Walleye Friday Fish Fry $15 - insider tip-best I've had in town! Under the radar :)
    Benjamin P.

Been on the lookout for a good Wisconsin Friday Fish Fry since moving to town. Another I tried was sub par, so I was eager to get back on the fish horse in the area. I'd driven past the indoor tennis facility many times and noted they had a perch dinner special advertised on their sign. I never knew they had a bar and restaurant that overlook the tennis courts below. Their signage certainly could be better. Though the local spot for those in the know could be exactly what they are going for? Well the place really is called Doug's Take 5, and the man behind it all was who was there when I called in my takeout order around 1:30pm. He was very nice, gregarious, and welcoming. Had it ready in about 12 minutes and was there entertaining 3 other patrons at the bar. Tennis courts were pretty empty. I didn't get the vibe that they do much about COVID, masks, sanitizer, gloves, etc, though who knows, I could be wrong. The fish fry offers a choice of perch, walleye, or shrimp and is served with fries, coleslaw, rye, and tartar sauce. For $15, it was a decent value, seems about the normal price that I've seen thus far in the area. No place offers a differentiation of lunch vs dinner on their fish fry. The food was excellent, I will definitely be back, perhaps even to try some of their other menu items. I chose the walleye, it had a tasty breading and nice firmness. 2 big fillets seemed like the right amount. The fries were pretty good, kinda McDonald's size. Creamy cole slaw had good flavor. The rye bread was toasted and buttered and a real treat. I thought I would run out of tartar sauce with only 1 ramekin given, but it actually was the perfect amount of that tasty sauce.

It was taken home to add proper salt & enjoy w/ a good beer cheese. The cheese curds, the only saving grace of the entire meal. They also upon arrival offer a trio of pickles. We ordered 2 hamburgers. Had wanted a cheese burger w/ American but it's not an option. Asked for the plain hamburger to be served w/pink. It was well done and flavorless, not even S&P. The other burger was their black&bleu. We thought it strange that it was served w/ bleu cheese crumbles in addition to blue cheese dressing. We asked for the dressing on the side. 1) which was good because it would've drowned the small patties 2) Perhaps they add the dressing because they add so few crumbles of the actual bleu cheese. The double patties you get are enough to "separate" to actually cover the bun vs having a large part of the bun plain. The buns are too thin to even support a single patty, breaking apart when you take the first bite. The beer battered fries that come w/ the burger are a good size portion but were also flavorless. And when speaking w/ the manger we were informed they were supposed to even have a little kick to them; not the case. It was a tad off putting hearing the conversation(s) the bartender was having at the bar. A bit too loud for what was being discussed and with the language being used. Fine, I guess for a Friday/Saturday night or a bar away from the dinning area. But on a Sunday, for lunch, maybe not so many cuss words. This hasn't been our first time here but it will be our last. Staff is pleasant enough and obviously there were guests that quite enjoy it. There are just other places in De Pere w/ great burgers, consistent quality, and equivalent price points.

Hinterland is…read morethe type of place where you can be super casual but also enjoy a more elevated dining experience. The main dining room can get very loud on busy nights so I appreciated the more closed off space for a large dinner event. The caveat being we received spotty service - for example, water pitchers were set in the corner and you had to get up to pour your own water. At minimum, it would've been better to just leave pitchers on the table directly for faster access. Food was hit or miss. While we loved the appetizers, half of our table found their main entrees to be MEH. For example, my halibut arrived warm but the curry was room temperature. My colleague said her burger was one of the worst she's had. My other colleague said his steak was mediocre. People who ordered pizza loved it. An unfortunate mixed bag given the lively environment and nice ambiance. I'd come back again to give it another try because the menu rotates enough where I'm sure I'll land on some better food options next time.

It's a rare find when they crush both! This ragu was made with homemade bucatini (love this pasta) and the pasta has a lovely chewiness to it that makes it the ultimate comfort food. The sauce is complex (definitely not canned sauce) and has a wonderful range of flavors with a hint of heat but absolutely delicious. I am dining alone but you could easily share this especially if you order a salad to share. I love this place and they never disappoint. Servers are exceptionally attentive and I always leave satisfied with my life choices.
