I came into the store last Saturday (2/25) to finalize the candidates for a XC bike for my wife, trying to get back into racing in the near future. The experience was fine until the young guy helping us had to check with the manager to verify flexibility on pricing/demo: Basically, we asked for the following: 1) Is there any flexibility on the demo as we wanted to take the bike for just a hair over 24 hours? Why ask? Well, Most other shops we dealt with were very flexible on the demo aspect, even waiving the cost in one case 2) In case the bike doesn't work out, our 2nd choice would be to build up a bike. I asked how much $ worth of parts we would need to purchase to credit the demo fee towards a bike? The manager never got off his chair to come talk to us. Didn't say hi and he didn't try to explain. Just passed on his comments through the shop hand that was helping us. There was no flexibility on demo, pricing, or applying the demo cost towards a custom build. I felt positive that this "brick wall" attitude would carry over to service and every other aspect of buying a bike through this shop. We drove over to Mike's Bikes and bought the bike there instead. Not impressed at all with Tam Bikes. Your loss on a $7K purchase (not to mention all future purchases for accessories, clothing, bikes for the rest of the family over the years). They also wanted to put my wife on a demo bike (that we would pay $120 for) after we stated that it was clearly not her size. (Small Yeti is not the same as a small Santa Cruz. In the Yeti that would be an XS). read more

Overall the work is ok but too many draw backs... I'm searching for a new place. - overpriced (I'd say significantly so) - had to take my bike in twice and was told the first guy screwed up and should never have done what he did....BUT THEY CHARGED ME twice anyway - they never call when your bike is done, then blame it on the mechanic, then try to charge me for storage. read more

Very disappointing experiences with Tam Bikes on two separate occasions. I highly recommend MIKE'S BIKES instead. Tam Bikes staff and/or management: -provided poor customer service. -lacked urgency to resolve issues. -failed to return calls. -made a mistake with my order that they never fully resolved. -repeatedly dishonest and not forthcoming about my order. -blamed the manufacturer to conceal their own negligence. I now go to Mike's Bikes in Sausalito. Their store is only 3 miles from Tam Bikes. The Mike's Bikes staff, service, and products are excellent. They also have great sales, biking events/clinics and are highly involved in the community. read more

I really had thought highly of these guys until they told me my "old" bike was "not able to be fixed," and that it was too much liability for them to address. Then, without my knowing, they called me to try to sell me a new bike from the sales department, after they had noticed that I was considering buying a new bike. I had not given my number to the sales guy, and yet he reached me on my mobile (through the service dept.). I then went to San Francisco with my old bike, had it fixed (for $335, incl. tune-up), and was on the trails a week later. Scary how greed can get the better of people. I went into Tam Bikes actually looking for a bike to purchase - something I had researched online and was informed was available at Tam Bikes. I walked in and started looking around - wandering for at least 15 minutes looking for the make and model. No one said hello; no one asked if I needed help. Nada. Nothing. Zilch. Must be a VERY self-satisfied bunch of owners/employees there. Hello? Customer Service? Make a sale? Both dead as far as I'm concerned in this establishment. read more

Came in to ask about my chain sounding funky. Got some good help but the Polish/Russian mechanic could not rush me out the store fast enough. He was not even the guy who helped me (Fin or Flynn?). Just awful to feel rushed and pushed out the store asap. And, I have supported the store, bought a new chain there too, etc. That mechanic should not interface with any customers, ever. read more

I don't live in Marin but travel here to buy my kids bikes. I have had wonderful service for the past 7 years. Dennis amongst others were able to give answers to properly size my kiddos with the best appropriately equipped mountain bikes. Oct. 13: I went to Tam Bikes yesterday after reading the Yelp reviews. A young man named Russell helped me find what may be my perfect bike. I'm 57, overweight, with high blood pressure, and out-of-shape. I loved biking all those years ago when I last did it. I haven't biked for many years because of severe hand numbness. I want to get into shape, and I loved biking, so I decided to give it another try. I told Russell I wanted to spend less than $1000 for a hybrid bike, almost exclusively for street cruising. He showed me what will in a week (because of the color I want) be a bike that costs, including tax, less than $500. The handles have this newfangled 'lip' on them which reduces pressure on my hands, and I felt no numbness on my short test rides around the neighborhood. So far, so good. I intend to followup here with how my new bike feels after some regular use. But, Tam Bikes, as represented by Russell, is great! Update: Yesterday, Oct. 15, three days after placing a deposit for my bike, I was told my order was placed with Specialized bikes, that day. I was told the day I pad my deposit that my bike would be ordered that day. I was told by Tam Bikes my bike would be in on Thursday the 21st, nine days after paying my deposit. I didn't want to wait that long. I wasn't told that Tam Bikes wanted to get a few bikes ordered before putting in the order which included my bike. That knocks my rating down from 5 to 4, although, if I could I'd make my rating 4.5. read more

This place is outstanding, I am hardly a hardcore biker, I just stop in to get little things done on my son's bike- brakes tightened, broken pedal, a mangled chain I couldn't get back on, bought a helmet, to name a few. I have found that repeatedly it doesn't matter how minor the job is or my purchase is these guys still give 100% attention to what I need, every time! I highly recommend this place to everyone I talk to. The owner and all the employees are extremely friendly and helpful, you can ask anyone for help here. In addition, I have found the pricing of everything extremely reasonable. Very refreshing in these parts, to say the least. My husband has had the exact same experience every time he has been here. Went in to get my handlebars shortened since my wrists have been hurting on my new mountain bike that I bought at Tam Bikes. John (one of the mechanics) suggested that the problem might be the hand support and showed me some other grips. I went for it. He installed them in 2 minutes and my riding has never been better. Tam bikes is nothing short of an outstanding bike shop. All the people that work there are very knowledgable and extremely helpful. They take the time to help you understand anything you could want to know about mountain or road bikes. The owners (Bryce and Quoc) are both very nice, super fair and make you really glad you bought a bike from Tam bikes. I came in to buy some cables to repair my son's bike and had been considering a new bike for myself but wasn't thinking of buying one immediately. That changed because of two things: 1. they had the exact bike, in my size, that I had been considering...and on sale. 2: I asked if I could take it for a decent test ride and they lent it to me for 2 hours so I could ride to East Peak. That's a proper test ride! For me that sealed the deal, having been able to try out the same roads I regularly ride on a new bike prior to purchasing. They threw in pedals at cost and dropped a further $50 off the bike and I've been totally happy with my new Tarmac. Thanks guys! read more

Great group of folks, know there stuff, unpretentious and EXCELLENT customer service. A few times I have rolled in crippled with an issue (wheel out of true and rubbing the break, bent derailer hanger). It has been a year since I gave Tam Bikes a negative review. The two guys that treated me like dirt and scratched up my bike (I am still bummed my bike is damaged) are no longer there. I have been in to the store a lot since and bought a gopro and several accessories and the staff has treated me golden. So I am good with Tam Bikes and now recommend them. read more

Tam Bikes is owned by two of the most thoughtful business dudes in Mill Valley. These guys actually care about what they do and sell very thoughtfully. They are not out to make big bucks and forget about the true goal which is to turn people on to riding bikes, having fun and getting out there on the mountain, the trails, paths or side walks. Great mechanics! I'm an avid cyclist and have been to a lot of shops over the years. I've been using Tam Bikes, especially John and George for a while now. George always manages to fix whatever's broken, including some bent carbon rims. And John is always fair, honest, and trustworthy. Something I can't say for every LBS out there. Recently due to a backup of work at Tam Bikes I took my full suspension mountain bike into a rival for a second opinion and to see if they could squeeze me in. They were very adamant that I need at least a $300 service and should probably invest $600 into pivot bearings and bottom bracket servicing. I took the bike back to Tam where they fixed the issue for $20. read more

I love this shop. The guys at Tam Bikes are fantastic! Their customer service is outstanding. I just bought a Specialized Hotrock for my 7 year old. They had the BEST PRICE in town and special ordered the color & size we needed. Once it came in a few days later, they went out of their way to fit the bike to fit my small son. They customized the length of the handle bars, moved the seat, adjusted the hand brakes etc. All of this work was done for no extra cost! We came out of there feeling like we were VIP customers. The owner and everyone who works there are so down to earth, friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Tam Bikes. Although I'm no longer local to the Bay Area, I always try and squeeze in a visit to Tam Bikes whenever I go back. There are plenty of bike shops in my neck of the woods, but Bryce, Quoc, and the rest of the crew at Tam Bikes are what really make this place special. No attitude. Just great customer service, knowledge, and advice. I ride both road and dirt, and although Tam Bikes has slightly more of a dirt focus, make no mistake, their road selection -- in terms of both bikes and apparel -- is exemplary. You can check out the latest Specialized Tarmacs and Roubaix; or drool at the Look bikes and framesets. On the apparel side, this is the ONLY place I found within a 2 hours drive where I could try on Gore, Castelli, and Pearl Izumi all under one roof! Definitely recommended, if you're local to the Bay Area / Marin, or just passing through. read more

My boyfriend and I came here last Saturday to rent mountain bikes. Being our first time, James helped us out with our demo bikes and provided some tips on how to use them. These guys are so great/helpful. I stopped by tonight because of a broken pedal. Rather than sell me on a new set that we agreed wasn't quite what I was looking for, they put a spare one on for free. And last time I stopped in, they did a very inexpensive tire repair and gave my inexpert self some very helpful advice about tire inflation. I don't live in the area, but I travel there a lot, and they'll get my business any time I'm around, for sure. The fellow at front who's greeted my both times--and whose name I regrettably never got--was especially helpful and friendly. Just a great experience all around. read more

My saddle came undone on the top of mount Tam, and I had to ride all the way down to Mill Valley without it. Tam Bikes didn't have the parts to fix it but they spent about half an hour finding a bolt which got me home seated. This is a great shop. They were good when they opened up on Sunnyside, good when they moved to Tam Junction, and now much better now they they are on Miller in a proper shop. They mood is low key, helpful, interested in helping you save $, and they seem equally happy to help whether you have a Huffy from Sears or a custom Seven. They built my Ibis mojo from the frame up. I got all the parts and they put it all together, right the 1st time. No issues and they did a fitting for me no charge. They've built my wheels, fixed my kids bikes, all sorts of stuff. Tam Bikes is hands down the best shop in Marin. Not only are they passionate about their bikes but their customers as well. I've had numerous times where something goes amiss with my bike and they are always willing to get it in and fix what ever problem I am having pronto. They are extremely knowledgeable about their brands and really go the extra mile to ensure you're getting exactly what you want and need. When I am in there I don't feel like they try to push a particular brand on me, they simply listen to me and help me find the right product for my biking needs. After moving to the city I still use Tam bikes as my primary bike shop because their knowledge, service, and overall excellence is unbeatable. read more
