I was tired of Sunflower, so looked around for nearby restaurants that weren't in the Domain and found this place. I wasn't expecting much, and as far as the decor goes I got what I was expecting, but the food was much better than I expected. They had salt and pepper wings listed in their chalkboard outside so I ordered that - these are the best wings I've had in a while, with a crispy tasty outside but moist insides. It even came with actual peppers which were also surprisingly tasty, and I'm not into peppers (or veggies in general). A bonus for me was that they were all flappers - of course if you like the drums you would have been disappointed. I also got the Hu Tieu Ap Chao which says it is pan-fried rice noodles but turned out to be rice cakes - again surprisingly delicious, nice and crispy outside, soft and yummy inside. The beef and veggies it came with were also surprisingly good. Hope ordered a pho with beef and tofu which was also good, especially the broth. Service was decent, but it was not crowded so not sure how it would be during a busy time, if any. Looking forward to returning to try some of their other dishes. read more

Combo Hu Tieu Ap Chao ($19.95): Wow, definitely a must-try! The combo includes 3 proteins and they let us choose our own (beef, pork, and shrimp). The fried rice noodles came out so crispy and delicious. However they used thin noodles instead of thick, flat ones. Banh Bot Chien ($11.95): The fried rice cakes weren't as crispy as we would have liked, but everything else about the dish was still really good. Budget friendly TEMU quality Vietnamese restaurant. If you don't know what's missing, you'll probably enjoy it. But for true Vietnamese food lovers, prepare to be disappointed. I'm used to Vietnamese food where herbs are abundant, ingredients are intentional and deliberate and nothing feels substituted, shortchanged or inauthentic. Here, too many things felt like a compromise. The shortcuts here are too hard to ignore. Let's start with the pho...and this time I chose tofu and veggie pho just to see their interpretation. My bowl came to the table and immediately I see big ass uncooked chunks of hard Celery and random pieces of bamboo, which immediately raised an eyebrow. Bamboo in pho? Veggie Pho traditionally relies on slow, tenderly cooked vegetables (for this dish) and aromatics...not whatever this salad like chunk of celery wanted to be. Did they just throw in whatever was on hand??? The celery was undercooked and bulky, adding crunch where there should have been tenderness and warmth. The herb situation didn't help. Thai basil was present, but that was mostly it. No sawtooth. No fish leaf. No sesame leaf. No proper herb plate. No layered freshness to build the broth's flavor. I mean, a little cilantro was tossed in, but pho is meant to be finished with a good plate of herbs. If you know, you know. The spring rolls? HUHHH, another miss. The rice paper was still stiff and crunchy y'all, rolled like an enchilada than a proper gỏi cuốn. I mean, the ends were wide open and the rice paper was not hydrated AT ALL. A spring roll should be soft, pliable, and sealed. This was tragic. The pork used in the spring rolls was especially disappointing: thin, pale, boiled-looking and flavorless. This is the kind of cut restaurants use when they don't feel like grilling or seasoning. Spring rolls live and die by flavor/ingredient quality cause they are already simple enough. They need flavor. One important note: the "vegan" pho uses beef broth. I personally don't mind tofu and vegetables in a beef base. I prefer it. But true vegans and vegetarians are not going to like this. That should be disclosed BOLDLY and clearly. Service wise, the staff was attentive but a bit impatient and sarcastic. Not unkind...just not particularly warm. Bottom line: this place offers decent prices and a limited number of familiar dishes, but authenticity and technique take a backseat. read more

WOW! Saigon Quan is a hidden gem! I came across it after searching for Vietnamese restaurants near me to try something new and now I think this will be my go-to spot! Here are the top 5 things I loved most: - Staff working was SO welcoming, kind, hospitable, and provided great service - The prices are incredibly reasonable and the menu offers a great variety - Portion sizes are massive and everything was delicious - Restaurant is incredibly clean and there's plenty of parking out front We arrived around 7:30 pm on a Saturday night and about half the tables were filled so there was no wait. The workers greeted us right as as walked in, got us seated at a table, and brought menus and waters right away. The shrimp pho was incredible! The broth was so flavorful... I accidentally started sipping just the broth so I ended up with a bowl of all the noodles and shrimp but one of the workers noticed and offered to bring me more broth. Amazing! The pho is brought to the table with fresh herbs, beansprouts, limes, and jalapeño on the side and the overall serving size is HUGE. I rarely have leftovers because I have a big appetite but even I couldn't finish it all and took half home. The total was $56.07 after tax ($4.27) and before tip for an order of shrimp spring rolls ($5.95), pho tom/shrimp pho ($14.95), make your own pho ($13.95), and com chien ca ma ($16.95). This was enough to fill 2 people with very big appetites for dinner AND lunch the next day so the pricing is incredibly reasonable for the food quality and portion size. Watch out, there's a new sheriff in town and they serve amazing authentic Vietnamese dishes! Their Bun Bi Hue stood out best, served with an original mam (fermented shrimp paste) on the side. This strong umami bomb (not for the weak) deepens the clear broth to this hot noodle dish. Their banh bot chien/ rice cake omelette that we had as starters is worth mentioning too. Savory, light, and well balanced! Hu tieu ap chao /pan fried noodles with beef was on point. The crispness is done right. Mi xao don/ crispy fried egg noddles with pork and vegetables was crispy, fragrant and well-loved! Bo Luc Lac/ shaken beef was quite small portioned and inhaled. Bun thit nuong cha gio/ noodle dish with lemongrass pork and egg roll, had too much onions. The restaurant boast a typical Asian eatery in a convenient clean open space on the corner lot of Metric and Cedar Bend Drive. Although they opened their doors 8 months ago, this family business continues working hard to deliver the best and to put their name out there. Came here on a Monday night and basically had the restaurant to ourselves. It's at the end of a strip mall away from the main highway, so I can see why it's a bit more quiet, but it's a great neighborhood joint. One thing that I haven't seen a lot of is the fried rice cake with egg (bot chien trung), which is a shame, because it's a great appetizer and probably the best thing we had. Fried egg, super crisp chewy rice cakes with soy sauce and fried shallots and pickled carrots make for a textural wonderland of savory, funky, slightly greasy, umami goodness. For mains, we got the pork vermicelli bowl with the egg roll and bo luc lac, both of which we felt was just ok. They're both aggressively seasoned and while the beef was tender and the dipping sauce was good, I've definitely had better in town. The bun was too gingery in the pork but still decent with the fish sauce. All in all decent service and if you want a quiet dinner, good place to come. But will say compared to other similarly styled restaurants in town, this wouldn't be my first choice unless I was already in the area. read more

I also had the fried shrimp appetizer which was also really addictive, crunchy and a nice flavor profile. Steamed pork dumpling was pretty average, I thought. Venue is clean, though the parking lot is really busy in this complex, there's a gym and a bunch of businesses sharing parking. I had a bit of a tough time finding parking. Saigon Quan is the third venture from the same owners of Saigon 512 and Bep Saigon. The menu was smaller but had the highlights of each of the other two iterations. We ordered Banh Bot Chien, Bun Bo Hue, and Pho. They got the protein in the pho wrong, but that was okay so we just went with it. Bot Chien was good, Bun Bo Hue had extra shrimp paste on the side which made it better, and pho was decent. They have Canh Chua served hotpot style that looked good, though we didn't order. Came for dinner and the place was pretty empty when I arrived around 6 p.m. But people did start coming shortly after. We ordered what I would call the transition Vietnamese dinner meal. The Fish Clay Pot and Vietnamese Sour Soup (not pictured) and added the Fried Rice Cake too. The service was great, we spoke Vietnamese to the employees and they treated us like their kids making sure we cooked the veggies and fish in the right order for the Soup. The Fish Clay Pot is very similar to what I remember eating as a kid, as for the Soup, I think it was a bit more on the sour side than what I liked and not enough bean sprouts for my liking. The fried rice cake is good, probably one of the closest I have eaten in Austin that is similar to the ones in Houston. The restaurant itself is a decent side with bright light. Very nice and helpful people. We ordered takeout and it was our first time trying this restaurant. We ordered: - pork steamed dumplings - fine/average. You can get them steamed or pan fried. $8.95 - Bo Luc Lac (shaken beef) I didn't enjoy their version of this dish. The meat wasn't very tender and the lime/salt/pepper dipping sauce was weird. I am pretty sure it was bottled juice. I do not recommend this dish. $17.95 - salt and pepper calamari - came with the same dipping sauce as above so we didn't eat the sauce. The calamari was in large pieces and had a thick and crunchy batter. A bit too heavy and clunky for me but we liked it. I would not order it again. $12.95 - Banh Bot Chien - egg and rice cake dish with a nice sauce that you wrap in fresh lettuce. This was my family's favorite dish. $11.95 - Combo Ap Chao - same rice cake pieces as above with chicken, beef, and shrimp. Had a solid wok hay flavor and was enjoyed. Lots of simple flavor. $19.95 -vermicelli bowl with beef. Very nice lemongrass flavor to the beef. $13.95 - Thai basil chicken. My favorite dish of the night. It had a good balanced flavor and the chicken was tender. We will return to try new things again. I'd overall give the food 3.75 and the service 5 so I'm happy to score overall a 4. Brand new, still in soft opening mode, Saigon Quan takes the place where China House used to be. Right out of the gate, they're absolutely crushing it. Basil eggplant was fantastic, with a nice punch of spice from charred jalapenos, perfectly tender, buttery, garlicky eggplant, and firm fried tofu. Fantastic as that was, the ap chao was an absolute TREASURE. Perfectly crispy seared noodle cakes with a satisfying wok hei around the edges that positively sing when you add some of the chili oil stationed on each table. Obviously, I need to go back for the pho which takes up a considerable portion of the menu. There are great lunch deals on classic Chinese-American dishes too, all of which come with you choice of protein, so most if not all can be made vegan/vegetarian with tofu. They haven't yet activated online ordering, so it's all in person right now. Go early while it's still unknown and quiet! Okay, got talked into this by a family member after returning from vacation. Didn't really want to go, immediately ate my words upon eating. Family member and I ordered lunch specials, Cashew with Chicken, I ordered a Jalapeno with Pork. We both got hot and sour soups and fried rice. The service was **lightning** quick. We got our food less than ten minutes after ordering, brought to us on giant plates. My pork was on a bed of delicious peppers, mushrooms, onions, carrots and broccoli. The pork was good, I wish it had been a little crispier but that is a nitpick at worst. The veggies and fried rice were killer with the hot chilli oil and soy sauce made it the right level of spice. We were given a giant portion size, and this is a compliment, not a negative, service was flawless, attending to our every want or need in a flash. And for lunch special it was on the cheaper side, less than 20$ for soup + lunch special. Ambiance wise, there was a nice smell to the place, and music in the background, perfectly fine nothing special but it doesn't need to be, go for the food and the service. I've left this spot with so many nice reviews but tonight my experience wasn't so great. I ordered a double order of the shrimp and pork spring rolls in hopes they would be amazing but the pork was just covered in fat and I spent most of my meal spitting it out because it was so chewy. Now I can't even touch the other two because I'm scared of gagging due to so much pork fat. I usually get the C3 and have never had a bad experience until now. The staff is super friendly and the food is usually really good for Austin Thai. I'd still recommend this place but probably just stick with shrimp spring rolls and pass on the pork. read more

I have never written a review while actively consuming food from a place but I guess there's a first time for everything. This place is great. I mean like *great*. I'm tired. I've worked a long day. So now I'm sitting in my bed eating Chinese takeout as nature intended. We placed our order online and were told 15-20 mins pickup. When we got there just shy of 15 later, the order was bagged up and ready. Like all great Asian restaurants in Austin, it's a strip mall location so ambiance expectations should be adjusted accordingly. We got home and crab rangoons were still crispy. The lo mein was chewy and not sticky with juicy chunks of chicken, but that wasn't mine. What WAS mine was the sesame chicken. Big chunks of pineapple, shaved ginger throughout, steamed broccoli, and perfectly fried chicken, with light, fluffy rice. Sesame chicken is my bellwether for a new Chinese restaurant and this place killed it. This place is gonna go into my rotation of regulars. read more

The only negative - the egg roll definitely needs work and I wish they offered Vietnamese Spring Rolls. Parking was adequate in this small neighborhood center at the corner of South Bend and Metric. I'm a fan of the former Little China that was in this space and doubted anyone could improve on that. But I was very pleasantly surprised on a recent visit. The new owner has completely redone the inside space with warm colors. The place is spotless and the service is top notch. The owner took our order and his sister was our server. We recognized her from another restaurant on Parmer so we got special attention. I got the rare steak and meatballs pho. It came out piping hot had plenty of protein. I like my broth a little saltier and I asked for some original fish sauce. They quickly obliged and that did the trick for me. We'll be back soon and enjoy some of the other treats on the varied menu. They weren't very busy so I encourage you Asian food lovers to get in there and help them grow their business. read more

I would definitely recommend this Chinese spot. It's in a small shopping center and it has plenty of parking. The food is prepared with care and is delicious. We had the pho and sweet and sour chicken and both were fresh and tasty. They have iced tea and canned sodas, just FYI for those interested. The staff is genuine and so friendly. They made sure we were seated, served and checked in right away. The prices are reasonable and you can get lunch quickly without sacrificing flavor and food quality.
