I finally got to try Tamarind, and I'm glad I did! I ordered the beef phó and it did not disappoint! This was one of the best phó that I've had in the SLC area, and the sad part for me is that they had so many delicious items on the menu that I didn't get to try them all! The phó had rich, deep flavor and very authentic! Service was lightning fast. I love finding good places near us that are open on Sunday because downtown can be pretty quiet at that time. There are iPads to order off of and then they bring the food out to you/yell your name for you to come grab it. The iPads allow you to customize things still, and for us, it was a smooth ordering process. After ordering, they brought out my husband's iced Thai tea. They also checked to make sure we had the Diet Coke we'd ordered, which we did because we already grabbed it out of the fridge. It is a bottle of Diet Coke, which isn't my favorite, but it got the job done! I like the size of bottle they offer. My husband also liked his ices Thai tea!! For food, we started with the cream cheese wontons. The wontons were so light and crispy. Cooked perfectly! The filing was good, but I do like them a little sweeter than these were. They came with a good sauce. My husband ordered pho. The broth was so delicious and made for a really cozy meal. The meat in the pho was good. He accidentally ordered Chinese sausage on the side, and it was actually so good! I got the 6" banh mi with pork belly. I love that they offer multiple sizes because I didn't want a full sandwich. The meat was delicious. I got no spread on it. The veggies were super fresh and the flavors combined well. I also tried a chicken egg role. It was good! Overall, we really enjoyed this experience. The food was delicious. The people who brought out our food were kind. There is a lot of seating with tables for 2 and 4 people that could easily be pushed together to accommodate a larger group. I did not like the chicken pho I ordered with vegan broth. The broth itself and noodles were fine. The chicken was maybe grilled first then put into the broth, instead of being boiled or sous vide to make it tender. The texture of the chicken was too tough. I love that they give huge portions. Honestly, our group had pretty low expectations going into a pho restaurant in Utah (since most of us grew up in California and have grown up using pho our entire lives) but we were pleasantly surprised by the pho here! I would recommend having a more clear process on whether to order at the counter or the kiosks, and what to do once you order. Great Pho! we got the beef pho with just noodles, one with chicken, and also fried the fried tofu. The tofu pieces were quite large and would have preferred if they were smaller. The pho was a great size and came with all the toppings, fish sauce, and chili paste for you to adjust yourself. Personally I thought the fried wontons were average and was disappointed in the lack of flavor. The cream cheese wontons had a very small amount of cream cheese we were hoping for a different ratio. It's a self order kiosk and they bring the food out to you, the place was very clean and we still felt very cared for. I was downtown and returned to Tamarind. Glad that they are consistent in their quality of food. My pho broth was full of flavor and fresh ingredients. The loaded tots were delicious as ever and my first Banh Mi I've had here was delicious as well. Again everything is self serve and readily available. Their employees are always helpful and kind. Just ask any employee if you have questions. Wish they were closer to me, but definitely a worthwhile visit if you are craving pho. We were looking for something other than Mexican cuisine and saw this place on the map. A few blocks from our hotel, we decided to check it out. The place had a counter table on one side and tables for two and 4, but you can move the table together to accommodate a bigger group. You place our order using a kiosk and they bring the food to your table. We all had Pho - every bowl of pho comes garnished with cilantro, yellow & green onions on top. Served with sides of Thai basil, bean sprouts, lime, and jalapeños. One ordered Vietnamese Pho (Customize) because she wanted chicken as protein with Vegan Pho broth. Another ordered the same but with beef and beef pho broth. I had the House Special Pho (Pho Dac Biet) - rice noodles, beef, meatballs, tendon, and broth. Under shared plates, we had the Chicken Egg Rolls - 3 eggrolls with tender pull-apart chicken stewed in pho, wtih shitake mushroom, carrots, cabbage, and glass noodles. Hand rolled every morning. Trivia: What tasty morsel of potato is offered here as a side? (Surprised me at first) The ordering system along the left wall when you walk in, is convenient and easy. Take all the time you need to review the menu items and make a selection. I didn't seek to change much so I didn't discover how difficult or easy it is to sub things in and out. Bathroom situation is sort of weird. You need a code to unlock it, but you don't know if someone is in there. The pho was delicious: - I really enjoyed the two varieties of onions. - The meatballs were great. - I wasn't a big fan of the tendons and there were a lot of those. Sometimes, in the broth they sort of look like onions. I would ask if I could sub those out next time. When I was done eating and still had a LOT left, I asked for a takeout container. It was a tall styrofoam almost like a big gulp. It was too narrow to pour in easily and made a big mess, which, because I felt bad, I cleaned up. After ordering on a tablet, we seated ourselves at a table and waited for our order to be called. We only ended up waiting around five minutes to get our food. We had the Banh Mi Platter with Coconut Curry Chicken, Garlic Butter Beef, and Braised Pork Belly as our proteins. We also ordered the Loaded Tots with Braised Pork Belly. Everything was ridiculously good. All of the meats were so tender, flavorful, and juicy, but the braised pork belly was to die for. The veggies for the banh mi platter were fresh and the broth that came with it was so comforting and delicious. We are absolutely obsessed and can't wait to come back! This place makes one of the best bun bo hue I've ever had. And I'm from San Jose. These ladies know what they're doing. I've also tried the pho before, which was just as good, especially on a cold day. The banh mi bread is perfectly toasted, and they really pack in the meat for the traditional cold cuts, as well as the tofu for the veg option. I wouldn't mind a few more jalapeños, but that might just be my personal preference. All the other toppings in the sandwich were perfect. And the broth they serve with the sandwiches is delicious. They've got a few alcoholic drinks to choose from, beers and soju. Seating can get a little hectic during lunch and peak dinner time so it's easier to come with just one or two people. I am from Southern California close by Orange County. Some may argue that this is the place to get Vietnamese food, however, after trying Tamarind I have to say Salt Lake City is where it's at or more specifically Tamarind. This is the best pho and bun bo hue I have ever had. The soup is so flavorful and they give so much greens to put into your bowl. I was in shock myself as it is pretty hidden and I walked by before. After seeing so many people walk in and it being cold I decided to come in and try. I was not disappointed. The restaurant is self-serve ordering and has a pretty extensive menu. The staff is very friendly and nice and there to answer any questions. There is also a pho challenge where you can win money if you finish the challenge, but it seems tough. I only saw one person has finished it since I went, but many have attempted. The interior has a lot pf murals on the wall and is nice to look at and feels like you're in a completely new place when you walk in. There is plenty of seating and condiments ready for use. Both were just okay, my bowl was rather small and lacking in ingredients (I think it had 4 small pieces of beef), though the broth was really decent, as well as the beef being tough, which is extremely disappointing for pho, and same for the Bun Bo Hue, which I also liked the broth of, but found the beef extremely tough and not tender at all. Great service, the lady who brought out our food was extremely friendly and efficient, as well as the decor, was nice, with a modern touch and I really enjoyed admiring the collage on the wall. It was as flavorful as I was expecting and SO yummy. All the topping and meats you'd expect were there, and it looked small but it was very filling! Definitely a comforting bowl of noodle soup! My husband got the 6" banh mi for $5 (happy hour (3-6pm) discount)!! An amazing deal. We got it with pork belly which has great flavor and just fell apart.
