Freshly made food and it's fun to watch it be prepared. It's usually pretty quick and even during a rush it is a reasonable wait. Hits the spot and you can't beat the pricing. We had a bad experience with fish and chips. In the Top Deck Restaurant in Cal Neva. Three pieces of fish were tough. we ate one and a half. We said we would pay for the fries, but he said we had to pay for the whole thing. After mngmnt came over, We tried and explain the issue. In the end...we were told by mangment very sternly no we had to pay...even though we were going to pay for fries ..we had 3 security AND Nevada police ESCORT us out. My husband was told he is now banned from there for THREE years!!! DON'T WORRY I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN! Try learning customer service, respect and integrity. One of the last remaining original Reno Casinos. Quality/Quantity - Small local casino. Two buildings...? And two floors. The bathrooms are on the second floor. One small diner, that I noticed; see pictures. Burgers, hot dogs and fries... Other restaurants that we did not visit are: Knockout Grille, Steak & Pasta House, and Top Deck Restaurant. Atmosphere - We came to the Western Lights Event (5 stars and I added the "business" page to Yelp, but Jim W beat me to the first review). Parked in the city parking garage which was free for the event, see pictures. Plus this casino has an entrance from the garage. So why not check out...? Normally free 2 hours parking with a casino validation. There is a small arcade for kids also, but we did not see any kids. Well if kids do come here, I am sure they are all outside at the cool Western Lights Event. "Lincoln Alley" separates their two buildings. The other day I witnessed something at your restaurant "Top Deck" that was horrifying to see a person treated. I ran into this family after the incident (they were participants for Hot August Nights so I was able to get a little more detail) This gentleman ordered fish and chips and when it came out it was uneatable. When he brought this up to the wait staff, he was harassed, called names and ended up being escorted out and threated to be arrested. The chef and the poor excuses for management came out and made a scene that this man and his family had to endure. Everyone watched and listened and I heard it all. I have never been so appalled to see this happen in front of my eyes. This man was not causing a scene and no he was not drunk or drinking. This Chinese "manager" had Reno PD come in and treated him like a felon. OVER FISH!!!!!!! When I spoke to this man and his family Later, he told me they Banned him for 3 years and would be arrested for trespassing if he came back. Personally, the chef, the manger and security should all be fired after seeing how they treated a customer! I was embarrassed for this party. We stopped here for breakfast before driving from Reno to Lake Tahoe.  My husband saw a billboard advertising a $7.77 special.  This special included two eggs, a choice of meat, hash browns, and choice of toast.  Our server, Candi, made our meal fantastic!   She was so friendly, and we really enjoyed meeting her.  Our breakfast was really good, and you can't beat the price!  I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area.  Make sure you ask for Candi!  FYI, she told us that her last name is Bar.  Can't forget that - - Candi Bar!! read more

Had dinner with a colleague and my food (a salad) took an hour. My colleague had eaten and was twiddling his thumbs. I ordered a grilled chicken cobb salad. when it did arrive, the waitress, Portia, literally dropped it and ran I had to get up to catch her. So, my salad had no grilled chicken. it had been replaced by a couple slices of processed sandwich meat. And I waited an hour. The response: "guess they were out of chicken." I reached out but management had nothing to say. Tried to speak with HR, and they were pathetically unprofessional. Do yourself a favor and avoid this burning dumpster fire. CalNev is not reputable. This evening I went in to CalNeva with my son and a friend to play a few games. None of us are big gamblers but we wanted to have some fun after the football games this weekend. We all sat down to play bubble craps and the machine took my $20 without giving me credits. The boys had no problem on their machines but when we let management know they came over to my machine and took about 30 minutes for them (after multiple visits to the machine) to tell me I did not put any money in the machine. They stated "only 100s were in the cash box." This was total bs and I asked them to check the eye in the sky, but I was told there was no way the recording could tell if I deposited money or not. Well after waiting for more than a half hour for that news the boys and I decided to leave. What's more interesting, is we saw a team of security guards approaching our area after we decided to leave and as only saw them as we were leaving. They clearly were getting ready for an argument. We left without any issue but I did let one of the security personnel it's nice that he's working with thieves. I'd recommend you have many choices on the strip and you will be better off by never setting foot in CalNeva. read more

Found a secret hiding spot that not many people dared to explore. If you go all the way to the top deck, there is a bar and some slots, and not a whole lot of people. Appears clean and the service is good. Busy on a 4th of July. The house brews are $2.50 so if you're thirsty for an adult beverage in the middle of downtown in our 90+ degree weather, Cal Neva is the place to go. Did I mention air conditioning too? Ahhhh..... Come here to gamble for cheap games and trashy attitudes. Juny was our black Jack dealer on Saturday night, although she was a funny commentator she misdealed her 10 showing and took my chips even though I had a 21. I asked her to have the table manager look at the cameras since it should be a push, but she waived it off by saying "he doesn't do anything". When I looked over at the pit boss he was on his phone. So when he came over to the table he didn't even ask what happened, he just said it was "a loss". We got up and left after this as we have never been treated by such unprofessionals. I get that this is an old casino but we've been coming here for years. Usually if there's a misdeal the dealer calls it and does a fair trade but I'm not sure what happened this time for their inconsistent rules. Just be careful coming here after 6pm! Back in the day this was a 3 type of joint to get cheapest filling food in Reno Downtown. I recently went this summer with the parents as a last meal before heading home. Old, dirty, smoker's pit. Elevator was in the corner and a true nightmare horror movie elevator no less. Upstairs was the diner. Due to inflation, pandemy etc, prices went up ALOT and like one waitress only for lunch. The Cal-Neva Casino was, without question, the single worst casino experience I've ever had. While playing craps, I witnessed a complete breakdown of integrity, professionalism, and basic casino procedure. One dealer blatantly violated the rules by putting his bare hands on the dice mid-roll to call a no roll -- something you will never see in a properly run casino. It wasn't just sloppy, it was flat-out unacceptable, and it immediately destroyed any trust that the game was being run fairly. But it got worse. A dealer at the table refused to hand me the dice until he patronizingly asked if I "even knew how to play," as though being a woman automatically makes me too ignorant to understand craps. The misogyny and condescension were disgusting and unprofessional, and it made the environment feel openly hostile. When I attempted to raise these concerns, the staff proved they have zero interest in accountability. The cashier brushed me off with no explanation and shoved me back toward the table boss -- the very same person who had been sitting there silently while all of this unfolded. When I tried to speak with him, he immediately turned aggressive, cut me off every time I opened my mouth, refused to let me finish a single sentence, and ultimately told me I was wrong and to leave. This wasn't customer service; it was intimidation. At Cal-Neva, the rules aren't followed, women are treated like they don't belong, and management actively shuts down anyone who dares to question their conduct. This place isn't just unprofessional -- it's toxic. If you value fairness, respect, or even basic decency, avoid Cal-Neva at all costs. There are plenty of casinos that know how to run a table, treat guests with respect, and maintain integrity. Cal-Neva isn't one of them. read more

Spent several nights gambling here recently and really enjoyed myself! I play a lot of pai gau and almost never had to wait for a seat and the dealers were helpful and friendly. I also spent some time on video poker and they machines aren't serviced that regularly but were mostly fine. The drink service is very good too. read more

The cafe has cheap breakfast and steak specials among other things. If you've been downtown you've probably seen the advertisements that this is "Reno's Best Bet." In here a dollar can go a long way, as in things are cheap. The table games are low stakes. Friendly dealers. The casino sometimes has a very bad stench. It's mostly clean. The smell is just bad sometimes. Beer is cheap. Coronas are $2 and others are priced similar. Food options are basic things like breakfast and steak. Cafe is upstairs with a nice view of downtown. They have steak specials for about $5 so meat eaters will like this. Also has seafood like lobster. There's not any good meat free options. Casino is old but it's mostly clean. It just has a smell. The place is fun to play some games but it stinks. read more

This casino was empty on a Friday night except for a few poor dead-eyed sad souls at the one-armed bandits who looked like the last few pennies from their social security checks were going down the drain...in our experience the absolutely worst and tightest slots in Reno, no wonder people are avoiding this place. We tried their restaurant too, the staff looked like they were just out of rehab and needed to go back, and the basically inedible food was as bad as any low rated slop house might have. I really enjoyed playing at the bar getting drinks as long as you are playing the machines drinks are comped some bartenders are better than others Mathew and John the bartenders/barback were awesome very attentive and kept the drinks coming of course tipping is always recommended. I kept coming back for the play action, the food & service even though at times it was sketchy having to walk through an alley to get the the adjacent building which is part of the casino and some of the employees can be scary, but nice. I found myself coming back to this casino even though I was staying at a different casino I enjoyed myself plus I won a mini jackpot which was awesome. As I mentioned I enjoyed myself and I will definitely be coming back here to gamble, eat, drink, & have a good time. read more

I tried a few nights ago to come here while in the neighborhood, but they've changed their hours due to the slowdown in restaurant traffic. I returned at a earlier time to try them out again. Due to coming in so close to closing unbeknownst to me, I ordered the appetizer portion of 16oz prime rib dinner rare to medium rare. Well it came out more of a medium to well done and that was the best they could do so late in the evening. The meal came with either soup or salad, the soup choice was unimpressive so I went with the salad, it was a tiny garden type salad, not pretty but gets the job done. The meal came accompanied with real overcooked mixed frozen vegetables and I ordered french fries since I knew they would have to cook them up fresh, either their oil was not hot enough or these were nit freshly made, but the fries were not crisp enough. The prime rib would not be their sterling best and barely passable so I will order something else in their menu. Their menu prices have went up dramatically but their food quality has not kept up. Came here just to do a quick bite. Great deals for diner food. Reminds me of the good ol Vegas days. They have $9-10 steak and eggs or steak and fries or pork chop and eggs deals. I LOVE this place. I've been going for close to 40 years. Everything except Cal Neva has changed for better or worse, but Cal Neva is still the same old funky, low ceilinged, (no lip service here) truly diverse staffed friendly casino. The only place with $10 blackjack that I could find. The Top of the Deck was great. Kind of like a Denny's type greasy spoon with a huge menu selection and as long as the place is open (it is not 24 hours) you can get anything you want. After a long night having prime rib for breakfast was perfect! But here is the kicker. I went as a noob determined to learn Pai Gow and with their help walked away teaching other players. Their instructions and very gentle corrections when I would mis-set or even foul a hand caused my learning to proceed very quickly and their tip stacks to grow. And the pit bosses are friendly, real people. I had a pit boss get me a drink when there was not a waiter or waitress nearby and I had another one point out a straight I had missed in a Pai Gow hand, winning me a fat Envy Bonus (not a big enough hand to get others a taste though). The place is funky and has a local feel to it. So much more welcoming to an old Oaklander than the uber shiny and expensive alternatives up the street. Even all the table games were closed and covered up!! What in the world?! On the weekend?!?! Their slots area seemed ok but damn this place is in severe disrepair and almost looks like nobody is maintaining it! Their upstairs arcade even looks like no one has updated it since the mid-90s. We were hanging out downtown, looking for a place to eat before standing in line at the Aces. We chose the Top Deck Restaurant. It was quiet but then again there was very few people, of course it was on 3PM. Our waitress was Areceli, seemed nice. The cashier, Arline, no personality.. she also seemed like she didn't really want to be there. We only ordered 1 hamburger and the bun seemed dry ( old ), the hamburger tasted like one of those frozen hamburgers that you just throw on the stove or pop in the microwave. This is absolutely the best casino in downtown Reno. With only a few options these days this one has the best tables. I tried to gamble at some other ones nearby and they minimum bets were enormous and all the dealers were super rude and stuffy and didn't even offer us drinks. Steak and lobster we're not bad. I liked it, but I can see how some people wouldn't. It wasn't the best prime rib I had in Reno but good enough and I was personally happy with it. Get it well done, it's not a fancy restaurant, don't do medium rare. The employees were great everywhere I went, it was a surprise for the look and clientele they get. The restaurant employees were nice and don't deal with bull, which I liked. Don't come with bull and you won't get bull. It's a very run down property with a very sketchy parking garage, but I had no issues parking there multiple times. Server was really nice and checked up on us multiple times, and kept complimenting our baby. More on the food we ordered one wet burrito, and three lobster and prime ribs. Basically you get what you pay for. The food is definitely cheap. You can feed yourself and partner for less than a meal down on the row but then keep your expectations on the lower end. The steak (and eggs) was a big portion but needed more flavoring and a little less time on the grill for my liking. The biscuits and gravy were good enough to get the job done. I worked there for a year and a half cleaning the kitchen, there's mice running around on the counter and serving line. The cooks are so lazy they don't clean up after themselves. There's grease all over the kitchen, the food sucks and the counter where you sit is sticky cuz no one wipes it down. I ll never eat there again. read more
