This is during COVID and the shop was doing a great job with masks, distancing, and keeping as much interaction outside on the sidewalk as possible to protect their team and their customers. I have a ~10 y/o Scott cyclocross that i commuted on in SF for a few years...but it's been out of commission for awhile and I wanted to get it into shape to ride around Marin with my sons. I knew the bike had one real problem (a cable issue that i couldn't figure out how to fix myself) and I thought there was something more seriously wrong because the back tire occasionally rubs against the chain. I figured it needed a real tune-up and was prepared to spend ... $100? $200? So i brought it into Tam Bikes. In 10 minutes, my cable was fixed, my gears and seat were re-adjusted, and my tires were full. The super-friendly mechanic (I wish i got his name) said, "I wouldn't mess with anything else. The bike's in good shape. Your levers are old, and this type tends to stop working at some point, but they're fine now. As for today, how much do you think that's worth?" To which i said, "You're the professional. You tell me." He replied, "I was gonna say 10 bucks." Damn. I'll be back in soon to spend the rest of my budget on clothing, etc., and when it comes time, I'll take my kids' bikes there for service, too. Thrilled to have this shop in my community. read more

When I was ready to pull the trigger on my new mtn bike, I found out Santa Cruz had already rolled out the new highball at $400 more and only in 29 inch wheels and you couldn't order the 27.5. Also, the new colors weren't working for me. And I hadn't been able to test ride it as no one had it in stock. BUT, Tam bikes had the exact bike I was wanting, the 27.5 in matte black! I want to thank James for agreeing to build it before purchasing so I could test ride it first. No other shop would do that for me. They all told me I had to buy it first and they would order it and then put it together. My only other option was to drive to Santa Cruz and demo it which would've been a hassle for me. Instead, I was able to buy it sooner and locally I'm giving them 4 stars only because they sold me a dropper seat post that was not what James said it was and did a shoddy installation. But they made it right and gave me a discount on the new dropper post. Tam Bikes delivered. Got what I wanted and the new seat post is installed perfectly. read more

I'm really disappointed with how rude and condescending the mechanics and staff have been to me. I called on a Friday and was told to bring my bike in Saturday for a free no obligation check on my bike and that no appointment is needed. Come Saturday I'm told by an incredibly rude mechanic that no such thing exists and I'm a liar for saying I was told that on the phone. After being disregarded and shooed away, I left feeling insulted and upset. This isn't the first time I've been treated badly there. I go in hoping to support local and shop small for parts etc. always to be talked down to and feeling hurried out of the store (if I can even get more than 30 seconds worth of help). I wish I had something better to say but after multiple experiences like this I will not be returning. No one should be treated like this, especially not when you're simply looking for some help with your bike. read more

Many stores sell bicycles and accessories. Not many have the kind of excellent customer service that Tam Bikes does! These folks are the best! They will even give you the shirt off their back and the shoes off their feet. I had forgotten my MTB shoes after a drive to Mill Valley, and James actually lent me a pair of his shoes, so that I could ride. Who does that? James at Tam Bikes, that's who. This got to be one of the best bike shops in Marin. As in all bike shops in Marin, the choices of bikes are rather pricey. So, to buy bikes I have gone a different route. I actually buy them online. And, then I get them assembled, checked, tuned up at Tam Bikes. And, they have done a superb job. They also don't mind the arrangement at all. They are appreciative of my using them as my main and only bike service maintenance shop. For their services, they may not be the cheapest. REI's biking department is typically a lot cheaper. However, Tam Bikes is also a heck of a lot better. In the end, Tam Bikes provides a far better value for their services than REI or any other bike shops. Other bike shops are good, but then they tend to charge a lot more (for not much more if anything at all in terms of service quality given that Tam Bikes services are already excellent). Tam Bikes service staff is genuinely very smart. Whenever I come up with a biking problem, and I have had quite a few, they are always resolving it in a creative and very efficient way from both a time and a cost standpoint. And, in those areas Tam Bikes really shine. They are far better than most. Also, their staff is very generous with their time. They always spend much time with you explaining all the underlying mechanics associated with any problem and solutions considered. If you want to buy a bike there, it is a fine shop. They are big on mountain bikes and cruisers. They have often some reasonably good sales that renders their merchandise much more affordable. read more

I have been debating about getting back into mountain biking for some time. I use to race BMX bikes as a kid, then got into mountain biking, and had not stepping on a bike in over 10 years. So needless to say the technology has come so far I knew my knowledge was going to be totally out of date. My close friend had just got a bike and told me he had a great experience at Tam Bikes in Mill Valley. He referred me, so i decided to pay a visit. Walking into any high end bike shop can be a little intimidating. The second I walked in to Tam Bikes all my concerns where put to ease. I was treated extremely professionally, and I felt comfortable asking questions, knowing i would not be made to feel "un intelligent." I dealt primarily with Darren, and he is a total stand up guy, and cares immensely about customer service. Talking with Darren I felt like it was one of my friends, super nice guy very honest. I loved that I could demo bikes and the cost of the rentals would go towards the purchase. So i demo'd two bikes, a Sant Cruz Tallboy, and a Specialized Enduro. I immediately fell in love with the Tallboy C. Bike is amazing!! I'm 6'1" about 190 so i ended up going with the Large size. At the time of my purchase Mikes Bike's was having a holiday promotion, and Tam bikes matched it no questions asked. I since have dropped by numerous times un-announced and they have always been awesome about squeezing me in for quick tune ups. Johnny - one of the techs - is a wizard when it comes to bike knowledge. These guys truly are as good as it gets. Give them your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free on a bicycle and Tam Bikes will fix 'em up with a wink and a smile. I came in after some unsuccessful attempts at inserting my lovely hybrid bicycle into a very large box without much luck. Turns out shipping a bike is not as easy as it might seem and after being turned away by the UPS Store on Blithedale for what they kindly called an "uninsurable package" I hurried over to Tam Bikes for a solution. With a once over and no appointment they took my bicycle, in awkward pieces at this point, and wrapped, screwed, unscrewed and inserted my two-wheeled friend into said box, taped up and completely insurable. A handed them a twenty and they even carried the thing out to my car to be re-toted to the shipping center. The attitude was nothing but helpful, friendly and sincere. There was no upsellng or pretension. There's a great selection of bikes ranging from top-of-the-line racers to little tyke training wheels rides and the accessories might be cool enough to even bring biker shorts back into fashion. I didn't want to write a review off one bad experience. But now that they've followed up on the first bad experience with another equally disappointing outing, here I am... One two occasions now I've had the unfortunate experience of being condescended to and treated like I'm simply not worthy of having my bike worked on by their almighty repair-gods. It may be that I'm a casual rider; not the live-and-breathe-cycling type that seems to be their clientele. They've been rude, unhelpful and really didn't seem to want to work on my bikes at all. So much so that they flat out told me they couldn't attach a certain rack that I knew to be properly spec'd for my bike. Which is fine. I took it to Mike's Bikes in Sausalito. They did the work on the spot and seemed to actually appreciate the business. So long, Tam Bikes. It's been swell. read more

These guys are truly world class. My buddy and I both ended up getting bikes from these gentleman. We are by no means pro and we had many questions. These guys took the time to answer our questions and not once made us feel inferior for being novices. We spent nearly 2 hours in the store picking out bikes, helmets, pumps, locks, gloves, etc. all the while we were having a great time chatting it up with the crew. We walked out of there giddy knowing in a week we will be riding our new bikes! We picked up our bikes a week later. Johnny was great. He spent close to an hour tuning our bikes and getting them ready for their first ride. He also mounted our locks and pumps onto the bike without us even having to ask. While we were there we must have seen 20 customers come in and out of this shop. Seemed like everyone coming in was on a first name basis with the Tam team. I will definitely recommend Tam Bikes based on their customer service alone. They have great selection, and great prices as well. My buddy and I will be purchasing bikes from them for our significant others soon. We have no doubts that our experience will be a great one at Tam Bikes. read more

Love this place! Very cool shop and professional attentive team. Unfortunately I broke something on my e-bike, stopped by since they are so close to my house as I read the good reviews. Met with John, he gave me the exact thread count-part number, I went and ordered it as it is bike brand specific, and just dropped in this morning for repairs. Good Complete Bike selection and They can order parts for you if you need them. Also it is hard to walk into the shop with out being asked for help. But the downside is the mark up. Yes I know it is a local bike shop and It is in Marin County but most of the parts have a 10% mark up from MSRP. They can get away with the markup because most people need parts they can just go to a local shop and pay a bit more than ordering online and waiting forever. So Honestly its a good shop but sometimes you have to bite the bullet to spend a little more money to support a local shop read more

When i first starting biking i went to village peddler bike shop and they were very rude and not helpfull. I got riped off there and i now go to tam bikes even tho it takes 30min to get there from my house. It is worth the drive! All of the workers ride and they run into some of the same problems you would have with your bike and they know how to fix it.. I am planing on buying all my bikes from tam bikes. Incredible service. Bought a bike for my son last week that wasn't shifting smoothly through the gears when we got it home. So I brought it back on a busy Sunday morning, along with his old bike (that I intended to leave with them for a few days to tune up before I sold it. Tim quickly jumped on the new bike, took it for a spin and made the necessary adjustments. I told him I could leave the 2nd bike with him as they were busy and he was having none of it. Immediately noticed the bent derailleur, adjusted it......and then capped a couple of frayed lines. And sent me on my way free of charge. I don't own expensive bikes, but they provide the same level of service as though I rode in on a $5,000 Santa Cruz. Great company. read more

Can't say enough about this shop. Won't trust my custom Nomad to any bike shop in Sacramento. Happened to be riding Mt. Tam one weekend and dropped into this shop for a quick map. Wound up spending an hour in the shop, talking to Bryce and Quoc, the owners. Dang, they put me at ease with their knowledge of Santa Cruz bikes and were quick to share tips on local rides. So much so, that I drove back to Mill Valley from Sacramento the next weekend to drop my bike off for a much needed tune. They even had an Industry Nine specialist tear my wheelset apart and make it run like new. My instincts were correct: My Nomad returned in superb condition. WHEW! What happiness! We were glad there was a resource to rent bikes in the San Fran area when in town on a business trip. I wanted to get to the home of MTBing and hit Mt Tam. This shop is tiny, but the people are nice. The mechanic (not the owner) took forever to get our bikes together, but parts were scattered - in the school bus outside, in a trailer - very disorganized. My friend had clipless pedals installed by the mechanic and with about 5 miles to home one of his pedals stripped out of the crank arm. Nasty way to ride home. Judging by the effort it took the mechanic to install it, I'd say it was his fault. But they didn't charge us full price, very nice people. I will go back, but at least now I'll know the bike weighs 40+ lbs for a hard tail, and we should allow a good hour in the shop or bikes to get ready. They need 29ers!3 read more

Bryce and I go way back. Ever since we were kids, he has always had a love...a real true love for bikes. Before he had his shop, he had a shed in his backyard that was literally filled to the brim with bikes and bike parts. He would help friends and neighbors with their bikes or he would build them one. As far as services, everyone of the shop's staff is friendly and eager to help. Not once have I been treated second fiddle (this is even when I call in and they don't know I am friends with Bryce). Staff was very helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant. Something that is, unfortunately, uncommon these days. They managed my warranty replacement through Specialized (13 yr old stumpy frame cracked) and helped me pick out the right replacement for me. No sales pressure to go higher end (I went with a Camber 29). Only ding would be some delays in getting my replacement bike built out. They were very busy at the time and my less lucrative transaction likely took a back seat. But I understand that priority in this situation. read more

Great shop. I'd been dreaming about an new mountain bike to replace my trusty but tired 10 year old Yeti for some time. Got a call from a buddy about an epic trip to Ashland and decided it was time to pull the trigger on the new bike. In one week these guys were able to custom build my dream bike including sourcing a bunch of random parts. They stayed late past shop hours the night before my trip to get the final tweaks done. They have also been great finding us the right bikes for my two young kids that will scale with them as they grow up. read more
