Talab served one of the best chello kebabs I've had. Both the chicken and prawn kebabs were perfectly grilled, juicy, and full of flavor, with a lovely smoky char. The buttery rice and runny egg were comforting and well balanced, and the grilled vegetables added freshness to the plate. Ok, this review is based on our recent experiences. I think overall the taste factor has gone significantly down. In our recent visit, we had ilish fish in mustard sauce, butter chicken, luchi, and their chicken appetizer (don't remember the name). They just taste oil with some gravy. Its located in the river oaks plaza where we have chase bank, starbucks, subway, a newly opened indian grocery store and now this little gem :) Lots of parking in the lot in front of it and lots of outdoor seating. I love how cutely they have done the inside seating and it looks chic. In $35, we got: - dum aloo - 3.5/5- spicy and thick gravy just how it should be. Only a few pieces of potato which was something i wish we had more of. It would pair perfectly with rice, poori or roti - chicken in green sauce - contains cashewnut- 4/5- flavorful gravy and good quality chicken. Loved the portion size. It paired perfectly with butter naan and rice. We got this to-go and i am deducting 1 star for the paper box takeout (doggy bag) packing for a full size portion which kinda leaked in the car due to excess oil and low quality packaging material. Been to Talab on a Friday evening. It was pretty full and I am thankful that I reserved a spot. The wait time is huge. It is a pretty small place with max 6 tables (dine in), however there are outdoor seating as well but not heated. Food at talab is a mix of Bengal ( east India)and north india. I tried egg devil and fish fry. The fish fry was really good. I also tried paratha and aloo dum and mutton dakbunglow. Paratha and aloo dum was yum but I didn't like the mutton. It was too much spice and unevenly seasoned. Considering the overall, the food experience was good but the service was extremely slow. I recently discovered this Bengali restaurant in San Jose. The beautiful interiors and ample seating made for a comfortable dining experience. I am big fan of Bengali food and this place blew my mind with flavorful dishes and delightful desserts. Highly recommended check it out! Not sure why such stellar reviews. Or may be restaurant had an off day the day we visited. We ordered chicken roll, awadhi mutton and fish fry. Many menu items were not available. Not sure why list them on the menu? Chicken roll: Chicken was burnt to dryness. Awadhi mutton: Mutton was not fresh and very chewy. Fish fry: it was ok but too much batter and the fish was bland. Service was super slow. Only one cook probably taking orders on a Friday night. It is a small place with few tables. However many tables for outside seating but due to cold weather we decided to sit inside. Based on food taste, we definitely will not be visiting again. The restaurant was almost empty with customer in just one more table. But it took almost an hour for them to serve the food , that too in very small quantity . We again ordered few more dishes to satiate our hunger and that too was not enough. The Mughlai paratha was a disaster, biriyani in a very small quantity compared to the higher price, the salads on the side was 1small piece of carrot few onions. The taste of biriyani was pretty good though. Finally we complained to the owner about the whole thing and he agreed to the same and gave little discount. This place serves terribly bad food. Where do I even start? I ordered a large pickup order with Murg Tikka, Chicken Reshmi Kabab, Tandoori Roti, Butter Naan, Daal Makhani, Mutton Duckbungalow, Awadhi Mutton. Firstly, the murg Tikka was absolutely burnt and the chicken was extremely dry and fibrous, tasted horrible. Chicken Reshmi Kabab is supposed to be white, all the curd was fully burnt. Tandoori Roti was dry and should be renamed as Papad. Dal Makhani and Awadhi Muttom were edible but not worthy of the high price being charged. Mutton Duckbungalow had a terrible taste, maybe the spice mix that a Duckbungalow typically has, was burnt. Overall, most, if not all, of the food items were terribly bad. read more

I saw this place was relatively new and the pictures looked great. The menu also looked very good. Was looking to eat out on Christmas day and went here. There was no one in the restaurant. The place is in the commercial section of an apartment complex and parking was easy. We got a couple of the combos and felt that the food was average to above average. For the pricing, we expected better. What was disappointing was the upkeep or the place. My plate that was on the table was dirty with some sticky stuff, the chair was in need of being cleaned with dust and hair on it needing for us to clear the chair (both) before sitting. The restroom had a rusted trash can, backet for paper towels was empty, mirror was dirty and generally untidy. I get that if this was a high traffic fast food restaurant or a Starbucks with even non customers using the facilities but not for an above average priced restaurant. With no one there, the staff can do much better. Service was very average. In summary, are you getting what you expect at this price point, no. Would I go back, even though there are many items in their menu I would like to try like the Kati rolls, unlikely. read more

I came here with my coworkers around 1145am. They were open but it was clear they weren't ready for any customers. It was our first time so we needed suggestions on what to order. We came as a group of 8 so we asked our waitress (who also appeared to be the owner) to help us order for the table. She wasn't super helpful in determining how many plates of each item we should order. We took her suggestion and ordered two apps to start. After 10-15 min we were ready to order but she was nowhere to be found. We had to walk up and order at the counter to get her attention. Also their menu is very limited during the weekdays. Most of their good dishes are only available on the weekend which was disappointing. When the dishes started coming out the timing was very scattered. We would only receive one plate at a time when we ordered multiples of each plate. So we would have to each get a small portion of everything until the next plate came out. It was very inconvenient to eat this way. All the plates also came out without serving spoons. So we again had to pause and find the sever to ask for spoons. The food was also very spicy to some of the people in our group so we were constantly out of water and couldn't get a refill. When all the dishes finally came out everyone thought the food was very good! It was just spoiled by the poor service. I understand this is a newer restaurant so I will give them some grace. However they are located in a business area and they need to be able to operate efficiently for their customers who need to finish lunch in a reasonable amount of time. I was excited to try the restaurant after reading the reviews, the menu looked exciting and the pictures very appealing. We managed to get into the waitlist through Yelp for Friday dinner. We arrived at about 8.05, a table cleared up in five minutes. After that they took 10 whole minutes to clean it up for us. I frankly ignored it as they are still new and getting used to the rigors of running a restaurant. They left a half used water bottle from the previous diners at that table and we asked for a fresh one. We meanwhile checked out the menu from the QR code at the table and were ready to place an order for mughalai paratha, egg chop and coriander chicken. We kept waiting for 30 whole minutes and tried calling the waiter several times in between. He kept asking us to wait but never came to us. We were never served water throughout this time. It was almost 9 pm and I finally walked upto the front desk and asked if they could take our order and serve us some water. The restaurant is very small- just six tables or so. I couldn't really understand how they could ignore us for such a long time. He said he would come and finally did. When we placed the order he said none of the dishes were available. They had a handful of curries and parathas. He said they were still trying to get permits for making naans etc. Since none of the items we wanted were available we decided to leave and come back another time. I was in two minds as to whether I should write the review. The people working here seemed nice and kind and I am sure the food is really good. I want them to do well. My goal of writing the review is to provide constructive feedback which I think is extremely important for them to do well. 11/10 experience at Talab. I'm Bengali, from Kolkata, and I've been searching for authentic Bengali food for so long. Four of us ordered a LOT of food and I can say everything tasted very authentic and delicious. We ordered fish fry, chicken roll, mughlai paratha (keema), peas (koraishutir) kochuri, aloor dum, shorshe fish, mutton dak bungalow curry (my favorite), luchi, mango mocktails, mango lassi and mishti doi. I was so hungry otherwise I wouldve taken more pics. The bill was very reasonable too for ALL that food we ordered and the service was fast. The owner personally made sure that we were taken care of and also recommended some of the special recipes she perfected while she was in India (and it showed in the food!). First off I love the fact that Talab is very well priced and has an ambiance. It's hard to find the best of both and this hits the spot. The owner is really friendly and caters to each table with a lot of care and attention. The menu is fantastic and the food is just awesome. The Kolkata chicken roll is a must try. I love it. I wanted to try this place for the first time. Waited 30 minutes from when I ordered to go inside to pick up my food (2 items), and there was a group of people in the front door singing with a mic. It looked like a private party but I went in just to quickly grab my food. Told the lady behind the bar that I'm just picking up. She told me it was not ready and to wait outside. It's freezing outside by the way but after another 15 mins she brings out the food but it's not my order. The service is extremely slow at this restaurant. The food is nice but the portions are small. We made a reservation hours before arriving. Yet the table was not setup with silverware when we were seated (7:55pm). No water was served for more than 10 minutes. I had to summon the waiter and ask him for water. He could not do it immediately. When water was finally served on the table, we had no glasses to drink them. When glasses arrived, the glass I got was unclean and sticky (yuck). Order was taken much later (about another 10 minutes later). The Koraishutior Kochuri and Aloo Dum came with three small Kochuri which better qualifies as an appetizer than as an an entree. The Mutton Dak Bungalow portion was sufficient but was lacking some salt. Order for one person (Mughlai Paratha with Keema and Spicy Aloo) was delayed so much, the rest of the group had finished by then. Suddenly the owner comes and tells us at 9:16pm that there is a large group of 15 coming at 9:30pm, hinting that we should leave before then. When we told her that one person had not received his food there was no urgency to hurry up. By the time we left, it was 9:30pm. There was no party of 15 waiting to be seated, nor was there an urgency to prepare the table for them. I have to wonder what made the owner try to get us to leave? I think the less said about that, the better. Needless to say, this restaurant does not deserve a second visit. read more
