This place is so lowkey, stumbled upon it on here and decided to check it out with my boyfriend. We ordered a mango, tamarindo margarita and tacos (de pastor and carne asada) and everything was DELICIOUS. The margaritas are served in the cutest mason jars with fruit inside. They gave me extra mango for mine. The tacos were delicious - meat was flavored wonderfully and the tortillas were nice and soft. 2 tacos for $4.50 was what's on the menu, which is pretty good. The owners are awesome - we talked to them for a while too. The place is cute with lots of cute Mexican decor. I think it's a treat for those who live in the area. The place is cute and the service was really good. I like the ambiance and decor. I came here because I had a Groupon and wanted to try a new spot. Their margaritas were good; I had the classic margarita and it was good. The tacos were good, but not the best tacos I've had. I had the chicken tinga, choriqueso, and the cochinita tacos (based on reviews I read). They were okay, but just didn't really do it for me. The chicken tinga was probably my favorite because it tasted the most fresh. The choriqueso was a little bland. I also had the Guacamole as an appetizer and that was good, especially when you mixed their house salsa (which was really fresh) with the guac. I think this place is good if you have a Groupon, but I wouldn't return and pay full price to eat here. I think that Chicago has better tacos options. read more

Last night, I had the worst experience that I've ever had at a restaurant, at Tacos Tequilas. I called in for a pickup order for a chicken burrito, with no cheese or sour cream. I showed up to the restaurant 10-15 minutes later to pick up the burrito. I was hungry, so I decided to eat the burrito right away, before I got home. I found a newspaper stand on Milwaukee Av. about one block north of the restaurant, right bu the US Bank. I opened up the burrito, and started eating it. After about 3 or 4 bites, I started to feel sick to my stomach, like I was going to throw up. I tossed what was left of the burrito (about half) in the trash, and I almost immediately started vomiting on the Milwaukee Av. sidewalk. I threw up for about 3-4 minutes before I was able to compose myself. I wanted to get my money back from the burrito that made me sick, so I walked back to the restaurant and asked for my money back. The server who greeted me said that he would talk with the manager on duty. The man he spoke to is the person who served me the food; he's usually the one who handles the carryout transaction when I've picked up in the past, which has been quite a few times. He's seen me before; I usually tip at least $1 on carryout. They spoke to each other in Spanish, and then they said that they'd start a new order, and they instructed the cook to make a new burrito for me. When I realized that they were making a new one instead of giving me my $11.50 back, I told the cook to stop cooking it, and I asked the servers to give me my money back instead. I just are a burrito that made me sick; why would I want you to make me another one? I just wanted my money back so I could leave and go home, as I had company waiting for me. Both servers acted like I was lying, like I was making up a story so I could get a free meal. The manager said that the other customers in the restaurant ate the same chicken, so he doesn't see how I could have gotten sick. That was offensive to me. The restaurant served me a burrito that immediately got me sick, and then when I asked for my money back, they gave me a hard time about it, and talked to me like I was a liar. I had to repeatedly ask for my money back, and when the manager finally did give me my money back, he gave me $10.50, which was a dollar short. I didn't realize this until I left, and I then I walked back in to get my other $1. I know that might sound petty, but how are you going to serve me food that makes me throw up, give me a hard time about a refund, and then short change me? I wanted my money back in full. The disgusted manager gave me the dollar back. That was when the cook got involved. He told me that he "takes it personal" that I would accuse them of getting me sick, and he said to me "I think you're lying." First of all, I never confronted the cook. I just asked the servers if they would give me my money back. I never even looked in the cook's direction. But for some reason, he wanted to challenge me. I told him that the burrito that he prepared did in fact make me sick, and that he should check himself, and the food he's serving. Then among other things, he said to me that "you're just broke," and that's why I was trying to get a refund. We got into it a bit, and then as I was walking out the door he loudly called me the N-word, and to never come back. There were customers in the restaurant that heard all of this. So let me get this straight: I patronize a restaurant repeatedly, get sick from their food, ask for a refund, get called a liar, get shortchanged, get called out by a cook and then called a nigger? Wow. All the restaurant had to do was say "we're sorry" and give me my money back. Instead, they treated me like some low-grade criminal who's trying to get over for $11.50 or a free burrito. Racism is such an ugly thing, and it's clear that I was treated this way by the staff because I'm an African-American male. The cook seems to think that's it's okay nowadays to say that word to an African-American, and I'm here to tell you that's not! He went on to yell at me that I'm not "from the hood." What does that have to do with anything? So on one hand, I'm a broke as nigga, and then on the other I'm not "hood" enough? Seems like they don't like a black man in there no matter who or what he is. It's a sad truth that no matter what we do in this world, to some people, I'm still just a "broke ass nigga..." Wow. It was bad enough that the food got me sick. But the experience got worse and worse. The servers treated me poorly enough, but the cook was completely out of line. If he truly took me getting sick personally, then he should have taken better care of the food, because made me throw up right there on Milwaukee Av. To call me a liar to my face was completely disrespectful as a customer, and for him to address me as a nigger was completely disrespectful to me as a man. Needless to say, I will never support this place or any other businesses from this group. read more

The service here was fantastic; the staff was extremely attentive and the food was ready unbelievably quickly. I had the nopales, fish, chicken mole, and steak tacos, jicama salad, and margaritas, and was extremely happy with all of it. The quality and variety of the food are both great, and the atmosphere is nice for a casual date or just a pleasant outing. I was highly impressed and plan to make regular visits to this place from now on. Also, the price of the cocktails might seem a bit steep for a small taco place ($8-10 each), but the portions are BIG and the quality/strength does not disappoint. I have been here several times and have always been treated as family and with a smile. It's quaint and the food is amazing!! You can tell they take pride in everything they make. I went there a little while ago with my boyfriend (who is pretty picky) he ordered the lengua tacos and has not stop raving about them since! So we went another day for lunch and ended up sitting there watching the game, went for a beer run, ate dinner and hung out until almost closing. We were so incredibly comfortable and had so much fun! One of the best experiences! The guys are so friendly and had great recommendations. My favorites are the cochinita torta, the arabe torta, and the nachos interesting ingredients but they work so well! Friendly staff, great food and ambiance. In conclusion a definite must try! I came here on a whim while visiting a good friend in Logan Squre. We popped into here and were absolutely blown away by the tacos. On my first visit, I had the Papa y Epazote tacos (fried mashed potato tacos), and the Nopales tacos (sautéed cactus), which I'd never seen before at a regular taqueria. They were incredible! Perfectly fried, no burning or charring, like I see at other places. Since then, I've been back a handful of times, and the food speaks for itself. It's a little bit more expensive than other nearby taquerias, but it's worth it once you try the Cochinita Pibil tacos or torta. I'll admit the decor is a little strange. It's got some mythos involving two Luchadors named El Santo and The Blue Devil that I failed to ask about, but perhaps I will next time. read more

Tacos Tequilas is walking distance from my place, and being a lazy Chicagoan I have visited their location frequently. I love the arracherra tacos, just douse me in lime juice and call it a day. My biggest gripe is they have changed their policy from single taco to 2 per order, which has made my indecisive personality work for it. Walked in with some friends after a few hours of drinking and we were in need for some good food. We had never been here but what a find. It didn't seem to pick up until after 9 which is a good sign in my book. The chips and salsa were fresh and delicous. We all got different things and everyone loved their meal. My tacos were perfection. Drinks are a tad pricy but I had a great margarita. We ended with some hot churros and walked out happy and full and ready for bed. The milanesa torta was terrible, I couldn't even finish it and I was starving all day, you'd think I'd eat it just because but it was so unsatisfying I stopped halfway, couldn't force it anymore. I saw a video on Facebook advertising this restaurant. From the video it looked good and very authentic. The location itself for this restaurant is not the best, there is literally no parking anywhere, I had to park a couple streets down. It is a very small restaurant, my friends and I found ourselves half in half out of the restaurant since there was a couple ppl in front of us and this was in mid January in the MIDWEST.. it was terrible. Finally we got seated, it took our server over 30minutes to get to us with water. The chairs were uncomfortable and very close to eachother. The decor was nice to look at to distract yourself from the entire experience.. the food was ok, nothing stood out too much. I personally thought the entire menu is overpriced, they sell their tacos in pairs (2) so I had to order 4 tacos which rounded it to $11 for 4 tacos.. rice sold separately. I just needed a few tacos to keep me going at Moe's for a few more hours, I did not expect to experience such a gem of a restaurant. The space is cozy but with room for a small bar (I chose the Margarita Bomber, very wise) and nice decor. The staff was friendly and quick, and the tacos rank among the best I've ever had. I will never have to go through the fuss of trying to eat at Big Star again. Their extraordinary renditions of more traditional recipes were completely packed with flavor. They got these al pastor tacos with some pickled onions all up top . . . . damn. The friendly owner (I am guessing) was happy to rap with us on the recipes and prep secrets (read: 8 hour slow cooked meats for a big flavor payoff) and was also kind enough to let us try the cactus taco free of charge since none of our party had had anything like it before. I really enjoy this place! Great taco selection as well as the other food on the menu. Their steak is phenomenal! Being a Mexican place in Avondale they do have some competition but, in addition to the food, I feel the atmosphere really sets this place apart. I think what really stood out to me with this place was the quality of their margaritas. I've never been a margarita guy in my life but my first time in there I figured "Why not?" I brought my cousin here for her birthday on a late Friday night and we were seated immediately at the bar. It's a nice and cozy intimate restaurant setting and the food and drinks are amazing! The guacamole is made fresh and is so flavorful while the steak tacos, rice and beans I ordered were extremely delicious and we didn't have to wait long to be served. If you're into margaritas, you'll love the selections they offer. I tried a frozen strawberry margarita (delish) and we ordered a pitcher of the house margarita which was equally good. I'm not sure if I was actually full when I left here, or if I was just so put off by the bad food that the idea of eating anything else after seemed like a bad one. Cute place. It's small and the decor is simple, but the colors are bright and I taught myself Spanish. Ok, I only taught myself one word I didn't know, and I don't even remember said word now, but still. Service was fine. In fact, they were very nice. The food is where this place falls short. I love queso fundido, and over time I have grown to enjoy chorizo. Tacos Tequilas' queso fundido tasted off. I ate one tortilla with some and I was done. For my three tacos I chose the cochinita pibil, arrachera and rajas poblanos. I took one, maybe two bites before giving it away. Like the queso fundido, something was seriously lacking flavor wise. The cochinita pibil was good, but my favorite ended up being the arrachera. I also took a bite of their mole taco and almost spit it out. Heavy on the cinnamon would be an understatement. I've never put a spoonful of cinnamon in my mouth (let alone tried to swallow it, because I'm not a teenager), but I imagine it would be comparable to doing so. Their salsa was really good. They don't give you a lot, but they'll bring out more no problem. I like their rice, as it was kind of that sticky/mushy type. You either love that or hate it, but by the time the rice came out, I was pretty much done eating and wanting to go. What. Just. Happened...? Ok, so for some weird reason this place has a good yelp rating. And when I saw the Groupon for this place, I thought it was a no brainer to try it out... WRONG. WARNING: DO NOT GO HERE... GO TO L'PATRON DOWN THE STREET. (It's 1 mile away, but I'd rather crawl there then eat here again.) The (numerous) LOWLIGHTS- ::Price:: First off, EVERYTHING except the tacos is overpriced for Mexican food. $9 for a torta? $6 for a tiny side of guac? We asked for extra limes and they wanted to charge $1?? (Seriously, even Chipotle's guac serving size rivals the one they give and is wayy better.) ::Food:: BELOW average. Nothing was seasoned, I actually had to get up to ask our server for salt (see service complaints below). We tried 6 different tacos and the Arabe Torta. I felt like I was Snow White being mugged by the Seven Dwarves. The Steak? Overcooked, bland, and a disgrace to cows everywhere. The Pastor? It had a pineapple start, then... it felt like chewing over-cooked straw. The Cochinita Pibil? Decent, but still under-seasoned. The salsa? Weird. The habenero one tastes like spicy gasoline, and the arbol was like playing tennis with baseball bats. Just weird. ::Service:: Or the lack of service. My girlfriend and I sat outside and we were the ONLY people out on the sidewalk. The server came out and dropped off water and menus. We looked it over, and then he came out with chips/salsa and took our order. Then they dropped off the food without ever asking us one question. I had to get up to ask him for limes... and our server said "oh we charge $1 for limes." What. Next time I'll just go to the Mexican Grocery next door and buy my own... Then we ate about half our meal and realized everything was under seasoned... there was NO check-up from the server, so I got up again (WE WERE THE ONLY ONES OUTSIDE) and I had to ask for salt and pepper to try and salvage the plates of blandness. We FINISHED eating, and another couple finally sat down outside. The waiter was about to walk by until my girlfriend flagged him down. THEN the waiter had the nerve to ask "is everything ok?" (This was after about 30 minutes since his last appearance.) I barely respond. "We are done... can I get a leftover box and the check." To make it even worse, the guy (can't even label him server anymore) comes out, brings a to-go box opens it up and tosses the plastic bag on the table. Then he walks away with the check and my credit card without saying one word. Pretty much it seemed like he was going to pack up my leftovers but then he saw my credit card and grabbed it to walk away... At least say "here you go." or "is this ready?" But NOTHING. The experience was a rushed silent movie mixed with bland food. **I wrote a complaint on the receipt and only tipped 6%. I am not afraid to publicize this - because I used to be a server, and this was despicable to all the good-hard-working servers out there. Tacos Tequilas: Overpriced. Tasteless. Inattentive.
