The udon was cooked al dente and remained chewy throughout the meal. The ratio of roe to cream sauce was appropriate and overall well seasoned. For someone who likes seafood and fish roe, it wasn't too fishy but still had the flavors. While the squid pieces and clams were solid, the shrimp wasn't as fresh and slightly overcooked. The fried chicken pieces featured a strong garlic aroma that I appreciated. The soy garlic sauce offered similar garlic flavors. The chicken was tender but the batter wasn't as crispy nor airy as I had hoped. The free tteokbokki for each table was decent, although I would have preferred it to be cooked a little longer. The place was still busy on a weeknight and service was pretty standard. I was interested in this iced shaved makgeolli but didn't get a chance to try. Seemed like they had a good variety of flavors including chestnut and boba, and size looked appropriate for sharing. I went here with a group of five total, myself included, which was perfect because I really felt like we got to order and try a lot. Our overall consensus was the food was yummy and an enjoyable meal, but not so amazing that I would necessarily go out of the way to have another meal here again. We ordered the fried chicken, beef chapaguri, tteokbokki, corn appetizer, pork belly wrapped in rice crepe type with injeolmi, and the creamy udon. My absolute favorite was the fried corn appetizer (maybe it was a pajeon, I don't remember any of the names anymore but I shared photos for reference). On this day, I had at least three corn flavored things throughout the day and Take31's corn appetizer was by far my favorite. I think I would actually come back just to have the corn thing lol. I admit I love corn, but not all corn dishes are created equal, and this one was excellent. I absolutely recommend getting this. Anyways, love letter to their ode to corn aside, the other standouts included the pork belly with the injeolmi. One of the group had a coworker recommend this place and they specifically said you should try the pork belly and the corn, and it's clear why. I am making the same recommendation. The creamy noodles was good too, but it wasn't hot enough when they served it. So at dinner, we thought it was whatever, but when I ate it as leftovers, it was sooooo good. So a little room for improvement to the kitchen - not sure if this sat out too long before being served or what. The chapaguri was personally my least favorite, but it ranked higher for my friends. The service was not my favorite - just not the friendliest or warmest. I don't factor that into my rating unless service is straight-up hateful, which this was not. It was just fine. It's also right next door to another Korean restaurant which I was guessing could be owned by the same company. But when we arrived later in the evening, it was about 45 minutes waiting time before being seated. Once the host called out my friend's name, we were advised that we had an hour and a half table time limit. This was not an issue for us as we were not dainty diners and our appetite was prepared after a walk in the city. First, we decided on sharing family style, Makgulli to start off with. My friend had been here once, and raved how delicious and unique the menu was. On the house was Tteokbokki . Complimentary as most Korean restaurants have it ala carte, this place makes it right in the middle of the restaurant in huge batches. So what did we order? Braised Pork Belly, the best dish of the night. We ordered 2 servings. Wasabi Cream Chicken, the white butter whip cream sauce was interesting, not expected. But the fried chicken was yummy. Bulgogi Black Garlic Fried Rice, very good. We ate so much Tteokbokki that there was leftover fried rice. The best part is that they even give you free unlimited tteokkbokki + fish cakes which are some of the best I've had. This place is very tight so if you don't like sitting right next to other tables, this is not the place for you. The free rice and fish cakes were also delicious and not too spicy. Our party got a reservation in the backroom which was quiet and secluded, and our server was receptive and tolerant. Aside from the hostess at the front not being quite particularly the nicest, everything else about the experience was positive! (Pork Belly Rice Crepe Wraps: B) - This is a crispy pork belly wrapped in the cantonese-style rice crepe, with some peanut and sweet bean sauce and some particularly intruging pickles on the side. I think the flavors work well here to play that sweet and salty duality and the crispiness of the tender pork also adds nice texture. What I would like to see here is perhaps a better way to present the dish as it just looks a bit strange and has some potential. (Short Rib Chapaguri: B) - This dish tastes like beef short rib combined with the flavors of indomie and tossed in a heavy, dark sauce. My go-to spot for cod-roe seafood udon! This spot fills up fast, and gets extremely busy on weekend nights. I would recommend a booking if possible, otherwise you can expect a 30 min - 1 hour wait. Service is efficient but can be slightly slow (as expected) during peak busy times. They provide a complimentary starter consisting of a small dish of tteokbokki, which is nice to start. I love the seafood udon, and order it every time. It's creamy and cheesy, with slippery udon noodles which pairs well with the seafood taste. We also ordered the spicy braised short ribs, which was okay but it was really sweet and I probably wouldn't get it again. The included croquettes were crunchy and fresh and I did like the potato though! Great location for date night with a cosy ambiance, complete with cute decor and soft lighting. Sharing a round of their signature Makgulli is a great way to start the experience. After that, certain dishes like the Chapaguri are a must for me, but you really can't go wrong, and the staff will give great recommendations if needed. I used the whipped wasabi cream for some of the other dishes as well~ Added a nice sweet and potent kick, without being overwhelming. Second place would be the braised pork belly. Can't really go wrong with this, it was straight to the point with the iteration of bossam. Super yummy, but just know you don't get too many pieces (or maybe I was just greedy for more). Out of the three, my 3rd place dish would be the Prime short rib chapaguri. The chapaguri gave me a nostalgic feel referencing the quick easy meal made at home, but the generous amount of prime short rib made it so savory! One of the most popular Korean restaurants in NYC. Wait times can get really long so make sure to come early! Some of my favorites are the pollack roe omelette, seafood pancake, and hotpot stew. The pork belly rice crepe wraps however were underwhelming. The texture of gooeyness with already fatty pork did not work for me. After so many years, take31 still remains such a classic korean spot in ktown. It is pretty difficult to get a resy here on a weekend, but we were able to come in randomly and get seated right away on a tuesday evening. If you want to impress, take your friends here for a chill and affordable dinner spot! You probably can't go wrong with anything on the menu- I highly recommend the seafood cream rod udon, chapaguri, and the army soup. I recently tried their slushy soju which also hit the spot. I came with a group of 4 on a Monday night and while it was packed, we were still able to be seated right away. We ordered the Korean Army Stew and the Braised Pork Belly. Both of them were bursting with flavor and great portions for sharing! I really enjoyed the braised pork belly, I think it's one of my favorites in the city. It had a melt-in-your-mouth kind of texture and did not have an overpowering pork taste. The Korean Army Stew was perfectly seasoned, and had a decent amount of proteins in it, but I felt the noodles were a little overcooked. It was nice that they also give complimentary tteokbokki.
