This was our 3rd visit in two weeks! Amazing place for biriyani, fish curry and porotta. Do yourself a favour and order family pack chicken biriyani. It comes with chili chicken and gulab jamun. Enough biriyani for 4 adults. Biriyani is not excessively spiced, still amazingly flavourful. In today's world where everyone is running behind melt your gut spicy biriyani, this place shows how biriyani is done- flavour but don't need to burn all your taste buds and no heartburn!!! Comes in two options of rice- basmati or jeera sambar rice. We have tried both and they are equally good. Small grain jeera sambar rice gives distinct aroma to the biriyani. Netholi fry ( fresh anchovies) was crispy and is a must try. Perfect compliment with biriyani. Fish curry was amazingly made as well - satisfying all flavour profiles in one dish. read more

I have been going to this place after Red Chillies in Milpitas closed their restaurant and now only does catering. This place is a hit or miss but today I was super disappointed hence this review. I go for my staples Malabar fish curry and Beef fry with appam. Beef fry was super bland as if they forget to put any spices in it. Tried this place on a weekend. Thalassery Mutton Biriyani was good. Rice was very flavorful with soft meat pieces. Parotta with beef roast was excellent. Beef roast had authentic flavors with coconut bites, fried curry leaves on top. Parottas were flaky and fresh. Beef roast was slightly pricier than mutton biriyani, but was definitely worth it. We gave this place a try as our go-to place for Kerala food--red chillies closed. We ordered online, although the pick-up time that their website showed was 30 minutes before the restaurant opened. Needless to say, we had to wait 30 minutes after our scheduled pick-up time because their website was buggy and they took orders even during their off-hours. Thankfully, the food was ready within 15 minutes after the restaurant opened. We ordered fish cutlets, kappa, mango fish curry, and beef roast. My order was the green peas masala, peas a.k.a matar rice (delicious), Talasery Chicken Biryani, and the Kerala Parotta. My favorite order was the parotta here (a Kerala specialty that's a flakey, layered, flatbread side). However most dishes / main curry entrees, were so and so. The restaurant is understaffed which makes it more popular for takeouts. There's only one person at the register and no servers. For dining in, we had to place our orders online as if it were takeout. Also they provide only plastic utensils, cups and serving dishes (actually convenient for packing leftovers). I'd have to see some major improvements to return by eager choice. Nothing terrible, just not the most authentic food. read more

We tried the Onam Sadya take out, which was picked up by our family. I have to confess that I had not even heard of the restaurant. I was definitely very pleasantly surprised!! This is our first visit to Malabar Coast and the pleasant experience we had with the restaurant and the server Simran were amazing. So we will be surely visiting again. Malabar coast specializes in Kerala style cuisine. We ordered Ginger Lime, Egg Roast, Veg Varutharachatu, Two Kerala Style Porotta and Rice Payasam. The ginger lime was probably the best drink we have had at $ 3. The similar drink at Jamba juice was around $ 10. Egg Roast was deliciously spicy yet not hot (Chili) at all. It tasted awesome with the Porotta. The Veg Varutharachatu was coconut based gravy and was mild. They can prepare it medium or hot based on your choice. I believe that a great cook can make any gravy tasty without adding too much of chili or spices and chefs here seem to follow this doctrine. We added Ghee Rice and it was peppered with ghee, cashew pieces and fried onion. The dish is amazing on its own and can be had with any gravy to enhance the taste. When the Rice payasam came in hot, we were happy to learn that is made with jaggery and not with sugar. Obviously it was delicious and we added few roasted cashews from ghee rice and taste multiplied. May be they can also add roasted cashews to the payasam on their own. We paid the bill and found that we were not charged for payasam. We brought it to attention of the server - Simran and she was very gracious about it. She said she forgot to add it and now it is complementary. Simran is a young girl who will go places with life with this award winning attitude. Came here for a family brunch. There was no one else eating inside. It seems more like a takeout place -- people kept coming in and out to pick up their food. But it was pleasant eating inside. The food was great. A few dishes were pretty good but a few were truly excellent. Even my mom and aunts (who are very picky about their Kerala food) enjoyed it. Would definitely come back! read more

My best friend and I visited Malabar Coast today for dinner and I was absolutely mind blown by how flavourful and yummy the food tasted. My first time having Kerala food and my bestie (he's from Kerala) ordered some dishes for me to try. He ordered 2 curries Chicken Varutharachatu (Spicy chicken curry cooked to perfection with curry leaves and red chilli, tasted little similar to chettinadu chicken curry with Kerala flavors) CHEMMEEEN MANGA CURRY ( shrimp curry with notes of raw mango, tamarind cooked in coconut oil) , Iddiappam( steamed rice cakes like vermicelli) and parota. The food was exceptionally yummy and I absolutely loved my first Kerala food experience. The iddiappam and shrimp curry was a match made in heaven. Same goes to chicken curry and parota. Haven't been more disappointed with a restaurant in recent memory. The menu looked exciting with a lot of unique options and we ordered a lot of varieties - fish cutlets, chicken 65, talasery chicken biryani, kappa, parotta, idiyappam, meen vatichathu. Chicken 65- the only decent dish of the evening, not exceptional but nothing much to complain about. Fish cutlets- under seasoned with a strong smell of fish. Idiyappam- not freshly prepared, they were hard set due to sitting around for some time. Kappa- made with yucca root, there were several large chunks of the intact yucca root. Porotta- flaky but very stiff without much malleability. Meen vatichathu- fish curry with very strong flavor of tamarind. I personally didn't like it. Talasery chicken biryani- the dish came with rice mixed with a very oily chicken gravy as the bottom with some other rice on top. There was a boiled egg as well. The texture of the rice was hard, it was not uncooked but it's the state the rice gets rendered to when refrigerated. The temperature of the dish was inconsistent, parts of it were warm and parts of it were room temperature with the hard rice. The boiled egg was fridge cold. We couldn't eat the dish. I hate wasting food and tend to pack leftovers but this was something I could barely eat or pack to take home. I personally wanted to provide feedback to the owner so I requested a call back as he was not at the restaurant. He promptly called me and spoke to to me for 10 mins, took all the feedback constructively and apologized for my experience. I hope they improve and take the feedback in the right stride. read more

We love Malabar Coast. There aren't many restaurants in the Bay Area that serve authentic Kerala food. If you miss Kerala cuisine, you must try this place. We like most of the dishes, but we keep reordering the beef fry, ghee rice, and chicken piralen. The kappa and fish curry are also good. The porotta can be a hit or miss. Asked the cashier and his meak response was that is how we make it, when asked you should have called and informed so I can cancel the order the response was the chef did not see the message that came with order. Kerala food in CA and this was our first one in the list along with red chillies. We have to preorder food and pay for it before dine in which I felt very unconvincing. Coming to food, outstanding tawa prawn fry and porota. Mutton curry and beef fry were okay. I felt it had too much overpowering of garam masala. Biryani was a let down. Fish curry was good. Lunch on a sunday afternoon. Between the 4 of us, we got a veg stew, mutton curry, chicken mappas, a bunch of parottas. Parottas were good, absolutely no complaints there, tasted pretty much like parottas in india. Mixed veg stew was okay, not too bad but not too great either. I had to pick out way too many whole spices and long ginger pieces from the stew. The non veg people said everything was okay/good, but nothing stood out extraordinarily. The chicken was apparently the best of the three. Overall, food was generally average/almost good enough to make you want to come back. Maybe the non vegetarians would come back, I wont. read more

I called them when my order was messed up and I received someone else's delivery. The person who answered the phone yelled at me and said it was my problem and he can't help. I try reaching Uber and the driver and cannot get to them. I call the restaurant and ask to speak to the manager and got hung up on. It's not the order or the $110 I paid. It's the principle. Wanted to try this place for a long time and finally did. Got the Chicken Varutharachatu, Malabar Fish Curry and Kerala Porotta for to go but didn't really like the food as much. Both the curries had lot of oil. Chicken Varutharachatu was decent in taste but was really spicy (even though we had asked for medium spice level). The fish Curry had fish chunks which didn't taste fresh and were really hard in texture. Probably not a good day for these dishes but the porotas were really yum and tasted good. read more

Great Kerala food! Went there on a Friday evening and was almost empty. Ordered the vegetable cutlets, babycorn Manchurian, chicken kadai, mushroom biryani. The veg cutlets were beetroot cutlets most likely deep fried but tasty. I didn't care so much for the babycorn Manchurian, didn't taste like Manchurian. The chicken kadai was super delicious! Chicken cooked to perfection. The mushroom biryani was super flavorful and minty fresh. The food is a bit on the spicier side but thats expected of Kerala cuisine. Ordered 5 items for takeout. Location is right off el Camino, so it's very convenient. Orders via phone and online both worked super easily. Beef cutlet was delicious and just right in flavor and consistency. One of the kids can't handle spicy food so we got the chicken kappas, very tasty and flavorful not spicy. Ordered the beef curry medium spicy and it was amazing. For the spicy stuff we ordered the mutton roast and it had a nice kick and amazingly tasty. Last item was the Malabar fish curry which was also very tasty and a little spicy. None of the dishes were super spicy so they be enjoyed by a variety of people. Mutton and beef dish goes well with naan or paratthas and the chicken and fish stews go with rice. Highly recommend this place. read more

When I asked guy at the counter, disinterestedly he said that they do offer dine-in and not sure who told me otherwise. Meh! Ordered Kerala Porottas, Kappa Biriyani, Signature biriyani - Thalassery Chicken and Beef roast. The food was packed really well and it was warm. The Biriyanis lacked the charm. It was not flavorful. The Kappa Biriyani is very unique style of Biriyani from Kerala cuisine was very disappointing. It was nit even properly salted, no real flavor to it. Thalassery Biriyani is another variety, which carries that authentic flavor with it. The porottas were flaky and delicious. The beef roast was decent with it. Loved those two. The price is very reasonable, for almost all the items, in comparison with the other Kerala restaurant around. But the quality is no match. I ordered Talassery Biriyani from door dash, from Malabar coast, the biriyani came with no egg, raita, or pickle instead kept yogurt but they charge full price including delivery fee, and even door dash pass is not applicable so full delivery fee is paid but the food being served is horrible with missing items. I am surprised that this is how they treat their long time customers and expects to stay in business? Frankly, we were so disappointed about the food from this place. I have eaten Kerala food in Kerala, India. Despite the name, it is not totally Kerala food. We tried the following food: Pompano fish fry, Malabar Fish curry, Chili Gobi. The pompano fish was brought with not enough coated masala making it taste so bland. The kappa was delicious, not too spicy, simple and tasty, maybe a touch of coconut oil would have made it perfect, the chemeen tawa fry was fully loaded on spices and maybe a tad salty for my liking, but spice lovers rejoice, am also surprised at the value of this one, so many pieces, absolutely recommend, the one dish I wouldn't recommend is the parotta, it was ok, crispy not flaky and fresh ! Though most of the orders here were taken to go, the service was friendly and attentive, and the dishes came out of the kitchen extremely quickly after we ordered. We started with the Beef Roast, made of tender chunks of beef cooked in an iron pan with tomatoes, onions, and spices. The Malabar Fish Curry was a stew containing chunks of meaty mackerel and morel mushrooms in a sour curry flavored with fenugreek seeds, shallots, and mustard seeds. And finally, the Kadala Curry was made with black chickpeas (kala chana) and chunks of coconut in a slightly creamy sauce. Even though not many people came to dine in but the number of takeouts were surprisingly high, every minute one person was coming to pick up a Togo order. The problem was I didn't have change for a cash tip so I wanted to put it on my credit card However, they don't accept tips on credit cards... never heard of that before! Had been to this place few times so far, and they have a consistent way to deliver their items to the table. Mutton fry/roast: outstanding Beef fry/roast: loved it Meen vattichathu: just like the way I would like to have Biriyani: has got the authentic Malabar flavour to it with the right texture. I would prefer jeera rice (to be precise Wayanadan kaima rice) in the biriyani if it's Malabar or Thalassery style, because that's the authentic way and this is only my personal choice Appam: it's good, but I would love to have those crispy edges to it Chapathi: I don't think a chapathi needs any review. really soft and big, you will like it Porotta: really soft and fluffy ones with a good aroma to it. And those stupid people who think this should have been made with wheat, Kerala porotta is made using maida. That's why it's not "Parantha", but "porotta" :-) I think there's a wait time since they are preparing most of the dishes freshly unlike other restaurants who manages it with microwave oven.
