It makes me sad to share this experience, but I feel it's necessary since I was so shocked by this situation. My husband and I live in downtown Chicago, but have been driving over an hour each way to get alterations done by Monica for years. He lived in Downers Grove many years ago and was so impressed with Monica's work that he has continued to use her for alterations even after moving to Chicago. When we got engaged and I found my wedding dress, we made the commute and brought it to Monica. My dress was a size 2 and I am typically a size 0 or 1, so not much was needed. She took about an inch off the bottom and an inch off the waist. Nothing more. My dress was very simple, no beading, tulle, gems, lace and no long extravagant train. My dress cost $240 and I informed Monica of this. On her website it said "wedding alterations starting at $300." My dress did not need very much since it fit me relatively well. If I was going to pay the full $300 I told Monica I would just go to a dry cleaners by my house that was cheaper and closer. She assured me that since my dress needed such little work and it wasn't an expensive dress, she would definitely not charge me $300. Fast forward to the day my dress was finished, I try it on and then go to the cash register to pay and she rings me up for $290. I was so angry and shocked by this since she clearly deceived me just to secure my business. I told her this is not what she promised me at all and I was livid that she was trying to rip me off. She looked upset and changed the price to $250. I was so angry at this point that I just paid for the alterations at $250 and left. I purchased my dress for $240 and she charged me $250 for simple alterations. Absolutely crazy. She very much took advantage of me because I was getting married and I obviously needed to leave with my dress that day. I was expecting to pay about $150 for the alterations she did because they were so minimal. My fiancé and I will not be using her for alterations ever again. read more

Monica is great! I first used her services on a pair of jeans in the summer of '14 and have since had numerous work slacks and dress shirts taken in, casual pants hemmed, and a few sport coats taken in. She has a great eye for how clothes are supposed to be tailored to your body. Her quality of work is wonderful, she is always spot on with her turn-around times, and the pricing is great. We "get what we pay for" and Monica certainly does a great job! Quick example: I needed a new pair of casual pants hemmed close to Christmas. Since I had not washed them yet she kept some added length to prepare for some potential shrinking after washing & drying. Problem was, the pants never shrank (good problem I suppose)! I noticed the other clothes on the rack that she was working on and there was a lot of nice wedding dress and evening gowns. Totally disappointed and surprised by the many positive reviews. I came here with a new suit to get the hem done. The person who measured my pants never asked me how did I wanted it or if I had any preference, she just took charge of the "operations" and decided without asking. Not surprisingly when I went back and tried the pants on, I found out they they are too short and they have just been "cut" horizontally. The lady also pushed a lot to modify the jacket even if there was clearly no need to do that. I do not reccomend this shop at all, no customer service and no good service. read more

This past year I have used Monica for tailoring half of my closet because I've lost 43 lbs. She was able to work her magic on getting some plus sizes down to medium or size 8. The work of her and her seamstresses is impeccable. They are perfectionists. Today, I brought in 6 items and Monica was feeling under the weather so I was attended to by one of her sweet staff. Aza did a great job making sure I was completely happy with the downsizing of my dresses and pants. I am so happy that a couple of my fav cocktail dresses are able to be altered. This summer they altered a dress that was all sequined, no fabric showing, and I couldn't believe that the dress came out so perfectly! That was one very tough alteration. Monica's shop is very clean and decorated so nicely. There are multiple dressing rooms for a customer to change into their clothes that need alterations. Monica is amazing. This was my first time coming to her and I was, of course, in a jam. I'd waited too long to get my dress altered and needed it super taken in in the bust, let out a little in the hips (such is my life, ugh). I was a little bit panicked as it was a month before the wedding. My best friend's wedding. I have to look good. So I walk in and Monica sees me, sees my dress, and points me to a dressing room. I change into the dress and awkwardly shuffle out. She puts me on a weird pedestal thing, takes some measurements, pins some spots, and off I go to change again. She never once panicked, or judged, or rolled her eyes at my sheer terror of looking like I wore a burlap bag to a wedding. Once I came back out, she gave me a ticket for my dress, and told me to return in one week. ONE WEEK?! You're gonna fix this nightmare in ONE week?! I was skeptical but hopeful. Fast forward one week and I return, anxiously ready to try on my dress. Monica recognizes me right away, grabs my dress and sends me to a different room to change. I hold my breath, lose my eyes, and... THE DRESS FITS EVERYWHERE. And not just fits, but dare I say - it kinda looks good?! I suddenly had a shape again when she took in the bust. And I could breathe and sit with a little extra room in the hip. SO EXCITING. I walked out, she reviewed it, fussed with the belt a bit, and declared it done. She could have done - and charged me for - a ton more work, but chose not to, since "I'm only going to wear it once." And she's right! I would have paid damn near anything she asked me to for the sheer joy of being able to wear this dress without looking like a human inner tube, but the alterations were only $75. WHAT. That's insane. Good insane. I can't believe it. I think I was in the building a total of 20 minutes, but also: the place is bright and clean, there are ladies behind sewing machines everywhere, and the dressing rooms are super cute and classy. I bought a dress for my daughter's wedding and honestly spent too much money on it. The bridal place said they couldn't alter it in time for the wedding, so I brought it home (making it now unreturnable) and figured I'd bring it to Monica for alterations as we'd used her years ago for an alteration and been very happy. I tried the dress on at home and suffered serious buyer's remorse. The dress wasn't that comfortable and didn't quite look right on me. But I'd spent all that money!! What was I thinking?? Took the dress to Monica intending to just have her hem it. She stood back, looked me over in the dress and pointed out several issues that absolutely NAILED what was bothering me! The neckline needed to be pulled up, it needed straps, and of course needed that hem. She did all of the above and more (moving some of the lace to strategically fill in some sparse spots on the sleeves) in just over a week and transformed the dress into a comfortable, stylish, and cute dress for me! Her and her team completely re-did my dress, re-stitched my belt, made the most perfect adjustments and even re-did my entire bustle style to match the look of the dress. They fit wonderfully after Monicas made alterations. the shop is nice and clean and they were ready for pickup promptly despite needing fairly major changes. Beware of using Monica for alterations! My husband took a tux to here to be altered. She altered the sleeves two different lengths. When my husband took the tux back she didn't apologize just said she would fix. My husband returns later to pick it up and she charges him $30 more. She then argued with him that she didn't alter the sleeves in the first place. She marked the sleeves when he tried it on. This tux was brought in because the sleeves were too long. I have a photo from the first time he wore it and clearly the sleeves are too long. My husband ended up paying the extra $30 because he needed the tux for tomorrow and she refused to hand it over unless he paid. I want to point out this is the second time she has messed up an alteration for him. We will no longer use her. I recommend anyone looking for alterations to find someone else. I've been waiting to write this review, mainly because there's still a good amount of work that Monica will be doing for me over the next couple of months, but I just simply cannot imagine that I'm going to be anything less than very happy. I would first like to try and gain a little sympathy from the reader, who should really try to I imagine what it's like to be a 5'2'' male who weighs less than a hundred pounds and who really doesn't want to buy kids' clothes. I know when I buy an article of clothing, even if I get the smallest size made, that it's going to be far too large for me to wear off the rack; when I look at a piece of clothing I have to ask myself "how much work needs to be done on this?" It's a cost that I have to factor into everything I buy. There are a few stores where I can get a shirt that will only need to have the sleeves shortened, maybe even slimmed, but that's a rarity; usually, the shirt has to basically be remade--same deal for pants. Over the years, as I've bought articles of clothing, I've had them tailored almost exclusively at a 'sastreria' in Aurora--and I feel really awful that I probably won't be going to that gentleman anymore, but I'm not going to criticize him or his work here; all I'm going to do is state the fact that after several years of having one person tailor almost everything I own--and paying unbelievably low prices--I am so impressed with Monica that the decision to switch to her was so easy that I feel a little guilty about it. I am not the most fashionable person in the world, and, despite what my friends and family think, I do not enjoy frivolously spending money on clothes. I keep the clothes I buy for YEARS, and I wear them until they are no longer in an acceptable state for public viewing, but every few years or so I really clean my closet out and get rid of a lot of things. Just a few months ago I got rid of a LOT of clothes, which means that I have to go and buy practically an entirely new wardrobe--which I'll admit is pretty fun--but that also means that I'm going to have to shell out anywhere between three and four hundred dollars to have those clothes tailored. There's nothing worse than hoping that the shirt or pair of pants you dropped off will be tailored well; after having several shirts and pairs of pants tailored here, I no longer have that worry. I cannot stress enough how great it feels to know that Monica's work will far exceed my expectations. I have had shirts, pants, jeans, and even a suit jacket tailored here, and I could not be happier with the results. Again, I'm not trying to criticize anyone else here, but after my experiences with a couple of tailors, there were a couple of things about Monica that I really liked: 1) Monica wants you to look good, wants your clothes to look good on you, and she makes suggestions but also asks your opinion, and 2) she actually invites/encourages you to try on the clothes to make sure that they fit well and that you're happy with them, but she also takes the chance to inspect you herself! to make sure that SHE'S happy with her work! I swear to god sometimes I want to hug her, but I've restrained myself so far, mainly because she's quite tall and the logistics of trying to hug someone that much taller than you is difficult. I don't think I could recommend Monica highly enough, and I'm pretty sure I've told just about everyone I know about her, so I'm not sure what else I can say here. The one thing I can't really comment on too much is price; she's more expensive than the guy I used to go to, but I often wondered how that gentleman could charge what he does and still stay open! I've gone to another tailor in Aurora, and I would say that her prices and Monica's were comparable, which is surprising when you consider that Monica's store is located in Naperville. What I can say about Monica's work is that is WELL worth what you pay. So if you have clothes you want tailored and you--maybe because of past experiences or because of a lack of experience--are a little nervous about it, don't be! Get yourself and your ill-fitting clothes over to Monica and I guarantee you'll be happy and worry-free. A few things right out of the gate: I am a cheapskate. I am a dude. I have no fashion sense. So with my tail between my legs, I brought her a suit and said I needed to look good. She tailored it so well I actually felt like a different person. i couldn't believe the difference that good tailoring can make to "off the rack" stuff. Im 6 ft and 170 lbs. and between small and medium sizes. Not only was her work perfect, but she got it done on short notice and the cost was a great investment. Then, she respectfullly asked about the shopping I had in mind and made a great recommendation for someone of my size. She explained my sizing---she understands the various shirt makers and how they "cut" on men of different builds. I went to "Deans" in this case and asked for a certain sales man and a certain maker. She was 100% right on the money, and I got amazing shirts that fit ooooohhhh so perfectly for a good price. This bonus recommendation was so cool......now im just babbling, but get this: The final outfit I put together with all Monica's help? Was worn on RODEO DRIVE in Beverly hills. I went to Villa Blanca, one of the hottest restaraunts there, and strutted around on Wilshire blvd. just before arriving at our destination. I'll just tell you; this tailored outfit really made me feel and look like a big-shot. Fast Forward to today: Im now bringing her my other quality garments (RUNNING back into her shop tomorrow!!!!) that I stopped wearing due to awkward sizing; and shes going to tailor them, as well. I relied on Yelp to find her, now I hope some other oaf will figure out how to stop looking good.........and turn it into GREAT. Clothes make the man. I am learning,I am learning, ladies.! read more
