Being a Houstonian with all sorts of wonderful pho around me, I don't usually yearn for pho in other cities. However, Pho Tay Ho in Salt Lake City stokes my curiosity in so many different ways. When you pull up to it, you'll know why. From the exterior, it looks like a normal residential home. By the way, there's plenty of street parking all around, so that part's easy. And then when you walk in, you see that the home has been completely converted to a small and cozy family Vietnamese restaurant. I lead with this because this place gives off Food Network-ish vibes, like a place they would or should totally feature, because how many places look like normal homes and are full-on restaurants inside, right? Once you walk in, you'll see that this place is run mainly by an elderly Vietnamese woman who has SO MUCH heart. My goodness, she's trying to make sure everyone dining in is loving what she cooks. And those that are helping? You can tell they're family too. If not direct family, they're family friends. It's that kind of establishment. You feel like you get some serious home cooking here. Whenever I go to a pho spot, I have to get the Pho Dac Biet, or the pho with all the fixins, because why wouldn't you? Haha. The way the noodles soak up the broth... it's quite succulent. And usually I don't add hot sauce to my pho (I do like to mix a combination of sriracha and hoisin to dip), but the hot sauce here is made in house and is super special. It resembles the chili crisp hot oil seen elsewhere, but yes this is made in house and it is a worthwhile add to the pho, as long as you like to add some spice, of course. I've been to Salt Lake City enough times now to where the Pho Tay Ho owner/chef knows me, and she always comes over to chat a bit to see how I'm doing. Makes me feel so much like a VIP! While I was recovering from my kidney transplant, my ICU nurse and I were talking about pho. I told him I wanted to find the best bowl in town. Nick asked his friend which pho house is the best in SLC. Pho Tay Ho was suggested so today we tried it out. The venue is quite interesting. It's in an old house which is cool. There's quite a few tables and can hold quite a few guests. We did arrive a little after 5. It was starting to get busy after we placed our order. I'm happy we got there when we did. They are very very very short staffed. You get your own utensils. Everything is brought all at once said a notice on the fridge. You actually write your own order down on the ordering pad. They don't really check up on you. So, service is not to be expected. They drop your food off and that's pretty much about it. We started off with an order of cha gio. I got the bahn cuon for dinner and my sister got the large special pho. We also ordered hot tea which didn't get delivered to us till right before the meal. We waited an hour for our food to be made. Tables that ordered after us got food before us. There is truly no method to their madness at this restaurant. The cha gio was finally dropped off. The flavor of the egg rolls were good but they were cold. Fried and just left sitting in the back. My bahn cuon was dropped off and I was so disappointed. I had to laugh cause of the disappointment. They were so tiny! All noodle and hardly any filling. They did not look the what was pictured on their menu. I can't even describe how small these things were. I would say they are comparable to veggie egg roll from Panda but not as girthy. It took me about 3 minutes to eat and I was done. I did come for the pho so my sister gave me a small bowl of hers. The pho was just as disappointing as well. No flavor to the broth. You couldn't smell or taste the aromatics of the broth. The noodles were over cooked. I can't believe I stressed about coming to this joint just to be disappointed. I took Nick's word only to find out that this joint is not it. I can tell you that Pho Salt Lake and La Cai pushed out great bowls of pho. It's cool that I got to mark this joint off my list but the service wasn't there. The food wasn't there. The Best and most homey and cozy Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. Parking is really easy, though they don't have a parking lot you can park along the street or in the neighborhood. If you're looking for No-Frills-Pho than Pho Tay Ho is the place for you. Everything is so simple (in the best way). Every time I've been to PTH it's super quiet, like a sacred gathering of pho worshippers. The vibe isn't like a usual Vietnamese restaurant. You seat yourself, order your food by number, grab your own utensils/napkins, and exchange minimal words with any of the staff. It's honestly an introverts dream! I'm not sure if I was accidentally given the veggie broth, but my broth was lacking in flavor. However, as most pho-enthusiast know, that's what the sauces are for! The chicken pho was delicious. The restaurant is in a house in a neighborhood so you need to know it's there to find it. Saturday night we did not have to wait for a table and our service was very fast. The staff seemed to speak limited English so service was minimal however they were very kind and our orders were all correct. I did have a hair in my food and they don't offer Coke/Pepsi products so that's what lost the 5th star for me. read more

Living in the city next to Westminster (Little Saigon) California I have had a lot of great bowls of Pho over the last 15 years. While staying in Salt Lake City over a year and a half the best meal I had was at Pho Tay Ho, and one of the best bowl of Pho I have ever had also. Came to try this hidden gem because my friends said it was really tasty and run by two grandmas in a house. I read the story of Pho Tay Ho on their website, so I was stoked to try it. I love the simplicity of their menu. However, their pho broth is more on the lighter side and their portions are smaller than most restaurants. Unfortunately, I did not love it as much as I'd hoped. I also personally love beef meatballs in my pho, but their beef meatball had an odd aftertaste. Side note: they sell cute pho-themed stickers by the cashier! Randomly found this pho place while driving to our hotel. It's definitely off the beaten path and is an old renovated house (which is pretty cool!). We were seated right away and ordered the fried egg rolls and 2 large rare steak pho. The egg rolls were so good! Greasy and oily and just the way I like it. Now the rare steak pho was absolutely delicious!! The broth was so "clean" and light, it had this homemade "my grandma made this" taste to it. I thought the large portion was the perfect size for me but it could be small for people who eat a lot (like my boyfriend). That might be the only downside but not a deal-breaker by any means. Salt Lake's best kept secret! Others complained about the restaurant being in a small, renovated house but I found the atmosphere to be chill and cozy. It does get busy here since it's fairly small, so expect a wait and know that it will be worth it! I ordered the large pho with brisket and absolutely loved it. Hot, delicious homemade broth, good portions of meat, lots of bean sprouts, cilantro, lime, and they leave the chili oil and sriracha at the table so you can adjust the heat to your liking. If it's a chilly day, definitely get the Vietnamese coffee! The coffee's rich intense taste and sweet condensed milk pairs well with the savory yet light broth. Be sure to order the large if you plan on eating it as your entree, the small is a bit small - though who would come here and get the small portion?! You go to Pho Tay Ho to eat pho! My singular complaint is that the spring rolls had shrimp in them, which wasn't advertised and unfortunately I can't eat shrimp. However my partner ate them all and really enjoyed them! I also noticed that other complained about parking but honestly, Pho Tay Ho sits on a corner and Main St. is never too busy that you can't find adequate street parking. It's small and homey - not every restaurant needs to be huge and grand. You come here for the food, and you leave satisfied with a belly full of warm, delicious pho.
