilan new location in Norwalk by Rosecrans because of their great delicious, tasty food. The place is huge, very spacious, very clean. The food superb, lots of variety of choices with our favorites from Super Chicken Quesedilla to Torta Asada and Burritos. The manager esp the staff exceptional. They are very courteous, pleasant to talk to, efficient & great cooks. I did not realized I left my phone at the restaurant, & after 2 hours found it safeguarded by the staff with my credit card & check & cash intact. They are very honest & friendly not asking for anything in return. Overall it is an exceptional restaurant, with great staff providing excellent service. Great Job everyone!
