The food is always phenomenal but in this instance, specifically David our server made for an elevated experience that is going to be tough to top next time! Absolute pleasure and great energy, but now onto the food. If you go here you must have the CRISPY BRUSSELS. I have never been anywhere that competes to this, I mean if there's only one thing you order make it 5 of these. The crispy rice and ribeye are right there neck and neck, and then hands down the tastiest protein you're going to find is the PORK BELLY. I just got back from Texas where I had the best bacon burnt ends I've ever had in my life, and these are seriously right up there with them. Consistency is extremely important to me and im sooo disappointed that after having a fantastic experience here a few months ago, i had a really bad experience here yesterday... and it was my birthday... My husband and I came here for his birthday in March and had such a great time. The service, food, and ambiance were great. The staff was aware of his birthday and everything. I made a reservation for my birthday here last night, I marked that it was for a birthday in the reservation, but no one was aware, that's for sure. Our server was nice and accommodating, but I felt like I was waiting for service a lot. The food was ehh this time, some of the items we ordered again did not taste the same this time around. We tried the popcorn shrimp and it was the worst we've ever had anywhere, it tasted like burnt oil, they were hot but not really crispy, and the sauce left such a bad after taste. What's crazy is they had some shiitake mushrooms mixed into the dish and that was actually really good. I ordered a lychee martini and it was again the worst I've ever had, but I got a lemon drop afterwards and it was good! I don't know if this is my place and I feel bad mentioning this but I feel like it's necessary for the restaurant to reach its max potential - the women servers are dressed so unprofessional, I was very surprised. Some of them look like they just woke up, threw on clothes and came to work; there was one that wore spanks/shorts that practically looked like underwear; some dressed like they work at a diner. There was a manager there, dressed in a suit and he was going around the restaurant, food runners were doing great and dressed appropriately, hostesses were great as well, only issue was the female servers. We came here on Christmas Eve (my way around my Mom's rule about the feast of the seven fishes), so it was a little slower than usual. There were hints of the party atmosphere that I've read in other reviews, so I can definitely how this can be a fun place for people to party by the bar. There even seemed to be a bouncer outside as it got closer to 8. First off, our server was so amazingly attentive. Knowledgeable about all of the food, had recommendations and always made sure our sake was chilled and refilled. There were a lot of varied menu items. We stuck to the crispy rices (both salmon and avocado....bonus points for having options other than the traditional spicy tuna) and they were both delicious. Had a the chef's sampler platter and some of nigiri (two pieces per order). Everything was very fresh and good. Tried two rolls, the salmon truffle and the yuzu kosho. They were a little busy for me, but still good. Sake was a little expensive for a bottle, but hey it was the holidays. All and all, a pretty good time! read more

After driving by this contender on Ventura Sushi Row many times in recent years, the occasion finally came for Hey let's break routine try a new place. To start, $14 Valet but avoidable depending on the street parking. The layout and look of place is nice, kinda feels like not being in Sherman Oaks. We opted for the Premium Izakaya Feast at $125 per person while our server mentioned portions were intended for two persons to share. For starters we selected some Rolls, Garlic Edamame, Oysters, and Pork Belly Skewers. Edamame had flavor but was light on Garlic or maybe just got used to the taste of other restaurants. Spinach Salad was good, better than similar from other places. Pork Belly was nicely cooked but not standout for taste. Imagine it is better paired with the egg fried rice offered. Lobster Roll was not bad but I prefer it be Nori rather than soy paper and the creamy sauce was overpowering. The Salmon Truffle Roll was a little better but seems like Truffle was the focus on mixing the flavor of Salmon & Spicy Tuna, too much going on in the blend. We were informed the hot sake dispenser was having problems so the Hot Chocolate Sake dessert may not be available. Green Beans were good. The two sashimi dishes of Tuna & Salmon were good, but slices were thinnest possible without being like just shavings. For the price and number of courses of the omakase it was balanced. Kumamoto Oysters came as a half dozen, and all were small, no variation. Condiments were present, maybe some stronger than the others. I come from experiencing getting 2 pieces in one half shell if they are of the tiny portions. Wagyu Short Rib presented well on a hot skillet, sauce mixed up with the fat bathing an average tasting cut of meat cut in strips, still tender but melting in mouth. Since soup is not on the menu Server suggested the Tofu Mushroom Tobanyaki. Excellent flavor. Baked Crab Handroll came with Soy Paper, like a roll that was cut in 2 that could have been cut into 4 - 6 pieces, but made for a nice presentation. Taste of the Crab was good. Rice Cake Trio was delicious, even the Truffled Avocado which I generally find to be nothing special at most places. Shrimp & Bacon skewer had nice texture and flavor but again, sauce was a bit heavy and overkill. Chef''s Nigiri 5 piece selection came with some standard variety, the Salmon standing out paired with a Ginger Sesame sauce. Nigiri topping was sliced better than sashimi, long and better width. Fish tasted great. Sushi Rice was cooled down though. Seasoning was present, texture was not hardened. Not something I expected for dine in rather unavoidable when getting take out or grab and go from a deli/market. Dessert was a Butter Cake with a proper tennis ball sized scoop of Vanilla Ice cream and some sweet sliced strawberries. The cake was chewy like a semi soft cookie but delicious. The hostess was prompt and polite and the servers were accommodating and even entertaining. Busy place, with big high communal tables next to bar section while lower group tables more off to their own section. Patio tables looked nice too, several heat lamps. I think Taisho has been running well and will continue. Would like to try more and will be back. read more

Taisho stepped it up once again! We just had a fun dinner night at Taisho this past weekend on Sat. Feb 1, 2025. It was the first time our group of friends got together after the fires finally stopped burning our special beautiful city of Los Angeles. This was also my first time coming on a Saturday night...and let me tell you... Taisho was PACKED! I'm very glad I was able to solidify a reservation on my handy dandy RESY APP (thank you Platinum Amex ha). Having this app makes it rather convenient to add, change, modify, your reservation time and number of guests. I originally made my rezzie at 8 pm for 8 people, but last minute I had to add 2 more. So I called the hostess at 5 pm and she was kindly able to accommodate 10 people thankfully. So she modified the rezzie and I received an updated notification on my end via RESY APP. Upon arrival, Taisho resembled the feeling of pulling up to a Sunset Blvd nightclub or vibey lounge....and ironically, it kinda felt like that too. However, this time it is Ventura Blvd baby. The valet was bumper to bumper as I was waiting to get parked . Valet is $13 now. When I arrived to check in with the cute sweet hostess, I informed her that we might be 12 now instead of 10...oopsies. Well, she said I can try and talk to my server... maybe she can add little chairs. So after being seated, I asked Katrina my server. She was actually very nice and allowed me to charm her into adding 2 more little chairs. I would also give her winks and smiles to express my appreciation. Katrina was rather patient as she tried to manage and juggle 12 high maintenance, loud, slightly buzzed guests who can also be needy. Katrina gave us different recommendations surrounding the menu options. She was highly knowledgeable about the different items and was really on top of it! If you are in a large party, definitely order the following for everyone: Garlic Green Beans...wow wow!! Crispy Brussel Sprouts -- I might not get this next time. It was a bit too crispy and stringy for me. Short Rib Asparagus...amazing Cucumber kimchee..I'm getting this every time now for starters. Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice Spicy Salmon Crispy Rice Popcorn shrimp Albacore Onion Roll -- the truffle soy is sensational. My favorite roll at Taisho hands down. Spicy Albacore Roll Yuzu Kosho Roll At the end they accidentally brought us an extra popcorn shrimp bowl. Tom happened to also be by the table and must have overheard me....because then he came over and said "don't worry on the house." Aww Tom -- you shouldn't have. Sending hugs. Also, please don't expect to have a long conversation with any of your friends at the table as the restaurant gets EXTREMELY loud -- especially in the back. It is even harder to converse with a large table because you it is very loud so you are basically just chatting to the person next to you or directly across from you lol but I guess that happens when you are in a party of 12. I also suggested to Katrina that Taisho should think about doing "dancing night" in the back --- and allow people to mix/mingle since the music they play is already pretty lit and always playing the best hip hop dance music from early 2000s. After working in restaurants myself for over a decade, I will say that not only was the food quite amazing, what makes the dining experience really reach the next level is the staff! The host staff was warm and friendly, our server David was the best of the best with his service, food recommendations, and genuine care for our experience. Seriously next level!!! The support staff also gets top marks for their attentiveness and customer service. The restaurant is beautiful and well structured, but the only notes I would have is that the bathrooms could be updated to match the restaurant experience, and PLEASE add paper towels to the bathrooms so that I don't have to touch the bathroom lock and door handle on my way out with my freshly washed hands. I walk by Taisho nearly seven days a week, they are on one of my out and back walk routes to a local grocery store. When they first opened I certainly took notice but never felt inclined in any way to give them a try. Fast forward however many years they've been open now and I saw a post from someone there for Valentine's Day and everything looked so scrumptious I knew I needed to get here immediately. They have a great daily HH from 5p-6p. I love a HH!! We snuck in the door with literally 2-3minutes to spare on Saturday evening. I'd been home prepping Sunday Supper and then realized I was super hungry and needed to actually figure out dinner for Saturday. Service was amazing! They seated us within seconds in the bar area (love the ceiling in this area and they have TVs) and had our server right over. I'd already glanced over their HH menu and knew we pretty much wanted one of nearly everything. By we, I mean me! My bestie let me order a bunch of stuff and I think he was fine to try whatever. I had the Yuzu marg to start. Delish! After one sip I said I could have easily ordered two of these but my New Years sort of resolution was not having more than one drink in a sitting, so one it was. We shared the brussels sprouts, sooo yummy. I love brussels sprouts - these were shaved and almost tasted like they were air fried or flash fried. Very tasty. Shishito peppers are another one of my fav go to item if they are on a menu. You can rarely go wrong with them. Taisho's were very tasty. Tuna Crispy Rice, another one of my fav items. I love these. I will say I love Sushi Notes better. The Wagyu Gyozas were my least favorite, they seemed like something you can snag from the frozen aisle at Trader Joes. They weren't great, maybe we had the last remaining HH order of these- they were sort of sad if I'm being blatantly honest. The sauce that accompanied them however, was sooooo good. I could literally drizzle this heavenly concoction on everything. Tempura Cauliflower - OMG!!! wait, no... O M F G. Very, very yummy. Whatever this cauliflower is smothered in feels sinful it's so damn good. I could have easily eaten all of these items to myself but sharing them provided a substantial meal prior to us going to theatre following HH/dinner here. We capped it all off with the Butter Cake, that I'd spotted come to the table beside us. I don't love strawberries but in this case they were fine. The butter cake is perfection. I'm extremely particular about my ice-cream and was pleasantly surprised by the vanilla scoop atop the butter cake. Absolutely delightful. Our server was super sweet and attentive. The food runners were also friendly. I'm not sure I'll rush back but it was all tasty. Crowd is totally mixed, I was concerned this was one of those places people dress up like they're going to a night club type spots (I thought this because of the crowd at their Mexican spot across the street, where people spill out of looking like a Vegas club, totes not my style- I'm super casual) but at 6p it wasn't - just a random mix of mainly couples and a few families - really diverse, which is nice to see. I visited this restaurant for the first time on a Friday evening. Since they are busy, reservations are advised. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, its a good for date night. We had a variety of dishes: oyster, salmon truffle, a5 wagyu,fried rice, and some drinks, all of them were excellent. The service is excellent. The price is a little on the high side, but it's worth it for the quality of the food. It was our first time Taisho. And the ambiance was lovely. The crispy Brussel sprouts was the best one on menu however it was extremely greasy and would leave the taste of oil in your mouth. The Cucumber Kimchee Sunomono was good and tasty. We also tried the Kobe Black Pepper which was truly terrible, it smelled bad and left a really bad taste in our mouths. Had a girls night with my friend and it was the perfect spot. The food, the ambiance, and the service. Everything was impeccable. But the biggest shout out is to Anthony our server. He was busy with multiple tables but he was attentive, kind, and had amazing recommendations. He was on point with everything. Long overdue review. Came here in September 2023. Food was good but no where near worth the price. Food is nothing to write home about. Service was ok. One of the servers was super friendly but the rest was whatever. I liked the skewers. The lobster wagyu yaki and the seabass yaki were definitely my favs. Tried the sushi and it was very mediocre... I got the fusion cocktail since I wanted something sweet and the server recommended it. It was good! 2 stars because of the "wages/benefits/health" whatever charge they snuck into my bill. It was an extra 3% I think. This is crazy because it was snuck in along with the food. I was already paying the 20% gratuity since we were a large party so the bill was huge and the 3% snuck in charge just ruined my experience. To be fair, I dont know if they removed that charge now since I havent been back ever since. But even if removed, I'd only give a 3 stars since I do feel like you're paying premium prices for just the ambiance and not taste of food and not even a view. I recommend this place to people who dont mind spending money on "vibes" and "ambiance" and something to put on their social media. When you make a spur-of-the-moment trip to LA and have unplanned visit with old friends, of course you're going to want to enjoy a good meal together. Our friends suggested Taisho, and we're never going to turn down izakaya, although there is often quite a bit of variability in menu options and quality. But Taisho did not disappoint. Normally I delve into the food first and comment on the dining experience later, but I'll mix things up a little here. The service during our visit was outstanding and certainly made for a exceptionally pleasant meal. A special shout-out goes to our server, Sarah P, who guided us through the menu, made helpful suggestions with regard to dishes and quantity, and checked in with us frequently throughout the meal. Another person, whom I presume to be the owner, also stopped by our table to make sure that we were happy. Our food came out at a relaxed pace, and we didn't feel rushed even though the restaurant was very busy by the time we finished. Anyway, back to the regular programming. We had an early reservation (5:30) on a Saturday afternoon because we had to make our way to our hotel before going to a play later in the evening (which was the original reason for our sudden flight down from San Francisco). It hadn't gotten busy yet, but within half an hour every table was filled. We were given plenty of time to consider the multitude of choices, and with Sarah's assistance we settled on a selection of dishes and drinks. Brussels sprouts chips - unlike other Brussels sprouts dishes, these weren't whole sprouts. Rather, they peeled off the leaves and fried them in a truffle oil. Every leaf was crisp and perfect. It was a great start to the dinner. Cucumber Sunomono - the menu describes this a cucumber kimchee and so I was expecting a little more heat, but it was actually relatively mild. It seemed to be more of a pickle, but was still very much enjoyed. Yellowtail serrano sashimi - thin slices of hamachi in a yuzu sauce topped with serrano peppers. A lovely combination of sweet and heat. Avocado crispy rice - cubes of deep fried rice topped with avocado. This was just a bit of a miss for me, as the rice wasn't as crunchy as I would have expected and the avocado resembled a guacamole, which felt a little out of place here. But I will say that the avocado was very delicious. Ribeye wrapped asparagus - the asparagus spears were still crisp, not overcooked, and the ribeye was tender and easy to bite through. It's made in a soy and mirin sauce, which was a pleasant balance of salty and sweet. Miso eggplant - okay, I am not an eggplant eater. I don't like the texture. But I did try several pieces, and actually liked it, which is saying a lot for me. Tempura cauliflower - bite-sized pieces of cauliflower in a slightly spicy miso sauce. One of my favorite dishes of the meal. Kurobuta pork belly fried rice - Another meal highlight. This was a surprisingly generous dish for an izakaya restaurant. The pork belly was incredible, but you have to appreciate (and be willing to eat) a pretty fatty meat. The pork flavor was intense and the fat melted like butter in your mouth. Normally it comes with a runny egg topping, but because of some food preferences at our table it was made with scrambled eggs, so there was an additional textural element that was lost. Nevertheless, it was an excellent dish. Salmon truffle roll - a spicy tuna roll topped with salmon and truffle ponzu glaze. Personally, I would have preferred a tuna roll with intact pieces of tuna; the spicy tuna filling was chopped into pieces as is typically done. Having said that, it was still very tasty even though I would have appreciated a different texture. Various robatayaki - for lack of a better analogy, this is like Japanese shish-kebab. We tried four of their offerings. The seabass was very good with a clean flavor but was maybe left on the grill a bit too long. The Wagyu short ribs were excellent - rich in flavor and perfect in texture (which is what I'd expect for $55). The pork belly was good, but in comparison to the Kurobuta pork belly it was almost a bit of a letdown. The chicken meatball was also very good. Butter cake with ice cream and strawberries - I have to ask: does anyone actually eat this all by themselves? Not because it's large, but because it is so incredibly buttery and dense (in a good way). Seriously, I think there was a whole stick of butter in that one piece that we shared among the four of us. Normally I'm happy to eat the last bites, but I had to push this away. Whew. That was a good meal, and was exactly the right amount of food (thanks again, Sarah). If there was one criticism, it would be that they could dial back the salt just a bit in all their dishes. With a few drinks, tax, and tip, the total cost came to just over $100 per person, which was less than I had expected for a meal of this quality. Our first time at Taisho involved some memorable highlights and a few detractions from the overall positive experience. Parking: street parking, which can be tough to find in this area. They do have valet parking, which I think was around $10? We were lucky enough to find parking a block away! Seating: pretty comfy, but the first table we were seated at was super unbalanced (like place one arm on the table and a set of legs would noticeably rise). We were able to move tables, and the table was fine there, but given the nice ambiance and feel of the restaurant, it wasn't the best first impression. Service: it was pretty great! Our server was super friendly, quick, and attentive. She checked in on us and never left us waiting. My water came with a black speck on the ice at the very top, which was definitely a little off-putting, but she quickly addressed it for us. Now, for the food! -Spicy tuna crispy rice: tasty! Seasoned well, not at all fishy. The crispy rice was crunchy without being so crunchy it's hard. -Crispy brussels sprouts: think the best, crispy bits in a typical order of brussels sprouts - those individual leaves that come off during the cooking proces - but a whole little bowl of just those crispy leaves. Super tasty, quickly going from crispy with a light burst of oil to melt-in-your-mouth. If I could get a big bowl of just this, I'd be in trouble... Spicy Kurobuta Fried Rice: the pork was pretty tender and flavorful. The fried rice was ok, but not super flavorful or interesting. The runny egg was definitely overcooked - the yolk was mostly set, and the egg white was almost rubbery in texture. There was no runniness, which was tragic, given it's described as runny on the menu. -Chicken and green onion: juicy and tasty with the flavor of something grilled. -Pork belly: dangerous. It slides right off the skewer with the slightest push from your chopsticks. Why? The second you bite into it, there's a rush of liquid pork fat. It's mostly fat with a bit of meat, and it's delicious but terrifying to imagine what that does to your arteries... my partner and I shared one skewer, and it was too much for both of us (we finished it, but still...). This comes with mustard on the side, but we didn't find ourselves wanting or needing it. -Butter cake with ice cream and strawberries: amazing. It was perfectly balanced - the sweetness of the butter cake worked well with the generous serving of tart strawberries. From presentation to flavor, we loved this dessert! Overall, we thought there were some crave-worthy dishes and great service, but some of the details (i.e. wobbly/uneven table, something in the water, overcooked egg) were missed, which took away from the experience. None of the issues were super big, so we'd definitely give Taisho another shot, especially with how great most of the food was. Taisho, is a fun, buzzing energy without feeling chaotic. It felt like one of those rare spots that hits just the right balance between trendy and genuinely welcoming. We sat at a cozy corner table and just kept the dishes coming. Every bite was better than the last--super fresh sushi, perfectly crisp Brussels sprouts, and a butter cake that honestly should come with a warning. It was that good. But what really stood out was Michael, our server!! He had this calm, friendly energy that made everything feel easy. The ambience is modern Asian and there are Le labo scents in the restrooms. It was cold today so we sat indoors at a very nice corner booth. We were welcomed by the host and manager at 5 when it opened and it quickly became busy (in a good way) on a Wednesday night. Jen was our server and she was friendly, warm and attentive. We ordered spicy tuna crispy rice (so good we ordered two more), nigiri sushi, robata, salmon truffle roll, wagyu wontons, and Brussel sprouts. Everything was delicious. Was excited to try this place! Had been to Casita previously then learned they were related and wanted to check it out. Wow! The restaurant is so spacious! Didn't expect the beautiful patio out back after walking in. It's a lovely oasis out there complete with a water feature and greenery. We came for DineLA and did the pre-fixe menu. Everything was DELICIOUS. Service was okay. People were kind. I know it was DineLA so we were just rolling with it, but it did take 30min after we were done with our last course to get dessert and I had to request the check 3 times. Taisho has been a game changer for Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks & we're so lucky to have owners Paul & Christian up the game in the Valley, not only with Taisho, but with their next 2 openings- Casita, & the soon to be open BLVD Steak, all their own superb creations. I met them & had a walk-thru just before they completed renovation of the space for Taisho & I loved what they were trying to accomplish, a neighborhood spot where people could come together, enjoy a specially crafted, delicious menu in an absolute gorgeous location. You can't help but notice the detail & effort that went into the design of the space, something I really do appreciate in the restaurant game today, & their staff... always the best of the best here! They're always striving to welcome you & make sure you enjoy yourselves when there. I've been fortunate to have so many meals here & every one of them have been absolutely delicious; it's a place I trust to be adventurous in trying anything on the menu as I know I'll always have amazing food / drink. Their contemporary Japanese menu has many amazing options. My mother is Japanese so my standards are high when it comes to sushi & Taisho blows me away with every dish. Follow them on IG & you can keep up with any special events they may have- we enjoyed ringing in the New Year with them a couple NYEs ago & it was one of the best times celebrating NYE that we've ever had.
