Hidden gem! This place is our go to restaurant in north Austin. 55 C, you won't be disappointed

One of my friends suggested this hidden gem of a pho place and we checked it out on Sunday at around 1 PM. It was packed, but there was a single table open. The wait staff hurriedly helped us pull up an extra chair, and got us waters immediately. The menu is no nonsense, and prices are reasonable. I had the #9 pho with brisket and eye round steak and it was out of this world good. The noodles and broth were perfect. The place was very busy, but the food came out quick, and our waters were never more then half empty. I will be back anytime I am in the area. Might be some of the best pho in Austin. read more

Tan My is my favorite pho/noodle place in Austin. It's off the beaten path and a bit of a hole-in-the-wall, in the best possible way. The service is quick, the portions are huge, and the prices can't be beat for the quality. Best pho I've had in Austin so far. I'm from a small suburban city up north where Vietnamese food is in the reign--there is literally a Vietnamese diner on every corner, so I've definitely missed my own cultural food from home. This is probably the closest I've gotten to good pho in Austin, haha. Tan My is in the more suburban area of Austin, and walking inside is a reminder of a very typical Vietnamese restaurant. The broth has a lot of flavor, though it's a little on the sweeter side (I prefer mine with a deeper, more herb-y taste, if that translates at all), and it's clear--meaning it's good and not too unhealthy! The portions are really big, and I got a small--I was so full by the time I [almost] finished. If you're looking for a good bowl of pho, Tan My definitely hits the spot. read more

Looks are deceiving. This place blends in the the many strip malls in the area so it's not the easiest to find. Not sure if it's the safest area, but hey, if it's a place with great food who cares about safety?! We ordered the 55B (Spicy basil flat noodle with shrimp, beef and chicken) and a bowl of vermicelli (the one with egg rolls and chicken) One word: Outstanding! Both plates were portioned right, and had tons of flavour. I really love how the three proteins went really well with each other. I was quite impressed as ordering non-pho plates at a pho place can get you in trouble usually, but no mistakes were made here! Speaking of pho, there were a variety of pho options that seemed very nice. I would be back to try some of it! The service: amazed by the service. our waiter came and checked on us a lot without being annoying. He kindly asked if we preferred forks over chopsticks (that was a first) and provided us with water when we first walked in! Excellent service Price: before tip, we paid less than 20 dollars. Best pho in Austin! I got the Pho Tai and the egg rolls. Both were awesome. Pho Tai had a delicious flavorful broth, very tender and rare beef that cooks while in the soup. The egg rolls tasted like they were made in house and were served with lettuce for wrapping and (my favorite) fish sauce. These were the closest I've come to Kim's Dragons' spring rolls in Pittsfield,MA. Unfortunately Kim's has been closed for some time.. Portions are also very reasonable. The decor and service aren't amazing, but who cares? The food is awesome. Actually the service was pretty good, just no frills. You know you're in a good Pho place when the pictures on the walls are blown up snapshots of the owners kids. read more

Tan My is my go to Pho place in ATX. Their pho broth is so tasty and always hits the spot. I've tried other pho restaurants in ATX and nothing compares to Tan My. I eat here on a weekly basis and recommend getting their early for lunch time. read more

My family and I are huge fans of Tan My. We have been going here for 12 years, and I have never had anything less than the best Pho or Bun every time. This restaurant has spoiled me for anything else, I have never found any better through all of my travels. The staff is attentive and prompt, the food arrives extremely fresh, and they can deal with special orders from my kids with ease. read more

Tan My - Pho #5 - Vietnamese Near Me - Austin, Texas

The concensus was to have noodle for dinner. So we came here relying on the reviews from Yelp and wow, it sure did not disappoint. As I walked to my table, I peeked at what other people were having. We passed a table occupied by a couple and the gentleman had a bowl of noodle with some nice chunky meat and good share of vegetable. So I talked to myself: "Hmmm, what a delicious looking noodle!" Next, I watched in horror how my feet turned around and walked to the table! The gentleman looked at me and good thing I was ready to say something to ease the situation. Me: "Hi, your noodle looks really good and I wonder if you could tell me which one it is?" Gent: "Number 40, you can have it with either pork or chicken," and he smiled at me. Me: "Thanks for the tip and enjoy your dinner." (phew) and I proceeded to my assigned table. We studied the menu and decided to order chicken pho, vermicelli with grilled pork and eggroll (#40), vietnamese eggroll, and iced coffee with condensed milk. I have tried numerous Vietnamese restaurants in Texas, Florida, and California. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The vegetable was very fresh, the noodle was chewy (tasted like homemade!), the grilled pork was not too fatty, and all the dishes had a lot of flavor that make you want to eat more. This is definitely one of the best Vietnamese restaurants with reasonable price and excellent service. We will definitely be back for more. read more

Tan Tan (as it was known back then) was my first introduction to Vietnamese food. Picture it, Dorothy--Austin 1999...lol But no really, that's how I've been going to Tan My. It's my favorite place for Vietnamese in Austin. I've brought several of my friends and family here, and they are forever fans. It's that good. I'm so serious! Can't even name a favorite item, I've probably had the whole menu over the years. Faves: pork & shrimp spring rolls, shrimp lemongrass vermicelli bowl (#47), pho ga with vegetables (#24), pho with bbq pork & shrimp, combination stir fry (#55), grilled pork w/ eggrolls vermicelli bowl...I could go on forever. Added bonus, the super sweet couple than runs the place. Nice, nice people. If I don't see them for a while, they ask where I've been. Kinda like your family when you haven't seen them in a few months...lol I keep trying to get the recipe to that broth jokingly---they're not budging. Seriously though, go! read more

This was the second stop on the tour de pho, and unfortunately, it just didn't sweep me off my feet. I liked that I could get chicken pho with actual pho broth instead of chicken broth - though I just didn't like it that much. I liked that I could spend 1.75 and getting a soup bowl full of veggies, but they weren't that great. The portions were fantastic for the price though, my fiance even took half his home with him since his eyes were bigger than his stomach and he ordered a large. It's almost not fair reviewing pho places which aren't Pho Van, just because that's pho for me, and I don't know if that will ever change. But a gal has to branch out and get some pho-riety in her life sometimes, and while this was a great one-night dinner interlude, I don't see us becoming regulars. Yum! I love me some vermicelli and pork with egg rolls! A girlfriend of mine introduced me to this little spot today and to my surprise the food wad delicious! My first thoughts, I was a bit weary because it was off in a small shopping plaza but as soon as you walk in, man oh man, it smelled DELICIOUS! We were seated promptly and attended to as soon as we sat down. Having a little time to review the menu I chose #40 vermicelli with pork for $7.35....talk about a steal, they give you this large bowl of food and you definitely have plenty to take home. Fast and friendly service and best of all they are opened until 11p! I'll be back to this place, yumo! read more

I love Vietnamese food and decided to try it based on yelp reviews. I ordered the vermicelli with egg rolls and charbroiled pork. It ok. The noodles seemed like they had been sitting out and were stiff. The pork had a good flavor. I also ordered some shrimp and pork spring rolls. I've had much better. My first time trying Pho, and it was amazing! The first night I went was an hour before close, and the service was excellent! I think the owner was there- he was so nice and helped me choose a delicious dish (#9). I bought my boyfriend there last night, and even though they were pretty busy, we still have excellent service. This is the first restaurant we ate at when we moved from NYC around 6 1/2 years ago. And let me tell you, it hasn't failed us yet! My defacto dish is the grilled pork with rice with a fried egg. I'm really surprised that no one has review this Pho/Vietnamese restaurant yet. It's located right behind the big Target (off Hwy. 183 between Lamar and Burnet) in a little rinky-dink strip mall... and is well worth the trip. I've been enjoying the wonderful near perfect noodle bowls there on and off there for at least eight years and have never had a bad experience or bad service. The place was introduced to me by the infamous culinary explorer Greg W. (bartender at the Crown & Anchor) and tops my list as one of the best Vietnamese soup joints in Austin. You can always tell good ethnic restaurants if the vast majority of the people eating there are of that ethnicity. Tan Tan is one of those places. Part of me does not want to review this restaurant here because I am afraid that it will become over-run with non-deserving culinary trendsetters and degrade into something similar to Kim Phung on Lamar (readers of the Austin Chronicle Restaurant poll continually rate Kim Phung as top of the Pho-scale... disgusting). I always order the same bowl (number 31? a shrimp, chicken, pork, egg noodle soup) and never deviate from that. Yes, it's probably a bit OCD for me but every time I head in there it just calls out to be reordered and reordered.... it really is that good. Spring rolls are recommended too as a starter.... finish off the meal with the Vietnamese coffee.... bring your friends, bring your boss, bring your significant other, you won't be disappointed. read more

My family often convened in this restaurant for special occasions, because the experience is so lovely. This small niche in the wall has some extremely friendly staff and delicious Vietnamese food that will leave your taste buds ecstatic. Appetizers: The spring roles are all good, and the sauce is something else. The sauce is some type of sweet peanut concoction that is addictive. Entrees: My favorite has always been the charcoal-broiled pork Vermicelli (I have had the dish every time due to it's deliciousness). The dish comes with bean sprouts, green onions, carrots, noodles, and tangy sauce. My family often also gets the spring roles. My parents also enjoy the bird's nest, a very unique and delectable dish. Drinks: I normally drink water, but like to leech of my Dad's coffee... they have a sweet coffee that is out of this world. read more

I grew up in Austin and I have tried a lot of Vietnamese places and this restaurant is my favorite in town. Quick service and yummy food. I like their pho bowles because I can add extra veggies and other things to it so I can get everything I want! Family owned so it is the same individuals working there all the time! The pho and bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle) are both solid, flavorful dishes! This is a place I would proudly take my Viet parents if we want noodle soup. One stir fry beef and rice dish on the menu did not impress me, because it was too saucy and sweet for my liking. That's the only negative thing I can think of to say. However, I would still go back on any occasion (for the noodle soups)! Anytime I've walked in, it's a packed house, yet the servers manage to meet all my needs in a good amount of time. read more

Tried bún bò huê for the first time ever. The soup had a spicy kick to it. My first choice at restaurants usually isn't something spicy, but I find myself craving this on random days. Besides the chewy noodles, there were also pork blood, pork bones, and various fatty meats in the soup. Nothing screams authenticity like a bowl of soup with minimal oil and lots of ingredients in it! When I go to a Vietnamese restaurant, the primary thing I want is pho, whether I'm hungover or just hungry. My second priority is banh mi, and a distant third is rice/noodle dishes. Tan My ably delivers on the first and third, and while I'm always disappointed in places that don't do banh mi for whatever reason, its offerings are good enough to earn it a regular spot in your Vietnamese cuisine rotation. As far as pho is concerned, Tan My more than competes with anything in the area. The broth is what makes or breaks pho, and they have a really consistently flavorful and tasty broth that makes a solid foundation for whichever specific bowl you decide to go for (I'm a flank/brisket guy). A $6 small bowl should do it for you - one of my friends once dropped the extra dollar for the extra large bowl on a whim, and I've never seen anyone more defeated by pho; it was truly immense. In terms of their rice/vermicelli dishes are concerned, you can't go wrong with any of their fried rice options or anything with pork in it. These are usually $7-8 and are easily enough for 2 meals. Even their fried eggrolls are solid. Their staff is pretty chill and willing to do allow late orders at 5 minutes before close, which is nice of them. While their lack of banh mi prevents them from claiming hegemony over other places, their pho is still definitely worth a stop. read more

Long have I scoured Austin for great pho. Coming from Dallas, there are several mom and pop shops that are amazing back home, and nothing compared to the pho in Dallas until I ate at Tan My. We came here after a sprint triathlon, so naturally we were starving. My friend ate a large bowl of vermecilli and pho, so I got to try his dishes along with mine. If you are like me, I swear they put something in pho broth, I always crave more after a huge bowl. The portions are made to satisfy. I claim this restaurant to be the best pho I have had so far. I debated with myself about writing this after only one visit so maybe by the end I'll figure out how to rate them. Somehow I had never been here while living relatively close. I read good reviews and since it was cold out and my friend is always wanting to try someplace new I picked Tan My and being Korean she usually wants Asian food. I really wished I had read Meggan D's review first. I had previously read that the spicy beef pho was really good so I went in knowing that was what I was getting. My friend wanted bun and they were nice enough to let her have just charbroiled shrimp instead of the shrimp and pork option. Where I ran into trouble was with my pho. It wasn't listed on the menu with the option of coming with extras.... in their defense the girl asked me three times if I wanted these but I swear for the life of me I could not understand what she said so after the third time I asked my friend what she said but she didn't get it either. Keep in mind we are all speaking English. At the urging of my friend to just say yes and try it. My objection was that I didn't know what I was agreeing to. My Spicy Beef Pho came in all it's goodness with the addition of well, I guess pig knuckles and cubes of pig blood. I was looking at the cubes when my friend said it's tofu. I said "No, it isn't!" She then realized and asked "blood product?" Yes, it was so I started spooning out the cubes and pulled out the other pork parts which were cooked down to where was really nothing on them so had I truly wanted to partake there wasn't much there for the partaking. The dish otherwise was fine. I do not consider myself a picky eater, I just don't like parts. I am careful to skip the dishes with tripe, just didn't see this one coming. Now, my friends bun was a little odd. She started mixing it up and said something to which I seemed puzzled..."coleslaw". Then she put some on my spoon...yes it was coleslaw at the bottom, fully dressed out coleslaw. It was a first, I asked her about and the only reply was "interesting". They were truly very nice, restroom/storage room was clean. Apparently they used to be cash only but now take cards which was good. As previously noted not a huge menu. I may go back since I noticed there was a BBQ pork pho but there will be no additions the next time. read more

For being in a city that doesn't have the best Vietnamese/Asian food, I found that this place is as good as it gets. Their beef noodle soup (spicy) was by far the best I've had in Austin. Their pho was very flavorful and good compared to the other Pho places I've had in Austin. The price is basically the same as everywhere else, but their portions are pretty large. The broth and the meat are great! If you're looking for good Vietnamese food in this area, this is about as good as they come. They are also very friendly and the service is pretty fast. Friends often ask me where's my favorite Vietnamese food in town... well it depends... I've got favorites all over the town, depending on which Viet dish. And Tan My is one of them... for one dish, and one dish only: the "number 31, dry, with soup on the side." Just recite those words, and you're in for a treat. It's an egg noodle soup topped with meatball, shrimp, fried shrimp, bbq pork, scallions, chives, and fried shallots. It's got oodles (pun intended) of flavors, savory, with a bit of sweetness into it. The broth was great so the pho was really solid, I'd definitely recommend it and the small (which is quite large) is only $6.50. I don't, however, recommend the egg rolls. They were some of my least favorite egg rolls in Austin. Next time I think I'll just get a large bowl and no egg roll. We got here around 1130 when there were 3 other tables seated. We left around 1215 (service was very prompt, a big plus) and it was starting to get packed. Get the Pho, skip the egg rolls, and try to arrive a little early to make sure you get seated and served really quickly. read more

This may just be the best pho I've ever had. I got the pho with thin-sliced beef, which apparently is dropped into the broth to cook it. The flavor of the broth was excellent, and the textures of the rare beef and the noodles interact to create something truly awesome. In addition, it was an excellent value -- a large bowl is absolutely enormous. read more

I saw this place was really highly rated, so I decided to stop here and check it out with my family. The 55c was highly recommended, and it sounds like the same dish that's my absolute favorite so that was a natural. I also ordered a #1 small to share. The Pho was good, although I don't know if there's a huge difference from one place of Pho to another. Maybe I've only been to places that have good Pho, or maybe I'm not enough of a connoisseur. Either way - it's good. On dish 55c (I forgot their name for it), the noodles and vegetables were good, but I have to say: It was a definitive step below my favorite place (Hai Ky) for their interpretation of Hu Tieu Ap Chao. For one thing, the noodles here are deep fried, which makes them tougher, and greasier. I love having the outside lightly friend with a little crunch but a soft chewy center. There weren't as many vegetables in the dish at My Tan, and the sauce wasn't as flavorful. Now don't get me wrong: It's a good dish, but I'm comparing it to probably my favorite Asian dish of all time. One other thing that made me knock off a star was that the prices were a couple of dollars more expensive for the non-Pho dishes than at Hai Ky. read more

By far the best Pho in the city. Their spring rolls are hit or miss but the coffee is good and their #58 rocks for a change. Better than Pho Saigon (except their grilled pork spring rolls);). Way better than PhoNatic, Pho Van, Pho Dan, Pho Duy or Pho Thaison. A little better than Tahn Nhi. read more
