Tamarack Junction is a nice local casino in South Reno with a very cool cafe called the DC Cafe. DC stands for Dining Car. The ambiance It is all about the Virginia Truckee Railroad and chickens!! lol It has great food with very good prices and is a local favorite. My Mom and I go often to get their great lunch specials. You are greeted by Nelson as you walk up the ramp to the cafe with his nice smile, you feel very welcomed. We had beef stroganoff today and a large chicken salad. Our server Robert was outstanding and we will ask for him the next time we come, probably next week! The decor is so cool. The ceiling, lighting and exposed brick makes this cafe a favorite of mine. Jan 2026 Came back for another visit and tried their cafe, DC Cafe--be sure to check out that review. It was pretty busy during the morning hours. I had to get another card, as mine was likely demagnetized. This was my second time dealing with Guest Services--both during my last visit and again this day. Unfortunately, the interaction felt more like going through the motions rather than being welcoming. They don't seem to provide the same level of customer service as the cafe staff, which is unfortunate. As the "face" of the company, it's disappointing--especially since new members are more likely to interact with Guest Services than with other departments. I eat here at least once a week, often more. If you are looking for a good deal, you can't beat their Sunset Special. It goes until 5:30 and features several entrees to choose from and includes dessert for only $29. I often sit at the bar, where you can get full service, but the service inside the room is lovely. Go for the food, take your chances on the gambling. We have eaten here several times and for the food to be reasonably priced, taste good, and served quickly. The restaurant and cafe staff have all been great. Gambling has been less than desirable. I come prepared to lose, but tend to lose faster than at other casinos. It came with bread and a relish tray, butter, and a green goddess dressing for the relish tray. Also, we had a calamari steak which was tasty. I had the steak which cost three dollars more but it was worth it at 10 ounce New York steak. Cooked just the way I like it. My husband had the 10 ounce pork chop which was very tasty also. It has been over 2 years since we last went to the Tamarack Casino Cafe and something major happened. The prices went up and the quality of food went WAY down. We were there for dinner and the place was empty. I guess everyone else found out about this decline in service and food quality before we did. We ventured into Tamarack on a recent trip home to a nearby town. The restaurant was busy. We were greeted by Devin, who was very cordial and seated us immediately. Because they were so busy, Devin took and delivered our drink orders. Bennett brought place settings to our table. Bennett was also pleasant during our brief interaction. Robert, our server,came by and stated he would be right with us. Robert was working very hard and I saw that he was very pleasant during his interactions with other patrons. Robert came to our table and took our order after a short wait. As I took a look at the people providing service to the nearly full restaurant, I noted that all were young people, all were working very hard, and all came across as pleasant and engaging. The restaurant manager ended up bringing out our food because Robert was so busy. Robert checked on us multiple times during our meal. As we paid our ticket, the female at the counter was also extremely friendly and engaging. I found my entire experience at Tamarack very very pleasant. I loved seeing the employees and manager working so hard with no hint of rudeness, unhappiness, or displeasure. Thank you Tamarack. As I'm not even an occasional gambler, I tend to go to Casinos for a show, a special meal, or an event. Last Thursday, some may have seen me at the Tamarack Casino, as an Alumni of another ceremonial tradition - Aggie Muster. "If there is an A&M man or woman in one hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas." Aggie Muster is a tradition at Texas A&M University that is celebrated on April 21st (San Jacinto Day) each year. My attendance was part of a global event where every A&M club (several hundred of them, plus the home campuses) participated. I'm also a graduate of the University of Iowa and Cal Berkeley, and believe me, I've never seen anything like it at any other school I've graduated, studied, or visited. "We do this because we share a great tradition, greater than the single memory of any one of us. And though the years pass and faces change, visible appearances alter, the spiritual core of Muster remains unaltered and undiminished." The Aggie Muster event that I attended included lots of socializing (over a bottle of Shiner Bock and Country Western Music), a sea of Maroon and White attire, a spacious and comfortable events room, great conversations, a delicious BBQ meal, an engaging guest speaker (Tyson Voelkel '96 - President, Texas A&M Foundation), a few sing-alongs of key Aggie songs, and finally the ceremony that together honors the memories of departed fellow A&M men and women that prevented their answering Roll Call at the annual Muster. Softly call the Muster, let comrade answer, "Here!" I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and was grateful to the hard working staff at the Tamarack that helped make this event a success. As I said my goodbyes to new friends, I was also touched that my Texas A&M experience (Class of 1980) continues to bring meaning to me in so may ways. Another local casino. It's located on the far south side of Reno. Tamarack Junction is pretty basic as far as the games and stuff. People also come here because there's a few cafes and restaurants that serve basic country and Western style food. You can have fun but it's not enough to stay a long time. It pretty much is a place for locals to eat and gamble. Many people come in just to eat at one of the cafes or restaurants inside. There's a coffee shop, a steakhouse, and another restaurant called Sully's. Basically you can eat multiple times each visit you come in. The other main thing is gambling and about the only way to do it here are slots. It looks like there's few if any table games. The last time here there didn't appear to be any, so this isn't a place to come if you're looking for serious action at tables. As for the machines they are tight so you likely won't win anything. The atmosphere is kind of depressing and the staff is slow to provide any help. Basically it's a kind of boring casino. It has lots of unhealthy dining options. I really like the Tamarack casino. Sometimes I leave MAD but hey, I chose to throw a few bucks down the toilette. I especially love the remodel; it's hard to remember what it was like before. I've been going to the Tam since 2012 and I have some good and also mediocre to bad memories here. We recently went here for the Kentucky Derby and that was super fun watching on the horses on the big screens near the Steakhouse while ordering Mint Juleps. Then we came here again after a 4th of July BBQ and sat at the bar to finish watching a San Fran baseball game. The couple gambling next to us at the bar were super friendly. Now this review is strictly based off the DC Cafe and their breakfast menu only. We were a group of 3 at a late brunch/lunch hour, so I understand that the breakfast may not be as freshly prepared, and their winding over a new shift and menu. HOWEVER, this is a 24/hr restaurant that serves breakfast all day. So, all that in mind... I think the biggest deduction is based off the portions? It was a seriously small amount of eggs, pancakes were small and flat, and I suppose two strips of bacon is norm. My boyfriends steak wasn't even a 1/2 inch thick, and not prepared to his request (medium rare). Which is honestly probably due to the fact that the slab of meat is so thin, probably cooks through super fast. Other things like slow and forgetful service were also a factor, but I know everywhere is understaffed right now. I will add that they cooked me chocolate chip pancakes as per my request and everything did taste as expected. Also, prices are SUPER cheap.
