I showed the man my Groupon and no questions asked, he went and got us our margaritas and brought the chips and guac/salsa. Salsa was pretty spicy but guac was amazing!! Margarita was very good too! Wished I lived closer, I would go every week! For my birthday I was not sure where to go and wanted a place where I knew everyone would enjoy their meal and have awesome drinks, Tacos Tequilas fit the bill! The only problem is that I never remember to take photos of the food prior to gobbling it all up! My vegetarian favorite is the enchiladas indigenas...WOW, talk about flavor explosion! Filled with mashed potato and wild mushrooms/cheese in a super savory roasted tomatillo and guajillo sauce. This is the type of dish that I crave! The guacamole is fresh, nicely seasoned and chips and salsa are good although I wish it was more like a lime and cilantro type of salsa. Both times I have to have the Chamoy Margarita. Super tangy with just the right amount of spice! Needs more tequila imo, wished it packed more of a punch but definitely fresh and anything with chamoy and tajin-rimmed is my type of drink! For dessert, I have enjoyed the churros which were sweet and not oily. I also recommend the crepas con cajeta!! So yummy, reminds me of childhood as I poured cajeta on eveything! I also loved the addition of plantains which are so tasty and sweet when caramelized. The servers are very good at their job although don't seem very friendly or chatty, they are fast and have always gotten our orders right and very tentative to refilling glasses/plates. Decor is festive and very colorful. Great pictures of iconic stars of film, tv and music on one wall. Loteria art on other wall. The tv next to the bar was playing music videos and loved the music playing. It is a small place, probably less than 10 tables and street parking. I ordered a dish that turned out to have an ingredient (tree nuts) that I'm allergic to. Despite nut allergies being commonplace and potentially serious, this ingredient was not mentioned in the menu. I politely asked the server if it we're possible to remove the nuts from the dish, and he yelled at me, loud enough for the surrounding tables to hear. Due to not wanting to make a scene (in front of the co-workers I was dining with as well as the other patrons of the restaurant), I decided to accept the dish and not eat it. Having a food allergy is not something I can control. There were no indications of the menu that tree nuts we're present, and the server didn't mention it when taking my order. I had also done a quick Google search of the dish (going beyond reasonable precautions), and a glance of the search results didn't indicate that the dish contained nuts. It was inappropriate of the server to yell at me and shame me into accepting a dish that I couldn't eat. I was able to nibble on the bits of the dish that didn't contain any nuts, mainly the outer edges of the scoops of rice and beans - those were mediocre (and overpriced). There are nicer places in the area that have better food, cost less, and won't shame you for having food allergies. read more

Ordered delivery from here today - not great. Here's a breakdown of our order and what we thought. Empanadas - inedible. The outside was soggy from sitting in soupy salsa. Filled with cheese and what I would assume is frozen corn, green beans, and carrots with cheese. The Styrofoam they were packaged in was melted from the heat - nothing like a little melted Styrofoam to go with your food, am I right? We each had one bite and couldn't eat any more. Plantains - probably the best part of the meal, but again served with a side of melted Styrofoam... Pico de gallo - tasted like old tomatoes. Two or three small bits of cilantro but quite about of chopped up lettuce which seemed odd. Again had one or two bites and threw the rest away. Chicken mole taco - tasted good but the tortilla was soggy and fell apart. Tacos al pastor - decent but not great. Meat tasted old but wasn't terrible. Cochinita pibil taco - roasted pork and picked red onions. Pretty good. Choriqueso taco - chorizo and cream. Had a kind of weird taste but was edible. Arrachera taco - skirt steak. Again had a weird taste, maybe old meat? Not great. The order was prepared pretty quickly and delivered on time. Overall would definitely not recommend and won't order from here again, especially with so many good taco joints in the area. If you have a bucket list of tacos to try around the city, then Tacos Tequilas needs to be on your list. The reason why you may have not heard of Tacos Tequilas is because it's not a taco joint - it's a full restaurant with entrees that elevate Mexican cuisine. The tacos are elevated indeed which is why two come in a single order. Order the choriqueso taco with onions and cilantro with lime and you won't be disappointed. It's a chorizo topped with crema and cotija cheese. It's not the cheesy queso fondido that you might be expecting but it's still delicious. Instead, it's a salty seasoned pork taco with a rich creamy aftertaste. I'll have to come back and try more items off their menu. read more

When he suggested we find a new place to try in the Logan Square-ish area, I remembered bookmarking Tacos Tequilas. We've been to Moe's bar a number of times and never noticed Tacos Tequilas. About just as many times, we've ambled down to El Ranchito for a late night bite, passing the conspicuous red awnings and cute little patio, yet somehow missing TT. So, as we approached TT, we practically crawled down Milwaukee to find it. That strategy worked in our favor when a domestic dispute literally flung itself into the middle of the street and right in front of my car. We popped into Tacos Tequilas for an early dinner, so it wasn't surprising to see only one other table occupied. The space is colorful, with old hispanic movies broadcast on one wall and notable Mexican actors and artists and performers peppering another. We each ordered three tacos; he got two arrachera and a mole (chicken) and I got a papa y epazote, rajas poblanos, and nopales - all veggie-friendly options. While we awaited our food, we were given chips and salsa to nosh on; the salsa was good, but the chips - while edible - were a bit stale. When our food arrived, we were given bottles of their habanero tomatillo and chile de arbol salsas, both of which were excellent. The papa taco, stuffed with mashed potatoes, is actually more like a taquito and was my favorite of the three. Pleased with our meals, we both felt like we could eat another taco, but thought the better of it; I kind of wish we threw caution and waistlines to the wind because the tilapia taco sounded pretty great too. The steak tacos (Arrachera) were divine. Everything you could want in a steak taco. And the fish tacos were not MY favorite, but my friend liked them enough. I was in town searching for good tamales. Came across this place. This place has good ambience...on a modern side. Cute little place. Has a little bar seating 6 comfortably. 8 will be to cramped. So I ordered a Mezcal Marg., chicken tamales, and "Tripita" tacos. Mezcal Margarita was good, just a little bit sweeter than I expected. Chicken tamales were okay. Nothing stood out. I like my tamales very moist. And the Tripita tacos, which was supposed to be chopped beef tripe, was a pleasant surprise for me. The reason being it wasn't tripe but pork intestine. And I do enjoy both beef tripe and pork intestine. The intestine was very, very tender/creamy. With a little lime and sauce, I devoured them in a minute. Service was great. Price was reasonable. I came here about a week ago with some friends and it was quite the trek from the southside. However I can honestly say it was well worth it. The space is quaint but it's well lit and colorful. There is a wall full of influential Latin figures. The service is pretty good our waiter was polite and helpful. He was able to explain menu items fully. The food we ordered came out quickly and was appealing to the eye. We ordered three types of tacos: el pastor, chorizo and steak. All were amazing! The chorizo was a bit salty but still very good. Loved this cool cozy spot!! Nice to see a good taco joint in the Avondale area. Met with a friend there for dinner and we started off with the queso fundido appetizer and it was a good portion for 2 people to share. We both ordered 3 tacos each...I had the choriqueso, cochinita pibil, and the al pastor taco and they were all good!! The cochinita pibil had the purple onion and everything. The thing that amazed me the most were the salsas. They are spicy and very tasty which I truly loved. The salsas just complimented the tacos perfectly. My friend ordered the steak taco, cochinita pibil, and al pastor and she enjoyed all of them as well. We started off drinking a margarita but after one we decided to get the pitcher of the mezcal margarita :D The waiter was very attentive with us and since he noticed we were chit chatting away drinking our pitcher of margaritas he even brought us a side of chips on the house. He kept coming back to our table from time to time and even had small talk with us a few times. I came to know of this spot via friends with a Groupon. Since that dinner I've been back a couple times, mostly, for drinky drinks and this specific entree I love finding at Mex joints. Molcajete surtido it's a lava bowl filled with skirt steak, chicken, chorizo, Panela cheese, grilled cactus, onions and salsa rustica. On the side they add on handmade tortillas to make tacos or for dipping. Different restaurants will offer different meats in it and I've seen these lava bowls in many sizes. At TT their bowl is on the smaller side with ample quantity to feed roughly two people for about twenty three dollars with tax. If you like meats and gravy, it's worth a go. Pricing and quality of food is pretty good. I've never found their menu to be all too exciting to order off of, a newer or bolder look could garnish more attention. It's usually when I visit Yelp and read through reviews, I find other items I should have ordered. It's funny to me that many of their taco offerings almost exactly match the names found on another menu elsewhere in the city at a destination far more popular & tasty. NOT talking about the typical taco names. Main differences are style of preparation, ingredients, taste and it's got to be said, location. On this stretch of Milwaukee there isn't much to see. It's dusty, with a low body count of sidewalk traffic. Often a time I've people watched some oddities on the street being that with every one of my visits its been warm and I've sat with my party outside in their sidewalk seating area. Above I mentioned the molcajete as a must try. Their tacos and a few of their appetizers are tasty as well. Platters / dinners are where the taste can be found and if you need some extra spice; request the salsa Verde. It's usually spicy and made fresh weekly. read more

Let me preface this by saying if I was only reviewing the margaritas, food, and service, it would definitely be five stars. J and I had a Groupon for a meal for two--six tacos, chips and guacamole and salsa, and two house margaritas. Everything was fantastic! The tacos are small but loaded. We tried the nopales, lengua, and pescado, and were pleased with them. The drinks are strong and the guacamole fresh and creamy. Put that all together with a comfortable dining room and fast/friendly service and it would be a place we would definitely revisit. However, there are two things that made me deduct two stars and make me reconsider ever going again. First is the fact that you can't order six different tacos. We wanted to try three different meats and three vegetarian, but that's not allowed. No, you have to order two of each, or six of one kind, or four of one kind and two of another. This is why I don't go to fancy taco places. For $2.75 each, why can't I get six different ones? It's not like they are making the fillings by scratch after you order. Second, the Groupon cost us $20.00, and we both said that the quality and quantity made that a really good deal. Then came the bill, and it was $55.00 (including tax)! For six small tacos, chips and guacamole and salsa, and two house margaritas! With the tip that came to $65.00. Sure, with the Groupon it was $35.00, but without it...sorry, but that is way too much to pay on a regular basis, albeit for a very good meal. We're talking tacos here, folks. You decide. read more

Despite some of the poor reviews i see here, I like this place. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa. I thought the salsa was slightly sweet but delicious and the kick to it was perfect. The tacos were small ($2.25/taco), but they were flavorful in their own way with the different sauces and garnishes they use. Out of all the tacos we ordered, we loved the Tinga de Pollo, Pastor, Choriqueso and Cochinita Pibil the most. My son loved the pescado without the pico de gallo as it wasn't spicy. Sub-standard Mexican food. After entering, the staff greeted us and seated us promptly. Very friendly service and they were quick to refill drinks without us having to ask. The atmosphere is very nice as well. A mural of photos of famous Latinos on one wall and cards from La Lotería lined the other. Unfortunately, the food here was not good. I ordered the taco dinner for around 11.95 and it came with 3 lengua street tacos, nicely presented rice, and beans. The presentation of the plate was great, however, the lengua was the worst I've had in my life. The lengua was dry and tough. It was very disappointing. My friend ordered the super nachos and advised me they were not good either. I live in San Diego and eat Mexican food regularly there and in Tijuana. I came here on a Friday night, and was surprised that there was no wait! We sat outside because it was a nice night, and service was super attentive to us. We ordered chips and salsa to start, and it was brought out literally like a minute after we ordered. I got the pollo, pastor, and pescado tacos. The pescado taco was ok, I think there needed to be more of a kick to it. The pastor was my favorite of the three, with the way it was marinated and how flavorful it was. The chicken taco was also great! They wrap their tacos in double tortillas, but I took one off (because carbs lol) and they actually stayed together still.
