I took several close-up photographs of exactly what I found. I immediately handed the shaker to our waitress and explained what I had discovered. Her response was simply, "Thanks." She took the shaker away, but there was no apology, no explanation, no manager who came over to speak with us, and no real acknowledgment that I had already consumed food using salt from that container. The restaurant was not particularly busy at the time, which made the lack of response even more surprising. I understand that things can occasionally be missed in any restaurant. I'm not expecting perfection. But when something involving cleanliness or food safety is brought to a restaurant's attention, how the restaurant responds matters enormously. In this case, the response concerns me almost as much as what I found in the shaker. I left feeling genuinely grossed out, and unfortunately, the way the situation was handled has not encouraged me to return and eat there again. I know Cat's Caboose is a very popular restaurant. I'm also realistic enough to know that losing my business or receiving one negative review probably isn't going to have a significant impact on them. That really isn't why I'm sharing this.
