What can I say! I LOVE this place! Growing up in San Francisco and living across the street from Japan town, you know that sushi isn't so traditional anymore. Moving to Sacramento, you know that sushi has become trendy and "cutting edge". When I go to eat sushi, I like to have a quiet environment; I'll either eat at the bar if I feel like socializing a little, or in a quiet booth where I can enjoy my food and relax. If you want some hyped up, overcrowded, long wait, uncomfortable tables and an environment where you can't even hear what the other person at your table is saying, this is definitely not the place for you. But, if you want good sushi, a clean, inviting, relaxing and quiet environment this is the place! All of their food is good! The sushi is fresh, the meals and tempura are delish! We go with our children and they usually get the meals and my husband and I share the sushi. There is never a wait, it's clean and quiet, the kids love it here; they like to see the fish in the fish tank. The meals come with miso soup, salad with a yummy ginger dressing, rice and your meal. They have children's chop sticks available on request. Our favorite rolls are the Ichiban, and the Volcano roll! It's to DIE FOR! This place is great, i love coming here! I come at LEAST once a week. I love coming here for the lunch special, it's probably my favorite when im by myself. They also have very good dinner boxes with a bunch of different kinds of sushi on it. First off, i walk in and am seated almost immediately every time i come in. Drinks are brought out in a timely manner and so is the food usually. Sometimes are busier than others but it's usually all the same. I normally have a lunch special when i come in. 3 sushi rolls, a diet coke and a water with a lemon. $15.80, when paid with a $20 bill, change comes to $4.20. ha Anyway, the sushi is always great, im a big fan of the volcano roll, and the last samurai roll, also the white and black roll, the spicy yellowtail roll, the crunch roll, and the philly roll are all super good, and im always a bit too full after leaving which is always a plus. They don't skimp you, that's for sure! Definitely if your interested in great sushi and are in the area you should swing by and give this place a try! It's not the best sushi I've ever had but it is the best in auburn. For friendly, quick service, above average sushi, comfortable booths and a consistent price that doesn't change every time when you come in and order the same thing, earns this place a solid 4 stars. Not sure why these guys get bad reviews now and then. I've only been here twice, but each time it was awesome. I order off the lunch special, get two rolls, miso soup, and a salad and am always happy with the price and the food. The ladies who have served me were sweet. The fish tastes fresh. I'm only giving 4 stars since I haven't had the full dining experience, but really, their takeout is great. read more

Very clean and usually quiet. Never too full when I seem to go. The sushi is delicious and fresh. Light when it comes to rice and not as many options as the more popular sushi places. The hand rolls are huge and amazing! One of my favorite things to get there. They are serve great choices of chicken/beef teriyaki, fish and chips, gyoza, etc if you don't like sushi. Their lunch deals are great, you get a lot of food for under $10! The only thing is the staff. They seem to be quiet and don't check in as much as they should when it comes to a quiet restaurant. Also, last time I was there, one of the waitresses was carrying her daughter on her hip the whole time. While she was serving and cleaning up food and drinks. Not to mention the child was not quiet and pretty upset. That was a turn off for me. read more

Unfortunately I have to give this place low marks. The lunch special was an OK deal (2 rolls, miso soup! and salad, for $8) but the quality of the sushi was basically gas station tier. They seemed like pre made refrigerated rolls that were just taken out and put on a take out platter. I would say grocery store sushi like Safeway would be a step above. The miso soup was ok, but the salad was literally a couple of leaves of lettuce and some sauce. read more

We went on a Saturday night, prepared for a long wait. The restaurant was full but we were seated right away and the food and drinks arrived in a reasonable time. Can't review the inside because during these times, it wasn't opened. Pick up at a window. Totally understandable. The sushi was placed in a container and it looked really good. I do like that the rolls are done tightly so easy to pick up and eat. I ordered a spicy tuna and a wasabi tuna and neither of them had any flavor. I used all the wasabi and soy sauce they gave and every bit of ginger just to have some flavor. When I order spicy or wasabi, I expect to taste it. read more

This is one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to, and I've been to a lot!! Very unexpected for being in Auburn of all places! For appetizers we order the Albacore Jalapeno and the mixed sashimi 7 pc. plate. For main, we ordered the Sunshine Roll, Monster Roll, Valentine Roll & King Roll. The sushi here is pretty good, but a word of advice to the take out crowd. 80% of the time they will not answer the phone as they get busy and do not want to take your order. If you do get your order in they will give you long wait times to pick up your order since they put all orders that are at the location eating ahead of yours. I have eaten at this location dozens of times with the experience of ordering take out the same. It is always long wait times and the phone is rarely answered. When I told them about the phone not being answered they just would give me a blank stare like really our phone isnt working....???? I know this to be true as I tried calling several times with no answer so I decided to just go there and place my order in person. So I placed my order with the only server that works there and she said it would be 40 to 50 minute wait. I was ok with that as I could see they were kinda busy. As I left to go wait outside in my car to listen to the radio I said hi to a nice family walking in to eat there. After an hour of waiting I decided to go back in to see what was the hold up was and to my surprise my order had not even started being made and to top it off the nice family that I saw being seated an hour ago was not leaving after having a wonderful meal. When I asked them what was happening the server gave me a blank stare like Oops I guess we kinda blew that. She informed me that they make all orders that are sitting there before they make take out. Needless to say I wont be back here as I don't want to give a place business that runs so poorly and has such a bad business practice. The least they could have done is have given me a I am sorry that happened and maybe a a discount on the meal. They were happy to take full payment and just have me leave without any word from them. I'm very happy to see that others are discovering this great little restaurant. I urge everyone who reads this to try them out. I drive past the location almost every day and until last week I just hadn't had a chance to try it out. Last week we needed a quick dinner to go so I stopped by there to see if they did take-out. I was greeted very warmly by one of the hostesses. I was immediately impressed by the selection and prices. I also found the decor to be very nice. The space had obviously been completely renovated. It used to be a somewhat run down Chinese Restaurant. The Decor now is very tasteful, somewhat minimalist but classy. Nice atmosphere. Anyway I ordered the very reasonable California Roll made with real and very fresh crab; Tuna Roll, also very fresh, and an order of Pot Stickers. The Pot Stickers were very light, not greasy at all. The Hostess offered me a table and water while I waited and I didn't have to wait long at all. 5 minutes tops. My family was so impressed by the quality of the food that we decided to Dine there tonight. We were not disappointed. We all ordered the Bento Boxes. My wife and I had the Teriyaki Beef and my mother ordered the Fried Oysters. The Boxes come with rice, Miso Soup, Salad, California Roll and Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. All very reasonably priced, all delicious. My mother is very picky about her food and she really enjoyed everything. Again, everyone who works there was very friendly and checked on us frequently. It appears to be a family business. Dee is correct about there being a bit of a language barrier but we didn't have any insurmountable problems communicating and they are all so charming that you don't really care. Even the Chef came up front to make sure we had an enjoyable experience and see us out. As I said at the top of this review, I urge you all to check this place out. It's tucked into the back of a little strip mall (The Dry Creek Center) and very easy to miss as you zip by on Highway 49. So far, on both visits there were very few customers, I'd hate to see this wonderful little restaurant fail just because people can't find them. The Dry Creek Center is on State Highway 49 just 100 feet north of Dry Creek Road on the northbound side of the highway. I went for the first time on a Sunday night and loved it. I then on a Friday night to see if it was a fluke. It wasn't. The service is prompt and polite. The sushi is excellent. I have not tried anything else on the menu. (I will proofread your next menu in exchange for sushi - just sayin') The restaurant is super clean as is the sushi chef's station. Finally, I found a place that does an excellent job on the edamame! Also, the miso is great. I think this is the best overall sushi place in Auburn: from cleanliness to service to food. Love it!! Seriously, I cannot believe this place has a 4-star rating. This is the worst sushi place I've ever been. I went when they first opened and thought it was bad but decided to give it another try about a month ago. It actually got worse. The rolls are so bland and there is not a very good selection, unless you like California Rolls. There is no creativity or pizazz. They seem to cater to the bargain lunch crowd with their "lunch combos." Honestly, Raley's or Safeway sushi is better than this place. There are two EXCELLENT sushi places in Auburn, Hanami and Ninja...if you want real sushi, go there. I absolutely love this sushi. The recipes are the most authentic and fresh tasting in auburn. No fish smell inside, no fishy taste to the rolls. They dont over do it on rice and skimp on everything else.. Reasonably priced and hands down best sushi/fish in auburn. However, they seem to open and close their shop whenever it suites them. Like RIGHT KNOW. Its saturday at 2 and they are closed. They say they are open until 8 but are usually closed by the time i get there at 7/730. I understand they go on vacations as they are operator-owners, when they do that they put a sign up saying they will be closed for a few weeks.... And i find that totally excusable. But if you cant get your store open during regular business hours when your signs and internet say a certain thing, you may as well just close your doors. read more

My only disappointments are as follows --- the gyozas are deep fried, they seem like the ones you buy at Grocery Outlet, and the California Roll that came with the Lunch Box was very stale, like the ones you buy at Costco in the shrink-wrapped packaging. If you want good sushi north of HWY 80, this is the place. Had the Hwy 49 roll, the Kamikase roll and spicy beef bento box all of which were very good! Service was outstanding and the wait time (Sushi house is very slow...sometimes taking 50 minutes to bring rolls when there is nearly nobody there!) was also reasonable. The food quality is comparable to Hunami (sp?) and Ninja in south Auburn. No beer or wine yet(license in pending based on the window posting). Will eat there again!!! read more

I highly recommend giving this place a try. Take Maru is fairly new to the neighborhood. They've only been open a few months now. It is tucked into the corner of a strip mall and might be passed up just upon driving by. Nothing really draws you in. However, once inside you are met by a very friendly staff. We sat at the sushi bar. There was only one other couple in the restaurant. We had some appetizers and the Manhattan roll but what I will be back for is the Yumi Yumi roll! To die for! Delicious! Get two they're small and you WILL want more. These guys are worth your business, but I'm afraid because of their location it's going to be hard for them. I ding them for having a CSI TV show playing behind the sushi bar. Not good for the appetite. But I forgive them because they were really nice and we were the only patrons after the other couple left. TV's should just be outlawed in restaurants (OK to have in a sports bar). If you want to watch TV stay home! Go out to dine and enjoy socializing, take a date - get to know each other. read more

Tried take out recently. It was pretty hard to place an order. They were very nice but the language barrier caused the employee to have to switch off to another employee to finish call. I think they are still ironing out the details with take out. The food was good, the restaurant has been updated. I would be interested to see if the dine in service would be better. You know I had my doubts that good sushi could be found on the outskirts of north Auburn tucked into a strip mall. However so far I am pretty happy with everything i've sampled so far. The sushi lunch gives you some decent basic options and the yakisoba surprised me as well.
