Everything was pretty good and it reminded me of going to a chiense resturant and ordering all those dishes and sharing with people except you dont have to order everything here which is great. A few friends had made mention this is a classic spot for the $7 lunch special which includes 3 items of your choice and rice. My husband and I went here one night and while I got the special (labeled "dinner special" at that time), my husband preferred something made to order, so he got the $8 dinner which included rice, chinese broccoli, bok choy, fried egg, and grilled pork chop topped with a black pepper gravy. Oh my goodness. While I enjoyed my food (kung pao chicken, eggplant, and fish), I got so jealous of my husband's meal. Not only was it served in a big portion, but it was excellent. The pork chop was grilled perfectly. The black pepper gravy was key. I loved the greens, rice, and eggs that accompanied the meal. All that for $8? We went again a few weeks later and got the same special with salmon and beef. They were both great, but the pork chop is the highlight. There are a few great restaurants in this plaza, but this place has been around since 2001. It's very simple, no frills, and shows age. While it's probably not the cleanest or nicest restaurant I've ever been to, I'd still say it's one of my top favorites to get cheap Taiwanese food (they give huge portions too). Upon entry, you get two scoops of rice and three side dishes of your choice- these side dishes consist of a variety of meats, tofu, and vegetable dishes. They keep some of the dishes consistent every time, but there are a few that change often/every now and then, so there's always something new to try! A platter of two scoops of rice and three side dishes only cost $7! I'm also always left with leftovers, so it's great! You can also order items off their menu that are made to order! And they have a wide variety of milk teas and smoothies as well. Definitely recommend this place for cheap, authentic Taiwanese food with great portions! read more

This is the best place in DFW I've found for authentic Taiwanese breakfast (available on weekend mornings through early afternoons). My go-to items: salty soy milk (it's more of a savory soup than drink), sweet soy milk, salty Chinese donut, salty rice ball, sweet rice ball, scallion pancake with egg. My other favorite dish from the regular menu here is their pot sticker dumplings; the dipping sauce is seriously out of this world. I'll definitely be back, primarily because they were out of boba when we came!!! You might think this would be a reason to subtract a star, but the fact that they had run out of boba (despite having a nearly empty restaurant) means one thing: they make FRESH boba. That said, if you're coming for a meal, be prepared. My dining companion told me that if the door had been a plastic sheet instead of an actual door, and if the entire place had been dirtier and more poorly lit, it would have been exactly the same as a restaurant in Taiwan. That is to say that the food is VERY authentic. The atmosphere is, too. There are TVs playing Chinese stations, and a few old Asian men sitting around talking with each other like they hang out here every night. I almost felt like I was intruding, but then again I am a pasty white chick who stuck out like a sore thumb. They were perfectly friendly, though. Anyway, it's a no-frills place with very little decor. Take it for what it is. They aren't trying to be all fancy. This is authentic, homestyle, Taiwanese cooking (as verified by my Taiwanese dining companion). When you walk in (for dinner), there's a buffet staring you in the face. It's the kind of buffet that makes you debate whether or not it's worth the risk of food poisoning...but dive in anyway, because it's great stuff, especially the three-cup chicken. For just over $5 for a buffet tray with rice and three dishes, that's a damn good deal. However, we didn't stop there. We also ordered a scallion pancake (delicious, not too oily) and some potstickers (a bit too oily for me). The a-la-carte items are a bit pricier, but don't pass up trying a few of them...the steamed dumplings looked fantastic, but we didn't want to wait 20 minutes for them. You walk in and can pick three entrees with two scoops of rice, add boba for a dollar. All for under seven bucks! And please BRING CASH because this place does not accept card. There's also complementary egg drop soup in the back, although it tends to be quite salty most of the time. People don't realize that you can order a bunch of other dishes, but the options are all listed out on the wall. They make an assortment of drinks and different rice and noodle soup dishes, so you also have that to choose from if you don't wanna go cafeteria-style. And shaved ice, the traditional kind, they got that too. (Instead of fruit and condensed milk, it's more traditional toppings like red/green bean, peanuts, tapioca balls and jellies with brown sugar water.) On weekend mornings they offer Chinese-style breakfast! Soymilk (sweet or salty) with fried dough, chive pockets, seared pork buns that you dip in a jalapeno-soy sauce mixture. There's a little sheet of paper on which you fill out how many orders of whatever dish you want, hand it in, and get a number in exchange. My family sometimes comes here for breakfast since it's one of the few places in Plano that does something like that (when we can wake up early enough, that is.) The entrees are chosen in the line at the front kinda like panda express where they lay it out for you but without labels. The workers don't have the best English but don't let that deter you, all you gotta do is point at what you want. The meal comes with a combo: either Thai tea or milk tea, and if you want boba (tapioca pearls) its a dollar extra. With out boba it costs $6.25 I believe. I'm not sure how much it costs without a drink. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CASH. They are cash only! Along with your prison tray, they also have complementary egg drop soup you can get at your leisure. It was a bit salty when I was there, but my companions said it's usually better. When I got my food, I stared at it and I was like "holy crap this is a lot of food, I'm not going to be able to finish this." The texture of the boba isn't that consistent but when it's on point, it's actually--literally--the best boba that I've ever had. The portions are huge, the price is cheap, and just thinking about all the choices makes my mouth water. The pan-fried dumplings are also extremely delicious, especially with the spicy dipping sauce they serve. Words cannot describe the amazing-ness that is Taiwan Cafe, which is why this review is a lot shorter than what I'd wanted it to be for my favorite restaurant. NOTE: It is CASH only. Food: Delicious, extremely authentic home-cookin' Taiwanese/Chinese food; it is fulfilling and extremely satisfying. Asian soul food if you will. Nothing weird or bizarre. Don't expect to find any orange chicken or some general's special recipe here, but definitely, with tongue for good flavor, find some very tasty food items. The pricing is extremely affordable. Serving size is a good 1.5-2X the amount you would expect from Pei Wei or Panda Express for $5-$7. They do offer many types if noodle soup options as well. Not ramen, but other things like Spicy Beef Stew Noodles, Wonton Noodle Soup as well. Highly recommend this place if you want to try out something new and authentic. It's definitely satisfying, but for some people who may be used to certain flavors do try to go in with a blank slate so you can truly experience the flavors. 4-stars because setup is a "whole-in-the-wall" family setup. Great restaurant. I find their trays funny and quirky, (my friends and I refer to them as metal prison trays) but their food is really good and at a good price. They have a range of options from the slightly more americanized options to lots of very authentic options. Always a line out there door, which is a good sign.
