Just 3 minutes from the southern edge of Garland is La Carretera Modern-Mex Kitchen. Straight down Broadway past all of the hustle and bustle at I-30. This place is a gem! A diamond in the rough! My hard to please husband ordered barbacoa, chorizo and trompo tacos and said that each one of them were amazing. I had the parrillada with bacon wrapped shrimp, steak, chicken and sausage on a bed of grilled onions, peppers, and rajas. I barely had room for the rice but it was also stellar! Don't sleep on the homemade corn tortillas either! All of this with "puro ambiente" - lots of Instaworthy selfie backdrops and a very talented woman singing karaoke. With one meal, this has become our go-to spot. We didn't have alcoholic drinks this time (I know, I know - who eats Mexican food without a cold drink) but they have an impressive menu of cocktails! First of all, this place has a really nice atmosphere, service was good and food was decently priced. However, the chicken enchiladas do not taste homemade, they taste something akin to the El Fenix chicken enchiladas you buy at the grocery store. They have the same texture, almost the same flavor, and all you have to do is just heat them up. These chicken enchiladas are relatively uniform, have a uniform taste, and texture. Which would lead any reasonable person to believe they were pre-made and simply reheated to serve to customers. The refried beans have a neutral flavor, they're not bad but they are not that great. This Spanish / Mexican rice needs a little more seasoning but it was pretty decent. All in all the entree was edible and it tasted fine overall. Would I recommend this place for one of my top five favorites? No, they will need to drastically change the flavor profiles of their cuisine as well as start making it from scratch. The ceviche on the other hand was very flavorful, the use of half a sliced avocado as decoration or part thereof, was a really great idea because it lended to the flavor profile overall and also visually appealing. All in all I say give this place a chance, but do not go in expecting scratch kitchen flavor or visual appeal. I'm giving this three stars based on atmosphere, service and overall presentation. Scratch kitchen or homestyle flavor is rather lacking in my opinion, and use of precooked packaged processed enchiladas is a definite one star deduction. Don't get me wrong I love Mexican food, I even make chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce at home, as well as cheese enchiladas with onions, but all are made from scratch. I have regrettably had the store-bought prepared enchiladas, and they have the precise same flavor and visual profile as what we were served in the restaurant. read more

They forgot rice on the side , and it took 20 mins just for a fountain drinks very few people and they all got food way before us when we were there way before . The food was very affordable. They give you a small complementary bean soup that is very tasty. The food was great and so was the horchata. We just moved to the area about a month or so ago and found this place our first weekend. We've been here 5 times now and love everything about their menu, atmosphere, and staff. They just expanded their restaurant, (as there was a insurance office in the adjacent area). New bar, beautiful artwork, friendly owners and respective staff add to an amazing restaurant! I've had all the A la carte tacos and they do not lack flavor! We were on the hunt for some good Mexican food and came across La Carretera. Saturday 10-29-2022 my fiancé and I and our two friends dined in and it will be our last time. Every dish that came out was cold, from the queso to our enchilada verdes entrees. One of my friends orders was completely wrong and asked the waitress to take the plate back and to bring out what he ordered. The waitress stated that she could do that but would have to pay for the incorrect meal because it had already came out of the kitchen. When we asked to speak to a manager, she stated there wasn't one available. I have never experienced such poor customer service. My only disappointment was the drinks we ordered were supposed to be Don Julio, Topo Chico and citrus. The tequila wasn't Don Julio, the "water" wasn't Topo Chico, it was flat.
